That's a ton of great information--I love the image of you questing after print copies! These days I usually assign everything by pdf. A lot of it wouldn't be possible without the efforts that unsung heroes have put into digitization and distribution (I do try to keep it to the public domain).
Novels have so much more space for development that I much prefer them in my own reading and scholarship, with a few exceptions, and usually they are exceptions of form rather than content. Character suffers in short forms for sheer lack of spacetime.
I'll read Jimber Jaw and will let you know what I think.
The author being told a story by a trustworthy informant trope is so great. The writer having just one step of displacement is liberating and adds so much complexity.
I remembered after reading your description that I've at least listened to audiobooks of the first couple John Carter novels--but that was a period when I was consuming a lot of material by audio, too much, really. I hadn't yet really learned how to retain it (taking notes!). It's odd to find tracks (in two senses) that I've already been down, but have forgotten.
One of my main goals for course is to have my students experience the good and the bad of the pulpy roots of genres that have touched them all, and which have been life-defining for some of them, as they have for me. The stereotypes of race/country/class and gender etc are part of the story, and they ought to know it and face it. Very, very few authors of pulp escaped those pitfalls. Fortunately, most of them are ready for that. Some aren't, though. I start them off with W. E. B. Du Bois' 1921 apocalyptic sci-fi story "The Comet," and, well, it's intense and it hurts. Opens up room to talk about race and gender in the teens/20s/30s, both how bad it was and how people were trying to change things. Gertrude Barrows Bennett and C. L. Moore are good for woman-authored pulp perspectives. I'd be guilty of malpractice if I didn't teach Clark Ashton Smith, H. P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, etc.--but they do need context and framing. A delicate operation that is sometimes daunting, but always worth it.
Thanks so much again! My wife just got home, so I'm off for now--will let this settle and maybe have more to say/ask/report.

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

I’ll post in a few hours (later tonight my time). Sorry for any hold up.

Dorian 'Grey' |

Easy does it. We are in no hurry, just had time yesterday.

Hi y'all, I've been invited to join you in this adventure to try out and learnt eh PF2e rules. I'm only barely familiar with them at this point, but I'm ready to learn.
If you'll have me, I guess the best starting point is character creation. So let me know what the group needs and I'll be happy to fill the role.

Leialoha of the Sugalo |
Hey djdust, welcome!
I was following your 'Testing the waters' recruitment and went and spied on you home page. All three comments tickled me, I loved the warning and totally agree with your 'Game about heroes' comment. Since you posted that you're an artist (which NM seems to be famous for) what medium do you prefer.
Oh and as to your question, we have a dwarf druid, a half elf rogue, a half elf swashbuckler and a human (soon to be Fey, it's a long story) witch. I would lean toward a tanky cleric or a Fighter type who can do a little medicine. But since this is my first PF 2 game, I'm not the person to ask, I'm just the person who likes to talk.
Hmmm retrospectively, I should have answered the question you should have asked, Play what you will have the most fun with.

Dorian 'Grey' |

Welcome DjDust! Everyone here is learning as they go. And doing rather well, I may add!
I recommend using Core only for your initial PF2e character. As you can see, though. We do have a bit outside of Core going, so whatever floats your boat.
I am extremely versed in the rules and can help answer any questions that arise.
I don't expect you to read the entire Thread, but on its initial pages, I posted helpful links for character creation.
I am being lazy and directing you to those if needed...lol.
I feel like bases are covered, so play what inspires you.
My few initial posts in Gameplay can give you the basics of our story also.
This has been a fun group, so excited to include you!

Dorian 'Grey' |

Sansaárë is in the must of creating a new profile, since her other two(!) are not allowing her access!
We just need to draw up her new Alias now....

djdust |

Well here is a character sheet. Thanks Pathbuilder!
A cleric that can stand up in a fight, I think :p We'll see how he plays out.
Leialoha, I am primarily a painter.

Leialoha of the Sugalo |
LOL, just Leo, it's much easier :)
Leialoha, I am primarily a painter.
Nice! oil? acrylic? watercolor? Have anything displayed on-line?
I was a fine art's major in college, senior project was in non-representation using oil on small boards (8"x12"). I like larger canvases, but the project on the small board was a nice learning experience. I have space for a studio, but not the motivation presently, so nothing on display anywhere anymore.

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

Welcome, djdust. I tried accessing the link to your cleric character and it said I needed to get access. Can you please change the privacy setting or I'll ask to be granted access.

Dorian 'Grey' |

@DjDust my initial PF2e character was a Cleric. Age of Ashes was my first AP for PF2e. We just completed it a few weeks ago.
Ditto Nyswyn's request.
@Leo you are just awesome!

djdust |

oh, and oils, mostly. I've been doing some small works, acrylic ink on paper recently. I've also done some mural work here and there. Was just in a group show up in Taos recently. Looking around for gallery representation, but I'd like to build up more inventory as well. I have a three month old baby at home, so time is sparse. I'm also a Clinical Counselor and Art Therapist, so I get to make art with people at work sometimes.

Dorian 'Grey' |

I will do an introduction post later after work, if you are ready?
Any questions?
EDIT After your Alias is ready, of course...lol. Helps.

I've DMed for dust, I've been DM'd by dust, but we've never partied together before!
I've got to get to NM and especially Taos someday...

Dorian 'Grey' |

At your own pace and pleasure, DjDust. We are a bit casual 'bout here...hehe.
Any questions? I knew it! You read the CRB again.

Julril Zummish |

Here is my alias for Julril
one mechanical question, on the character sheet generated by Pathbuilder, there is a blank Special Feat listed under Ancestry Feats and Abilities. Not sure what that is or how to make a selection. Maybe if anyone else used Pathbuilder you may know.
setting/story question, I figure Julril is returning to Otari after serving abroad in some Absalom military campaign. That's all I've mustered so far for a backstory. How's that sound GM?

Dorian 'Grey' |

I have never used Pathbuilder, but your Profile Crunch looks good.
Back from defeating The Tyant?
I will post in a bit. Not certain if you are caught up, or need a recap?

Tannakin Skinker |

Hero points are a thing I always forget about.
They are rerolls that you are awarded when you do something heroic. Not to be hoarded, but spent gloriously.
Which is easier if you remember that you have them.

Dorian 'Grey' |

@Tannakin don't forget that you have Hero Points.
@Julril what Tannakin said! You start with 1.
Hero Points
Otari is a small town outside of Absalom the big city. You all grew up in Otari (except Leo). You have volunteered to investigate the stealing of fish wares from local tavern.
It's as Leo says, you are down in its basement (Think Baldur's Gate).
You having only arrived back into town have been asked to check on the volunteered Heroes and to bring them lunch. Because Heroes need to eat!
Also, let me know what pic you want for your Token on Roll20 (for maps)?
Roll20 link
Tannakin, Airi and Ness are all childhood friends. You could easily be the sisters big brother back from war.
@Parrot how do I deactivated alias' from Campaign?
@Julril Warpriest grants a bonus Feat Deadly Simplicity. Would that be the missing Feat/Ability from Pathbuilder?

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

Tannakin, Airi and Ness are all childhood friends. You could easily be the sisters big brother back from war.
Ness, being one with nature and all (likes talking to plants, the land, rivers etc) may have butted heads now and then with Julril depending on how much of a righteous zealot he was (how strong his devotion to Iomedae is). Over the earlier years of knowing one another, it could have been a playful ribbing between them, with Ness being the more stubborn in that she believes she has the right of it - revering nature and all her abundance. ;) The war may have changed Julril, so it may take Ness a beat or two to find her jesting footing with him. Both being healers has been their connection in the past and may bring them back to being their usual bantering/good natured disputing friends. :)

Julril Zummish |

@GM that feat only applies if the deity's favored weapon is simple, which the longsword is not.
@Ness I have Julril pegged as NG, and plants and rivers and things aren't necessarily evil. I think we can get along.
I also have his age down as 20, so brother he may be, but not older. However, war has changed him, and the Julril that shows up may not be the same as you knew as a youth.

Julril Zummish |

I'm having trouble getting Roll20 to work. It seems I already have an account, but I'm not able to recover or change my password apparently :/
I'll continue working on it, but just FYI.
Ok, nvm, I figured out my password :D
but, maybe I need to be authorized to join the game?

Tannakin Skinker |

@Parrot how do I deactivated alias' from Campaign?
Lol no clue!

Dorian 'Grey' |

I see that you joined roll20. I made you a sheet if you wanted to use it.
I have my weekly SoT game at the moment, so I will post in morning.

Dorian 'Grey' wrote:Lol no clue!

Do you mean remove an alias from active characters list? If so, you go to your Campaign tab, DG, and click the edit button. Scroll down and you should see your active players list and unclick the check mark next to the alias/aliases you wish to deactivate and then click ‘save’ and that should work. You can also remove a character alias from the active characters list following the same instruction.

Dorian 'Grey' |

@Ness Thank you!
@Tannakin hahahaha!
@Jubril Also choose your Exploration Mode. I defaulted you to Search for now.
Map Updated!

Dorian 'Grey' |

@Leo just waiting for your acknowledgment of Jubril's entrance, I believe.
@Jubril once acknowledged, you will have 3 Actions for your Turn. I placed an Actions link in Gameplay for reference.

Julril Zummish |

Another mechanics question.
I see I'll have to take a feat to gain access to domain spells, but under Iomedae's info there is a list of 'cleric's spells'. Anyone know what that means? Are those just suggested spells?

Dorian 'Grey' |

Those spells are added to your list if you wanted to prep them.

Dorian 'Grey' |

This isn't Rappan Athuk....or is it...wahahaha!
To be fair, I have never TPKed a group with a Mermaid Fountain before. Wish me luck!
Speaking of...

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

DG, I’ll post Ness’ Round 3 actions in a few hours (later tonight for me). Just a little busy at the moment. Sorry for the hold up.

Julril Zummish |

Sorry for all the questions, I'm learnding!
GM, what's your take on this?
Under Battle Medicine it says "Requirements You are holding healer's tools, or you are wearing them and have a hand free"
But, under Healer's Tools it says "Hands 2".
Would Julril be able to use the Battle Medicine Feat with just one hand free? I'd rather do that than burn a Heal spell.
