Pathfinder Society: Year 4 Announcement

Wonder abounds!

Following the dramatic conclusion to the Year of Shattered Sanctuaries, the Pathfinder Society has been entrusted with a vast hoard of treasure! The Grand Lodge’s vaults overflow with an abundance of magic items and valuable relics. The structure even holds a few strange creatures, such as a wise-cracking animate skull that claims it can’t remember anything about its past yet insists it can still cast powerful spells. It’s up to the Pathfinders to learn what these oddities are, where they come from, what they do—and why a nefarious enemy from the Society’s past wants to claim the contents of the vaults for herself!

Welcome to the Year of Boundless Wonder!

The intro scenario for Year of Boundless Wonder debuts at GenCon 2022 (August 4–7; both in person and online) with Pathfinder Society Scenario #4-01: Intro: Year of Boundless Wonder by yours truly. In this repeatable adventure for characters of 1st–4th level, you can earn credit for playing it multiple times with multiple characters—offering additional incentives to those who wish to introduce their friends to the Year of Boundless Wonder even if they’ve already played it!

Stay tuned for more information in our Organized Play Monthly Update blogs and check back next week for a look into Mike’s process for crafting the plot and primary themes of the Year of Boundless Wonder.

Sounds like a big year ahead for the Vigilant Seal faction.

Eando Kline rips off another eversticky note reading "destroy" and slaps it on a crate of cursed potions. "Whew. I think that's the last of them."

Zarta peers up from the strange chalice she was examining. "No. There's another room. That way, behind the pile of chests."

Eando sighs. "I'm going to need more of these. Got any more 'destroy' stickies?"

Zarta tosses him a stack. "Sure. I've only been using the ones that say 'protect' and 'contain.'" She suppresses a wicked grin while Eando storms off into the adjoining chamber, notes in hand, grumbling something about the abundant arrogance of archivists.

"Now," she says, picking up the chalice, "whatever shall we do with you?"

Wait! Did I miss something? I thought the conclusion of Shattered Sanctuaries hadn't happened yet.

Sorry, the wording is a bit misleading. Year of Shattered Sanctuaries will conclude in July, and Year of Boundless Wonder will launch at GenCon (early August).

What, you mean there's gonna be some sort of other talking weapon?

So, for those of use who like to try and play the season with one character, is it possible to get a feeling on the number of meta-plot scenarios and their levels?

We published a blog post laying out all of Year of Shattered Sanctuaries, and I'd love to do the same thing for Year of Boundless Wonder. We're not at the point of being ready to do that yet, though. I can say that the structure of Year of Boundless Wonder is similar to Year of Shattered Sanctuaries in that there are multiple standalone stories which all contribute to a greater whole, rather than a linear progression of scenarios intended to be played in a specific order.

I really like that structure, Mike. So often as an organizer it is hard for me to actually play scenarios. But having shorter story arcs means that I can sometimes arrange to play a 2-arc story and enjoy it rather than thinking about all I am missing on the main metaplot.

We actually managed to lay the Shattered Sanctuary storyline out in an order from level one to level 8, where you could play all the mini arcs on the one character, which is cool, as they got the whole story. From memory, the character had to start at level 3. I was just curious if it was possible to do the same this year.

Really enjoyed this structure for Year Three - I "booked" different characters for each mini-arc - and now looking forward to doing it again for Year Four!

Great, but if that skull says his name is Morte, I'm checking my back for tattoos.
