I really need to figure a way of carrying my armour without wearing it

Agate smiles as she takes the ancient device. She runs a few basic tests on it to try to understand what it was supposed to do.

Not sure which of these might be helpful.

Electronics is the one that is helpful, first. You are unable to turn it on. It's battery needs a replacement.

Female Human Parry 8(9) / RATN 4(6) / Toughness 15(6) / 3 Bennies

"Ok, so let's go with your idea of having an agent meet us at Cill Onchen to pay us. Who do we deliver it to, and where would we find them? Is there anything else we need to know?"

"You will be delivering the grain to a granary by the name of Pihlaja Granary," says Orrin. "After the safe delivery, my agent by the name of Telemon will pay you the credits."

Female Human Techno-Wizard (Novice)

If allowed, Agate will try to open the case to figure out how to get juice to it.

Frank frowns as Agate prepares to open the case. "Uh, why're you tryin' to crack open the ancient artifact he just gave us as collateral for our future payment? Just stop messin' with it and keep it somewhere safe, fer goodness sakes." Its value just is in being old, right? Not in working, which it wouldn't since there aren't any Verizon cellular networks around. Frank would just be more worried about it losing value from her messing with it than whether it works or not.

The gambler shakes his head at Agate and nods at their mysterious new employer. "Alright, then. Where's the rice?" He looks at the others. "How long will it take you folks to get ready to get on the road?"

Male Human Seasoned Power Armour Jock. Pace 6, Parry 5, Strain 6, Toughness 7 (13 in PA) (Armour 5, 16 in PA)

Well, I can be ready in 5 minutes. Just got to finish breakfast, crawl in my armour, and I am good.

Julian puts action to words, and starts shoveling in breakfast.

You manage to open the case, and the battery it runs on is an old ion battery.

Female Human Techno-Wizard (Novice)

"I should be able to get this running. Not sure it still works, but the circuitry looks like an early computer. Should be worth something," Agate opines and gives the device back to Orrin, unless we are keeping it as collateral, as offered. If we are keeping it, she carefully restores its casing, and wraps it in cloth and places it deep in her pack to keep it dry.

Agate smiles sweetly at Frankie's skepticism and caution as she works on the device. "I'll get my gear together and inform Malachi and Björn. Hope folks don't mind sharing the road with a big bear. He won't bother us but can be pretty tough in a fight."

Quickflex Gunslinger

Frankie shrugs, though he's still frowning at Agate opening up the device. "Long as you understand the bear don't get a share of the money." He nods at Julian. "Same, just need to grab my bags."

"The rice is loaded in bags on a cart," Orrin says. "all it needs is a good horse."

Female Human Parry 8(9) / RATN 4(6) / Toughness 15(6) / 3 Bennies

"Orrin, what is the value of that device? Is it just its age? Do you care if it works, or would you rather leave it as-is? Would tampering with it reduce its value?"

Male Human Psion 10/Atlanteologist 10

"It's worth twenty thousand credits as an ancient artifact," says Orrin. "It was intact, but if you can get it to work again that will significantly increase its value."

Male (he/him) Android (appears human) MARS Rogue Scholar & Sidekick of Agate

Doe anyone in the group have a horse that would pull the wagon?

Malachi's bear could pull the cart. What rolls if any would he have to make to get him to accept a harness? Also what kind of roll would it take to jury-rig a cart harness to work on a bear? Repair?

I think Riding is the best skill to get the bear to accept a harness. See page 32 of SWADE. Repair would work to jury rig a cart.

Quickflex Gunslinger

Frankie has a horse but he wouldn't be open to using it to pull this cart. Bear-pull seems the best bet if we can't just buy a donkey or something.

Malachi tries to get the coax Björn into a harness, but the bear will not participate. Malachi has never tried to ride his friend and so the bear is not used to such things.

"Better rent or buy a good draft horse," he shrugs as it becomes obvious the bear will not cooperate.

Male Human Seasoned Power Armour Jock. Pace 6, Parry 5, Strain 6, Toughness 7 (13 in PA) (Armour 5, 16 in PA)

Julian shrugs into Lazy boy, and grabs the handles of the cart.

I guess we are doing it the old fashioned way.

He then starts plodding along, wheeling the cart like a wheelbarrow

Frankie, who had come downstairs in a set of helmetless EBA with his hat and a woven serape concealing his torso- and more importantly his guns and hands- chuckles and nods. "You know what? That works." The gambler has a sleek brown horse with composite material armor covering its flanks, chest, neck, and head. He looks like a man prepared to be ambushed in the wilderness.

Survival, just for directions: 1d6 ⇒ 5

He nods in the direction they need to go. "Alright, let's get this done."

I wanted everyone to roll notice, but three players rolling it is enough. You see a monster from the Rifts. It appears to be a cross from a tiger and a crocodile!

Female Human Parry 8(9) / RATN 4(6) / Toughness 15(6) / 3 Bennies

Is it heading towards us? I assume with a Raise, Malachi saw it when it was pretty far off? How many rounds until it is close enough to attack?

Female Human Techno-Wizard (Novice)

Could we get setting information? How far have we gone when this happens? What part of the day? What is the landscape like (I assume desert, but is it level, does the road run straight or are their hills and valleys to cross, etc.)? What is the weather like? What time of year is it, by the way?

Quickflex Gunslinger

Not sure if Frankie rolled high enough to see it but figured we might as well address it:

"Heads up," says Frankie. "Rift monster incoming."

How far away will decide which weapon he draws. So far we know it's spring time and we left town in the morning.

You have been traveling all afternoon, and the Rift monster isn't heading towards you. You're nearly to the old I-84 turnoff. It's turning dusk, and the landscape is still semi-arid, with some green grass and a few trees. You are on the right side of the Great Salt Lake and on the left side of the mountains.

I figured a Rift Monster encounter would give you something to do. You are past Ogden city and on your way to Cill Ochen.

Quickflex Gunslinger

Frankie pauses and grunts. "No, wait, it's not heading this way." He shakes his head but keeps his eyes on the monster. "If it moves off we might as well try to find someplace to make camp around here."

Why would we fight it if it's not moving toward us?

Female Human Parry 8(9) / RATN 4(6) / Toughness 15(6) / 3 Bennies

"I agree. It might be intelligent, and no sense in killing an intelligent creature unless it tries to kill us first."

Female Human Techno-Wizard (Novice)

"Let's keep a close watch on it. Would we call it an alliger or a tigator? Tigator sounds better."

As a precaution, Agate activates her goggles and uses the farsight ability to get a better look at the beast. It provides +2 to sight-based Notice checks, and the wearer gains access to darksight, farsight, and detect arcana.

Then she readies her JA-11. She sets her goggles up on her forehead and uses the rifle's multi-optics scope to keep an eye on the thing. She sets the rifle for bullets, which do less damage than the ion beam but are more accurate at long distances.

If the beast is not coming closer, she returns the goggles to her eyes and carries the rifle at the ready, safety on and pointed down.

Just in case she spots anything else worth knowing about it.

Rereading the character creation notes on Malichi's animal compnaion, the default status of the animal is that it is an extra. He can take the Beast Master edge again when he advances and turn it into a wild card.

One of his character creation Hero's Journey rolls gave him the following: He’s traveled far and wide, and he knows a lot about the world that could come in handy. Your character gains a +2 on any Common Knowledge rolls related to geography and understanding the people and places of North America. He also gains a +2 on Survival and Networking checks in North America.

I'll make a survival roll to see if he knows anything about this tigator.

Agate loans her magic imaging goggles to Malachi who studies the creature as well.
