I can see the Rappan Athuk files in d20, but there is no option for me to download. I assume it has to do with my login. I filled out the survey with my d20 login when it came through.

I e-mailed d20 about the the issue. Should I also e-mail you guys? Thanks!

I glad I not the only one that is having the same problem although it would obviously be better if it just worked. It is in the Marketplace but not linked into download for my login. I emailed Blonde Frog at kickstarter@talesofthefroggod.com.

Same here. I have the same situation as Elorebaen (can see them in the marketplace but can't download them) and I did what Zarathos did (sent an email with my d20Pro user id to kickstarter@talesofthefroggod.com). I had also filled out the survey sent previously.

I emailed the guys at D20Pro to see what went wrong. They have the list of everyone's user names so hopefully we will have an answer soon.

I need to decide what I am going to do with this"Killer GM #993". I already own #20 opened, should I sell it sealed? Or open it to see if there is a golden ticket in it then sell the box?

How many golden tickets are left that have not been turned in?

AFAIK only 1 Golden Ticket has been claimed. The market for RAR is low atm. The last one i saw on ebay that sold went for only $90.

I wanted to sell my extra for at least double retail, and luckily i did a while ago, to create some shelf space. But still I did calculate the chances that the box could have a Golden Ticket :-) ...1000 total, 4 remaining tickets. But how many of the 997 other RARs have already been opened... Probaly 1 in 100 chance. Very fitting. It's like the old 1E deity notice roll....

If you don't want to gamble, I would hold off of selling for a while. Drop by at this acaeum thread if you want to talk about d20 collectible values with the collecting experts.

Woo hoo, 2 of 3 are in NZ :)

So I downloaded this, and I have no idea how to read it. Is there any rappan athuk for dummies? From what I can tell the CRs and levels are random. Where does one start? As a dm, where do I hint the players to go? And what levels should players start in this?

My plan is to base them at zelkors ferry and hope they twig that the mouth of doom would be a good place to start. I imagine a little bit of dungeon delving, bandit chasing and wilderness exploration will follow, eventually a trip to the cloister. After that itll be up to them to go where they think is best. Maybe seek out the mausoleum, maybe continue through one of the various entrances they will likely have discovered by then.

I think its important the players create characters interested in exploring a massive, dangerous dungeon, ridding the world of evil and liberating the baddies' loot. I'll suggest they avoid outdoorsy or urban-focussed characters. If someone wants to play a PC out to travel to every far flung corner of the world, i dont think this is the campaign for it.

The 'Rappan Athuk for Dummies' idea has merit. Even for those of us with prior experience with RA (the original and then Reloaded), this version has A LOT to digest and read through. It would be interesting and helpful I think to have a forum thread that was devoted to being 'The DMs reference to Rappan Athuk'. It could have some tips and suggestions, maybe a table that broke down each dungeon level and wilderness encounter by CR. Then DMs could speak to each level and give their thoughts as to whether the suggested CR was just right, too high or too low, as well as any miscellaneous tips for DMs to watch out for with that level.

I could see that being a value-add for all of us Rappan Athuk devotees. Of course, I haven't been out to the Yuku old Necromancer/new FGG boards in a little while; something like this may already exist out there.

This may not help much:

No, no RA for Dummies yet. If someone want to take this on (as the Doctor suggested) as a fanwork, or on the messageboards, I think that would be awesome

One starts wherever one wants. This is a non-linear adventure; we dont hold you to one pathway. This is more of a sandbox, go here, then go there, anyplace you want to go. its also not a case of progressing CRs; some levels of RA are MUCH more deadly closer to the surface (dont go down the well!), and level 14C isnt much of a CR combat challenge to 18-20th level PCs (on average; some parts of that would kill 20+ level PCs if they are stupid). its up to you, the books presents ideas, it doesnt hold your hand.

As a DM, you can let the players guide you. As was said before, Zelkor's Ferry is probably going to see a LOT of use; starting off hunting bandits can be good or very, very bad; its fairly easy to tie it in to existing campaigns as well.

Players can start from level 1 if they're seasoned and know how to run away, or 3-4 if they a a full-steam-ahead group. Personal preference, really.

Agreed! These files are such a HUGE prep-time saver. For reference, I have been using Maptool and playing online (weekly) for about the last 5 years. As a side note, this has made me seriously consider using d20pro as my main VTT.

For those not familiar with VTT's, the prep-time is usually roughly double that of a face to face game. Basically you are extracting maps, obtaining images, setting up tokens and placing them in the campaign file. These files have done all of that for us. Amazing! I believe this is the direction that publishers need to start moving in. I guarantee that if more publishers offered this as a supplement to their products more and more people would use VTTs.

I haven't had time to really dig in enough to offer constructive criticism, but if you only do what is available for Wilderness and Cloister I would be happy.

Big time kudos!

Heh heh Elorebaen I like your style sir. It's always nice to see someone that gets as much value from a company's digital goods as I do. I know I keep begging pretty much every company I buy from now to make Hero Lab files a part of their business plan. Those are critical to me, but the d20Pro maps that FGG produced for RA are totally amazing bonus goodness on top of the HL files. I am absolutely stoked to see how the d20Pro map files for the deeper levels of the dungeon turn out. If these first sets are any indication, I'm gonna be one gigglin silly happy GM...

Now if can just get those pesky Slumbering Tsar files...<ducks Skeet's throwing spear, hopes it doesn't have 'returning' on it>

I kid! I kid! I know that's already been discussed here. I'm still hopeful for a collaborative ST Hero Lab project to spring up somewhere between this board, the Hero Lab forums, and d20pfsrd.com.

I remember feeling the same exact sensation when I first downloaded the PDF. To make matters worse my players found out I had it and wanted to start right away before I had any time to read through it. It was very overwhelming. I let them start at 6th level and go wherever they wanted. If I could do it again I would let them start at 3rd level and stick to Zelkors Ferry and environs for a while.

The Players Guide supplement can help put things into perspective. Also don't forget every level has a box in the beginning that lists about what level PC's should be to take on that level. Of course that doesn't mean they're guaranteed victory at that level, there are plenty of nasty surprises. And the connections between levels can take them to a level that is way harder then the one they just left, especially if they discover less then obvious connections.

Yeah as much as I love my iPad and PDFs, for something of this scale, with the swapping around and about to get a grip on it, I am glad I have hardcopies.

I can't wait to have the two in conjunction. I mean the bookmarks in the PDF are pretty sweet. I can navigate pretty fast now.

Is there any discussion about placing Rappan Athuk in Golarion?

I'm currently thinking on the shores of Ember Lake in Varisia, with the coast road running from Galduria to Nybor. I'd be interested to hear where others may be thinking of locating it.

I'd be interested in seeing Rappan Athuk as a destination in the upcoming Pathfinder Online.

That...
...would...
.......be.....
.........AWESOME.....

It would have to be built by the players, I think.

Yeah, I didnt mean anything official. I just wondered where people might be planning on placing it in their home-spun Golarions. All the coasts I really want to use face the wrong way.

(I mean I can make the compass point south, but there might be an ideal spot I havent thought of..)

I do not know where it would fit best but when I was running a Necroworld themed game I stuck Rappan Athuk in the Southern part of the Sanos forest. I stuck Tsar just above the Malgorian Mountains in Varisia. I stuck Tomb of Abysthor in the Fogscar Mountains. I substituted Reme for Magnimar and Fairhill for Sandpoint. I just added Bards Gate along the Yondabakari River.

Cheers. That's pretty close to where I'm looking. I'd appreciate any other perspectives if anyone else has placed any Necromancer/FGG stuff in Golarion. (I've also placed the Splinters of Faith series across Andoran/Taldor in various places).

Looking at those archives I would love to see play reports and DM advice like that here on Paizo for the PF version of RA.

I remember there was a campaign journal for Slumbering Tsar on some blog that helped me come to grips with that huge campaign before I tried to run it.

These things being non-linear compared to Paizo AP's, it really helps to see examples of what order other parties have done things in, what hooks DM's have used, how different encounters have been run, etc.

RA subscription is being worked on--I drafted the first half of installment 1 this past weekend. Maps for 8 areas (1.33 years worth) have been drafted and sent to cartography, and I have outlined all 8 of those areas (levels really).

Packing slowed me down a bit--thanks for the patience--but I don't want you guys to get drivel; this stuff needed thinking through to make sure it flowed with the main book.

Starting this tonight!

Got 3 PCs, starting at level 3, using gestalt:

Halfling Ninja/Bard(Archeologist)
Aasimar Fighter(Freehand)/Magus
Gnome Sorcerer(Daemon)/Oracle(Nature)

We'll start on the bottom edge of the map and start making our way north along the Coast Road. I'm going to allow them to see site #23 (a bandit fort) in the distance as they go along. If they pursue it, that'll most assuredly lead to a TPK. If not, then I'll just have to see where they go!

Contributor

My party is already 7th lvl, I'm using Rappan as a Test of the Starstone. They have to make it across the expanse...if they do they actually enter into Rappan.

Got mine today, all contents perfect. Took 16 days to fly out to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This time, they didn't kick the box around like they did the Slumbering Tsar.

I have the original RA1, and I'm thinking of picking up the big PF book. I intend to use it in conjunction with Slumbering Tsar, so at this point I'm mostly interested in the low-level (1-6) content of the new RA.

* What new dungeon content is there for levels 1-6? I understand the Mouth and Gullet are new, as well as the Cloister. Are they solid dungeons? Are they distinct in layout and feel from the main dungeon? Worth running themselves, even if not as a precursor to the whole enchilada?

* How is the expanded wilderness content for low-level PCs? I have the old free PDF of the wilderness area, and it has a lot of interesting and dynamic encounters sketched out, but few maps or details. How much is this fleshed out in the new book?

* How is Zelkor's Ferry as a home base? Is it a beleaguered village that good-aligned PCs will want to protect, or more of a hive of lawless villainy? Are there resources enough to use it as a home base, or will the PCs still have to based out of a bigger city?

Ultimately, I'm trying to decide if the level 1-6 content of RA will be a better springboard for Slumbering Tsar than the Tomb of Abysthor - a dungeon I really like, but I'm not sure if there's enough variety there to keep my players happy for six levels of play.

Thanks.

Haffrung,

The Mouth/Gullet is neat. It's rather large and sprawling, but there's a lot of empty rooms. It gives a good "exploring" feeling. It has its own odd self-interconnectedness, and it makes for a good time trying to find your way around. There are some unique encounters and sinister traps, all that make sense for low-level. It'll be memorable, with the snickering door, or the slot machine of fate as two fun examples.

The Cloister has a lot of content. I haven't actually done the pagecount, but I think it has more than the Mouth/Gullet. I haven't read through it as closely, but the maps jumped out at me: they are very poorly laid out. It doesn't find the standards used elsewhere in the book at all. One dungeon floor will be spread across several images on several pages, with notes on how to link them. Another weird design is that the bottommost room is labeled as "CR 18+" and has 666 CR 1 killer frogs. Not a swarm, but unique enemies. I'm not sure what to make of that...

The wilderness content is by-and-large not low-level friendly. You'll want to keep them confined to the Zelkor's Ferry / Mouth of Doom region and not let them wander. You need to be about 6th level to interact with it meaningfully. Most of the outdoor stuff is in the CR 10ish range.

Zelkor's Ferry feels a bit like any of the towns from Diablo II. It's small, its quiant, the locals are weird. Nothing here to pull at the heartstrings. The innkeeper is a wereboar. There's a local necromancer that has a % chance of successfully raising you from the dead, etc. It allows for quirky fun, but it's not a place for heroes to save.

And the PCs will quickly grow beyond it. It's only a valid homebase for very low level characters.

Hopefully that was helpful!

Ok, so I just purchased the Mega Collectors Pack from Noble Knight and it will be here in two weeks. My party is excited to start, and I'm equally excited to watch them die. A lot.

I just have one question: what the recommended starting level for this campaign? I am playing it on the safe side and telling my party to make level 2 characters, but I have heard anywhere from level 1-4. We'll probably have a party of 5-6 for reference, and I'm talking with my group to make sure they have a well balanced party ready for slaughter. Thanks for the help!
