Check out the press release here!
Obsidian Entertainment, the developer of Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: the Stick of Truth and the Kickstarter phenomenon Pillars of Eternity, announced that they have entered into a long-term licensing partnership with Paizo Inc. to produce electronic games based on its popular Pathfinder Roleplaying Game intellectual property.
Obsidian's first licensed product will be a tablet game based on the highly successful Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, a cooperative game for 1 to 4 players. Players each have a unique character composed of a deck of cards and a set of stats. Characters have classes such as fighter, rogue, wizard and cleric, as well as numbers that define attributes such as strength, wisdom and charisma etc. Players will be able to customize their deck to better suit each individual's vision of their character.
"At Obsidian we have a long history of working with the greatest RPG franchises, and we're thrilled to get to play in the Pathfinder universe now," said CEO Feargus Urquhart. "We're huge fans and can't wait to bring what we do in the electronic gaming world to Pathfinder fans everywhere".
In the world of Pathfinder, players take on the role of brave adventurers fighting to survive in a world beset by magic and evil. The Pathfinder RPG is currently translated into multiple languages, with hundreds of thousands of players worldwide. The Pathfinder brand has also been licensed for comic book series, graphic novels, miniatures, plush toys, apparel, and is being developed into a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game.
"Obsidian is a video game developer at the top of its game", said Paizo CEO Lisa Stevens. "Being able to bring that type of experience and passion to Pathfinder can only mean great things, both for our loyal Pathfinder community and for all fans of great CRPG's."
Obsidian will be at Gen Con 2014 showing off an early prototype of the digital Pathfinder Adventure Card Game in the Paizo booth (#203) and in their own booth (#2151) featuring the first consumer hands on for Pillars of Eternity.

Following on from the previous thread:
Obsidian have said that once they release PILLARS OF ETERNITY (by November at the latest, I think) they will be looking at another Kickstarter, potentially a licensed one, for early 2015. PATHFINDER would seem an ideal fit for that.
How is Obsidian's track record with Add-on content? I'm kind of tired of pay-once-then-keep-paying revenue models.
Obsidian's record with after-game support is pretty strong. Their expansions for NWN2 were arguably stronger than the base game and their NEW VEGAS DLC was amazing.

I'd like to point out that Lisa just said on the other thread (right before it was locked up my Ms. no-fun-Lambertz there :-P ) that there WILL be a CRPG-style game coming out of this partnership! WOOHOOOO!!!!!
Here's the quote:
Imbicatus wrote:I'm just hoping there will be more than just the card game app. There will be a CRPG. Just no details to announce right now. Our deal with Obsidian is a long term partnership. I expect there will be many games over the coming years. The card game app was easier for them to get up running fast. There will even be a demo at our booth at GenCon. But there are other plans that will be revealed in time.
Super excited that this is finally public! Looking forward to working with Obsidian on a bunch of awesome Pathfinder games!
Lisa
To which I reply HECK YES

I know we'd nearly all rather have the CRPG *now*, but you can still take my money on this one...
Oddly enough, the card game is what first led me to know that the Pathfinder setting even existed. I was an old D&D player on hiatus who was looking for some RPG nostalgia and picked it up. Long story short, now I'll buy whatever you throw in front of me as long as it's a good product. Perhaps a product like this might even draw a few more "converts" :P
Now the only inevitable question left is: how *soon* will you be taking my money for this one? I want!

I can understand the reasoning behind leading with the card game app, but it feels a bit like announcing Led Zeppelin are reuniting ... to record a car commercial. No doubt a kick-ass car commercial, but not really what long-time fans were hoping for.
I'd agree if Lisa hadn't already stated there was a CRPG on the way and that this would be a long-term partnership.
So it's more like Led Zeppelin are reuniting to do a new album and go on tour... but since they're all together and it's quicker, they're gonna do this car commercial first, then head to the studio.

Couldn't agree more!
This is big, BIG news for me =)
Even if I'm not thrilled about some tablet e-card game, the idea of eventually seeing a CRPG style game done by Oblivion is wonderful!

So, is an ACG like Warhammer : Quest?
Character on a card and tiles for the dungeon, etc.?
The Pathfinder CG is like... You pick an iconic who has their own character sheet of sorts with different improvements you can earn from completing objectives like beating dungeons, or whole adventure paths.
For this iconic you build a deck from a pool of cards. All of these cards are provided for you. You pick what tools, spells, armor, or weapons you want to use. Then you use this deck to try and overcome the challenges presented by the adventure decks. Each area you explore is comprised of cards randomly drawn from the items, monsters, magic, traps, etc decks. So by exploring you can fight monsters, find new gear, gain allies etc. You can possibly earn the cards, if they are beneficial like a magic item, for you to keep.
So as you progress through the game, your deck for your 'hero' is constantly evolving and getting stronger, as is the character itself from the rewards you are earning.

Let's see, family of four ... four iPads ... 1-4 players ... perfect! This will get my family playing the card game. I had not introduced it yet as we were playing ROTRL AP. But, the advantage to the tablet over the real-world is the ability to walk away. We'll play a game of Carcassone on the tablet over a couple days.
And CRPG in the future ... yay!

Damn.
I think you just sold me on a stinkin' cardgame. Never thought I'd see the day, but that sounds pretty cool.

Long-term licensing agreement with Obsidian: Great news for you guys. Yay!
Card game tablet app: very unenthusiastic meh.
Assurances of a future CRPG: Yay! What i was hoping for!
Possibility it'll be a Kickstarter funded thing: Ugh, really? Enough kickstarter. Do it or don't. "Give me money now and I'll give you something maybe, sorta acceptable in a couple years." Pushing the funding risk off on to the consumer trend needs to stop.

It's a very fun card game. Just a lot of shuffling, which the app will eliminate, making it even better!

It's going to be a couple of years, likely, regardless. It becomes a choice between "Kickstart it or never do it" more often than not, at least for smaller companies. And Paizo is not exactly a large-scale company.

Yup, people just don't seem to understand that without Kickstarter these games would not exist.
No Pillars of Eternity, no Torment: Tides of Numenera, no Wasteland 2, etc.

I don't think people realize how expensive modern video games are to develop. Especially a studio like Obsidian, who's not a super-tiny indie developer and has many employees.
It sounds like Obsidian and Paizo are partnering to self-produce. Typically, the game's publisher ponies up funds needed for game development. I don't think Paizo can afford a $1,000,000+ video game project, so Kickstarter makes that possible.

I've backed 77 projects. Of those, only one was canceled after a funding fiasco, and then it was picked up and saved by another team. My experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and Kickstarter is allowing wonderful things that otherwise would never be created get made.
If there was an obsidian kickstarter for a Pathfinder CRPG I would fund the hell out of it.

There are a few cases where it works and Pathfinder + Obsidian should be one of those cases but I'm a bit jaded to the whole kickstarter thing. I've seen too many products with seemingly infinate delays regardless of how often they met their funding goals or games released with massive bugs and failed promises.

If you believe it's too much of a risk* then you're most certainly encouraged - by Kickstarter themselves, no less - to not contribute, and wait until the game/other product is done, published, and released before putting money into it.
*: I originally said "if you believe it's a risk". But any project of this kind, Kickstarted or not, is a risk - at the very least, a risk that it won't get completed at all, or a risk it won't sell well when it is. The question is whether or not the risk is too high to be worth adding your own funds to the pot.

Which is exactly what I do now that I don't have the spare cash to gamble. But I have had enough bad experiences with it in the past that just seeing the phrase triggers a negative reaction.

Sorry to hear that.
I personally would still rather have the risk of failure than nothing at all, because without Kickstarter there's not even the funds to make an attempt.
Right, I get that it sometimes comes down "kickstarter, or nothing." I just get the feeling that a growing number of projects are turning to Kickstarter first as a way to mitigate some of their own financial risk, to avoid more traditional funding avenues, or use it as a long-lead pre-order system.
Plus, with video games, i like to get a good look at it before I drop money on it.

Well, avoiding "more traditional funding avenues" is kind of the point of Kickstarter. It's going straight to the fans and saying "do you/do you not want this" and asking them to vote with their wallets, rather than having to convince some corporation or board to support a project. That's kind of the intent from the get-go.

So there may not be CRPG info this very second, but it sounds hopefull to get some in the near future. Can we stop dumping on Obsidian, e-card games, and kickstarter and maybe start talking about what we would like in a CRPG?
Do y'all think using an AP would be a good way to go?
If not what would your favored approach be?

An AP would make a good single-player/out of the box campaign, sure. Runelords would probably be the best option IMO. Or maybe Crimson Throne. Both are highly recognizable, known for having awesome stories, and come with plenty of interesting NPCs the player/player party would/could interact with, classic villains, and memorable storyline events and locations.
