Skull & Shackles bring more Pawns for the Addicted GM!

5/5

I have a problem. I love pawns and feel the need to buy every single pawn set as it is released, regardless of whether or not I am going to play the adventure path. In the case of Skull & Shackles, I doubt that I will ever play the adventure path, but that didn't stop me from buying the pawn set. This is the set to get when you want to stock up on pirate NPCS and all of the creatures of the sea that your party might encounter.

This is probably the most perfectly made set of pawns out of all that Paizo offers at present. The art is gorgeous and up to the regular Paizo standards, but the ink is not as dark as on some of the pawn sets. This is a common complaint that doesn't bother me, but others seem to harp on about it.

The pawns themselves are all pre-cut from the cardboard and will literally fall out of the sheet once you start looking through them. There will be no problems removing them and none of that annoying cardboard tear that comes from improperly cut pawns. All of the pawns are aligned properly on the sheets and even the characters with the guns have actual guns on the pawn instead of truncated, sawed-off handles.

As stated above, this is Paizo's most perfectly made set to date. If you're addicted to pawns like me, then buy with confidence. If you need your pirate fix, then this is the set for you!

More Pawns (and npc´s)

4/5

I love this pawns, i admit it!!

Theres a 171 paws in total, and is filled with a lot of NPC´s (i don´t have this AP, as the RotRL, but i have boths expansions and are a lot of usefull at my table).

My players take one npc pawn to represent his/her character and thats when the magic comes!!

absolute a must have at your table (unles you have minis and even so, you can mix ´em up)

Proud of this purchase

4/5

My concern with the tokens was that they would be too flimsy. I remembered back into the paper-fold characters that WOTC used to publish back in the day and I think Paizo did for a while. I was surprised at the sturdiness of this token line. The Beastiary set is on the way.

This AP is very NPC heavy and I would have gladly paid more for a full set of NPCs. That is the only reason for the 4 out of 5 instead of giving it a 5.

The fact that these can be pub back in the sleeves and stored more economically than paper fold-ups is also a big plus. I much prefer these over mini's for both storage and cost.

A nice addition!

4/5

This set has a bunch of nautical and pirate-themed critters. They are in the same high quality cardboard format as the bestiary box, and are meant to supplement it. I do not have the Skulls & Shackles Adventure Path, but I think these are useful miniatures nonetheless. There are a few repeats from the bestiary box, but I'm OK with that as they tend to be things you'll need more of. Most of the monsters are unique to this set and quite interesting. There is a robust array of pirates. As usual, the "medium-sized" pawns tower above medium-sized miniatures, so using a mix of the two can be awkward, but this is a great set for a great price.

You will need to buy new stands or use the ones in the bestiary box, as this set does not come with any. Also, keep the pawns in their cardboard sheets and keep the cardboard cover and you should be able to store this on your shelf much like a hardcover book.

Good set

4/5

Great set, with good pictures of characters that are missing pictures such as Milksop and that mustache-dude from the Lady's rock. BUT it is missing some vital characters, susch as the norgerber clerics and Brinebrood queen, so no 5 stars.

Is there a chance that we'll get a list of what pawns are in here like the other packs? :)

I would suspect the answer is "yes," though not until we're closer to a release date.

Dark Archive

Yes, I would subscribe for pawns of any sort especially if they covered the APs.

Silver Crusade

You guys just need to do what I do with my APs (unintentionally). Spend 18 months running one AP and then you get all the reviews, advice, and accessories the first suckers, I mean brave souls didn't have on day 1 on "your" first day. :P

Just another vote for Kingmaker pawn collection. That and Second Darkness. My two favorite AP's, would be nice to have pawns for those ... or minis sets.

I agree with the general sentiment that these should be released in packs alongside the AP it accompanies instead of at the very end of it. That way, people who plan on running the AP as it comes out can enjoy these as well! I know I'd pay a bit extra each month to have these thrown in with my sub.

I would rather pay a low price and get my pawns all together at the end of the AP.

I much prefer for them to come out towards the end of the AP. That way if I dont plan on running the AP i might not purchase the pawns, unless of course the pawns are broad enough from a particular AP that they can be used in many others. Not really interested in a pirate AP, so prolly wont get this set, but if Paizo surprises me and i wind up liking this AP i will purchase the pawns.

I'll definitely be getting these, and any others in the pawns line. With 2 small children I don't have the money, time or space to buy, paint and store figures.

Just one question, and perhaps a suggestion: How deep is the box that the pawns come in? I'd love to have an AP box that could hold all the 6 AP issues in a series, campaign setting, players guide, flip mat, map cards, bestiary, player companion, pawns and possibly even the GameMastery cards, so I could keep everything neatly organised in one place.

I guess selling an empty box isn't something Paizo is likely to do (although I'd buy one), but selling an oversized box with the pawns could work if it didn't impact on the price (or postage) too much, as most people buying the pawns would have already invested in the AP and some accessories.

This pretty much just assured that Skull & Shackles will be the first Adventure Path that I pick up. Thank you.

Love the pawns!

IIRC, there is no box; it's just the pawn sheets shrink-wrapped.

EDIT: Erik Mona from here on the RotRL pawns:

Erik Mona wrote:

Adding bases would force us to put it into a box, and would probably raise the price by at least a couple of dollars.

Ah! Ok, it looked like a box in the mock up.
Now I'll have to start a petition for Paizo to sell AP empty boxes...

Sovereign Court

We do sell an empty box, but it won't hold everything you want for an AP. It's just a bit too small for the AP books or the full pawn sheets, but it could still hold map packs, flip-mats, item cards, and punched out pawns for the AP.

I picked one of those up to hold my flip-mats - something labelled "Treasure Chest" was hard to resist for a pirate ship!

For most of my Pathfinder odds-and-ends I have a roll-around case that's large enough to take rulebooks, etc. spine-up, and still leave a lot of space for other things (character sheets in report holders, assorted really useful boxes, and several of the other Vaultz products). It's handy at a convention or similar PFS event when you might need to be able to produce a rulebook or supplement should your character be audited - that's one time when the PFSRD on a tablet isn't sufficient. A PDF would be, but I don't have everything in electronic form (yet ...), as the tablet is a recent accquisition. (It fits into the roll-around case as well).

I had a sister-in-law who would make some pretty nice custom boxes but when she first started out doing the process she would just use 5-pieces of (very) heavy cardstock that were duct taped together.

Cut the base to the size you want and then the four sides to the desired height. The four side pieces get taped together in a row (front and back) and then formed into the rectangle (finally taping the last two pieces together). From there the bottom ... blah blah blah ... you all see where this is going.

Repeat for the top ... slightly bigger and the sides only have to be an inch or so in height.

Plus to this, you'd be able to apply images to the cardstock from the adventure path. (Annnnnnnd, I've just decided to do this for the homebrew I'm running! Currently using the Beginner Box and I've outgrown that.)

Just want to say that this is brilliant product synergy and for myself the pawn set actually sells me the AP. Great work guys.

I would have loved to buy this product, but it will be to late. My round starts this Saturday.

So I ended up buying Pathfinder Paper Minis—Skull & Shackles Adventure Path Part 1: "The Wormwood Mutiny" PDF. It is from the 3rd party publisher Crystal Clear Design.
The PDF had some errors at first, but the author did a lot of work to remove these quickly and seems very responsive in the comments section. I think the art is not the best I've seen but quite nice for miniatures.

It would probably be better if Paizo would also release its pawn collection at a "one collection per AP volume" rate with maybe a subscription or a package including all pawn collections of an AP.

So I will probably stay with the miniatures from Crystal Clear Design, to keep a single style for the AP.

To be clear there, Pathfinder Paper Minis is an officially licensed product line, so not really a 3rd party.

How will these Pawn sets differ from the Paper Minis? I am getting a tad confused between the two.

The Paper Minis are PDFs that you print out and assemble yourself, and has art done by one of our licensees. It contains all of the art necessary to run the adventure (including multiples of them in many instances).

The Pawns are physical products, with official art from the Adventure Path, and is printed on cardstock that is pre-cut and uses the bases from the Beginner Box.

Does the omission of the bolded phrase from your overview of the pawns imply that there would be some gaps if one were to run the AP? Any idea as to roughly what proportion is going to be missing? Is it the case that those 'omitted' pawns will be those standard creatures which are available in the other more generic pawn sets?

Also, any word on when you'll be removing the phrase "...is not part of any subscription" from the product description?

I'm not 100% sure if the Pawns contain everything needed for the adventures, but I'm going to poke the folks that know more about the Pawns that I do to give you some more details.

Off the top of my head, the RotR plastic minis include a Denizen of Leng, and the pawns do not. I know, different AP; however, I suspect that the economic constraints of physical products mean that you will always have to choose which things to make -- even if you already have the art. So, that would be the flip side of self-assembly from a PDF.

I'm not sure if Erik has finalized the list yet, but our goal will be to get to you really close.

You are not likely to see really minor NPCs, especially if they don't even have an illustration, and things that are unlikely to be involved in combat will also probably not get a token. Tokens also run only from Small to Huge. Finally, we do sometimes have to make some tradeoffs when filling out the sheets.

And yes, the set is designed for use in conjunction with the Bestiary Box, so we won't generally be repeating stuff from that set unless there's a really good reason. (Two possible good reasons: if there's one copy of a pawn in the Bestiary Box, but you encounter a lot of them simultaneously here, we might need to give you more. Or if there's something unique about the look of a particular monster that makes it distinct enough from the Bestiary Box version, we might provide it here.)

I'd suggest looking at the Rise of the Runelords set to see the mix it provides... this set will be similar.

Don't worry—I'm sure you'll hear about it!

Thanks Vic.
The first bit sounds very reasonable. The second is encouraging!

I am taking the lack of official comment regarding making pawn sets for old APs besides RotRL to mean they are still in deliberations or are waiting to announce something unexpected (like a similar anniversary treatment for CotCT). It has already been said by many but I want to also state that I would buy any pawn set that comes out, quadruple especially one for Carrion Crown.

Instead of making us buy the PF Bestiary Box, would the actual bases be on sale separately?

Cojonuda wrote:

We will probably have additional bases available for sale... but keep in mind that these AP sets assume you have the bases *and the tokens* from that set, and so don't generally reprint monsters from the Bestiary Box (unless you need a lot more of them, or they're specifically very different). If you skip the Bestiary Box, you'll be missing tokens for some common monsters that appear in this AP.

I wanted this, but I received the first and second adventures in this path last month and will be running my first game on the 10th of June. I will not be buying it because the release date is too late. These should have been released at the same time as the first adventure.

It would be nice if they would sell AP kits with map, NPC/monster minis, as well as NPC portraits.

donato wrote:
Any thought about an AP accesory subscription? You could group the pawns, map folios, and maybe specific flip-mats or a new accessory for the line. You can do it bi-monthly with the flip-mat conciding with part 2 of the AP, the map folio with part 4, and the pawns with part 6. Seems like it would work well enough, but I don't know how it would affect work flow. Just a thought.

The last adventure is not finished when the first one is sent to the printer. This makes producing a whole set in time for the first AP impossible.

If the sets were produced and released piecemeal it would be prohibitively expensive.

That's the gist of what Paizo have said so far about this.

Just wanted to chime in here, I love the idea for this product. I am committed to picking up every pawn box you put out, even if it is for an AP that I never plan to play. You can never have too many pawns in my opinion. I'm planning on picking up at least 2 bestiary boxes when they come out.

Can you please make one of these boxes for Kingmaker? We are all having our doubts as to whether the paper minis will ever be finished. We know they are trying their best but they aren't really delivering...

+1

I know this has come up in other product discussion and that many things make it impractical, but.......Please....pretty please? It would be so nice. What if you held a future AP back until complete so there is time for product support items then release all at once. Could be bundled or purchased separately.

I know that if an AP I was interested in came out and already had all 6 volumes, maps, minis, item cards, npc portraits, etc and I could get it all in just one click, I would jump on it. The amount of prep time it would save me would be worth the cost. Not to mention escaping the disappointment of seeing awesome product support be released for a product I was DONE with months ago.

Just pre-ordered all the pawn boxes (Bestiary, RotRL, Shackles and NPC) as well as the beginners box from Amazon UK due to shipping costs to germany.

Just want to say that this is great. A lot cheaper than plastic minis, but better than the paper minis.

Any chance of submitting the serial number or some sort of proof of purchase and getting the PDFs somewhat cheaper?

Something for this collection in particular - although its probably too late for consideration - How about Ship pawns at the naval combat scale???

Now that the Adventure Path has been completed and almost all of the paper miniature sets are available, has it been clarified what percentage of NPC/creatures are available in the paper minis versus the pawns?

Any word on the contents yet I would like to see a breakdown as the rune lords swt

If you're OC about your roleplaying gear, I highly recommend a zipper binder instead of a box. I have all of my pawns in 3-hole transparent card sleeves in alphabetical order. The ones that slide in horizontally are best for size medium and large, while my smalls are in a divided zip organizer that is also 3-hole punched. Huge's are a little more challenging; they fit into sleeves with 2 top facing pockets, but are a little more of a challenge to keep flat. I keep all of my bases in a plastic bag that slides into a pocket on the inside of the binder's front cover. There's no reason you couldn't keep your sets separate by AR and contain the 6 AR books as well (put in something to protect the spines from the rings, though). I use a 3 inch binder for the RotL, Bestiary, and Beginner box sets, but you could probably use a smaller binder for AR division. It's not as cheap as a box for sure, but it makes it far easier to find what you're looking for after you've punched out your pawns.

96. Lightning Elemental
97. Sapphire Jellyfish
98. Shark, Great Hammerhead
99. Shark-Eating Crab (2)
100. Shrouded Queen
101. Spiny Eurypterid
102. Treant (2)
103. Triceratops (2)

Do note, There is no Sea Cat in the package, despite what the pre-production photo above shows. The monster was included in the bestiary for #56, but did not appear in any of the AP proper, which is why I would wager it was not included.

Is this intentional?

Spoilered name for safety.

Spoiler:
number 57: Ormandar

My pdf has the picture, so hopefully if you download again you'll have the artwork.
