Tal has no idea what these things are, and a moment later, they leap out of the pit to attack the nearest targets - Tal and Peldur:

They bounce along the edge of the pit to body slam their targets.

Bibi and Peldur combine to rip and poke at one of the rubbery things. It's certainly and severely injured, but the blood and froth coming out of its mouth isn't slowing it down.

It immediately bounds AWAY from Bibi and into the corner to try and bounce Peldur into the pit:

The good news is that Peldur's breaking of the throne revealed a hidden cache. Inside you find 31 gold coins of Absalonian make, a dragon scale (which radiates magic), and a magical crossbow bolt wrapped in a fine twine.
