Well I mentioned Heartseeker upthread but here's further adventures.

Story 1

Spoiler:
In a 'bad DM moment' I had the party encounter Artemis Entreri at low levels, and they dedicated themselves to killing him. Finally they think they're of a high enough level to take him out and plot to attack him. In reply (remember, this is 2e, where AE was supposed to be 'a step ahead' of the PCs) he acquires a scarab of life protection and kidnaps the Swashbuckler's wife and kid. (elven noble he bedded and got pregnant. MArried in absentia) so they have to go to Calimport to fight him. He takes out the thief/assassin in one lucky hit, so it quickly is down to Tybalt and Artemis. Ty's relying on Heartseeker to tip the scales. He disarms Artemis' dagger, and in a desperate "Gods my dice are sucking" move, Artemis goes for an expert disarm on Heartseeker.

I make the roll and he gets Heartseaker in his off hand. She immediately heals him, undoing all Ty's hard work. The final fight takes two hours of real time and game time, resulting in a chase across roofs, expert disarms resulting in them each fighting with the other guy's weapons, and Ty losing like 3 levels to his own dagger (much to my amusement). Finally, Ty wins and Artemis Entreri is dead. After getting his buddy raised, they celebrate by putting Heartseeker in a lead box and dumping her in the ocean.

Now I told you that story to tell you this one.

Spoiler:
After getting rid of Heartseeker, Tybalt fell on hard times. With out her Heal 1/day he couldn't last as long in fights. We went about three months of game time, and I was running a modified Trouble at Tragador (Yes, I'd gotten better as a DM). Our two heroes had the idea of buying one of the abandoned shops, giving the widow enough money to get out of town and a new life. While cleaning out the back, they find a box with a ornate lock. Opening the box they find, resting on a bed of crushed velvet... Heartseeker.

The rogue's (the one almost killed by having the dagger thrown at him above) player starts freaking out. Majorly freaking. He's demanding that they throw the box in a river or something. Ty's player promises he'll 'keep it so they can keep an eye on it' but he won't use it.

Sure enough, they're fighting the drow and he's low on HP. The player passes me a note. On it is a picture of Heartseeker and the words 'It's Suppertime.' Yes, I had succeeded in getting the player addicted to the life draining dagger. Eventually he said "If I can get that <female dog> out of the blade and reincarnated... I'm marrying her."

Old-school grognards, represent! Who could forget the ring from Encounter Area 4 in 1E's "S2, White Plume Mountain". When this ring is found, the players are spoken to telepathically:

Bad, bad Ring wrote:
"Stop before you pick me up. I confer the following powers on my wearer: invisibility, haste(8 charges), I act as a ring of protection(+1),confer 100% protection from charm, flying once per day, spell turning(10 charges), treasure finding(6 charges) and one wish. The only drawback is that I eat one hit point per year permanently. But I must be put on before leaving this room, as I must be worn for me to leave. However, once I am removed from the finger, all my powers are lost. So you must decide right now who will wear me permanently"

The ring is a ruse to get the players fighting amongst themselves - for although all of it's powers work in the room it is found in, once outside it fails to work at all.

My players decided to fight it out to decide who got to keep the magnificent ring, reasoning that if any harm befell them they were "safe" in the "knowledge" they could always use the wish to restore lost limbs/lives. Unfortunately the fight got out of hand as voracious characters slew each other until the party assassin/magic user grabbed the ring, hasted himself, went invisible, hid and then assassinated the remaining combatant and kept the ring for himself. He decided not to "restore" his "companions", took all their gear and promptly left to try his luck (unsuccessfully) finding the actual intelligent weapons in the module, Whelm, Wave and Blackrazor. I say "actual" because the ring, once outside the room, couldn't even talk! ;^)

Liberty's Edge

I love that Oceanshieldwolf. I'm going to have to hunt that module down.

My most memorable (and only) encounter with an intelligent (well, somewhat aware) weapon was Stormbringer. I was playing a low level Melnibornean from Elric d20 (in a home brew world). My character was the only one who knew what the blade was and he knew he couldn't wield it safely and so it was wrapped up and kept until my character could figure out what to do with it.

At this point I had an out of game talk with the DM, explaining how powerful stormbringer was and was he really sure he wanted this in his game. He said yes, so I went with it.

Later on, we came across a demon too powerful for us to defeat (meant to be the campaign's BBEG) who wanted Stormbringer. The other pcs want to hand it over, but my character refuses to hand it over and draws it. The demon knows my character can't wield it safely so he's not afraid.

Unfortunately what the demon (and the DM) doesn't realize is that "can't wield it safely" =/= "can't wield it." 77 points of constitution drain (or damage, or whatever it is that actually takes Con to 0 and kills) to the demon and a massive influx of magical power to my character that he can't come close to handling and both of us are dust on the wind. The other pcs look at the sword and refuse to go any where near it. The game ends shortly there as the DM's entire plot has fallen apart and without my character to guide them the other characters fall to infighting and eventually split up to go their seperate ways.

Still the world was saved from the demon who sought to destroy it, so all is well that ends well I guess.

I am out sick today. will do two give aways tomorrow

Liberty's Edge

My most memorable experience with an intelligent magic item was just after converting our AD&D 2nd edition characters to 3.0 rules and fighting a boss type enemy and looting the body finding myself with an awesome new cloak with a full page of abilities. So, I start writing them down on the blank side of my character sheet. I feel better and better with each ability listed in great detail...

When the DM finally saw that I was copying down all the abilities that this cloak had he told me not to worry about writing it down. I thought to myself and responded "I should write it down just in case I need to use it tonight" thinking that he would print me a copy for next week's game session. So we continue for another hour doing some Role-Playing and exploring more to complete our mission and I finally get done writing down all the nuances and we come up against another boss type enemy. And guess what this intelligent magic cloak does? And, guess who disappears directly after?

Vomitorium!

Sovereign Court

I always thought an adventure in an abbatior would be great, lots of hanging meat means lots of cover and concealment, and think of all the edged weapons and bull rush attacks and improvised weapons. I would love to see a really exciting map for a slaughterhouse and remember, they're usually two story with a catwalk.

Liberty's Edge

I like the thought of an ancient giant's tomb, for many of the same reasons an abbatior would be cool, huge sarcophagi for cover and concealment, climbing requirements to get to higher burial shelves, large weapons and shields that could come into play, etc. All with the creep factor of standing near, climbing over, or standing/hiding in giant corpses.

Kind of like an elephant grave yard? Cool!

Every Weekday Give Away 101 Renegade Class Feats Just tell us about any non paizo class your like (or want) to play in your Pathfinder game.

Shadow Lodge

Probably the Scout from Adventuring Classes by Tripod Machine. The 3.5 Scout was my favorite class, and I like their take on the subject.

Dark Archive

i like the Knight from Adamant Entretainment, mainly because its awsome for a quick dip to get hospitality. such a useful ability for low level games

TOZ wrote:

I'm curious enough about their take on that that I think I'll grab a copy.

Pathfinder Adventure, Adventure Path, Lost Omens Subscriber

Pact Binder from Secrets of Pact Magic. There are a few tweaks I would make (change all the Su abilities to Sp), but overall I really like the feel of binding spirits to do your will.

Liberty's Edge

I'm in two games and I've got a psychic warrior and a vitalist (soul thief) both using psionics rules from dream scarred press, and if I were in more games, I'd probably be running more psionicists. I've never played a godling or a mystic godling but when I take up the reigns of DMing they'll be allowed in my games (they fit the world very well).

Sentinel and Avenger from Dragon #310! When will my hunger of non-LG paladins be satisfied?!?!?!?!?!

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

Not counting the Damascarran? ;-)

I have to go with the Soul Weaver from Pact magic.

Unfettered from Monte's Arcana Evolved. Not truly pathfinderized - but it is the best version of a derring do swashbuckler I have seen.

Rite Publishing wrote:

I'm a huge fan of a lot of the SGG classes. My games have included PC archons, armigers, a bunch of death mages, dragonriders, godlings (1 clever & 1 eldritch), maguses, shadow assassins, time theives, vanguagerds, and war masters. Those were all awesome, and I allow all SGG material in my games.

I've also had a Rite taskshaper (which worked really well -- better than I expected, to be honest) and a Tome of Secrets warlock (which didn't work out well, though I'd probably still allow one if a player wanted to try it again).

I would love to get to play a SGG witch hunter character idea I have (multiclass witch/witch hunter), but the right campaign hasnt come along. ;D

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Toss-up between 1E incantatrix and 1E deathmaster. Both from Dragon magazine. I think incantatrix was reprised for 3.5, but the deathmaster moulders still in a dank 1E grave, when classes had titles at each level... At 4th level, the deathmaster is a Necropolite!
