Print version is glorious, PDF version not so much

4/5

I own both the print version of the folio and recently got the PDF version in the Humble Bundle.

The printed version is fantastic, but be sure that you have the right expectations! This is not your super-efficient condensed sheet to have ready in a fast-paced action-packed game.

This booklet, in time, will become the chronicle of your PC. It will record their successes and failures and accompany them throughout their entire adventuring career until it is time to retire. Years later, you will pull the Folio from your gaming shelf, browse through the pages and smile at the memories of an amazing campaign its contents conjure.

So yes, some of the mechanical information is a bit all over the place. But the Folio more than makes up for it with all the little details that are usually cut for space.

If you like details, keeping statistics, and being thorough, this Folio is the best you can get for your character in print. Five stars!

The PDF version, however, is a different beast. Maybe I am using the wrong (Acrobat) reader or it's some sort of security thing but for whatever reason you cannot fill out any boxes of the PDF. So all the PDF is really good for is printing copies of it. If you do that, however, you miss out on the production values of the print edition and if you take those away, I think there are better options out there. This brings the rating of the PDF down to three stars.

So because we have to give both versions a single rating, I give it the average of both: 4 stars.

Couple of quirks...

2/5

I typically refuse to write out Pathfinder character sheets because there is too much hidden math to keep track of during character creation and leveling up. The folio is a huge improvement towards making a character easy to edit as well as read. At the price, I hesitate to buy a folio for every character, but there are definitely niches where having a folio is very useful.

However, I did bump into a couple of significant (imo) quirks:

* The pouches aren't quite big enough to hold 8.5"x11" paper. Probably need to take 1/8" off the left and right sides in order to get them to fit. Unless you have a paper cutter, good luck keeping a log of what's happened.

* The "Spellbook" page barely holds enough spells for a stock sorcerer with no bonus spells. If the pouches were actually big enough, I'd just create more spellbook pages and stuff them in the pouch.

* I did not feel like I could really use either of the Animal Companion or Familiar/Follower/Mount sections for logging a sorcerer's familiar.

EDIT: I docked a star because these quirks are really getting to me. Fun fact, a custom-printed cover for this would be $30 from Kinko's.

great Player Character folio for a long in-depth played frequently character

5/5

his is a great Player Character folio for a long in depth played frequently character. And since you can make copies for your other PC's it's not so bad price wise either.

Yes of course the basic Character sheets can be found and downloaded easily. But these will help you put more roleplaying depth into your character.

And as a side bonus, by having it you can get one free re-roll in a Pathfinder Society game, per night.

absurd waste of money

1/5

An absurd waste of money with very little value for multiple characters. Only good if you want the reroll in PFS play. Ps this should not give you a reroll in pfs play. Should have more than one use.

Overly Complicated and PDF = No Reroll PFS

1/5

This is character sheet stretched over 14 pages. It seems they just padded a free resource with enough superfluous pages to justify selling it.

The electronic copy with your name and paizo's mark on it doesn't qualify for a PFS reroll. Their reasoning being that they believe the colorful, shiny cover is what makes people buy the product. I've never met anyone who has actually used this as intended.

I hope it's not made of the same glossy paper as regular Paizo products, because I doubt you can safely use an eraser with them.

The price is really out there, $10 for a character sheet? Free RPG Day products have the same page count and a much more reasonable price.

I'd buy stale vomit if it was wrapped up in Wayne Reynolds' art.

Just for clarity's sake, Hero Lab is not subscription-based.

I love the hero lab character generator for pathfinder rpg. I cannot seem to get the lore warden class however.

Lore Warden is an archetype out of the Pathfinder Society Field Guide. As it's not core, it's not included in the base Hero Lab package; you'd have to purchase the additional data set that includes the contents of that book. According to this, that would be the Campaign Setting Package #6 for $4.99.

Not me. They're ten bucks a pop, and I change characters a LOT. I'll probably end up photocopying or printing a PDF.
I think you're already aware that you rarely fit the "most people" category. :-)

When you say "most people," I assume that you mean "most people who purchase this product will probably buy one for each of their characters." I can personally say that $10 for a character sheet is far too much for me to bat an eye at, no matter how fancy it is.

The $5 price tag we put on Free RPG Day products (after Free RPG Day, of course) is subsidized by a marketing budget. That is to say, they generally have a *goal* of just breaking even (more or less).

Also, even though they're both 16-page books, the Character Folio does have a higher manufacturing cost because of the pockets and gatefold cover.

I didn't say most people *will* buy one for each character.... I said most will *want to*. :-)

True. I'll buy one for my favorite character (if we ever finish that campaign), level him up to 20th lvl, write up a story about how he ended his days, put it all in the folio so that it will be a nicely wrapped memory.

I foresee a lot of people quiting their RPG subscription, buying the PDF, and then restarting the subscription again for Ultimate Equipment.

Even moreso, I see the PDF doing very good sales, while the print version...doesn't.

Probably a cool sheet, but $10 a pop? No thanks.

Even if I didn't want the hardcopy, and I do actually want the hardcopy, I still don't think I'd quit the subscription and buy the PDF. I have to figure the PDF is going to cost at least $6 and I get that included in the $10 subscription price so quiting to buy the PDF doesn't make sense to me. It does seem high for a character sheet, but it's a bit more than just a character sheet so I'm up for the one-time investment. I expect the folio cover itself with pockets would range in the $2 to $3 range if I were just going out and buying it as a stand-alone office/school-supply item. (That's with designer artwork pricing. A plain one would probably cost $1.)

Shadow Lodge

Eh, decent point. Still, among non-subscribers, I don't see many buying the print version.

If I didn't quit my subscription for the beginner box I certainly would not quit it for this.

I think that this sheet should come with at least two free hero points from the APG, because at that pricetag, it's going to really hurt to have the character in this thing die . . . ;)

This is a lot like the old AD&D Permanent Character Record Sheet, I think. Those were cool, and given inflation, actually significantly more expensive than these are.

Now, since I'm typically a GM, this has little use for me, but as a player, I'm all for it. In fact, this might make a nice gift for the players in my epic group ...

This looks like a great permanent record to have. I will take 1 or 4. lol

While I use HeroLab for most of my character needs, I would be tempted to snag one for my regular character :)

Those were great sheets. I still have several unused copies and several used copies. They were hard to get when they were released. I tried several times to get them from the Mail Order Hobby Shop (TSR) and they were always out of stock even when first released. I did find a few in stores through the years though. I didn't think anyone here even remembered this item.

Scarab Sages

I'd buy it for my home campaigns. I used a character folio for WFRP and it was extremely useful.

Liberty's Edge

We've been waiting for something like this from Paizo. Sounds super!

I'll probably buy one. Try it out. If I like it I will buy one for every character who gets over 3rd level(which is a alot). But I have always loved these character folios.

Hmm.. what would make the physical version even better would be if the magic item slot page were a full sheet... actually, two sheets set up with pockets to hold a magic item card from the Item Cards line in each body slot. The reverse could be a similar setup with slots for the Condition cards and forthcoming Buff cards.

Just a thought.

I am very excited about this. I have been waiting for something like this from Paizo for some time. I will be buying many of them this year.

While I've done that before, I'm okay to take the first one at full price and in all its pocketed glory, and then print after that.

Well, at THAT price, I'm absolutely going to get the PDF!

Any chance of seeing a sample page or two?

Not quite yet—it's just going to the printer this week, I think—but eventually!

While I really love the idea of a fancy extensive sheet in a sturdy binding and so on the biggest downside I see in this is that it's a one-sheet-fits-all approach (at least that's how I read the description).

PFRPG offers so much in customization of every single class that it's near impossible to squeeze all of the classes into the same sheet layout. It's bound to be too little space for one aspect and a lot of empty space in other places. I think the WOCT Deluxe Character sheets and what Happy Camper did is a much superior concept.

Alas, looking forward to it, would love to be proven wrong.

While I love the Happy Camper sheets (*****) my one complaint about them is that unless you're proficient with writing your name on a grain of rice, the squares for writing in your magic items is too small.
I've sent them emails on this but to no avail. AS it is, and until I learn how to use the PDFeditor, it is just wasted space as far as I'm concerned. My friends and I will have to keep using the old WoTC magic item sheet until that time.

I didn't want to imply that HC sheets are the ultimate gold-standard, I just think the idea behind them (one sheet tailored for each class) seems much better IMHO.

I wish this were coming in May. While I see limited use for the hardcopy (maybe I'll see more for it once I get it), the PDF is much anticipated.

Fillable PDF - even better: saveable fillable PDF

Having built a 4 page deluxe sheet with this... I can tell you that a 16 page folio would drive the developers INSANE. I'm seriously considering moving my products to some sort of multi-platform app with printing ability instead of fillable pdfs... but I'm not that good a programmer.

Also, I'll let this one hit my subscription. I'd been considering a folder-stapled idea for one of my later products, 10 bucks and not messing with my subscription is totally worth seeing how it would actually behave.

The classic four classes, nice.

What are they thinking? You never put the wizard in the back of the marching order.

Dark Archive

Any chance the PDF will be layered to include the variant rules options from Ultimate Combat (i.e. wounds/vigor)? I'm using several of them in my next campaign and cannot find one PF character sheet with any of the UC options on there...

I love the new cover!

Well, seeing as how this will just put my subscriptions for that month over the $100 mark and therefore save me $10 on shipping, sounds alright but, I'm a GM not a player (as much as I want to be a player) so I'm not 100% happy about something like this being part of the core rules subscriptions. Not sure where ELSE it would fit though, so that's another reason I can accept it's placement. Though I also hope the PDF can be form fillable since that's more than likely the only way I will get much use out of it as a GM.

Shadow Lodge

Agreed. A form-fillable AND SAVEABLE PDF would be useful. Anything less....meh. Might become the first Pathfinder RPG product I don't even consider.

Will this be made from that hard card and shiny surface so I can use dry erase markers on it? Or will I have to pull it apart and laminate it myself?

Contributor

The Player Character Folio is not laminated.

Grand Lodge

I'm really looking forward to this. I've found electronic means of tracking and updating characters lacking, and the basic character sheet is too limited once you get past a few levels. I'd love to see some previews.

Dark Archive

I've been a subscriber to the rules line since it began and I'm not yet ready to suspend my sub just to avoid a product ... but after the Beginner Box and this, I'm getting very close.

I'd prefer that the subscription line stayed focus on rulebooks, with limited-interest accessories left as optional purchases. With the overall increase in product Paizo is releasing, my monthly gaming outlay is reaching its limit, leaving less and less room for fluff products like this.

I realize making products like this (which I'd hazard would be of dubious viability as a standalone) part of a subscription may make business sense; it also may cost you subscribers in the long run. Hope that's useful feedback!

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

In case you haven't seen, we've posted some previews of the interior on the blog.

I will be getting it, cause I use a folder now. This is a much nicer folder, plus I am subscribing anyways. I doubt I would buy anymore than the first one, just print out copies to use of the sheet and use the single folder. But I do like what little I can see of the folder and sheet.

Liberty's Edge

I did order a few of these for my players. I may renege on that and keep them all to myself.
