After getting delayed in California in my brothers wifiless (and wifeless) house, we have made it to Virginia; he's reunited with his wife, and I'm reunited with wifi.
Ready when you all are!

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

Still sick, but now I've got internet. I am ready to post (although I may not always be timely at present as exhaustion + illness doesn't make for much energy or motivation).

Dorian 'Grey' |

Sansaárë is having problems logging on Paizo. We work all day today so will try to get her on tonight.

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

I took a spill over the weekend and busted my face and both thumbs up. This is on top of the never ending virus and eye situations.
I’ll try to post this afternoon. Sorry, guys. I’m cursed or something.

Dorian 'Grey' |

Poor Ness! We are so sorry! Get well!
On a lighter side, we are now officially Floridians!

Dorian 'Grey' |

My days havve varied from week to week. My hours are 930am-830am 2 or 3 times a week. Sundays only open afternoon so 51/2 hours.
The rest fills in for 40. I hate it.

Dorian 'Grey' |

Everyone has Exploration mode as Search, so I "roll" any Perception checks as needed.
Makes it less cumbersome while...well...exploring...lol.
Proceed at will!

Dorian 'Grey' |

I will be traveling this week. Posting may not happen for that time. Apologize but a family emergency.

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

My cat’s seriously injured and can’t walk on his own. I’m his nurse (carrying, lifting, medicating him) until his surgery next week. I won’t be back on the boards until next week. Sorry about all this personal upheaval. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Dorian 'Grey' |

Completely understand, Ness. Our furr boys are our world too.
So, we are moving back to Michigan. I am already up here looking for a new homestead and a new job, while Sansaárë and our boys are still in Florida.
Sansaárë also cannot log into Paizo for some reason even though we set up a new account and password. As soon as this whirlwind of activity calms, I shall endeavor to try to fix it.
Posting will be slow so apologies. I really like this group, so please be patient.

Leialoha of the Sugalo |
Yikes, Nyswyn, I hope your cat gets feeling better. We've dealt with sick animals and it's emotionally draining for everyone.
Dorian, welcome back north! I hope the job situation returns to 'better'
On your wife's account did you clear out the cookies. A couple of times last year Paizo changed stuff and we had to go through and clear out the cookies, maybe that's the cause of the consternation...

Dorian 'Grey' |

I will suggest it to her, but mine works fine, so still at a loss.
It's a bit chilly in the morning up here...lol.

Leialoha of the Sugalo |
The farthest south I've lived was the southern tip of Indiana, which is actually more south than one would think. But I was a baby and I don't remember it. Then we moved to north central Wisconsin. So yeah, grew up in the 'chilly' bits. Central Ohio seems balmy some days.
Apologies Leo! No cannons here....
Well there should be, we could mount it on Ambrose. I believe I did mean canon. Spell check doesn't help much with such things. I'm cool with him touching the wind one, he was near it.

This game sure has players with serious stuff going on!
Best to Ness, Dorian, Airi!
...best to Leo, too, for good measure.
One of the great things about pbp is that it doesn't go stale.

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

DG, I'll make an in character posting tomorrow. You've probably seen my message on the other game we're both in, but I'll mention it here, too.
My RL is in full upheaval and it's not going to change much over this next month. My posting will be slow/sporadic at best, however since this game runs a little more relaxed/slower in pace and I enjoy playing Ness alongside you all, I will try to make posts and continue on when I'm able to. If you haven't seen a post from me in more than two days, then please feel free to bot Ness in combat situations (only if this arrangement is acceptable to GM and players alike).
I can't continue on with my faster games which I've now withdrawn from, however I do wish to keep my toes dipped into my more relaxed games as I have a better chance of participating and playing my characters as the pressure isn't as much. I hope this is okay with you all and if isn't - I understand.
Kind Regards,
Ness.

Dorian 'Grey' |

I am absolutely certain that we all will pull through this time of troubles.
We are extremely busy here on this end, but this too shall pass.
Starting new job today also and still looking for a home to bring family up.

Thank you!
That was a fun and enjoyable series of posts! Thank everyone!

Dorian 'Grey' |

I apologize. I am currently working 3am to noon shift, while still searching for a home.
I will catch up on all my games this weekend.
Thank you for your patience.

Tannakin Skinker |

I am going somewhere! Will be in the Hoh Rainforest until Monday.
Good luck getting life sorted, DG!
See you all when I get back!

Dorian 'Grey' |

Found a place! Driving to Florida to get my family on the 10th! Excited!
I do hope everyone is doing well.

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

Excellent news re finding a place to live. Good luck with the relocation of the fam, DG. Safe driving.
I'm still going through the wars health wise (going to see a doc again tomorrow).

Dorian 'Grey' |

Thank you! We are ver6 excited to get our family back together. These 6 weeks have been tougher than the first 6 weeks of breaking my ankles truth be told. And that sucked...lol.
We are really looking forward to normalizing our life just a bit. These last 6+ months have been traumatic, testing and truthful.
We will be stronger for it. We had an experience living in Florida which we probably would not have otherwise. We got to live with my parents for a time while they are in their twilight years. We lived, worked, played as Florida's for a time. I will treasure those experiences and remember them fondly for the opportunity.
I want to thank this group for your kindness, patience and playfulness.
Back to business:
@Ness. I will approve your usage of a Hero Point for this fine showing of ingenuity.
There is a Feat for that, but Cleric only (unless there is another way that Iam unaware. Happens because I have been a bit busy lately to catch up on new material. )
Well played, Ness!

Dorian 'Grey' |

I will be traveling Friday through next week. I may be a bit less active during that time.
Thanks!

Dorian 'Grey' |

We should have internet tomorrow, although the new place needs everything, so still may be a bit of time yet.
Thank you for your patience.

Dorian 'Grey' |

Now that we are all back in Michigan, our hours should be 630am to 330pm, so much more manageable.
We have a lot to do, though, making this new apartment our home!

Tannakin Skinker |

All best to the two of you! Moving is such a bear. Glad your hours are more reasonable.
@Ness: hope everything is going well for you!

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

Good luck with settling into the new place, DG.
@Tannakin: There's been a new complication with my health, but I'm working through it with the help of my doctor. Thanks for checking in with me. :)

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

I'm cat sitting a kitten and my almost 2 year old cat hates her (with COVID he hasn't had much chance for socialisation, so his skills are lacking). So, I'm having to keep the cats separated in the house and catering to both their physical and emotional needs. It's crazy! And, tiring business. LOL I'll post when I'm able to this weekend. Sorry for the hold up!

Dorian 'Grey' |

No worries, Ness. Glad thi gs are looking better
.
Our new homestead is coming along. Our cats have already stated that they own the place...lol.
Getting our new sofa and loveseat delivered today! Folding chairs are not quite enough.

Hello Everyone!
I hope today finds you healthy, happy and hopeful.
I understand that we all have had some bumps and bruises, broken bones and been blue.
I really enjoy this Table, so just reaching out for a comforting hand on your shoulder to say,
It will be OK. We have friends and family and our fur babies and gaming. It will be alright.
Happy Sunday morning over easy!

Leialoha of the Sugalo |
Hey DG! Man, bumps and bruises, my mom fell and broke her arm Wednesday night, so I need to help her with everything right now. No big deal in the light of everything. So not checking the boards as much, probably only fifteen times a day now.
Anyway, thanks for the Happy Sunday, I was just sort of waiting for the scout like people to post, since Leo is following safely in the rear.

Tannakin Skinker |

For me, its the good stuff that's keeping my posts slow--a new school year!
I'm at the University of Washington in the English department, where I mostly teach intro writing classes.
I was given free rein to teach whatever I wanted in one class, so I'm doing a course with a first half on pulp fiction sci-fi/fantasy/weird tales from the early 20th century. Then, the second half will be bringing what we learn from literary history into the present by relating those themes to modern examples of fantasy/sci-fi/the weird. I think I'll have them play some RPGs in part two, maybe even Pathfinder because it's open-source and I like to keep costs low for the students. Or maybe a dip into DnD 1e before showing them a modern RPG, since one of the themes of the class is development.
Off to lesson plan!

Dorian 'Grey' |

Hello All!
With our Druidess perhaps on a sabbatical, I am considering recruiting a 5th player, so we may continue on and not be down one for the interim. Obviously, our Nyswyn will be still available (GMnpc?) so she can jump in whenever.
What does the Table think? I really want to see this game progress. It is to learn PF2e and appreciate it for its differences to PF1e and its ingenuity.
As this game is for new players to PF2e, I will only consider such for our Table.
I may have someone in mind suddenly, but will await your input.

I’m around and still wishing to play. I hope that’s alright? I was checking the boards and only showed up one in game post and now there’s 6 as I was waiting to see when everyone was back. Sorry for making you think I’ve disappeared or have lost interest in playing.

Tannakin Skinker |

With the way this game has slowed down, I didn't notice that Ness was especially absent. I'm going a few days between checks these days myself.
I'm ok with proceeding at a pace that matches whatever the currently-most-irl-stressed player needs.
Also not opposed to a 5th player, though! More/merrier.
@Leo, do you have a favorite Burroughs short story or one you think would be fun to show students? I'm trying to go for breadth more than depth at this point in the quarter, but even with that I don't have much Burroughs on the lists... partly because other than The Land That Time Forgot I'm not sure I've read a lot. The reading list never stops growing.

Dorian 'Grey' |

I am so happy to have you all! Airi is still having problems, but we will continue as is if us 5 are ready.
Good grammar there...lol. Only had a sip of coffee, Parrot...haha!

Nyswyn Greenseyn |

DG, if you wish to bring in a fifth player, I'm not opposed to the idea either.

Hmmmm, So my favorite character was 'John Carter of Mars' I was terribly disappointed with the movie; Carter, a 'southern' gentleman who was honest, loyal and forthright, was turned into a self-centered rogue. Ok, I'll stop whining now.
Obviously, Burroughs most well-known work was Tarzan, but after reading the first twelve of the twenty-four books, the stories start to repeat. Oddly I really liked one of his first stories, which wasn't printed until he became famous. 'The outlaw of Torn.' But that probably has to do more with my age at the time and the medieval semi-historical setting.
What makes this harder, he wasn't known for his 'short stories.' Pretty much all I read was novels. By the time I graduated high school I had more than sixty. Yeah, at one point in time it became a quest to find in print copies. This was the 70's so very different from today :)
I wasn't familiar with any short stories, so I spent most of the morning looking for one and then reading it. I found The Resurrection of Jimber Jaw It was printed well after he was an established writer. I would recommend reading it, but I don't know if it's good enough to add to your curriculum.
It does have the repeating themes common in Burroughs work, both good and bad. The writing style is common for Burroughs, the author being told a story by someone he's come to know and trust, then telling it to us. You'll see this repeated in both Tarzan and John Carter and if I remember many others. Other common Burroughs Tropes: The noble Savage, stereotypes based on race/country/class, vague pseudo-scientific fiction (sort of a precursor to modern science fiction) and a story about a man's driving passion for a particular woman.
What it misses is any real development of characters, primary or secondary. He basically relies on the tropes that have already been established, either by himself or other writers of his day. More importantly it's missing the vibrant world building you get from his novels. Whether it's the Jungles of Africa, Mars, the Moon, or Pellucidar (hollow earth). You begin to see a little of it in the valley they 'land in' but not the full breadth you get in a Novel. What set Burroughs apart was his world building and his commitment to character ideals that helped create the tropes we see now.
What may be worth noting is the effect that he had on the writers who built upon his legacy.
"Edgar Rice Burroughs was, and is, the most influential writer, bar none, of our century." Ray Bradbury
