Electronics is the one that is helpful, first. You are unable to turn it on. It's battery needs a replacement.

"Ok, so let's go with your idea of having an agent meet us at Cill Onchen to pay us. Who do we deliver it to, and where would we find them? Is there anything else we need to know?"
"You will be delivering the grain to a granary by the name of Pihlaja Granary," says Orrin. "After the safe delivery, my agent by the name of Telemon will pay you the credits."

Frankie Faro |

Frank frowns as Agate prepares to open the case. "Uh, why're you tryin' to crack open the ancient artifact he just gave us as collateral for our future payment? Just stop messin' with it and keep it somewhere safe, fer goodness sakes." Its value just is in being old, right? Not in working, which it wouldn't since there aren't any Verizon cellular networks around. Frank would just be more worried about it losing value from her messing with it than whether it works or not.
The gambler shakes his head at Agate and nods at their mysterious new employer. "Alright, then. Where's the rice?" He looks at the others. "How long will it take you folks to get ready to get on the road?"

"I should be able to get this running. Not sure it still works, but the circuitry looks like an early computer. Should be worth something," Agate opines and gives the device back to Orrin, unless we are keeping it as collateral, as offered. If we are keeping it, she carefully restores its casing, and wraps it in cloth and places it deep in her pack to keep it dry.

Agate smiles sweetly at Frankie's skepticism and caution as she works on the device. "I'll get my gear together and inform Malachi and Björn. Hope folks don't mind sharing the road with a big bear. He won't bother us but can be pretty tough in a fight."

"The rice is loaded in bags on a cart," Orrin says. "all it needs is a good horse."

Malachi Von Darmstadt |

Doe anyone in the group have a horse that would pull the wagon?
Malachi's bear could pull the cart. What rolls if any would he have to make to get him to accept a harness? Also what kind of roll would it take to jury-rig a cart harness to work on a bear? Repair?

I think Riding is the best skill to get the bear to accept a harness. See page 32 of SWADE. Repair would work to jury rig a cart.

Malachi tries to get the coax Björn into a harness, but the bear will not participate. Malachi has never tried to ride his friend and so the bear is not used to such things.
"Better rent or buy a good draft horse," he shrugs as it becomes obvious the bear will not cooperate.

Frankie Faro |

Frankie, who had come downstairs in a set of helmetless EBA with his hat and a woven serape concealing his torso- and more importantly his guns and hands- chuckles and nods. "You know what? That works." The gambler has a sleek brown horse with composite material armor covering its flanks, chest, neck, and head. He looks like a man prepared to be ambushed in the wilderness.

Frankie, you're headed North first, then turn Northwest.

Not sure if everyone can roll the notice or if only the first one counts. I'll make rolls for Agate, Malachi, and Bjorn, just in case.

I wanted everyone to roll notice, but three players rolling it is enough. You see a monster from the Rifts. It appears to be a cross from a tiger and a crocodile!

Agate Copperdyne |

Could we get setting information? How far have we gone when this happens? What part of the day? What is the landscape like (I assume desert, but is it level, does the road run straight or are their hills and valleys to cross, etc.)? What is the weather like? What time of year is it, by the way?

You have been traveling all afternoon, and the Rift monster isn't heading towards you. You're nearly to the old I-84 turnoff. It's turning dusk, and the landscape is still semi-arid, with some green grass and a few trees. You are on the right side of the Great Salt Lake and on the left side of the mountains.
I figured a Rift Monster encounter would give you something to do. You are past Ogden city and on your way to Cill Ochen.

Agate Copperdyne |

"Let's keep a close watch on it. Would we call it an alliger or a tigator? Tigator sounds better."
As a precaution, Agate activates her goggles and uses the farsight ability to get a better look at the beast. It provides +2 to sight-based Notice checks, and the wearer gains access to darksight, farsight, and detect arcana.
Then she readies her JA-11. She sets her goggles up on her forehead and uses the rifle's multi-optics scope to keep an eye on the thing. She sets the rifle for bullets, which do less damage than the ion beam but are more accurate at long distances.
If the beast is not coming closer, she returns the goggles to her eyes and carries the rifle at the ready, safety on and pointed down.

Just in case she spots anything else worth knowing about it.

Malachi Von Darmstadt |

Rereading the character creation notes on Malichi's animal compnaion, the default status of the animal is that it is an extra. He can take the Beast Master edge again when he advances and turn it into a wild card.
One of his character creation Hero's Journey rolls gave him the following: He’s traveled far and wide, and he knows a lot about the world that could come in handy. Your character gains a +2 on any Common Knowledge rolls related to geography and understanding the people and places of North America. He also gains a +2 on Survival and Networking checks in North America.
I'll make a survival roll to see if he knows anything about this tigator.
Agate loans her magic imaging goggles to Malachi who studies the creature as well.
