Well, I'm glad to report the judges have established all the items receiving "automatic bids" into the contest and they're now in the process of spending "golden tickets" on the "at-large bids." Alternates are being designated in a similar fashion. We should all be on record by sometime tomorrow. Then, we'll review all our comments on each item and adjust them for readability and public consumption. After that, Ross and Gary will take over to get the forum ready. And, hopefully, the guest judges can get started a little early on their feedback for this year's designers.

I have to say, it's been an interesting mix this year. You can tell which designers have really applied themselves in not only trying to stand out with an innovative, compelling idea, but also those who tightened down on the presentation, professional polish, and thorough mechanics. Those are all very good design goals as they're ultimately what sets apart the Keep's from the Top 32. There's going to be a lot of excited folks in just a few days. Best of luck to everyone. The judges (and voting public) are eager to see all your names on the other side. Get ready to kick this contest into high gear. 'Cause, it's about to get real.

*And then Neil woke up and looked over to the calender to see that it was only December 6th, 2011, and the judging has yet to begin. The long hours of reading had all been a strange, strange dream.*

*Worse yet those amazing nights with a strange, dark, and seductive woman have faded into memory leaving him with a deep longing for a love he never really experienced. As he tosses aside yet another item called "Elminster's Staff of Gandalf Finding and Hitler Killing" he dies a little inside.*

Yay! Perhaps in my greatest hopes I may have the opportunity to continue on this quest which by all accounts is an amazing opportunity just for submitting to round one. Round two or more would just ad a pat on the back from my wife for being a gaming nerd and that would be amazing too! And for some reason I am taken back to the the chocolate factory and wanting to return the everlasting gobstopper...

I never thought my life could be anything but catastrophe
But suddenly I begin to see a bit of good luck for me

'Cause I've got a golden ticket
I've got a golden twinkle in my eye

I never had a chance to shine, never a happy song to sing
But suddenly half the world is mine, what an amazing thing

'Cause I've got a golden ticket
I've got a golden sun up in the sky

I never thought I'd see the day when I would face the world and say
Good morning, look at the sun

I never thought that I would be slap in the lap of luxury
'Cause I'd have said it couldn't be done, but it can be done

I never dreamed that I would climb over the moon in ecstasy
But nevertheless, it's there that I'm shortly about to be

'Cause I've got a golden ticket
I've got a golden chance to make my way and with a golden ticket, it's a golden day

<.< >.> Actually, I probably don't but someone had to quote the song.

I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't unless somehow you know you do not, chin up mistress and let the fates decide. Do not send bad energy in such a manner =)

Ok Neil, starting to scare me with "auto-matic bids" and "at-large bids". Next your going to say you have computers that spit out the results based on five polls in which freelancers and game designers vote to determine the "Top 32".

Here's how to pick me with a Golden Ticket:

1. Choose your favorite die and a corresponding number of items still out of the top 32, one of which must, somehow, randomly, be mine.

2. Roll a '1'.

3. That's my item, because lately 1s and I are tied together with a certain destiny.

Spoiler:
By lately, I mean as long as dice and I have co-existed in the planet.

Who is this Hitler person? The only reference I can find online is to some obscure painter who got killed by a wizard.

lol

mostly because I can commiserate with this.
Spoiler:
our GM asked us to roll 10 d20's via email (to save time on will saves, sense motive checks, etc.) I 'replied all' with a picture of my rolls. Everyone else wrote back, "those must be Scott's dice, there are five 1s!" my highest was a 15 :P

Perhaps you should buy those precision dice.

That way they will all be precisely one.

perhaps try a different game system where you want to roll low instead of high. I can't think of one off the top of my head that uses d20, but you get the idea.

But then again that means less time for Pathfinder and that is, of course, heresy!

Ask your GM to let you roll all dice for the monsters.

Dedicated Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9 aka OwlbearRepublic

Here's a trick: GMs, being less invested in dice rolls than players, scoff at player's dice superstitions. So ask your GM to let you take a custom Feat that gives you bennies whenever you roll a 1. Balance it so that it's slightly-underpowered if you roll a 1 every 20 rolls, but gets better the more 1's you roll... then watch your bad luck turn to pure profit.

Maybe you could get your GM to allow you to use the inverse of whatever number is on the top of the die. Thus:

1=20
2=19
3=18
...
19=2
20=1

Of course, then you'd probably start rolling lots of 20s.

I did. Then again, I go to the school that just won the National title, Roll Tide Roll.

I keep trying not to think I made it. I really do, but I also want to make it and I keep imagining that I do. Oh well, back to brainstorming for the next round just in case.

Indeed you were good sir, but March Madness is all people, good ole fashion commitee selection...then speed66 had to throw computers in there, and that is the evil, dreaded BCS...DIE BCS DIE.....ugh, erm, ok I think I am better.

Mmmm.... March Madness .... *sigh*

Golden Ticket Time! only 5 days to go...

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut

"Golden ticket" time is over. The judges have all made their selections. The tech team should be setting up the forums and getting ready for the guest judges to add their commentary. Of course, the snow-plosion in Seattle and multiple, work-from-home days may have slowed them down a little, but I'm guessing they can work remotely and still manage things just fine.

Could we get a response/comments on our item even though it was rejected? And how?

I'm assuming you're new to the competition this year? The way it works is that no one receives any information about their item's destiny until the Top 32 get announced on Jan. 24th. At that time, you'll quickly know if you made the Top 32 or not. And, shortly thereafter, individuals can request feedback on their item (i.e., how the judges assessed it during the evaluation period) by posting in a special thread that will be created called "Critique My Item" or something similar to that. We don't want people creating or posting in such a thread yet, however. Be patient. You'll know the outcome of your submission in 5 days.

VPN and RDP, a tech's two best friends.

That said, the tension is about to drive me crazy, er... crazier.
Oh January 24th, Why must you be so slow in getting here!

Vodka, and not having to deal with users are the tech's best friends :)

Well, I don't drink, delivering to many, many drunk greeks and having a propensity for embarrassing myself without alcoholic aid pretty much put me off.

That and the aforementioned technologies allow me to remote into work from 90 miles away and not have to drive close to 200 miles every weekend delivering sammiches.

I am the GM, and I do. :)

Seriously I lost two BBEG's in Savage Tide, by rolling a nat 1 on save or die spells. :) I lost another who could only fail on 1, 2, or 3. :) I also played an artificer with a 16 charisma (with racial bonuses) and a 7 con (had less hit points than the druid's companion :)

So I am all about the golden tickets :)

Interesting. Would you permit a feat like the one I presented? Would the player's luck have anything to do with your decision?

I think everyone in the top32 already got notified (to check for email-adresses, possibility of disqualification and so on).

So everyone with no email has not made it into the top32.

Or am I wrong and the superstars-to-be do NOT get notified in advance (and that there is still some shred of hope ;).

The Top 32 aren't informed early, they hear about it at the same time as everyone else.

On a similar note, the four alternates are also informed about their being alternates at the same time as the top 32 is revealed. I just checked and the time stamp says I got my email one minute past 2 PM Pacific time last year.

"We have bad news and good news for you."

I would be keeping my fingers crossed but I just didn't have enough time to finish off my item to enter it. On the plus side it does give me a whole year to polish the item ready for next years competition. By then my Stick of Stickiness will be unbeatable, and extremely shiny.

I agree with Marv, before the contest gets properly underway and the top 32 are chosen, we should all give a big hand to the judges for all their hard work.

Thank you for making this competition possible, judges!

It sounds like a heck of a lot of work to do, so I'll definitely join in that applause! Also, as a first-time entrant - and a newcomer to the site - I must say they've fostered a great atmosphere of friendly competition that is felt across the boards.

So, yeah. C'mon, guys. Group hug.
