Back The Dragon's Demand CRPG

Tuesday, September 24, 2024

Deep within the ancient Verduran Forest of Taldor, in a treacherous swampland known as the Dragonfen, there is a tale about the Dragon Tyrant Aeteperax, slain a thousand years ago by a band of heroic warriors. But victory doesn’t last forever, and enemies eventually rise again, calling forth new heroes to embark upon a perilous quest to save a town and defeat he who would once more call himself the Dragon Tyrant.

Pathfinder The Dragon's Demand: Just Launched on Kickstarter

Hail and well-met Pathfinders! I’m Alan Miranda, CEO of Ossian Studios, and I am excited to introduce you to our new Paizo-licensed RPG video game, Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand. Over a year in the making, it’s a single-player, turn-based game that features deep character customization, a faithful adaptation of the remastered Pathfinder Second Edition Core rules, and an enhanced tabletop minis-style play. It's all about miniatures in a tabletop-style world—the world of Pathfinder!

Playing tabletop many years ago made a huge impact on me. It was the most exciting time I’d ever had with a game, like a fantasy book coming alive from my own choices and dice rolls. It felt magical. It’s those memories that inspired me to work at BioWare as a producer on the Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights games. And that’s when I realized I was always trying to recreate that same pen-and-paper magic in the RPGs I worked on.

So that’s what we’re doing with The Dragon’s Demand: going back to our tabletop roots to recreate that magic in a single-player, turn-based video game, with miniatures. It looks like a beautiful tabletop diorama but does all the things that aren’t possible to show on a physical tabletop, so it’s like an “enhanced tabletop.” And it uses a faithful adaptation of Pathfinder’s Second Edition rules for players to interact with the world in some very refreshing ways.

We’ve been building a prototype of this enhanced tabletop game for over a year. That includes nailing down the right art style on a solid technical framework, as well as integrating the remastered ruleset in an ongoing process.

So, what are some of the cool things you’ll see in The Dragon’s Demand? Well, when it comes to miniatures, we have adaptive poses based on actions, including grab poses, dynamic body postures for different inclines, but most importantly, a 3D grid system. Instead of grid squares, we’ll be using grid cubes, which give characters the incredible freedom of movement to climb ropes, walls, and trees, levitate, fly, swim deep underwater, and more.

And our environments will have dynamic weather that impacts the world, visual effects that obscure visibility, and a ton of skill-based environmental interactions like taking cover and sneaking, squeezing through really tight spots, throwing your own ropes to climb, and forcing open doors and windows with a crowbar.

The CRPG will be based on 2013’s Pathfinder adventure The Dragon's Demand, a Pathfinder First Edition dungeon and wilderness adventure for 1st level characters. Written by Mike Shel, it delves into the Dark Tapestry—the darkness between the stars where powerful entities and madness lurk. We’ll be expanding that adventure with new areas to explore, lots of intriguing side quests, and a brand new, personal story for player characters that delves into the darkness of the Dark Tapestry.

The return of a legendary dragon long vanquished sees the town of Belhaim once again under dire threat. The game will present a huge, interactive world to explore, with hundreds of characters and dozens of quests that react to the player’s choices. A cast of colorful companions, including iconic characters such as the goblin alchemist Fumbus, will be on hand to join the player’s party, each featuring their own motivations and backstory.

With over 30 hours of gameplay accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack and professional voice acting, gamers can look forward to a classic, single-player, party-based CRPG experience where they will be able to:

  • Create deep, custom character builds from a choice of 7 ancestries, 16 classes, and more than 30 backgrounds.
  • Play as a dwarf, elf, gnome, goblin, halfling, human, or an orc.
  • Choose their path as an alchemist, barbarian, bard, champion, cleric, druid, fighter, investigator, monk, oracle, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, swashbuckler, witch, or wizard.
  • Form a party of four with up to three companions, out of a possible dozen characters encountered during their adventures, to forge bonds of friendship and even romance!
  • Level up characters to level 8.
  • Wield a multitude of powerful spells from all four magical traditions: Arcane, Divine, Occult, and Primal.
  • Equip hundreds of unique armors and weapons and see them dynamically change on miniature characters.
  • Explore the region using an interactive world map to travel to many mysterious and dangerous locations across the Dragonfen, Verduran Forest, and the town of Belhaim.

Ossian Studios is an independent game developer who has made RPGs exclusively for twenty years, including Dungeons & Dragons story-driven RPGs. For The Dragon's Demand, Ossian brings our attention to detail together with the rules, lore, and deep character customization for which Pathfinder is known—and even offers a selection of digital dice to toss in the game.

Very cool! I love the art style and use of miniatures. I'm intrigued by the 3d grid as that is something that doesn't get a ton of real use at the table, or even playing on Foundry.

Just FYI, all prices are in Canadian Dollars. Right now that is about 75 US cents per 1 Canadian Dollar, so the $200CA pledge is about $150 US.

Pledged!

I read an article that said Ossian wants this game to be "Like Baldur's Gate 3, but Pathfinder, with miniatures.". In that case, considering I didn't care for Baldur's Gate 3, I guess I'll give it a pass.

Pledged for the digital deluxe edition. I guess the add-ons for in-game dice sets can only be done later? I found no option for it. Also, for some reason Kickstarter isn't detecting my address I just added, so no Aroden copper coin for me, meh.

Thank you, I'll check back tomorrow morning (it's evening already over here in Germany). Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, but if it's a problem with the Kickstarter set-up, I'd appreciate the chance to change my pledge to add add-ons and the copper coin before the early adopter bonus runs out after the first 24 hours. ;)

This games visuals reminds me of Moonbreaker. And that's good, because Moonbreaker is amazing.

All I ask is to please, PLEASE, let us go into a little menu in the character customization to paint our characters like they're real minis.

Let's. F*$%ing. GOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I'm also having this issue, but I don't want to miss the early bird special.

Noted. Thank you.

Is this PC only or will it be on consoles as well?

I think Solasta is a much better point of comparison judging by what we've seen so far. Having actual companion NPCs (as opposed to Solasta's fully customized party) seems to be the only thing pushing DD a bit closer to BG3.

The Kickstarter says it will be released on Steam, but I would expect if it is successful it will eventually port to consoles as well, similar to Wrath of the Righteous by Owlcat.

And I’m fairly certain I saw Beamdog’s Neverwinter Nights update on Xbox…yep, just checked. So eventually I’d guess it would make it.

Thanks for the Ossian Studios tag, Paizo. To clarify, I am assisting Ossian with the Kickstarter, Pathfinders. :)

I’ll likely back this just to play it in order come to grips with the ruleset a little more.

I do wish it were more like NWN with dynamic graphics - little miniatures sure remove the verisimilitude.

I know that all the info says that this will be a single-player game, but what's the chance that multiplayer gets added at some point? Even if it's just Hot Seat with only 2 PCs, that would be nice.

Just to confirm, I was able to get the digital deluxe edition with the copper coin and add add-ons, for which I got two dice sets and the gold coin. Thank you for looking into this!

As the Kickstarter page says, “Ultimately, we won't just be building a game — we'll be building a platform, one that we want to expand in the future with additional games as well as new features like multiplayer. And the best way to do that is to involve you, the passionate and knowledgeable community. Your enjoyment is paramount to us! But this long-term plan all starts with hitting our funding goal for Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand.”

Still not sure I like digital miniatures much, but I do kinda wonder if they keep showing a black dragon because they changed things or because they are trying to avoid spoilers despite that dragon's demand adventure cover has a green dragon xD

They may just be removing the OGLism of dragon color=dragon type.

THANK YOU for sharing our vision of a single-player, turn-based CRPG that takes role-playing back to its roots with miniature-based characters and digital dice to recreate the look and feel of a tabletop RPG.

(That would still make it more of horned dragon let's face it since horned dragons share green dragon lore)

If you somehow get past the Verduran Fork tier, any chance for the Kineticist to be vectored in? >>; Rage of Elements did come out AFTER Paizo cobbled together ORC...

(Would have edited the last one, but I seem to have missed the opportunity window.)

Also, no Leshys...? I get that such would interfere with romances for that run, but we can probably make do (and I'd actively prefer...) if we could also play matchmaker with companions.

The FAQ says that there are Leshy NPCS, but Leshy PCs have weird body types which interferes with the way they make armor appear on the miniature.

Which is a shame, because usually animations are the reasons to restrict body types and those don't really exist.

Hero Point: Early-Bird Extension

An issue with the Early-Bird Copper tiers (with coin) has now been fixed. Because of this snafu, we are extending the Early-Bird tiers by an EXTRA DAY to make sure that everyone who may have missed them will now have a chance to get them. Thank you for supporting Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand at DragonsDemand.com!

Now that I remember it, would the expansion packs increase the level cap? (I think I'm mostly interested in rank 5 spells--like Freezing Rain.)

EDIT: Just shy of 45% of baseline target. Now I just have to fish out graphs of how much was pledged when for Kingmaker and WotR...

The 3 DLC stretch goals would bring the level cap up from level 8 to level 10, according to the Kickstarter.

The Dragon Tyrant Aeteperax is an ancient black dragon that died a long time ago (from what I know of the lore)... So actually, that's the green dragon on the cover of the adventure that is weird to me! :O

But yeah, in the remaster, he might just be a horned dragon that happen to be black!

I kind of get why the team doesn't want Leshy PCs but I'm still super disappointed. That's my favorite PF ancestry, and despite being core they can't even make it in as a stretch goal? I'm still excited for this game and do intend to support it, but that still sucks.

Oooh right:
I forgot the first time new Aeteperax appears, he is using illusion of the old one.

(it does raise questions though because the old black dragon doesn't have direct equivalent in post remaster world)

I discovered that the initial stretch goal is USD 371,178. I'm not sure why Ossian Studios chose this specific number instead of, say, USD 350,000 or 400,000.

I'm really disappointed that this game is turn-based, rather than real-time like those developed by Owlcat Games.

As far as I remember, the backstory of this adventure is related to the Dominion of the Black, not the Elder Mythos. However, the USD 810,000 stretch goal features the Elder Mythos. Perhaps did Ossian Studios revise the story?

Probably because they aren't calculating goals in USD?

Exactly. The amounts are in Canadian dollars, since that's what they'll need to calculate taxes in. The confusion may stem from how the stretch goals DON'T have a USD equivalent listed (look at my last post in this thread to see those).

On a side note, them getting double the baseline will be enough to get us up to the Ratfolk and expanded crafting echelons.

PF2e is so action economy based, I don't really see how you could do it justice RTwP.

Even the Owlcat games kind of broke with characters who needed more than basic "move and attack/cast".

So uh, does anyone else feel like their emotions are being toyed with seeing RotRL specifically framed in that video?

Not very sure about this, actually. For two reasons:

1: There still hasn’t been a very useful demo presented of the game. I’m not really sure how a user…interfaces with the game, and without seeing the game in action…what am I…backing? This is kinda weird to me. The first Update has a link to an…interview…with a person…not playing the game. About the game. Great. I don’t need hype, or good intentions, or passion, or more background of how experienced these guys are. I know who they are, and I was there downloading hakpaks for NWN back in the day. I want to see what they have made now, in action.

2: It is beyond disappointing that the player can make only one (1) character, and then has to choose from a cast of companions that are preset. Given I want to play the game to interact with the ruleset and have little to no interest in Golarion lore or the presented companions “backstories” the companions as currently presented are….problematic. As someone said in the Comments of the KS, there is currently no option to play through the game with a party of all fighters, or all wizards.

Would much rather be able to build a party of four characters, and play the game, rather than get involved with three other, preset personalities.

So currently it’s a watch and wait.
