Calling for Volunteers!

Wednesday, January 16, 2019

The Organized Play Foundation (OPF) is putting the final touches on their call for volunteers for Paizo organized play programs. Paizo requested volunteers for Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild, Pathfinder Society Academy, Starfinder Society, and Pathfinder Society version 2 at PaizoCon, Origins, Gen Con, UK Games Expo and PAX Unplugged. Registration launches on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 6:00 AM Pacific time. To register, visit OPF Convention Volunteer Page and complete questionnaires for the events you wish to attend. Due to how requests are processed by convention organizing committees, you will need to complete a different questionnaire for every event you wish to volunteer for. Registering early on will ensure maximum choice of program and level of volunteerism, though cancellations mean volunteers are often accepted up to the week before the event.

Each convention will offer a volunteer incentive package based on the number of blocks an individual volunteer. While volunteer incentives vary between each convention, potential offerings include rooms, badges, printed Paizo products, credit for use at Paizo.com, t-shirts, free scenarios, and in-game rewards. The listings on the Organized Play Foundation will outline each conventions incentive package.

Check back next week as the organized play developers preview this month's scenarios for Starfinder Society and Pathfinder Society!

Until next time—Explore, Report, Cooperate!

After my experience with not getting the Starfinder rules until a few weeks after everyone else for the demo team at it's inaugural run, I would ask for a "we've started" and/or "we've finished" post or email when the 2e rules get sent to volunteers, if possible.

I echo this request.

That'd be nice, but could also be served by folks (on the slack channel) stating that they have received theirs. Then, you'll know if you should have.

And, all, please join the slack channels that you are invited to. They will help A LOT!

The trick there is that they don't always release everything at the same moment or day, so knowing when it starts is nice, but knowing that you'll know when it is supposed to be done would relieve the anticipation anxiety because if they're not done, you don't need to worry about not having it yet.

Are you saying it’s going to be a whale of a good time...?

The issue with notifications is that it is usually customer service that is dropping materials and they do not frequent the convention social channels. Since the organizing committee does not have direct contact with customer service nor access to individual accounts, we generally don’t know any more than you do when a particular drop starts or ends. Usually we know something is/has dropped when a volunteer mentions it. Only after some time has passed and we hear that someone has not received a scenario that we assume it was missed and follow up.

We've passed the schedules to the Origins and PaizoCon committees, so they will be reaching out in the next week or so to volunteers.

Work on the Pathfinder Core Rulebook (2nd ed) is wrapping up soon and we are working on ways to get the ruleset to GMs as quickly as possible. It will be a rolling grant - UKGE first, then Origins, then Gen Con.

Slack channels are invaluable for keeping up with information and having feedback from the devs. We have channels for SFS 2-00 and PFS 10-98, as well as different Gen Con departments. Have general ones for each convention as well.

Link to the Slack page is here

Once there, look for the pinned messages for the individual channels. Request access and we will add you to them.

Thanks to HMM who is our slack concierge and helping people get to where they want to go!

You know enough to request specific channel access. The programs assigned to you were indicated in the email. Plus, if you are running 2E on Thursday PM, SFS on Friday PM, or 1E on Saturday PM, those are the specials.

Any chance we will get an Origins Slack channel as well? I assume the existing channels for PF2 and the specials could be used for discussion by both groups.

Ahhh. Yes, having all our convention conversations running concurrently in this thread is both good and bad. Since we've never done it this way before, most of us are struggling with the idea that not everyone is talking about the same subject.

I've made Origins, PaizoCon, and UKGE general tips channels, so volunteers at those conventions should join the main Slack page then jump into their con specific channels. For those running SFS 2-00 at Origins, PFS 1-98 at PaizoCon or Origins, or 2e demos at Origins or UKGE, feel free to ask for specific access to those channels.

We have need of a GM who is particularly experienced with the Pathfinder Society Organized Card Guild. You must know the rules very well and be available to volunteer for [at least] all of the following slots at Gen Con: Thursday AM, Thursday Afternoon, Friday AM, Friday Afternoon, Saturday AM, Saturday Afternoon, Sunday AM. If you meet these requirements and are interested in helping us out, please send an email to the organizing committee genconleads@gmail.com

@Bob: cross posting into the ACG Guild forum since the people who would be interested may not be looking at this post.

Just wanted to keep you informed in case you are looking for more Gen Con tickets to appear. Due to PaizoCon and compiling new GMs who have volunteered this week, you will not see new tickets appearing until sometime next week or perhaps the week following. Paizo staff will be traveling to UK Games Expo immediately following PaizoCon and this will impact their availability. I will notify the community when we have added more tickets so you can check the catalog. Of course there is the possibility of tickets being returned, so you can certainly keep an eye out for the odd ticket popping back into the catalog.

There is no need to email us and ask if we still need GMs. The answer is going to be yes. We typically accept volunteers right up to Gen Con. If you are interested, just go ahead and complete the online questionnaire. If you are already a volunteer and want to add to your schedule, just drop us an email and indicate which slot(s) you would like to add.

Please be as flexible as possible with your availability and game systems. Also, do not try to specify which scenario/s you are willing to run. It is extremely difficult to assign schedules that way and unfair to other volunteers who would also like to cherry-pick their scenarios. We do our best to accommodate volunteers as much as possible, but this process is extremely complex and we appreciate your patience and flexibility.

Hello, this is a special request for the organizers of GenCon and Origins. Can you please print about double or even triple the starfinder boons that you think you may need? At PaizoCon, they ran out of Starfinder boons because most of those playing PF1 asked for Starfinder boons when rolling for boons.

I think that this might be a good idea for all the conventions that let you choose which game system you roll for at the Prize table.

Thanks,

It might not be as bad at GenCon, as there should be PFS2 boons. That should pull some of the 'PFS1 is ending I don't want a new PFS1 boon' market rather than having all of that population roll for SFS. But yes Origin would likely show the same system-based boon demand that we saw at PaizoCon.

Every year we get requests from players to sit at the table of specific GMs. Generally, we discourage this practice for a number of reasons. However, in an effort to be as accomodating as possible, we have a process by which players can get pre-mustered to a table with a specific GM. We lay it out here:

-First, we do not perform this function before the convention. All pre-mustering requests must be completed on site with an HQ official. We are available anytime after 7am on Thursday

-pre-mustering is only done by table, not by player. Meaning it must be a complete table. If a player or two wants to play at a specific GM's table, they will need to recruit a full table of six to qualify

-the players must seek out the GM and notify them of their intent to pre-muster to their table. The GM has to approve for the process to proceed

-the players must give their real tickets to the GM who will bring them to HQ. None of the players can be using generic tickets

-the GM will present the request to an HQ official who will verify the tickets and make a note in the marshal records that the table has been pre-mustered

-when the slot/game occurs, the players just go directly to the table. They do not have to check in with the marshal

-the request must be completed no later than the end of the slot prior to the one in question. After that time, we are in the process of mustering the slot and making special requests at that time add unnecessary errors to the process

We will be closing the Gen Con volunteer google app on Sunday July 14th. If you know of anyone interested in volunteering who has not yet done so, they need to get on it ASAP

If GMs who have already confirmed their assignments need to modify their commitment and do NOT have the app, they can still use other methods of contact after that point, yes?

Hello, is there a new link for the slack channel? The ones I have found in the forum are all obsolete/ inactive.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

Something interesting to note. Last year we had 197 GMs volunteer for 8+ blocks (hotel level). This year we reduced the requirement to 7+ blocks and only have 162 GM volunteers at that level. Perhaps the claims that the extra slot was keeping GMs away were not entirely accurate.

We have virtually the same number of people doing ten blocks, and a slightly fewer number doing nine blocks. As you would expect we have a huge reduction in the number of people doing eight blocks and a huge (though not equal) number doing seven blocks this year.

Interestingly, we have twice as many people doing six blocks this year as opposed to seven blocks last year (both being one short of earning a hotel)

Our data analysis over the past four years pretty clearly shows that the decision to volunteer has less to do with the incentives and more to do with other factors. Generally, most people seem to decide they are going to Gen Con and then volunteer for whatever level gets them the reward they want. If they have to get their room paid for in order to attend, they will volunteer for however many blocks it takes to get that incentive (ignoring/avoiding significant outliers of course). Its similar to how human resource and employment hiring data shows that of the top ten incentives for happiness in a job, salary/pay is lower than most others.

Does that mean we going to return to requiring eight blocks next year? I couldn't say (probably not). We certainly cannot continue this trend of shrinking volunteer participation year after year and think we'll continue to get the entire Sagamore ballroom or offer the variety of events we do.

Perhaps but we didn’t know that information until this week. We were very careful to inform potential volunteers not to expect the 2E CRB as the reward book because we simply did not know what Paizo was going to donate. A number of people were surprised to learn the Starfinder option is the Beginner Box. It wouldn’t have been totally unexpected had the Pathfinder book been Lost Omens (had it not been delayed of course). Plus, when I said double, we’re still only talking about a handful of people so not that much an incentive in the grand scheme. It’s a pretty small number who are doing the “extra” slot over the badge level, but not two more for the hotel level.

4/5

Just to provide a contrarian data point, the reason I am doing 7 tables (for the first time this year) is for the room. If the number was still set at 8, I probably would have just commuted in for one day of the Gallowspire Special and True Dungeon.

Yep, that's what I did. Tempted to add a couple tables for the boon, but I figure it's not that important to me.
