Who knows. We've published so much stuff that even the creative director has trouble with it all.

But the thing is... Geb is a nation of evil undead. Now that I think of it, they DO export a fair amount of food, but they don't import. Their trade goes OUT, not IN, and as such they don't really need an influx of merchants and travelers into the nation so the situation remains the same. No regular bus routes for tourists.

I notice that web article series that featured the monstrous crab is called the "Lost Coast". Did you already have Varisia and its Lost Coast created at that time, and if yes, did you have Varisia's Lost Coast in mind when you came up with the article? Assuming, of course, that you remember at all.

Would publishing a place called "Lost Coast" for Wizards back in 2004 present any sort of a copyright problem for Golarion's Lost Coast?

The Lost Coast is in fact a real-world location—it's the name of the coastline of Northern California north of where I grew up.

I've always been intrigued by the name and felt that it had a lot of mystery involved in it, so I've used the name a few times for various RPG projects I've been involved in.

Varisia itself was partially created for Pathifnder years after I wrote that article, but other portions of it from my home brew were created as far back as 1983 or thereabouts.

In any event, no, naming a region "The Lost Coast" isn't a copyright problem. Any more than naming something "the Great Plains" or "the Vast Swamp" or something else that's not a made-up word is a copyright problem. If I'd called the article "Monsters of The Sasmarak Coast" and then called the Sandpoint region "The Sasmarak Coast" AND presented both coastlines with identical story elements, then yes, that's a copyright problem. That's not what's going on here. Both of them are, in effect, easter eggs that point to the region I grew up.

I don't. My home page is paizo.com so if I log into the internet after work at home, and sometimes when I do and I see folks have asked questions I'll just answer them there and then.

Wow, most excellent, I missed that bit, when did you start?

Who are your players and their PCs? Is it set in Greyhawk or Golarion?

If Golarion where did you place the temple and who is playing the role of Iuz and Zuggtmoy? (I really enjoyed your article for her in Dragon, thanks for that, I would assume some demon on the level of Treerazer is trapped under the Temple.)

If on Golarion, who is in the role of Prince Thrommel?

Did you give the players the poem that starts off "The two united in the Past ..."

Did they fight Lareth the Beautiful in the Moathouse? What INT did you give him, I remember it was never given in the original so I gave him a 14, and bumped the Supreme Commander Hedrack's INT to 12 because it was a very middle of the road 10 (and yes all the above is from memory).

Ah, that makes sense. I had a bit of a hard time understanding what their relationship was with their neighboring nations since active trade and cold war seemed mutually exclusive to me. Thanks for taking the time to shine some light on that. So they honor their agreements out of convenience, they are not particularly aggressive towards their neighbors (anymore), but if you find yourself on their soil you should probably keep out of sight and armed to the teeth if you don't want to join their export business the hard way.

Yup; started running it about a year ago, maybe a year and a half. Hard to remember. Wes started a campaign for the editors, and then Rob McCreary felt left out that there wasn't a developer game so he came to me and said "I've never even played Temple of Elemental Evil." So I decided to run that game for the developers.

Since that point, our developer staff has doubled, and now the game has nine players—all of the developers who work at Paizo: Rob McCreary, Adam Daigle, Mark Moreland, Owen Stephens, Crystal Frasier, Amanda Hamon Kunz, Linda Zayas-Palmer, John Compton, and Logan Bonner. Logan's a designer now, but when we started the game, he was a developer, so he got grandfathered in, but the table joke goes that if his character dies, he's OUT! :-P

It's set on Golarion, on the Isle of Kortos northeast of Absalom off in the boonies.

Zuggtmoy's role is unchanged. Iuz's role is played by someone else the PCs haven't realized yet so I'll keep that a secret here too, but he's a well-known Golarion deity.

Prince Thrommel is in the role of Prince Thrommel, except he's a high-ranking merchant prince type guy from Absalom.

I'm not sure if they've gotten that poem yet, but the goal is to give them the FULL experience. If the adventure says there's 10 bugbears in the room in the moathouse and the PCs are all 1st level... so be it.

They did fight Lareth. Rob's character chopped off his head and kept it in a bag as a trophy, 'cause apparently that's what the battle bards of the Linnorm Kingdoms do. For most of the stats, I've been simply swapping in characters from NPC Codex or adventure paths. I did actually stat up Laerth though because he's a key NPC. I gave him an INT of 8; it was his dump stat. Haven't done Hedrack yet—the PCs HAVE had a short conversation with him via a mirror of mental prowess they ended up destroying down on level three though...

They remain pretty aggressive toward Holomog to the south, actually. But there's a distance of wildlands (including the Field of Maidens) that helps to prevent day to day fighting.

Hey James,

I have a question about this development in my Wrath of the Righteous game.

Wrath of the Righteous Spoilers:

My party ended up being betrayed by Nurah after a stray Holy Smite gave her away inside the citadel. Rather than locking them into the room with the fake Sword of Valor, she locked the front door of the Citadel, block their exit.

After this they ended up facing "Iomeade" (Janeamine), and after a brief flight she fled. In actuality I had her teleport away, try her summons, and then use Vampiric Touch to restore some of her depleted health. Anyways, by the time she gets back the party already made it to the false vault. And soon thereafter Irabeth dies.

Since the party hasn't been able to rest, and they're already deep into the citadel. They decide to make for the close parapet, leaving Irabeth's body behind while they went to clear a path.

I kind of winged it here as they weren't in any shape to face off with Janeamine again. And decided to have Janeamine disguise as Irabeth.

Anyways, to the party's shock they come back to find Irabeth alive, claiming "Irabeth" brought her pack. (Implying to them that for some reason beyond her Janeamine brought her back). I don't know why but the party bought it out of character. And they didn't pass their sense motive checks to detect the bluff. And they didn't pass their perception checks to spot the disguise. And through some really terrible rolls not even Anevia knew what was up.

So I'm at a loss for what to do with this.

I'm not sure how long she can keep the ruse up. I tabled it while the party went into to finish off the Citadel. Which they did over the course of the next day.

Which meant the queen appointed her leader of Drezen.

Do you have any suggestions?

In and out of character no PC knows about this, so I could brush it under the table without them knowing. I didn't intended for it to last this long, I thought at best she'd make it back to their camp and be found out by Anevia. Letting them deal with her when they had a large number of allies around.

Hmmm.

Spoiler:
Anevia would be somewhat distraught and relieved that Irabeth died and came back, and would likely spend time with her offscreen, at which point I suspect she would VERY QUICKLY figure out that her "Irabeth" wasn't who she said she was. I'd then have fake Irabeth either kill or imprison Anevia, and/or replace her with her own proxy or spin a story that she sent Anevia out on a special mission. This should give the PCs a few more chances to see through things, and if they don't, then just have the PCs get hit more often by ambushes or have the bad guys know more about them or the like. Eventually the PCs will start to suspect a mole in their midst, and clues should at that point lead back to Irabeth.

Thanks James! If ever you do a Campaign Journal let us know!

That is one big adventuring party. Funny when Mark Moreland was in our game group he said he would never have interest in playing an old school game, I guess that's at least in part incorrect now.

They destroyed a minor artifact? I think the original Mirror was one.

What village did you place for Hommlet if you put the temple on the Isle of Kortos? Is there a Nulb?

What demon did the PCs fight? I can't recall one on the upper levels, unless its one summoned when they mess with the gems in the temple.

In the original, if the PCs do not press the assault the recruiting factions of the temple actually grow their numbers. Did you implement that?

I hope you they have fun with the Wand of A Wonder.

Spoiler:
Did you send a 10th Level Assassin after them after they killed Lareth? I made my assassin the half sister of Lareth, who also was his lover (yaaaay Chaotic Evil). Almost killed the whole party, got six out of seven PCs way back in 1st Ed.

Spoiler:
Excellent ideas!

I did have Anevia and Irabeth go offscreen immediately after the group's return. And aside from some discussion the next morning, to decide they would both take the day off, they haven't interacted since.

The only thing differently is that I'd assumed that "Irabeth" would charm Anevia, but what you suggested plays more to the group's strengths than that. They'll likely suspect something as soon as Anevia is "out on a special mission." At the worst that'll naturally invite them to question "Irabeth" about the nature of this special mission inviting more bluff/perception rolls.

I really wanted them to find and restore Irabeth/Anevia as those are literally their favorite NPCs and they're rather attached to them.

The player who was controlling Irabeth that night left feeling really bad for getting her killed, even though it wasn't really his fault at all (And that was even when he thought that she came back to life!). That gave me second thoughts about going through with the whole thing, especially since it was my improv and not a suggestion called out in the AP.

Thanks again for, you know writing the AP and everything! We're having an absolute blast! The Sword of Valor book was so heavily referenced that it fell apart a little. I was not kind to it! I mean that in the best way possible.

It is indeed an enormous party... about 3 more than my normal maximum, but I go in to each game with the mindset of "We'll get done what we get done" and try not to get hung up on "We must stay on schedule to finish the adventure!" It'll last as long as it needs to.

As for Mark... he's the one who most often doesn't show up for the game—he always seems to have something else going on. Which is fine, because with 9 players, I'm pretty okay with some of them not showing up now and then! ;-)

Mirrors of mental prowess are SUPER expensive, but they're not minor artifacts.

The village I placed for Hommlet and Nulb are Hommlet and Nulb. It's a home campaign so I, like any other GM running a home campaign in Golarion, get to change things as I wish or add in elements from other settings as needed.

They fought a hezrou—if you mess with one of the braziers in the room just below the central pit, it summons a "Type I Demon" but I misread that as a "Type II Demon" so they fought a hezrou instead of a vrock. Difference was pretty minor, at that point a CR 9 or CR 11 foe against a group of 4th level characters is equally over the top.

The PCs are doing pretty good at pressing the assault so far and haven't yet given the Temple much of a chance to grow their numbers. That may change in the future depending on how things go.

Rob's character ended up with the "rod of a wonder" and has, so far, caused a tree to grow. He used that in the hezrou fight, in fact, and that helped bolster party morale due to its outrageousness and convinced them to stay and fight instead of flee... they still ended up having to use nearly a dozen plot twist cards though.

Spoiler:
Nope. They've got enough going on.

So I almost got Wes to spill what the next campaign setting hard cover was on the Know Direction podcast tonight. Just so you know it isn't only you.

So has there been anything written for Golarion on the Titans and their place in the world? In the Bestiary it refers to the battle between the gods and the titans. Was that an event that occurred for Golarion as well? Thanks!

If there were a cleric of the axiomite godmind, what would be its areas of concern and likely domains? What about the formian queen of Arzanixtria? Delsandrianix of the wasp-formians? (Non-golarion: Primus of the modrons?)

Thanks much.

Some spoilery questions.

The mirror I mentioned

Spoiler:
Was the one the werewolves (or were they jackleweres) pretended to be the forces of good and have the party leave there weapons and items to bless. That was a minor artifact.

Has the party made allies within Nulb?

Have the party realized there are factions within the temple, seven in fact (in the original mod the four elemental factions, Lolth, Iuz, and Zuggtmoy each had a faction), that they can manipulate to the party's own ends?

Are you keeping the disguised double agent druidess in the room with the giants?

Have fun at your next game!

Hi James, I know this is more of a question for Wes, but he doesn't answer questions posted on his equivalent of this messageboard, so I thought you might have a view.

Devils are all about temptation and using temptation to corrupt souls. But of all the devils listed in the various Pathfinder products, there is no devil focused on the greatest temptation of them all.....no devil focused on sexual temptation......I know hell is misogynistic in the extreme, but I would have thought that Ardad Lili would have created some devils to seduce and make fools of men at the very least. Or have I misunderstood hell or missed the relevant devil type?

I'm up to my neck in Cheliax right now running the latest adventure path, but needed a "temptation devil" for a side adventure to bring the party up to the next level and couldn;t find one.

Apologies if this has been asked before

Tim

Hi James

we will be starting a Giant Slayers adventure path in the near future. and one of my players wants to make a halfling or gnome slayer that actually climbs the giants to hit vital areas akin to "shadow of the colossus"

here is a video of game play if you haven't seen or played it to give you an idea. check around the 2 minuet mark

my Question is how can i make this happen in the pathfinder rules? would it be more like climb checks vs CMD or more like ride checks? would slippers of spider climb help and how? or is just totally outside the scope of the game? are there any other classes / archetypes that you can think of that would fit this theme ?

Dear James,

Does fly gets effected by haste? It doesn't specifically say in the fly's text that you would gain "fly speed" (opposed to say... spider climb); so I am wondering if fly somehow works differently in that regard.

In short;
1)fly+haste: 60ft fly speed
2)fly+haste: 90ft fly speed

Which one is correct?

Dunno, frankly. I don't just sling about domains for deities; they're picked specifically and in a lot of cases (since this is often one of the ONLY places a player sees anything about a deity's personality emerge) I try to pick at least one domain that's thought provoking. Such as giving Pharasma the Water domain.

So, without getting into the headspae of the deities involved and doing a fair amount of thinking about it, I can't say for certain.

Law and Artifice would certainly be two of them. Community might be the third. As for the fourth, pick something fun that works but is non-intuitive.

Tim

That is indeed a Wes question, but whether or not sex is the "greatest temptation of all" depends 100% and ENTIRELY on the person in question. Sex isn't equally tempting to everyone.

Hi James

we will be starting a Giant Slayers adventure path in the near future. and one of my players wants to make a halfling or gnome slayer that actually climbs the giants to hit vital areas akin to "shadow of the colossus"

here is a video of game play if you haven't seen or played it to give you an idea. check around the 2 minuet mark

my Question is how can i make this happen in the pathfinder rules? would it be more like climb checks vs CMD or more like ride checks? would slippers of spider climb help and how? or is just totally outside the scope of the game? are there any other classes / archetypes that you can think of that would fit this theme ?

Look at the rules for Kaiju, I guess. I think MAYBE we mentioned this there, but otherwise... well... the game doesn't really handle this well at all. I would probably use Grapple mechanics plus Climb checks.

Dear James,

Does fly gets effected by haste? It doesn't specifically say in the fly's text that you would gain "fly speed" (opposed to say... spider climb); so I am wondering if fly somehow works differently in that regard.

In short;
1)fly+haste: 60ft fly speed
2)fly+haste: 90ft fly speed

Which one is correct?

90 feet is correct. Haste enhances all speeds.

Would be I correct in guessing what might have inspired it (aside from mythology and folklore)? :3

I have no idea. You'd have to ask Wes. I wasn't involved.

So what movies have you seen lately?

Crimson Peak (great)

Human Centipede 3 (cataclysmicly bad)
We Are Still Here (One of the best of the year, and a stealth Lovecraft movie to boot!)
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (very disappointing)
Everest (excellent)
The Green Inferno (Quite entertaining)
We Are The Night (Very good!)
Colour From The Dark (Bad bad bad, had to quit watching)
Let Us Prey (average)
Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead (Not terrible, but a bit too goofy)
Lost Soul (Fascinating!)
Pressure (entertaining)
Witching & B@!*~ing (fun but not great)
Blue Ruin (excellent)
The Nightmare (excellent)
The Vatican Tapes (wasted premise; meh movie)
Tremors 5 (lame and disappointing)
Chappie (not bad)
Cold Prey 2 (average)
Backcountry (excellent)
Dark Was The Night (Pretty good)
Lucy (goofy, but fun once I realized "Lucy" was a supervillain)

What would happen if a put a variety of bleeding-edge weapons with enough ammo to supply an army in the Paizo offices with everyone in them, removed all of the caffeine and sugar in the building, and locked down the place for three days?

Wayfinder 11 has the seduction devil (p.79).

Speaking of Wayfinder 11, Pathfinder #99 mentions that "Larger cities, such as Senara, are falling to the Glorious Reclamation" (p.3). Does that mean that Senara's going to be involved in Hell's Vengeance?
