Sigurd isn't certain he would want to join the guard. The request has come up a few times, of course. He's trained with the soldiers before, they are decent. But they never leave enough time to pray. And Captain Zheng's intelligence escapes Sigurd- some of his plans never made much sense.

But enough of that. Besides they will need help dealing with the infested trees outside.

Burned corpse... a cursed sign of battle that shouldn't be taking place within the town.

The tengu frowns at the likely answer to Sigurd's question.

It appears we are all far from unharmed and a little recovery time is in order.

He walks over to the wall by where the keys were found and leans back on it, groaning slightly and holding one side of his torso in pain.

Vekka has two minor healing potions beyond what those trained in medicine can do -- but we should start there.

He will also take the opportunity to recharge spellstrike outside of the encounter.

She knows the Constable won't ever think of her favorably, but if she's kind to the rest of them, they might return the favor the next time Zheng Peng tosses her into one of these cages. "Now, let's see what we can do for you poor souls. Oh dear! Guys, It looks like all the guards are one stubbed toe away from collapse. Treating them well enough to make it back to Granny Hu's will take some time." Healing tools in hand, she begins treating the Constable first, lest he have any reason to claim that she was deliberately being mean to him (or whatever excuse he would come up with to make him look good and her look bad). "Hold still, now."

(Implying that the opposite will be true if he doesn't.) She moves on to the next guard. (Clockwise from the Constable on the map.)

While the party takes an hour and a half (!) to rest and recover, they make the following discoveries about the rest of the building:

⬤) There was torture and murder - about half of the imperial guard are missing, killed (corpses mutilated and in other rooms), or maimed. The cells were a holding space for future victims.
⬤) The door next to Sato is the Armory, partially raided, but with enough crossbows, bolts, daggers, clubs, and saps to arm everyone in the room.
⬤) The trees seem unable to open the door, but they are all congregating by the door the PCs came in from, taken root.
⬤) The guards were taken completely off-guard by the jinkins and hummingbirds, as well as another squadron of animated objects (a "butcher's apron" and an "army of knives and cleavers"). They have been locked in their cell since the previous midnight, when all the shenanigans started going down, unaware of the situation outside.
⬤) They are unsure if the other jinkins / hummingbirds / cutlery are intending to return or not...

Additional Treasure:

In addition to these mundane items, the supplies here include four lesser frost vials, a cold iron dagger, a cold iron buckler, a silver shortsword, and a +1 spear.


"Zheng Peng" Human Constable of Willowshore

Zheng Peng removes himself from Auntie Wu's care defiantly. But, as he hears about the situation outside - and especially the party's having already met with and impressed his auntie Granny Hu , he shifts from open hostility to passive aggressive truckling.

"We are now sufficiently armed and prepared to defend the town, having been hoodwinked by those viscous fey. Lucky they struck when we were most vulnerable, else we would have been an insurmountable force!" he seems to overestimate his power, or at least, explain away his failure... in any case, he asks "Where will you go now?"

Anyone may attempt a single check to Make an Impression against Zheng Peng to improve his attitude towards you and the party!

And, his question stands: where next?

He lowers his head and speaks in a somber tone to Peng.
"Not sure if you heard, sir, but Hai-Er Ha was murdered by jinkins at the Eastern Gate. I'm sorry to be the bearer of such terrible news."

At the mention of the missing manor, Kazuki turns to Peng.

I know an hour and a half is a long time, but a successful rescue mission requires bringing them all back in one piece. Pity I couldn't heal Zheng & guard #1. Presumably Sato could try once their hour of immunity to Treat Wounds is up. Or we could hang around for another 20 minutes while she tries again.

The manor is weird, sure, but I care more about people than that building. Auntie Wu keeps her opinion to herself as she tends to the wounded.

All this talk about killing the trees... Ohhhh, if only I knew of a way to save them! But without knowing the source of the corruption, even the druid agrees that they have to be eliminated before they spread it or do damage to other living things.

Lan lights a torch and will drop it down in the middle of the trees. I assume the torch can be lit outside of initiative, but dropping it would trigger initiative, so Lan is sitting on the edge. If someone else is going to do something similar (such as casting light), Lan will stay back a little.

Lan drops his torch as he is grabbed by the tree. I put a torch icon on the ground. It should give bright light 20' around, then dim light another 20'.

I believe Lan's AC should actually be 16 - fatigued and frightened both give status penalties, so they shouldn't stack. But for roleplaying purposes, I think this is great and will accept the hit.
