Castle Scarwall in Minecraft

Curse of the Crimson Throne

I only recently began playing Minecraft (mostly so my nephew can play it when he visits me) and on the Xbox One at that. But I thought it might be fun to build Castle Scarwall in Minecraft, and, maybe, even other parts of Curse of the Crimson Throne.

This is the result of about 3 - 4 hours of dedicated work. A not insignificant amount of that time was spent just landscaping to get the room for what I've built so far. I'm sure this would be easier on the PC version, but...

Anyway, here is quick video of a brief fly-over and partial walkthrough of a few areas in what I've built so far.

As the build progresses, I'll try and upload more videos of it. I don't know how often I'll work on it, but the castle is currently the focus of my free time so... who knows?

That is going to be really cool when you finish it.

Don't forget the 15 foot ceiling heights and the 10 foot grid scale.

Here's an imgur album of progress on the castle.

Currently about 10 hours into the build for the castle. I've got another fly-by video rendering and then uploading to YouTube, so I'll try and get that up as soon as I can.

Well... F@@@.

I totally forgot about the ceiling height and the 10 ft. scale in the map. I doubled the scale of the map, just so I could follow the map as close as I could (and even then, there are several differences). As it stands right now, I've already built almost the entirety of the first level of the Castle. Technically, the castle I've built is already "to scale" as I doubled the map, which means I unintentionally scaled it.

However, the 15 ft. ceiling heights are going to have to be abandoned, unfortunately. With the current design of the castle, it's impossible for me to fit working staircases in most places. If I scaled up the castle to double the size (as I originally intended), it'd work fine, but that requires rebuilding the entire castle, and clearing even more land than I already did.

The second fly-over video is up!

Incredible how such a huge castle can look so claustrofobic from the inside.

Part of that is the scaling differences between Minecraft and Pathfinder. I'm roughly scaling it as 1 square on the map = 2 blocks in Minecraft, which would be technically correct. However, Minecraft doesn't have the same scale as battleboards do. In Minecraft, the avatar you control is actually 2 blocks tall, unlike on the battleboard where a medium sized humanoid is simply a single 5 ft. square.

If I were to have, perhaps, assumed a scale of 1 ft. square = 4 blocks wide and 2 blocks tall, this would double the size of the corridors. Then, to get a truly accurate size of the castle, I would double the size again. This is to match the scale of the map where ever square = 10 ft. and if we assume a 5 ft. square equals a 4x2x4 block, then each square on the map would equal an 8x4x8 block.

I might go back and rebuild this castle on PC one day. I know, with mods, clearing the land necessary to do so would be relatively quick. Building the castle itself isn't all that time consuming. Clearing the land took me a little over 4 hours, and the castle itself another 6 hours. I cleared part of the land in the beginning stages (for the first video), then build some of the castle, and then cleared the rest of it. When I cleared land the second time, I pretty much remained rooted to my seat for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

The rest of the time I spent building had intermittent breaks, for bathroom visits, lunch, dinner, playing with my niece and nephews etc. But that land clearing took the longest part of dedicated time for the build so far.

I've done a few builds in Minecraft with Pathfinder maps and maybe I can offer some help. The official minecraft block height is 3 feet. So this means a 15-foot stretch of floor in Pathfinder would be 5 blocks long, for example.

Oh god, that just makes scaling Pathfinder maps accurately all but impossible!

Yeah, rendering 5 foot squares into 1 meter blocks is gonna be tricky.

Still, your building's stone, and not easily threatened when the creepers mention how "that'sss a very nissse cassstle you have there..."

Update: My internet company is being stupid. They want my money, but are being lazy about processing my payment. I've been waiting a week for them to process my payment and in that time, they've turned off my internet until they "get it".

Anyway, Castle Scarwall is completely built. Overall, I'd say it's probably 85% accurate to the map. I messed up in scaling the first floor in a couple areas and so the second floor ended up noticeably different (but still very similar) in a few areas. Some areas I had to change, either to match the map (as opposed to the text) or because some things just couldn't be scaled at all. The stairs inside the wartower, for example, is one major area. Too many stairs with too little room for Minecraft's system.

Once I get my internet back, I'll upload a few videos, and several pictures of the castle in various states of progress. Over-all, I'm very happy with the build, and it also really helps to be able to visually picture everything (even if there are a few differences).

In the meantime, since my internet has been down, I also went ahead and built Carowyn Manor from Seven Days to the Grave. That build is as close to 100% accurate as I could get using Minecraft's system. It was actually a very easy build. The hardest part about building the manor was, actually, deciding how I was going to roof it.

If there are any other locations people want to see build in Minecraft, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Some places may be too big, or too complex to build correctly in Minecraft. Especially if they are multi-storied with staircases in a short amount of space.

Yay!!! Internet is back!

Okay, I'm in the process of uploading videos and images as we speak.

Here's a link to the YouTube Playlist with the 5 videos I captured of Castle Scarwall as I went along. Videos 4 and 5 showcases parts of the castle after it's been completed. The 6th video is of Carowyn Manor, which I think turned out splendidly.

[Edit] I'm going to try and capture a better video of the Castle to show off more rooms and stuff, though not entirely certain how I'm going to go about doing that. I may just use the Youtube Annotations to indicate which room is which, or divide sections of the castle up into different parts.

I think the Image album does a better job of showing off parts of the castle as I went a long, but my Xbox is taking forever to upload the images to the Xbox website so I can grab them off and upload them to imgur.

That is really, REALLY cool!
Good job!

I wish I could show you guys the pictures of Scarwall. Seems my Xbox has glitched and won't let me upload the pictures because they were taken while I was offline. Which is weird, cause my videos, achievements and other things all uploaded fine. :(
