Kingmaker Campaign Unlocks!

Monday, May 13, 2019

We've surpassed our goal of 1,000 backers for the Kingmaker 10th Anniversary crowdfunding campaign! This means all backers have unlocked PDF copies of People of the River and Guide to the River Kingdoms.

Our next goal is to reach 1,500, where all backers will be granted:

  • 8 Scenarios: Each of these Pathfinder Society adventures adds a lot of flavor to the River Kingdoms, and each can be completed in around 4 hours. They’re perfect for side quests or for jumping off points to future adventures in the Kingmaker Adventure Path.

  • Pathfinder First Edition Boon—Aldori Dueling: Boons are in-game rewards granted to players that are above and beyond what a basic Pathfinder Society character begins with. In this case, you gain the Aldori Dueling boon, which grants your character proficiency with the iconic Aldori dueling sword. These will be delivered in June to backers paizo.com accounts.

  • Pathfinder Second Edition Backgrounds—Future River Regent and River Pirate: In Pathfinder Second Edition, choosing a background is a key part of building your character, granting unique flavor and providing two ability score boosts, training in a specific skill, Lore skill training, and a specific skill feat. This bonus unlocks two new backgrounds for you, tied to the River Kingdoms. These will be delivered in mid-July to backers paizo.com accounts.

We're also happy to announce that the Kingmaker Adventure Path will soon be sanctioned for Pathfinder Society play! Once sanctioned, rules and chronicle sheets will be available from the Additional Resources page and Adventure Path volumes added to our reporting system.

Help us reach 1,500 backers on the Kingmaker 10th Anniversary Campaign and stay tuned for more exciting unlocks!

Boo.

We went over this when there were boons associated with the Emerald Spire campaign.

Please don't do this. I find this just as objectionable now as I did then.

My Previous thoughts.

Is it currently planned to include both of those backgrounds in the books that are currently being crowdfunded, or will these stay exclusive to backers for this project? Is this early access to those options or exclusive access?

I kinda hope that there will be a way for future players to access any material like that.

And while Silverhex Chronicles does fit the region, it is currently listed as a free scenario, which makes it a good way for players and GM that are unfamiliar with the region to read something about it and check out PFS ^^

I feel that touting "The Silverhex Chronicle" as a backer unlockable is extremely misleading as the scenario is already a free product available to anyone that has a Paizo.com account.

A better option might have been to offer 7 unlockable scenarios and saying that they can go download "The Silverhex Chronicles" right now to get a brief taste of what the River Kingdoms have to offer to the avid adventurer.

Once again, I can't pledge because of the wanky garbled speech my software is presenting me with... aka I'm blind and can't understand a word when I click on the link. To be fair, I've never had this problem with kickstarter, so I don't have a clue why this is happening. I've played and GM'ed this adventure before, so I want it for 2nd ed. Please, someone out there help me with this. I really want this book/pdf.

weird. Macafee is telling me it's a dangeous site

Valantrix -- Google Chrome keeps asking me if I want to translate the page even though everything appears to be English. There's a button in the top, right-hand corner that allows people to change languages, even though that only appears to change a small amount of the text.
Perhaps it's due to that button that your text to speech software isn't working properly?
I don't know if your software can bypass that or not, but I've posted on the campaign asking if anyone knows a way around it and I've reached out directly to the company for you.

If you want to reach out to them their e-mail address is: contact@gameontabletop.com

Hopefully they can figure something out for you. I'll let you know when I hear from them.

Why does this blogpost have the same title as a previous blogpost?

I too feel it's kinda cheap to give something that is free to anyone to download, the silverhex chronicles, as a bonus. I'd find something else to replace that soon unless paizo makes all free quests no longer free anymore to justify this.

The campaign is halfway through - 8 of 16 days are over - and has over 1,100 backers and collected over $200,000!

If we reach double that at the end (over 2,000 backers & $400,000), we need to see some additional stretch goals.

I really wish we'd get a reprint of the "Bandit Outpost" flip-mat which depicts Oleg's trading outpost - the base of the pcs in book one.

I don't want generic campsites but flip-mats of relevant adventure areas.
I also like bonus content for the Kingmaker hardcover campaign, but don't care for the companions and their sidequests.
I hope we'll get some nice new stretch goals in those directions after Nok Nok.

We may not reach flip-mats for "The house at the end of time" from book 6, but i hope we'll get something for book 2 at least. ;-)

The Exchange

I totally agree! They really should give us Bandit Outpost and the Stag Lord's Lair as they are pivotal locations will see a lot of use. I'm really excited to see this for PF2 because it was my children's first AP in Pathfinder ever. Would love to make the revamped version a recurring theme at our family get togethers and holidays and the like.

I just hope they don't unlock something five minutes before the campaign ends. There is only a small part of each day when I can check the crowdfunding site for these things.

I really really hope that the 8 scenarios will be converted in Pathfinder V2, else I do not see the point since we already have them.
Offering them converted in PF2 however would be a really great idea. Or even better let the backers select in which version of PF they want it.

Dark Archive

$15k to the next stretch goal (Tristian for the companion guide).

To me it seems like it always slows down before the next companion guide add-on.

After that, it gets more interesting with the "Barony" expansion for the campaign hardcover! :-)

I really like the idea of this Companion guide, as I already own the AP and wasn't really getting into 2nd edition, so it represents my principal 'get' here, but gosh, it's pretty anemic so far, and the characters I am really interested in reading more backstory upon, like Octavia and Ekundayo, haven't even been mentioned yet, and seem vanishingly unlikely to get written up at all. (Although Nok-Nok is also a favorite, and seems likely to make it.)

I'm afraid you may have set your expectations a little higher than is realistic. The first $100k or so went fast, but after that things have been more at a pace of about 100 new backers and something like $10k per day.

I expect PF1 to PF2 conversion to be really easy, so I don't think converting older books should be the priority. Given that they will have a fixed amount of time for this project, I'd rather have the developers create new content instead, so they can give us the biggest possible Companion book, the Barony expansion, etc.

Our intent here was simply to make it easier for backers to get all of the Kingmaker-adjacent scenarios in one bundle. I think that’s much friendlier than “here’s a process to get all but one, and here’s a totally different process to get the last.” (I’m also confident that the latter method would ensure that lots of people wouldn’t ever bother getting that last one.)

Personally, I'm really hoping for more companions. Now that the 20th level expansion and map folio have been unlocked, they're what I'm primarily interested in. (I do kind of wish they were spaced closer together, as it's not looking likely that we'll get all of them unless some are planned to be added later regardless of stretch goals).

That would be neat wouldn't it? Spread the word about the campaign and help unlock new level-ups and maybe we could see about getting those added to the mix.

What happens in the case where a backer of this campaign already has one or both of the River Kingdoms PDFs? Can we gift a duplicate PDF to someone else, or is it simply lost as being redundant?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

6 people marked this as a favorite.

After the campaign ends, each backer will receive a unique code that, when redeemed on paizo.com, will add all of the available PDFs that they've earned/purchased access to their available digital content. (It is possible that we may end up dividing the content into a few predetermined groups of PDFs—for example, one code for Legendary Games PDFs, another code for the People of the River and Guide to the River Kingdoms PDFs, and (assuming the 1500 backer goal is reached) one for the PFS scenarios... but I currently presume that we'll be handling them together.)

And (again assuming we reach the 1500 backer stretch goal), in July each backer will receive another unique code unlocking the 2E PFS backgrounds.

And when all of the Kingmaker PDFs drop in 2020, each backer will receive a code (or possibly multiple codes—it's far too early to presume) that will add those products as appropriate.

In short, you'll be given some number of codes, and each code will be connected to a predetermined list of products. If you want to give a code to someone else, you can, but it adds all of its associated products to one paizo.com account, and if that account already has those products, it doesn't have any effect. (I guess you could say that duplicate products don't stack.) You can't keep just some of what it unlocks and give the rest away.

Hi to you O beloved DM.

Agreed. This said since indeed it should be an easy "translation", would make sense to have one person in Paizo to do it rather than thousands of backers having to do the same stuff in parallel in Canada (smile), France (double smile) and elsewhere... IMHO.

PS: Don't blame me Vic, I'm trying to win some xp with my DM.

Yeah, but gameontabletop doesn't have the "remind me" button (as far as I can see), which one of the big reasons for that last 48h jump on kickstarter.

$5k to reach the next add-on: Tristian & his sidequests will be added to the "companion guide".

After that, it get´s interesting again, as the main book increases in size and adds more kingdom stuff! :-)

Wish there was an unlock to have the AP itself for 1e (not just the Bestiary, although still appreciated). Obviously put in as an add-on. I would happily pay another $50 for the book. As I am sure there would be many others.

Not with all the updates that will be in this one. And would love to have it compiled in the nice, hardback book. Much like Rise of the Runelords and Curse of Crimson Throne.

But that was the point of the Rise and Curse books too, updating for a new edition. Both of those were originally written for 3.5.

Excellent point. I had forgotten what the cost of the 2e Kingmaker book was. I would certainly have no issues paying the same amount for a 1e book as part of an add-on.

Keep in mind I am saying it would be an add-on. I wouldn't expect them to allow people to purchase the 1e book instead of the 2e book, as this was the drive of the campaign. Just some of us want the treatment done for 1e as well as we still love and play it.

Cori Marie wrote:

It doesn't have to be a previous edition to only make it worthwhile. Also remember that there were other changes and updates done with the other compilations as well, at least I know with Rise of the Runelords. And Paizo has made it clear there are going to be a number of updates to this Kingmaker as well, besides converting it to 2e. Those of use whom still love playing 1e would appreciate those also, besides it being condensed in a nice hardcover volume.

I understand Paizo "wants to move on" with 2e. I respect that. With new sourcebooks I would completely understand that. I wouldn't expect them to release a 1e counterpart with every new hardcover that is released. But when releasing something originally from 1e, and the book is also being updated with a chock full of new info as well, I do feel in those situations releasing it also in 1e is reasonable to ask for.

I truly do appreciate they are releasing a Bestiary for 1e with the converted monster and NPC stats, as well as other 'rules' (as they've indicated). But for those of us that will want to run this new Kingmaker in 1e, I just have concerns there will be a lot in the book that will still need to be converted, so it would be great if we could get the new version of Kingmaker AP in 1e, as well.

Yes things were added to both previous compilations, and things were changed to be updated to the current system (making characters that were wizards into alchemists and making a certain vigilante, a well, vigilante), but the primary reasons for the books were that the previous print versions were sold out, and that they were originally written for a previous system.

Not going to go back and forth here, but my point still stands that making the new compilation is still worthwhile for those who would want to play it in 1e, with all the changes and updates they have made with it. If there were very minimal changes, I would agree with you. But with the Companions alone, and now taking it up to 20th level are huge changes, those who still play 1e would also appreciate.

And the requirement of it being sold out certainly applies with Kingmaker in 1e, as it has been sold out for awhile now.

Erik Mona wrote:

I wanted to circle back now that the campaign is live.

Ultimately, we decided to go with a 1E Bestiary similar to the 5E version that was part of the original plan. This will provide rules and stat blocks to help players run the campaign in 1E, as a companion to the big 2E campaign.

Printing up a big archive edition didn't work economically into the model for this crowdfunding effort, so we decided to go with something else that would allow 1E players to run the expanded and (hopefully!) improved campaign.

So that's where we're at with 1E support. Thanks for your feedback. It was very helpful!

Edit: To be clear, I'm just saying that if it's unfeasible for them to print an archive of the originals, it's pretty much certain they can't do a 1e version of the updated version.

Personally, I have no skin in this game. I started a Kingmaker campaign, and it fell flat for me as the GM and my group, so I'm not backing either way.

I'm ok with a Bestiary for Pathfinder classic at least. Of course, it means anyone wanting to run it in Pathfinder is going to pay quite a bit more than the 2e folks, but I'll take it over nothing. The books have been sold out for a while.

Thank you for the information.

As long as the information in the Bestiary has conversions for all of the encounters throughout the AP, then I am ok with it. For example, when having to make a skill check it will of course have the 2e skill and DC, hopefully the 1e equivalent skill and DC is in the Bestiary (for each skill encounter). Same with the Kingdom Management rules, if anything is 2e specific, as long as it is converted in the 1e Bestiary book.

I mean it would be nice to have it all in one book, instead of having to flip back and forth between the books, but I understand where Erik is coming from and I do appreciate Paizo taking the extra step, they originally weren't going to do, and making the 1e Bestiary.

There is still part of me that has a feeling that there will be a decent amount not converted and would need to do so on my own. But I can ask more on that directly at Gen Con, hopefully they will have more of an idea at that point.
