*Sombra |
Orla steps forward and her eyes gloss over in blackness again and she simply mutter the word, "Burn" and flames leap forth from the tiny gal's hand and blast the swarm, but unfortunately, can't also reach the troglodyte.
[dice=Burning Hands]1d4 Technically 4 since swarms take 1.5x damage from AoE damage
DC 16 Reflex for half damage
You could hit all three if you move forward an additional 5'. Since Ken'ichi moved back, you could've done the delay tango with him to wait to move forward until he moved back.
GM Mauve |
Balenar, the bard, manages to confuse the troglodyte. It looks right, then left, the forward.
"Where am I? What is this?"
Ken'ichi moves back, worried that the floor might collapse. He hopes the troglodyte or the crocodile comes forward towards him.
Kelleran smashes some more missiles into the creature. The troglodyte curses in Draconic.
Then Orla moves up. Fire bursts forth from her hands. Several spiders sizzle out of existence and the swarm is not as large as it once was.

The troglodyte, obviously confused, turns to the crocodile and screams.
"AH! MONSTER! GET IT AWAY!"
He slashes down with his flame blade on the adjacent crocodile, burning it.
The crocodile rushes away, hoping to get away from its master. It rushes up to the tengu. Double move
What's left of the spider swarm moves up towards Petro. Some manage to find their way into his armor and bite down. 2 points of damage. DC 11 Fortitude save or be poisoned.

Round 3

Balenar
Kelleran
Petro (sickened) (-4 HP)
Orla (sickened)
Troglodyte (-20 HP)
Crocodile (-2 HP)
Spider Swarm (-7 HP)
Sobra
Evelyn (sickened)
Sobra and Evelyn are up!
*Sombra |
Sombra channels arcane energy and fires an acid splash at the troglodyte (who is currently not in melee combat).
Acid Splash: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 101d3 ⇒ 1
Sombra will translate the Draconic the troglodyte is speaking.
Orla Durluwond |
Seeing the swarm still existing, Orla grits her teeth, steps forward (since Ken'ichi had stepped back, and because she weighs almost nothing by comparison) and her eyes gloss over in black again as she utters, "I said burn," and unleashes a gout of flame straight forward which catches the swarm and extends to hit the Troglodyte.
Burning hands: 1d4 ⇒ 3
DC 16 Reflex save for 1/2 damage for both targets and 1.5 times damage to the swarm
*Sombra |
Thanks to Kelleran once again, I put the template on the map for Orla's latest Burning Hands.
GM Mauve: Don't forget Balenar's action this round. :)
GM Mauve |
Thanks! Just finished a 10 hour drive.
Neither Sombra nor Evelyn can seem to hit their respective targets.
Balenar continues to sing. His voice carries throughout the room. +1 competence bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls.. The magic in his voice lulls the crocodile. Cast Daze on the crocodile.
?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
And the crocodile stops in place, mid bite. It looks around at Ken'ichi then back to its master then at the other Pathfinders.
While the bard dazes the crocodile, Kelleran blasts the troglodyte again. He screams in pain and curses in Draconic.
Then Orla blasts the swarm (and the troglodyte) with a ray of fire.
?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
The spider swarm fizzles - the remaining spiders scatter into any crevice they find. The troglodyte suffers from severe burns and some of his clothing sizzles away.

Troglodyte (-25 HP)
Crocodile (-2 HP)
Spider Swarm
Sobra
Evelyn (sickened)
Ken'ichi and Petro are up!
Petro Rendell |
Petro spits out a mouthful of bile.
Beginning to not like troglodytes at all... he says as he summons a small ball of fire and tosses it at what he assumes is the chieftain.
touch: 1d20 + 1 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 - 2 + 1 = 121d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Ken'ichi |
"Apologies, friend," Ken'ichi speaks softly to the crocodile, "but your spirit is being tainted by your master. It must be freed to be renewed." He makes a long, deep, vertical slash down at the animal.
Katana Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Slashing Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Evelyn Kellbor |
Sorry, but Daze works on humanoid victims. Crocodile aren't humanoid, as far as I can tell.^^
Rapier, IC: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 1 = 16
dmg: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4
if Evelyn is attacked by the reptilian, she tries to block the danger and counterattacks

Riposte: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 1 = 19
dmg: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 = 5
GM Mauve |
D'oh. Assume the daze was versus the troglodyte!
Ken'ichi manages to slice the crocodile. It angrily growls back at the tengu.
Then Petro flings a small ball of fire towards the troglodyte. Direct hit!
?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
?: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
But blood get's in the crocodile's eye and it flails wildly. It's master is the one that is confused and just stares blankly ahead dazed.
The swashbuckler swoops in and stabs the reptile. It was barely holding on but the rapier pokes a hole right into it's heart.

Round 4
Ken'ichi
Balenar
Kelleran
Petro (sickened) (-4 HP)
Orla (sickened)
Troglodyte (-28 HP)
Crocodile
Sombra
Evelyn (sickened)
Sombra is up!
*Sombra |
Sombra hopes the third time is the charm for Acid Splash.
Acid Splash: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 131d3 ⇒ 3
GM Mauve |
The glob of acid burns the troglodyte. It looks menacingly at Sombra.
[spoiler=Draconic]
"You're next."

Round 4
Ken'ichi
Balenar
Kelleran
Petro (sickened) (-4 HP)
Orla (sickened)
Troglodyte (-31 HP)
Crocodile
Sombra
Evelyn (sickened)
Ken'ichi, Balenar, Kelleran, Petro, and Orla are up!
Will do Balenar's turn after everyone else goes.
GM Mauve |
A single missile flies from Kelleran's wand. All seems quiet for a second as it sails right through the troglodyte's heart. The troglodyte looks up in horror before all life drains from it's face.
[b]"You'll regret this....."
The troglodyte and the crocodile lie in bloody heaps. Right by the throne is a large wooden chest. Evelyn quickly gives it a glance - not trapped. Opening it up, she finds a very finely crafted shortsword (masterwork quality), 15 cold iron shurikens, two flasks, two potions, a wand, a gem, and 247 gp in assorted coins. The troglodyte has four darts, a finely crafted scimitar (masterwork quality), and a cloak.
Feel free to roll spellcraft checks for the following: the flasks, potions, wand, and cloak.
Petro Rendell |
spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Well done, all. Any wounds that need tending to...outside of my upset stomach?Petro asks before taking a swig of water to clean out his mouth. He checks the items.
*Sombra |
Here's for the 4 items Petro didn't succeed on:
Flask
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Potion
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Wand
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Cloak
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
The gem
Appraise: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
*Sombra |
As I posted in the Discussion tab, Sombra can use his Arcanist exploits to swap out his last Color Spray for a Burning Hands and then boost that spell to CL 3 so the 3d4 +50% damage should be enough to fry the bats. We could set the encounter to be someone opens the door with Sombra on a 'ready' to cast Burning Hands when the swarm gets within range. If someone else wanted to 'ready' with an Alchemist's Fire just in case the damage roll on the Burning Hands stinks wouldn't be a bad idea.
Orla Durluwond |
Orla's out of 1st level spells from the spider swarm encounter, so at most she could try chucking a flask if we go back for that swarm.
Flask Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Potion Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Wand Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
*Sombra |
So we have 2 'free' acid flasks for use vs. the swarm of bats. I say we hit the room, kill the swarm, and see if there's any loot. Plus it helps max out the XP. :)
Orla Durluwond |
Orla can use the wand of summon monster if we want to give the swarm a target other than the group members in case we need a second round to finish them off.
*Sombra |
Petro open the door (lowest touch to-hit of the party) and Orla and someone else as acid flask throwers, Sombra on the Burning Hands, and we're good to go! :)
Kelleran Storm |
It actually does not help with the XP, as we get one for finishing the adventure (which was probably taking out the head trog and/or saving the bard.

Still new to PFS so that's good to know but I'd guess if there's any treasure/items in the room we'd lose access to it for not 'finding' it? It's a low-risk encounter and I think Petro already cooked some bats before we closed the door on them.
GM Mauve |
The bat encounter is completely optional. You wont miss out on anything on the chronicle sheet. Will set it up, but it's not required to do.
The Pathfinders decide to hunt down the bats and take them down. They head back down to the third floor.
Balenar: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Ken’ichi: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Evelyn: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Kelleran: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Orla: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18
Petro: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
*Sombra: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
bats: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Balenar starts a song. 1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls
=================
Round 1
Ken'ichi
Orla
Sombra
Kelleran
Evelyn
Petro
Balenar
bats
Everyone is up!
*Sombra |
As previously stated Sombra used his Quick Study Arcanist exploit to swap his remaining Color Spray for Burning Hands.
Sombra waits for the door to be opened and readies to cast Burning Hands that has been augmented to caster level 3 using another Arcanist Exploit Potent Magic to increase the damage of the spell.
Burning Hands: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) = 8
Since AoE damage does 50% more to swarms, the swarm would take 12 points of fire damage.
Save DC is 14.
Orla Durluwond |
Orla throws an acid flask at the swarm. One of the ones we found unless someone else needs them in which case she has one of her own.
Acid Flask vs Touch AC: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 111d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 x1.5 because swarm.
Oops! Missed that the bard song was going, so a 12 to hit touch, but I'm not sure if inspire courage works on AoE attacks?
GM Mauve |
Petro opens up the door to let everyone in.
Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
The bats are agile and most dodge out of the way of Sombra's fire blast.
Acid miss: 1d8 ⇒ 1
And Orla's flask of acid flies... short of the bats.
==============
Round 1
Ken'ichi
Orla
Sombra
Kelleran
Evelyn
Petro
Balenar
Ken'ichi, Kelleran, and Evelyn are up!
GM Mauve |
And Kelleran kills the remaining bats with a direct hit! All the bats are charred with acid.
Ken’ichi: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Evelyn: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Kelleran: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Orla: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Petro: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Sombra: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Balenar: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
The Pathfinders search the room but unfortunately don't find anything more than bat guano. Then Balenar comes in. Hidden beneath some rubble, he pulls out a potion of cure light wounds.
GM Mauve |
The Pathfinders leave the Fallen Fortress with Balenar in hand. Though he's still wobbly on his feet, everyone makes it safely back to Absalom. "Why don't we go to the Grand Lodge? I'll sponsor membership for anyone not already a Pathfinder... but looks like most of you already are. I hope we run into each other again out there. May need to take a month break to recover... I'll never get that troglodyte smell out of my nose."
Feel free to roleplay, but the game is pretty much done!
Petro Rendell |
That's a good idea. Thanks for your help, Balenar. I think the first round is on you at the lodge. And I think I might have to invest in a scrubbing brush for my nose to get rid of the smell. Or get the head priest to exorcise the smell through magic... the cleric jests.
*Sombra |
"Take it easy on the drink Petro; you're still a little green in the face from all the troglodyte stench."
