September Update— Pathfinder Society (2nd edition), Spotlights and Conventions!

Wednesday, September 4, 2019

Hope everyone in the northern hemisphere had a good end of summer and that our southern hemisphere folks’ winter wasn’t too unbearable. We have lots of news, so diving right in!

PAX Unplugged 2019

The end of 2019 is in sight and planning for 2020 continues apace. PAX Unplugged has room for a few more volunteers. Visit www.organizedplayfoundation.org/paizo for more information or to complete a volunteer questionnaire. The organizing committee of Bradley Fiske and Shannon Petrosky, advised by Premier Event Team Coordinator Bob Jonquet, will be reaching out to volunteer applicants in the near future as plans solidify and schedules come together.

Pathfinder Society (second edition) Character Rebuild

If you’ve joined us for our first few weeks of the Pathfinder Society campaign, you know that we still have a few bugs to work out to get the campaign running smoothly. Between improving and fleshing out the Pathfinder Society Guide to Play, fixing issues with reporting scenarios, getting the Achievement Points chart online, and other bits and pieces that have come up, we’re working hard to get the campaign to a place we can all be proud of. On top of all of that, we know that players and GMs are all learning an entirely new game system.

We’d like to give our community time to explore, learn, and not worry about looking back on their past character decisions and wishing they had made different ones. To that end, we’ll be releasing a free, limited-time boon on the Achievement Points chart, which you can apply immediately to rebuild your character. The window for applying this boon will close on September 19th. Rebuilding will continue to appear on the Achievement Points chart after that date, but it will no longer be a free option.

Thank you to all our players and GMs who jumped in and provided feedback! We cannot have a campaign without you all and we greatly value your communication.

Campaign Coins

We had no new additions to the recipient roster this month.

Stars

As we said before, even though publication of Pathfinder Society (first edition) scenarios wrapped in July, we are still supporting the program. This includes GMs earning their 5th star for running games. This month, two GMs obtained their last star. To achieve this milestone, GMs run 150 games, of which at least 50 must be unique scenarios and 10 special scenarios, as well as run a game for a venture-captain. A conservative estimate of time needed to reach 5-stars is 650 hours! To the GMs listed below, thank you very much for the time and energy you spend running Pathfinder Society games! Huge kudos on your achievement!

We’re manually compiling the data from the rubric reviews while we work to get the online reporting in place! Please send any reviews to organizedplay@paizo.com.

Convention Listing

We have organized play activities at quite a few conventions in the upcoming months, so if you want to get your game on, check out the list below! The list includes all the event support requests received to date. If you see one missing, ping the organizer and have them submit a request for support or have them email me at organizedplay@paizo.com to discuss their event. Good choice about the free rebuild, is there a link or tutorial about how players can redeem they AcP? I am unfortunately unable to find it.

I suspect ACP point redemption will be on the Boons tab of the My Organized Play page, once they implement it. Currently it only has the Playtest boons.

Step 1. Wait for the interface to redeem AcP to exist...

As someone living in said country: Gods I wish it was! First time hearing about ANYTHING pfs out here, so I'll have to check it out next year, it's booked up and too expensive to drop everything and travel 3 or 4 hours to get there.

Are there that many people that need to do a rebuild before September 19th? There's barely enough content to get past the free rebuilds at level one!

EDIT: Oh, it's free until the 19th. So if you got to level 2 and we're unhappy with something you could change it for free before the 19th. That is possible so it makes some sense.

Tonya and Linda --

I love so much that you are offering this option!

May I ask for an extension on that boon until the New Year? I know of several regions where the majority of the PF2 launch was effectively held back for a September Convention. That is true for Play-by-Post, but also locally for me for Minnesota. I can't help wondering if it isn't true in other areas as well. I think that moving the deadline for the free rebuild to January 1st would allow everyone a chance to not only explore their new characters, but also to decide if they want to adopt a regional background from the Lost Omens World Guide.

Even better, it might help assuage some of the worries about these concerns:
1) when the next Additional Resources update will appear;
2) when ACP boon purchasing will launch on this site.

It would give us all a bit of breathing room, and allow all regions the chance to participate!

Hmm

There's still a lot of moving parts that we don't have any insight into, and it would be great to get some statements of prioritization/expectation setting from Tonya/Linda.

I understand that the following list of topics have items that make estimation difficult (interactions between multiple teams, etc) and timelines are always mutable, but it would be nice to be able to manage expectation locally instead of just having to say 'I have no clue'.

Topics:
Sanctioning FoP/AoA Chapter 1.
Sanctioning LOWG
Fixing ACP's display for GMs
Displaying/tracking glyphs
Redeeming ACPs
More details on under-specified Playtest Boons
Printing ACP/Playtest boons
Updating the default reporting sheet to have enough room for Player #
Next pass of guide updates
Printable PDF version of the guide

Its a long list, not even covering the routine things going on. I understand why it takes time, but would really like to know what to expect/when.

As some people upthread mention, the free rebuild isn't going to work/be tracked 'properly' unless the redeeming ACPs/printing boons is all worked out, so it seems like that window should be extended until that functionality exists?

Just wanted to say I'd been trying to create a similar list but wasn't happy with how it looked.

As someone who is predominantly playing PFS2 online, an extended deadline for rebuilding would be appreciated.

Depending on how many Achievement Points are required to rebuild, it could take months to acquire them via PbP.

And my character is one of those that started at Level 3.

As a note, we are down a teammember at present, due to John's moving to the Starfinder Team, so we are focusing our energies on getting the scenarios out the door. After that, here is where we stand:

Sanctioning FoP/AoA Chapter 1 - as quickly as possible

Sanctioning LOWG - as quickly as possible

Fixing ACP's display for GMs - working with tech, don't have an eta.

Displaying/tracking glyphs - working with tech, not to far off, as it uses the same tech as the novas. Once those bugs are worked out, this will go live.

Redeeming ACPs - after PTP fixes. Boons are in writing stage, reward chart is further on.

More details on under-specified Playtest Boons - updated the redemption site, working on getting the boon sheets done and uploaded.

Printing ACP/Playtest boons - see individual list entries.

Updating the default reporting sheet to have enough room for Player # - unsure, part of a larger discussion.

Next pass of guide updates - guide conversion is going well and the team is working in a test environment. This takes tech, so has a limiting factor, but it is one of our top priorities.

Printable PDF version of the guide - will roll when the guide updates roll from test to live.

So is there a move away from the RIP for PF2. I ask for a few reasons.
1. There is no mention of it in the guide or on the RIP page.
2. There are no boon sheets for PF2 so no table roles.
3. It does not add to your AcP points.

Mostly I ask because a good number of game stores in my area charge a table fee to D&D but not PFS1 or SFS because the RIP incentivizes player spending money at there FLGS. As of right now there is no incentive to the player or the store to play PF2 over SFS or PFS1.

I'm sure there will be something along those lines later, but for now the players have incentive to play PFS2 to earn AcP (as do the GMs) and the stores definitely have a lot of incentive to promote PFS2 because the sales are high and it is pulling new players into the stores. Those new players are buying books, dice, cards, etc.

Our store changed its fee structure around. Now, first of all, you have to understand they took over another storefront in the mini-mall and put in a brand new game room with the Ultimate Gaming tables. Our old fee had been a flat $3 per player with the GM getting $5 in store credit. They now charge players $5 with $3 going to store credit and the GMs receive no credit, but pay no fee. I haven't heard anyone complain about this new policy as of yet.

More of a question than a slight. As far as players buying dice etc. most of the new players in our area are either pf1 players or converts from 5e. In referance to the store they have said the reason they charge the D&D tables and not ours is because we always buy stuff and they never do. I have to belive that the impetus behind a good portion of those expenditures is the RIP.
