Damn interesting! I didn't know that samurai had such weapons at all. Thanks.
There's also the tachi sword:

Ruling that a failure!
Bladed weapons have, generally speaking, been more relevant later then people think.
Lets have some trivia:
1: In which war did the last Cavalry vs Cavalry engagement with sabres happen?
World war 2, A polish Cavalry unit pulled of a charge on a German infantry unit, figuring that being as close as possible to the Germans was a great idea in light of German superiority in artillery and air support. German Cavalry also showed up, and found out the hard way that fighting with sabres, because you had about 10 hours of training with it, against people with at least 10 times as much training, as well as superior horsemanship, is a really bad idea.
This engagement was a bit of an exception, but cavalry clashes with bladed weapons were fairly common in the Russian civil war from 1918 to 1922 as well.
2: Which World war 2 armies used personal armor?
The IJA and the Red army. Which is relatively interesting because neither of these armies were notable for caring all that much about force protection otherwise.
Sapper and assault pioneer units of the Red army had essentially breast plates to protect them from Shrapnel, certain melee attacks and indirectly from gunfire. The vast majority of rifles and pistols would have went straight through these breastplates, but if you see someone with a breastplate, you typically dont aim at it. If you dont aim at the center of mass, you are a lot more likely to miss.
There is also a psycholigcal issue when you fight someone up close who is clearly better equipped for it then you are.

The price is an in character date with someone normally appearing in act 4.
You have been warned :).

Departure from the AP as written:
--The AP starts you in a fairly specific position, with relatively few actually viable paths. I dont really like this all that much.
--Instead, you have the grey garrison itself (the main target, where the wardstone is), the cultist hideouts mentioned in the notes, as well as several resistance hotspots Sahala will soon inform you off.
--You have a total of 7 possible locations to hit, as well as the grey garrison itself.
--I am billing you 6 hours of travel time for each location you are hitting.
--You could plausibly hit all of them, although that will reduces how much time you have to hit the grey garrison.
--Hiring others makes the fight at the garrison easier, hitting cultist encampents generates loot.
--You will level up to 4 after resolving 4 of the 7 possible subquests
--You can in theory bumrush the grey garrison, I dont recommend that.

1: In which war did the last Cavalry vs Cavalry engagement with sabres happen?
That would be WW2, I think it was the Turkish army and The free league Arabs, so some such.
answer:
2: Which World war 2 armies used personal armor?
Well Body Armor is Flack armor, so just about everyone, If your talking anti-explosive Armor, for Bomb disposal just about everyone. I think The USSR airforce has armor plate for the old open biplanes. If you talking full sword and spear armor have a look at the African regiments the Gurmens drummed up?
So I think its all down to the armor type

Arrius Voralius Constantine |

Sabre vs Sabre:
My guess is the Russian Cossacks vs. the Germans.
Armor:
My guess is again the Russians but no idea which unit(s).
Fun fact on armor vs. guns:
Although you might think even early guns spelled the end of armor, it didn't. There was a special, aired here on public TV, about the Greenwich Armour and if it could withstand a shot from a period firearm.
The TV series 'Nova' and the episode is 'Secrets of the Shining Knight'

> Is there a map to look at?
This is some kind of non-Euclidean geometry. If I understood GM correctly, we always have 6 hours from any place to any place. Oh, this is an abyssal distortion of space-time ))

Liliyashanina |

You can currently travel to essentially any place, after you solve 4 places you level up, you are on an uncertain timer.
And yes, I want to give you actual choices on where to go, the normal map doesnt exactly give that.

Yartak "Woodensword" |

Just to be sure.
Some of us revere/work for Nocticula, I believe. Some of us don't, right? I mean, we're not, at least knowingly, working for her, right?
And this should be the Nocticula before redemption, yeah?

Liliyashanina |

Nocticula is currently Schrödingers Demonlord/Deity and is kind of both at the same time, because "Why not both" is absolutely what would imho be her answer.
You are not knowingly working for Nocticula, only Love kind of is, or thinks she is, and explicitly for the redeemed version.
Various demons have various views on the matter. The majority opinion is split between "The redeemer queen thing is a pragmatic lure" and "They Abyss sucks, lets do what Gorrum once did and move to the Maelstrom/Elysium!", mixed with some "I kind of want to keep my favorite mortals!".
Crusader views on Nocticula are between "Thankfully we arent at war with the big boned bat b%+%~ or it would be worse" and "All demon Lord are evil, DEUS VULT!".
Love ran into Anevia (spy point women of the Eagle watch of Kenabres), who is pretty pragmatic and in line with tacit cooperation, on the principle that its probably better to have Nocticula inside the tent pissing out then outside the tent pissing in.
Even Anevia would prefer a "dont ask dont tell" policy.

Sahala Love |

Yep, as GM said. The idea of my character is partially taken from a specific NPC from the 100 issue of Paizo AP. It was an expanded book (much thicker than usual) with NPCs for each of the AP's that came out before. So if it suddenly seems to someone that "the misunderstood preacher of the redeemed Nocticula right in Mendev" is too much, then keep in mind that the idea is from Paizo .))
And at the moment my character and her connection just serves as a tool for plot development, as I see ))

Yartak "Woodensword" |

I'm fine with that. Yartak hates demons (that was the background excuse to be here) but he might respect a demon with willpower strong enough to be redeemed. Or partially so.
Which leads me to ask... How can she be both? I mean, how can you have two different alignments without one of them being fake? She's either changed or not, right?

Liliyashanina |

Mechanically, Nocticula is doing something regarding her alignment that actually works RAW. And which is also available to players.
As to what is actually going on, she has a set of motivations, which are funnily enough the same for either being a demon lord or a deity.
They are also not neccessarily what Sahala thinks they are.

Arrius Voralius Constantine |

Apologies for the late posting. It has been a rough week. I have been fighting a sinus issue and having to prepare for this weekend's work on top of my usual work week.
It sounds like your work is evil. Perhaps smite it?

Just an FYI: I've never played this beyond the 'opening scene' and the very first encounter so I'm not familiar with many of the references you guys are posting. Not a problem it's just that I may ask someone to clarify since I've never played (basically) or read the AP.
To answer your question I have read the 2nd edition 'Lost Omens World Guide', I do know why Nocticula is doing what she'd doing.

Targis of House Fal |

Sure Love may be a demon-worshipping freakazoid, but she's our demon-worshipping freakazoid!
All joking aside, Nocticula looks like a saint compared to Deskari, Pazuzu, or even Lamashtu. Beggars can't be choosers when it comes to unlikely allies, so Targis is happy to overlook it for the time being. (And once we all become fast friends, he'll look over it for the sake of camaraderie, he isn't some paladin narc, no offense intended to Arrius)

Here we just need to remember that CE Nocticula is the same embodiment of evil as any other Demon Lord. Succubi only look "interesting", but in fact they are no different from vroks, glabrezu and others. The same cruelty, thirst for destruction and zero empathy. And btw she's the queen of not only succubi, but also shadow demons...
CN Nocticula that's another matter. But at the time of this adventure, she is still CE, albeit with certain motives for improvement (by the way, a Deity is more than a Demon Lord, so even from a practical point of view, what she does is profitable and logical).
I got carried away with PF1e in 2015, and pretty quickly came across a lore of Nocticula, after which she became one of my favorite characters (so much so that I even got a tattoo with her about 4-5 years later, see my main profile for anyone interested). And the most interesting thing then was the intrigue: is she really going to change, or is this some kind of cunning plot to seduce some God to assasinate as well?
With such a reversal of the question, it was especially interesting to play as a cultist of her Future Redeemed Incarnation, when you, as a player, know how much it is not accurate. This gave drama to everything that was happening.
I just shared my thoughts and my vision of my character. You and I now know what the future holds for Nocticula, but when I started playing I didn't know that, and Sahala Love doesn't know either, she only believes (and maybe sometimes doubts? who knows...)

GM Fiat:
Succubi are often have considerably degrees of empathy, which is generally a requirement to be an effective infiltrator or manipulator.
Some just dont particularly care about what their prey thinks or feels, some think that "eh, getting killed by me is at least fun, and the mortal enjoys his last minutes, would he rather get savaged by a Vrock?".
Some are outright Sadists.
The average Succubus views the average mortal in the way someone who is really into meat views a cow. Something to be exploited, milked and eaten.
Some Succubi look at some mortals (if these mortals are powerful), and have a vision of not a cow but a big armored Auroch they control trampling over their rivals, which is doubly hilarious if their rivals are awarded the humilation of being bested by mortals.
"I mean, losing to someone who cant teleport at will, doesnt have DR, cant change his shape whenever he wants or can turn ethereal on a whim? The humiliation haha! 10/10 would profane gift the Paladin again!"
Secrecy level purple Sting
We have observed a certain switch in the infiltration practices of Agents of the Lady in Shadow.
Any infiltrator risks "going native", meaning that he or she subconciously adopts moral or legal precepts of the community he or she is infiltrating. Many spy organizations, particularly of the demonic kind with their access to cheap and frequent teleportating, regularly recall infiltrators to ascertain that the infiltrator does not go native.
Nocticulan Succubi used to be recalled to the Abyss with a degree of frequency, in part to prevent instances of "going native", yet this practice has been considerably reduced in the last century, with a particularly marked reduction 70 years ago in the context of Baphomets entry into the worldwound war.
Under interrogation, agents of the lady in shadow speculated that the value of greater long term infiltration exceeds the risk of going native, yet there is a also possibility that going native, so to speak, is a bug not a feature.
Nocticula does adopt a laissez faire policy concerning her followers, as long as they do not act against her interests. Specifically, this includes those who worship her as "Redeemer queen", it is assessed that she essentially gives no expletives about how and as what she worshipped, as long as she is worshipped.

Sahala Love |

Yep. My point was that the goal of the vrok, glabrezu and succubus is the same: maximum destruction. This is the essence of the demonic race. Just different methods, but with the same desired result.

Sapphire Aurora |

Saph is LN not because she is balanced between good and evil, it's the fact that good and evil have no meaning to her, she does not act from such things, She is a construct with an artificial soul. She is near a perfect sociopath as you can get.

It works for me. I do have to log into my Google Drive but that's not a problem. Is there a way you can set up a slide with our tokens so we can just copy them over to a new map as needed?
A note: Constantine probably isn't on the map yet but I placed his token there so I had it on the map in the 'starting area.'
Yartak "Woodensword" |

I can't seem able to properly manage the map from the phone. I'm fine with that if you are, I'll just ask anyone to move me (because I post from the phone 90% of the time). Just don't let me touch anything, because every time I do I end up screwing something.

Not that it matters here, but please keep in mind Targis's bodyguard grants a +4 bonus to AC instead of a mere +2. Gonna keep looking to see how I can boost it beyond order of the staff, because I am not a dragon, but I'm glad the sacrifice is well armored!
On another note, how many times do you think we'll run into this mutant? Should we try and get him to fight with us at this point, or are we too evil for pet NPCs?

Liliyashanina |

NGL, I was planning on having him offed, or him escaping and turning up in act 4 as a half marrilith drummer. But that nat 1 clearly changes things :).
You can totally try and redeem him further.
The party isnt exactly acting evil so far, and its wrath of he morally pragmatic, not wrath of the wicked :).

Liliyashanina |

Concerning saving throws, I will roll for players if the result of the roll determines the rest of the actions that the other side takes, players get to roll otherwise.
Targis is currently paralyzed within CDG range of 3 different enemies, 2 of them scythe bearing!

Everthing fine? To recap, priest got hold person of on Targis, one cultist attempt to CDG him, the Succubus disarmed him before that happened. Targis is still held.

Quick question for the technically competent: Why do some of the Google Slides require people to be logged into Google Drive and others don't? Is it the GM/creator that sets those conditions?

Liliyashanina |

I have no idea, there is a setting for "allow access to anyone with the link", which i do use.

Liliyashanina |

Co-Belligerent means for her "currently fighting the same enemy without actually being allies".

Liliyashanina |

This is the first more serious combat (realistic probability of player death), do you like it so far?
I try to increase the number of "fair" decisions to make for players, and I think Targis definitly got some mileage out of it.

Yartak "Woodensword" |

Gore and bloodshed! Yay!
Though honestly I'm having a hard time telling who's attacking who. Which might probably sharply replicate how a real life skirmish look like, so fine with that. I'll get used to your GMing style. Just bear with me if I seem a bit lost sometimes.
