GM: Quick question, because I've run into this interpreted a couple of ways. The Bard spellcasting ability says ...

I read this to mean that when I'm casting a spell, I can play my drum one-handed and use my other hand for something else, such as wielding a weapon. Would you agree with that?

When making a Perform check, however, the musical instrument entry does indicate that it requires 2 hands. I have been flavoring this as I'm securing the drum with one hand and banging on the drum with my clan dagger that I'm holding in the other hand. This is the part a previous GM had a problem with. If needed, I'd like to keep the flavor, but say that I still need to swap my grip (use an Interact action) to make the clan dagger "battle-ready."That way the mechanics would be the same as having to draw my dagger, in terms of action economy.

I just like the idea of a dwarf using a weapon to bang on his dwarven drum. My original build had me using a light mace, before I realized the clan dagger had Versatile B.

Short explanation: Choose two Scrolls (1st Level) from the following list that you may use on this adventure. Just make sure they are on your Tradition's spell list (Arcane). These "expire" at the end of the adventure, so no need to be unnecessarily conservative with them:

Spells Training (3pts):

Burning hands, charm, fear, harm, heal, mage armor, magic fang, magic missile, magic weapon, soothe.

Long explanation forcoming!

BTW - The faction in 2E is Grand Archive, not Grand Lodge.

Long explanation:

Spoiler:

It's important to preamble that all decisions you make as a 1st level character are "soft" in that you can change them before your character reaches 2nd level. Which is the reason I am advising you suchly above: This decision will impact this scenario alone (which two scrolls you want to bring along), but you are free to consider the entire wealth of options later to make your "permanent" choice.

Most Pathfinders are able to requisition one or two items for each scenario, which they are free to use to support their health and survival, but must return to the Society if no such emergency arose as to necessitate the items' usage. That is, these items do not "rollover" between adventures.

Characters may choose these items from four different lists - a "general" list and three "specialist" lists - depending upon how they allocate their School Network resources, abstracted as three "points", to distribute between up to three Schools: Swords, Scrolls, and Spells.

I went ahead and decided for you that Inathel Gunuthelan, being the ever-studious mage, would assign all three of his "points" into the Spells School, which means that he, just before we depart on our journey to Iobarian Mishkar, will be able to leverage his standing in the School and his collegiate Network to borrow / requisition up to two Arcane Scrolls (chosen from that list) for this mission.

For the record: It's quite possible that Jolinaxus and Inathel have, say, attended the same lecture, as he too has allocated all of his "points" to the School of Spells...

Thank you very very much. You are very sweet.

So I took Burning Hands, Fear and Magic Missile scrolls.

What's the difference between scroll and spell (in the sense of picking these temporary items)?

Envoy's Alliance

If you put all 3 of your points into one of the networks, you get 2 items, not 3. But you also get a bonus Lore skill (for what it's worth ...)

If you're in the middle of an Encounter, casting from a Scroll requires an Interact action to pull out, and then you cast the spell. But it doesn't expend one of your spell slots ... and, obviously, you can pick a spell that you cannot normally cast, so it gives you some more flexibility.

For example, just one thing that occurred to me ... going into a forest that is known to burst into flames, Burning Hands may not be the best option. But if there were a spell that made you resistant to flame or something, that might be a better option given the situation.

Grand Archive

M NG Elf Wizard (Enchanter) 1 | HP: 12/12 | AC: 15 | F: +3, R: +5, W: +6 | Low-Light Vision, Perc: +4 | Speed 30ft

Wait, how can I pick a spell I can't normally cast? This link states that I have to pick from my list. Do you mean that I can use a spell that's normally in my spellbook?

As for selection, I picked spells from the list that Jolinaxus posted, which doesn't give many options. And Burning hands gives me an area attack, which I normally lack. Any suggestions?

No, when it says "the school's list of options" it means one of the three Pathfinder schools: Scrolls, Spells, or Swords. It has nothing to do with your spell list (except that you will want to pick Arcane spells, so you can cast them off the scroll).

Envoy's Alliance

Table 1 is the All-Schools Items, which are items that ANYONE can get, regardless of how where they trained. Then the next three tables show items that are specific to training in each school.

Hey just as a heads up I was busy tonight and wasn't able to get the maps ready. I should be ready tomorrow

Mistress of the Maze

So I just realized that most PBP GMs roll the players initiatives themselves. In the future I'll do that. Sorry about the last few days I think I had a stomach virus or something odd making me sick.

Envoy's Alliance

Appreciate you running this game. I'd like to give additional feedback, because, as one who appreciates the elegance of 2E's rules, what never ceases to give me greater joy, is the lengths to which they go to try to make the GM's job easier.

Rolling for Initiative in this system, if you want it to be, is now a "two-for-one" situation. Which means, you can choose to have players roll their Perception checks as their initiative scores, using that roll both to assess what the character perceives (or fails to perceive), as well as ordering a combat. Two for one, giving you half as many fiddly numbers to keep track of. Here is a specific advice for Initiative and Stealth, again dealing with fewer rolled numbers, if you get stuck trying to sort out "who sees who" in an encounter scenario with just a single rolled value per actor.

Again, not trying to tell you how to run your game - I respect the chair - just pointing out additional tools designed to make the job easier. Cheers!

Mistress of the Maze

I agree. It was less a perception check to notice and more a sense motive check. So tomorrow hopefully I'll feel better and be able to post more frequently.

Seems like so. The large amount of diplomacy high rolls enabled us to do that. It's cool that the system allows for such a thing and hope it is more common than other d20 systems.

Performance re-roll: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 = 10
