Has there been any ETA for the hard copies?

Fingers crossed for July/August. We're trying to get a massive order to the printer, about 7 books, that we have been working on (that's why no new material for a bit).

We still have to get issue 6 out (in editing now), and we've got an additional surprise for the RA subscription.

Are people saying RA sub #5 is available? I got an email with a download code for my CD sub #5, but not for my RA sub.

Just checked, and nothing automatically added...

(I should use this email - FGGsubscriptionhelp@gmail.com - for help to get my RA #5?)

Dude, Im just trying to survive the next 4 months lol After this barrage, Im taking a nap for a month. :-)

PS Truth be told, 4 of those are the subscription books (2 for CD and 2 for RA), so some of these you have coming, already paid for. yay, silver lining :-(

Which side is benefiting from the imbalance? PF or S&W ?

Very nice silver lining:) Three maybe I can handle. Besides, if I didn't like you Skeeter, it wouldn't be so easy to give you a hard time:)

Sounds like your nap will be well deserved!

PF, its an environment-type book, that is very nicely done...and weirdly enough may be helpful in Mummy's Mask. Go figure.

Ahhhh, the desert/Arabian/Middle Eastern looking book, Dunes of Desolation, right? Can't wait! When can I buy that one?? :-)

How about we finish it first? :-)

And this is exactly why we don't usually announce things until they are close at hand. You have a couple more months to wait.

SG

Ah, well... I'm a pretty good waiter! No worries Skeeter, I'll still look forward to picking it up. Thanks for writing good stuff that I like to buy!

My wife has a character from that area so she will be looking forward to it when it comes out. She is a dervish that worships Ishtar. Interesting that this ends up as her Razor Coast character though. No worries on the wait Skeeter.

Why would someone favorite a frown? You are never going to make everyone happy. This time the pathfinder people will be more happy. Last year there was a lot of S&W. I just want to game and have a good time.

Shadow Lodge

I favorites the frown because I agree with the frown. Pathfinder already had a 900 lbs gorilla of an exclusive (as well as a couple of other books) from FGG.

LET THE SCALES BE BALANCED!!!!

900 pages of adventures for S&W, with no Pathfinder translations!!!

FWIW, it wasnt intended as a frown it was meant to be a sad face. As in "That's disappointing" not "That's wrong".

.
I dont think what happened last year is relevant, really (was there really more S&W? I thought there was always going to be more PF). I'd expect FGG to generally favor Pathfinder releases when they can't do both - that's where the market is, after all.

I just wish the world was different. :)

That response kinda bums me out. I completely understand what Steve's intent is, but we honestly don't really prefer one system over the other. A couple of us play S&W in our home games, a couple play Pathfinder. Our releases are based more on "Where will this book fit?" than specifically targeting Pathfinder or S&W.

And yes, currently, Pathfinder is a larger market BY FAR. But our business model is to come up with a kick-ass idea, and then see if its viable for each system. Frequently, it works for both. Sometimes, it only works for one or the other.

And trust me, there is the nucleus of an idea that would only work for S&W, and if we can get it nailed down, the S&W crowd should really like it (I hope).

After EZG's glowing, nay, glaringly hot like the sun glowing review of Fire as she Bears (which I admit I haven't got into yet) a possible deserty type book sounds great.

Personally I like when FGG releases books that have only one system... costs me half as much :p

Sorry, skeeter. It wasn't meant to be a thing - just a kind of "I like Swords & Wizardry" cheer, crammed into a smiley. I'm not really down about it, promise. You guys are awesome.

I play largely what the majority of my players want to play. If it were up to me I would probably still be playing AD&D 1E. I have been dragged screaming and kicking from one version to another since, but I stick to one at a time. I do try and stay out of the edition wars though. As long as people are having fun, that is the real goal right? The Frogs don't disappoint me much. Skeeter, Bill and all do a lot of hard work to bring us a lot of fun for very little in return. I just want to say thanks:)

Any new stories? I just tied in the wilderness sections of Sword of Air pretty nicely here I think--the roving Warband of Orcus will be a nic e wilderness addition to any RA campaign

Hey guys,
Question about the Oracle on lv 3 of Rappan Athuk. My guys (PCs) are just meeting this wonderfully mysterious wanted some advice on how to best utilize the skull oracle. So the book suggests that the Oracle has access to the spell Contact Outer Planes once a week, meaning it could only give one word answers to questions. The book suggests a bit more latitude with this creature, stating that it “… answers one general knowledge question per week, and it usually answers truthfully, though cryptically. For serious questions, it demands a sacrifice. … The Oracle knows and can reveal all—for a price.”
It then suggested that it can answer easy, hard, and even help solve puzzles, which to me speaks to more than a 1 word answer… So, I’m thinking brief and cryptic is the way to go rather than holding too firm on the 1 word response, but wanted to see what people think/have done. Thanks!
Jeff…

Bill Webb wrote:

That's how I played it Bill and I liked the way it felt! Gave nice, accurate, but riddle-ish responses, for example referring to the Intellect Devourer on level 6A by saying:

“Within the black pyramid that has no entrance, lays a trapped creature, frozen in time. This small master has the ability to save you from your rival, although it too will field an army and seek new territory.”
So it told them where to find the critter (important for meta-plot reasons), that it can help them, but also that it’ll try to eat someone's brain as well.

I've been looking to put together a Rappan Athuk / SV pbp (S&W version). If anyone is interested, message me.

Well guys, it happened! I had mass deaths and a very near TPK this weekend! Wanted to share with fellow RA fans- hey SPOLIERS, so beware.

My players (6 PCs, all 8th level) made it to the Upper Temple (level 4) after about 20 sessions in and around Rappan Athuk- including extensive adventuring in the Mouth of Doom and some trips in the Gut. We’d previously only lost one PC, but that was due to meta-plot not directly related to RA, so I don’t really count it. And then they strolled into the Temple… Not rested, some wounds from a previous fight, only partially buffed and all hell broke loose.

The guys (a psionic vitalist, a soul knife, a witch, stonelord paladin, rouge, and monk) managed to take Zehn down in one round, and stared to cut swaths through the acoyltes and clerics. The vrock summoned its brother and the numerous clerics began to heal each other, and the tide began to turn… After 4 or 5 rounds, the masses of evil humans and demons were defeated and the group all alive, but then Nadroj and his spectre posse road on in and began level draining… And damn does energy drain suck! Particularly when you’re being held by Black Tentacles, which crushes your limp body when you fall… The spectres also took a round or two to finish off some dying acolytes and priests that rose as spawn during the extended fight…. Look reinforcements for the baddies!

The rouge and the vitalist both were slain by specters and rose as spawn during the fight, and Nadroj slew the witch and the soul knife to stop them from mucking about. The witches intelligence use of her familiar and the chill touch spell kept it fluid as spectres fled in a panic, but wasn’t enough to change the outcome. The paladin was eventually knocked out and lay bleeding, but stable, while the enlightened monk/psionic fist PRC, managed to finish off the surviving spectres one by one and ended the fight as the only man standing with 4 negative levels and his 5 friends all around him… Now it’s up to seeing if the monk and paladin can get themselves out of the dungeon and raise their companions.

I know in the book it says that this is the combat that legends are made of, and I just wanted to thank the Frog God frogs and say that for my group it really was 25 rounds of crazy, finger nail biting terror and excitement. Thanks guys! It was a blast!

The temples are always fun fights that guarantee at least a few PC deaths. I think my most epic temple fight was the one on level 12.

I can't wait until my poor unsuspecting PCs get to the temple. They are totally lost right now...

I followed the words in the book and played it hard, which I recommend. We all had a blast and it was a battle we'll not soon forget. Now it's on to rescuing the survivors, raising the dead, and figuring out who's dumb enough to go back down!

LOL

I had played five one off sessions with some of my group over the past year, and was actually hoping to start them on the Lost City of Barakus when we really began in earnest but they really wanted to continue RA.

Almost lost one the first day to the most dangerous monster on level 1.

Rappan Athuk Reloaded had 5 golden tickets out of 1000 boxes--various prizes including 1 that was free product for life. Only one has been found-uniquely signed "Orcus and Tsathogga" instead of "Bill and Clark". The other 4 are still out there in a (probably) unopened copy.

FGG will honor golden tickets from Necromancer. One was free pdfs for life, one was free books for life, one was a trip to a Con (all expenses paid except airfare) and the last I forget wgat I wrote on the ticket (its been 8 years).

Out of sheer curiosity, did the rest of the golden tickets ever get claimed?

Publisher, Frog God Games

Nope--just the one

Wow, that's wild. Seeing some of the prices online, I suppose many of them were never opened to keep the value up. Kinda sad, really. That's a great marketing tool.

So, in RA reloaded there are some creatures who were replaced in Pathfinder due to IP issues.

For those that have played both I am curious whether to to go with the original way it was written or is the Pathfinder version actually better.

I think that it would be a shock to find those two iconic monsters in a Pathfinder version. We have played Pathfinder since the BETA version came out. I don't think they will expect it. If I do it that way I will likely convert the creatures a bit. Maybe even throw an Advanced Bestiary template in there somewhere.

Opinions...?

Bill what do you think?

3.5 -> pathfinder isn't that hard of a conversion if you do it yourself

Nope, my ticket in 592 is brown and signed Bill and Clark.

My box was 992 and it did not have one either.

Session #3 starts in 3 hours. I have had one death so far, that was in session #2.

No other Deaths so far. Darn it!

However, this is about something else. As I was cleaning out some of my external computer storage I ran across a map of The Mouth of Doom that had been converted to 1 square = 5 feet, and had all traps and secret doors removed. Stupidly I deleted all copies but I was sane enough to print a copy. So I would now like to know where it came from and are there other levels that have had the same treatment.

So if anyone knows what I am speaking of I would like to know what you know about it.

I just started two new sessions of RA PBP. I started one and another group asked me to pick up one that had just started that had been abandoned by the GM.

So, I have been running RA for a year+ now...my group is level 10.

There have been 3 TPKs (the spell confusion has been particularly deadly) and a number of other deaths.

Some thoughts I've had:

1) This is a very treasure rich environment.
I suggest discussing wealth with your players to find out what they want out of the adventure. If they want to become the most powerful they can be and overwhelm things even more than they would otherwise, tell them to enjoy the wealth.
However, my group has come up with an interesting solution, spend 'excess' wealth on things like an airship, crew, and other non-combat luxuries.

2) Decide in advance how you want to deal with death or TPKs.
My group keeps backup characters prepped and updated in case they will be needed.

3) Initially the entire dungeon was exciting, but as they got into some of the deeper levels it seems that there are more and more of 'you run into things you handle without flinching' mixed with 'start running for your life'.
We initially wanted to run it 'as written' but now I either have to hand-waive the really weak combats or I have to spruce them up. I get that this is a normal occurrence to some extent but the CR disparity on some levels seems pretty big.

4) Finally, read the levels before using them, there are moments of head scratching. The maps do not always conform to the text.

With all that said, overall, I have enjoyed RA and look forward to running it to the end.

I concur with Gauss. There are times I don't even apply some of the random encounters as the creatures are useless against a 6 member party of Level 8+ PC's. But it's still a lot of fun.
