I'm assuming you are going to the right? And please make a Listen/Move Silently check.

I'll assume that Berekiah & Melani will be down shortly

I follow Shariv down the corridor, staying alert and keeping an arrow nocked in case of danger.

Adaro will wait for the sneaky ones to give the clear, he may be small but he in not one of stealthy approaches.

The door is darkwood bound with iron, and while securely built, doesn't appear to be locked. You detect the faint scent of exotic-smelling smoke, like spices or incense are burning.

Yeah, like Adaro, I (we, Melani?) give the stealthy characters a bit of space and follow behind. No good having stealthy characters if they have a Dwarf in Full plate stomping along beside them :)

"Do you want me to check for magic around this entrance?" asks Melani.

"T'would be a shame to light our way with your pain and suffering."

"Go ahead Sunshine. Do your hocus pocus." I say and stand to the side so that she can have a clear shot at the door.

I'm assuming Detect Magic?

Melani concentrates, and while the door itself doesn't seem to radiate magic, there is definitely multiple sources of magic behind the door, but within range of her spell.

Melani warns the group of the magic ahead and tries to get a bit more information by concentrating.

Spellcraft roll 5+...

She shakes her head and smiles at Xer, "hocus pocus done. Time to show me your moves, gentlemen."

Melani grabs her shield and mentally prepares for danger.

"By the way, the door isn't magical but it may be .... I am sure you know this."

Rauno follows along cautiously behind Shariv, mirroring Xer's preparedness. After Melani checks out the door with her arcane sight, Rauno says quietly to Shariv, "Let me take a look..." He then inspects the door and area around it carefully.

You don't detect any traps on the door.

Male Elf Wizard 1 (0 xp)

Stepping away from the door, he nods to Shariv, "Looks clean." He then resumes his flanking position behind Shariv.

Rauno stands to whichever side of Shariv would afford him a view into the room when the door opens.

Male Human (Rhennee) Human Paragon 3 / Fighter 2 / Master Thrower 1

Shariv stands at ready, spikes drawn, then slowly opens the door.

At first glance
The air in this room is thick and cloying, carrying upon it the heavy and offensive smell of rotting flesh, sickly sweet flowers, exotic smoke and reptilian musk. Shadows and smoke coil in the corners of the room, and the floor is smeared with dirt and patches of pallid mold.

To either side of the room's central dais, stone carvings of demonic visages yawn, their open maws revealing two different and hostile terrains.

There is another door along the eastern wall.

If you look at the north and/or south demonic carvings more closely:

Spoiler:

The opening to the north shows a verdant jungle of fungus that serves as a battleground between enormous insects and gargantuan reptiles, while the southern maw shows the same landscape with the jungle burnt away, leaving nothing but skeletal fungoid trees and an ash-charred landscape.

I'll update the map as well

"When you are ready I shall continue my magical sweep now that the room is open. Mayhap everyone should be ready for a dark defence."

Melani waits for the frontline to move in or let her try from their backs. If a fight doesn't kick off straight away then she will concentrate on the magic and try to divine its positions.

I stay at the door, ready to fire on anything that should emerge into the room. "What are those things?"

Melani concentrates hard on the room and its fittings.

She tries to pinpoint the magic, even if she cannot guess the school involved.

Male Dwarf Barbarian 2 / Fighter 4 / Exotic Weapon Master 1

"OK, so who's taking point?" Looking around at everyoe in the party wearing light (or no) armour, and taking up a position in the doorway, "Well, I supposse it's me. Melani, give me the word when you have finished your sweep of the room, and we'll head in."

Aside from the magic emanating from the two demonic visages (conjuration), there appears to be sources of magic (conjuration and transmutation) in the two corners of the room along the north wall.

I won't be able to post for the next few hours, as I'm going to a hockey game. I'll be back and posting around 1030 PST

Hey, not to interrupt, but I just ran across this thread, and it's really, really cool. I've never watched someone else run a group through one of my adventures before, and it's seriously addictive... you're killing my productivity, here!

Anyhow, just wanted to say thank you, and there's more information coming on Kaer Maga in Pathfinder 3 if you need it. :)

Play on!

James, want to put in a good word for me in the Open Call?

I promise I'll mix more Sci-Fi stuff into my query ;-)

Melani turns to her protectors and tells all she learns of the room's magic.

Then she retires to relative safety several steps from the entrance.

Can I get a marching order for when you guys head into the room. So far it looks like Berekiah in the front, followed by ???

Male Human (Rhennee) Human Paragon 3 / Fighter 2 / Master Thrower 1

"Fine," replies Shariv. He seems a bit put off, but follows Berekiah closely.

Melani waits the others to enter and then she occupies the doorway.

I'm behind Shariv. My posting should return to normal in a few days.

Male Elf Wizard 1 (0 xp)

With Melani bringing up the rear, Rauno follows Xer into the room.

Ok, I've got the party order as: Berekiah, Shariv, Xer, Rauno, Melani & then Adaro. I'm assumng Adaro would be in the back with the other spellcaster.

As Berekiah walks into the room towards the door at the eastern end of the room, the others follow him. Berekiah, Shariv and Xer are in the room First 3 squares immediately to the east of the doorway, while Rauno is just in the doorway itself. Melani and Adara are still in the corridor.

Xer looks arounds as movement catches the corner of his eye in the smoky NW corner of the room, in an area that had been out of line of sight from the doorway. At the same time, Berekiah hears the scrabble of claws on marble.

"Beware!" Berekiah calls as he unlimbers his spiked chain.

From the NW corner of the room appears a charging scarlet raptor, devilish claws reaching forward to eviserate you. On the back of the raptor rides a winged goblin wielding a lance.

A similiar raptor/goblin pair also charges from the SW corner of the room towards the party.

Could the first person to post roll initiative for the whole party please?

*That should save us a day of posting back and forth to get the initiative order figured out. Melani +1, Xer +4, Shariv +5, Rauno +11, Berekiah +2, Adaro +4

Initiative rolled by my 9 month old son. I am sure he would apologise to Rauno if he could.

Shariv 18+5=23
Adaro 15+4=19
Melani 17+1=18
Xer 13+4=17
Rauno 3+11=14
Berekiah 12+2=14

Melani Starsmite wrote:

Shariv 18+5=23
Adaro 15+4=19
Melani 17+1=18
Xer 13+4=17
Rauno 3+11=14
Berekiah 12+2=14

Thanks. I'll interject the monsters:

Shariv 18+5=23
NW Raptor = 21
Adaro 15+4=19
SW Goblin Lancer = 19 (Adaro won the tiebreak)
NW Gobin Lancer = 18 (He won the tiebreak)
Melani 17+1=18
Xer 13+4=17
Rauno 3+11=14
Berekiah 12+2=14
SW Raptor = 13

Shariv's turn. The NW raptor/lancer duo is in the corner, ~15 away. The SW duo are in the other corner, ~30' away.

Male Human (Rhennee) Human Paragon 3 / Fighter 2 / Master Thrower 1

"What the F&++?!" shouts Shariv as the dinosaur-riding goblin things charge the group.

He flicks his hands, and a throwing spike appears in the throat of each of the goblin creatures. Another quick flick, and a wicked-looking straight razor appears in his left hand.

Uses Doubletoss ability, attack roll 1: 13 + 10 = 23, damage: 8; attack roll 2: 12 + 10 = 22, damage: 8.

The two goblin riders clutch their wounds after Shariv's Throwing Spike barrage, but they still cling to their mounts.

The NW Raptor charges and launches itself through the air at Berekiah. The raking rear talons and bite scrabble against Berekiah's dwarven-crafted armor, but the forearm claws lash out and score wounds against weak points in Berekiah's defence.

Berekiah takes 28 pts of damage

Adaro's turn

Nah, that's okay...still going before one of the raptors so that'll give him the flat-footed state needed to lay down some sneak attack smack!

On the flipside, if Berekiah had "won" initiative, those raptors would have been eating a couple of spiked chain trip AoOs on the way in too.

This should be a tough fight, probably the toughest on this floor IMHO, but you guys just lucked into hitting it first. At least you haven't expended any resources yet ;-)

Male Halfling Wizard 7th

He will delay as there are a bunch of big folk in the way. "Get in there."

Both goblin lancers will lower their lances, and pull wands from their belts as their saurian mounts charge into battle. (Neither has a shield, I'll post a pic up on the website right after I finish this post.)

One targets Xer, while the other targets Rauno.

Can you both make DC 13 Fortitude Saves please.

Whew!

Fort save (1d20+7=13)

Ouch. Xer is now blinded. You know, everytime someone gets blinded in DnD, I think of those "black ink goggles" from Final Fantasy ;-)

Melani is now up. Maybe she has some restorative magic that could help?

I fall to the floor, clutching at my face. I can't see anything, just utter blackness and my eyes burn. "I can't see!" I shout. "Stay calm. This kind of thing has happened before." I think "Damn it! Someone help me!"

Xer doesn't get to act yet. So cannot fall prone before the baddies.

Melani steps closer to the man and taps him lightly on the bottom. She whispers in his ear,

"Let there be light when all around is darkness."

You have another saving throw Xer. Melani cast resurgence. Good luck.

I may post a little out of sequence because sometimes I'm unsure when I'll be able to post again. I just post what'll I'll do on my turn. Thanks Melani. Fort save 10 DAMMIT!
I try once again to fight off the blinding pain but it remains.

Rauno's turn. I completely understand Xer, shame about the Fort Save.

Melani shouts, "Get the wands or the goblins. They will kill us with their magic."

Male Elf Wizard 1 (0 xp)

Rauno is already firing as Melani shouts, shifting his first shot slightly. His arrow flies toward the wand-wielding goblin that fired at him, aimed in truth not at the goblin, but at his hand...

Two more arrows fly lightning-fast toward the last raptor that hadn't yet acted, the archer instinctively taking advantage of the creature's slower reaction time.

Rapid Shot, with first shot used for a Ranged Disarm attempt vs. the goblin (opposing Attack roll of 20). Last two shots go at the flat-footed raptor (Attack rolls 30 and 26, damage 17 and 15).

Attack roll, attack damage, sneak attack damage (1d20+12=20, 1d20+12=30, 1d8+5=7, 2d6=10, 1d20+12=26, 1d8+5=8, 2d6=7)

Nice shooting!

The ivory and obsidian wand flies out of the astonished goblin's hand, and a heartbeat later two more arrows bury themselves to the fletching in the chest of the raptor.

Berekiah's turn, unless Adaro wants to take his delayed action

"Come on Berekiah, show us what you are made of!" cheers Melani.

Male Dwarf Barbarian 2 / Fighter 4 / Exotic Weapon Master 1

Berekiah swings his chain at the mounted goblin, attempting to pull him from his "stead."*

Touch Attack (1d20+11=19)
Trip Attempt (1d20+8=11) That is probabaly not good enough

He will try again,
Touch Attack (1d20+11=23)
Trip Attempt (1d20+8=18)
If that succeeds:
Follow Up Attack (1d20+11=26)
Damage (2d4+7=12) + 1 Acid

Regardless of the success of his first two trip attempts, his third will simply try to pulverise the Goblin (Wherever he is)
Attack Roll (1d20+6=20)
Damage (2d4+7=13) + 1 Acid

*They can make a ride check to negate the trip attempt.

EDIT: Again, Berekiah will attempt to trip with any AoOs he might get. I'll leave you to roll them to speed things up.

Berekiah's whirling chain snares the goblin lancer and pulls him off the raptor mount. A quick pair of strikes with the spiked head of the chain leaves the goblin battered and unmoving on the ground.

The southern raptor starts to charge the party, then veers to the left to attack the archer who hurt it.

Rauno, standing in the doorway to the room, tries to avoid the ferocious assault, and partially succeeds. A single claw slash and a wicked bite take chunks (26 HP) out of Rauno, but he successfully avoids the disemboweling talon strike of the leaping raptor.

Thats it for the round, unless Adaro wants to take his delayed action

To recap:

Adaro is still in the hallway outside the room, albeit with a delayed action

Rauno is in the door, with the southern raptor trying to eat him.

Xer is in the square immediately to the East of the door, but the raptor ignored him as he is blinded.

Melani stands beside Xer. (Either to the north or south, I wasn't sure. Either way, the Raptor was going after the archer who put a pair of arrows into it, so it didn't matter too much in the first round)

Shariv stands to the east of Melani and Xer.

Berekiah is the furthest into the room, immediately to the east of Shariv. He has the northern raptor trying to eat him as well.

The goblin lancer on the northern raptor was hauled off (tripped) and killed by Berekiah after Shariv hit it with a throwing spike.

The goblin lancer on the southern raptor still has a surprised look on its face after Rauno took a perfectly aimed shot and knocked the wand out of its hand. It also was hit by a throwing spike from Shariv.

And now its Shariv's turn as we start the next round
