First solid item that I really like. Awesome visuals, enjoyed the writing style, solid ability. A keep in my book!
The item I like best so far was in the third pairing I got... perhaps it set unreasonable expectations for this years crop in my mind, because in the pairing since I have seen few that even come close to it.

Ok, you two must share via PM!

I have an hour to kill at home with no one here before I need to get ready for work.

Yet another of those "My favorite class really needs this to bring the pwnage to the game!" items... *sigh* I mean, if you change it a little bit here, a little bit there, and make it more inclusive to members of NOT YOUR §$=!? CLASS, I would have voted it. This however, I will not.

If your item's name has the word UTILITY in it then it is probably a SAK!

It can be pretty merciless. Thanks for pointing that out - I'll try to be more gentle if I comment in the future.

Lots of items cop criticism because of what this competition in particular is looking for.

But in an actual home brew campaign, who really cares? There are items I consistently vote down here which could still be loads of fun around a table.

Outside of this competition, if your gaming group enjoys it and it makes your game fun, that's all that matters. No one at your game table will care whether you got the price right, remembered to italicise spell names, or just happened to design a torc the same year six other people did.

It's good to see so many people getting into the spirit of a fantasy RPG and then sharing their creativity publicly in this competition.

Most voters overlook some typos and minor errors when confronted with mojo. You already did better than others who failed to submit at all. Cut yourself a break. The community and judges can be plenty tough enough.

It has been mentioned several times now, but I guess it needs repeating...

This thread is for random thoughts and for simple but necessary venting. What we post here is not intended to be malicious, we don't want to bully anyone, and we don't think ourselves above you.

We dedicate hours of free time to browse through hundreds of items, and each and every one of us brings his very own set of ideas, knowledge, and expecations to that task. An entry that causes one voter to copy it into his personal folder to be inserted into his home game might cause another voter to write a sarcastic comment about overpowered crap in this very thread.

I think nothing that has been said in here has crossed any lines, and even if you think your item is the one being mentioned - are you sure? Lots of peope already saw entries very similar to their own.

Also, you were brave enough to write and submit something for this contest, so you can handle some teasing fun, yes? After all, I am sure that every single one of us in here will give you elaborate answers as to why we like or dislike a particular item, if asked personally (or after the end of Round 1).

Yep, a lot of this thread is based on the reactions of people very familiar with the contest, and with several years of experience in avoiding some of the mistakes they point out. I can imagine that this thread reads as very harsh to a lot of people. That is unfortunate, because the community is actually highly supportive, especially if you show that you are willing to learn from your mistakes and use the wealth of info in the forums to improve your design skills.

I'm certainly guilty of making posts mocking items that I'm certain the author would recognize, and feel bad about. And the last thing I want is to discourage someone from trying again next year, or working on design for their own campaign.

That's why I'm glad there was another thread started with praise instead of rambling. Because that is what this is - rambling, venting, gut reactions. This is not constructive criticism or feedback. But it is honest, and a fair depiction of how your item resonates with voters. And there is a place for that. If you seriously want to design things for publication, you will have to learn to deal with that and learn from it.

And once the Top 32 are announced, and the feedback threads open up, you will see the same people filling this thread provide page upon page of insightful and helpful feedback, that will help you grow as a designer.

All right....good thing this is the rambling thread, huh

Some of it is also frustration with seeing repeat items. You'll note there are not a few remarks like that. Very few of us understand all the ins and outs of the pairing algorithm.

I do apologize if some of what you read here seems harsh. I consider this a catharsis of sorts - getting it out of your system, so to speak. A lot of us are pretty dedicated voters, title or no.

I've voted for the same item four times. And I'm not even at 100 votes yet.
The interesting thing is the item is decent but not amazing and I've voted for it each time because it's always paired against the most amazing crap. Unformatted rule breaking entries.

I'm also a little surprised I haven't seen more Mythic items. I rather expected that to be the meme du jour.

I'd say it's about what I'd have expected. I think mythic is still too new for most people to be using regularly, much less feel experienced enough with to try and tinker with mechanics. I think the majority of the submitters are still just playing regular ol' CRB with some extras.

On the other hand, I'd be very surprised if this time next year we don't see a whole lot of submissions aimed squarely at the new Advanced Class Guide classes.

Doing a keyword search of this thread showed me a couple of things.

1. People have more than likely seen my item.
2. There are a few items that have a similar theme.
3. Most of those items are not well liked, but a couple are.

Hopefully mine is one of the well liked!
