Frantino finds a vulnerability in Mozamer's last swing and takes the opportunity to step forward and bring his greatsword down on the monster's shoulder, severing his right arm!

Immediately afterward the failing Nasir boldly swings and decapitates the injured wrathspawn!

The head tumbles to the ground and the weird jaws <click> <clack> several times before ceasing to move. Mozamer's halberd clatters upon the ground, his right arm still clutching the haft.

Frantino drops to one knee for a moment, catching his breath.

"Wow. I think the town owes us a raise for saving them from the threat posed by this monster. Great teamwork, everyone, this could have turned out much differently if we'd been even one person fewer. Ayita, never let us talk you out of leaving Yazhi behind ever again!"

When he's ready, Frantino will cast detect magic and examine Mozamer, then the rest of the room.

Wow, these rolls would have sucked if the combat had dragged on another round!

Do we have enough healing to get well and push on? I think we're quite low on resources, and while this guy was probably the primary threat (I sure hope so!) we don't want to get overwhelmed by numbers elsewhere. We should be able to loot and lock this room, put the other monster bodies back in their room and lock it, and potentially no one would be the wiser if we left for a day. We just have to sneak by the training room again and get back to the well.

Frantino watches gratefully as his wounds close up. "I'm going to have to buy stock in whatever guild makes those wands, I get the feeling we're going to have to pick up a few more soon."

Wielding Mozamer's halberd could also be worth a few points of intimidation. I'm not against investigating further, but it should be a unanimous decision. We should also take a few minutes to get Yazhi, and the ring of feather fall should make it easy for one of us to hold him and jump down the well without rigging up a whole apparatus. Getting everyone back up is a different matter, although we may come across other exits out of here. There's no way that every person and monster down here comes and goes via a public well without being seen!

I vote for continuing. We murdered the room of fleshdregs with no issues. As long as we manage to work chokepoints and not get overwhelmed, we should be okay.

We are quite low on healing, though. I have one CLW left. I think Doc is out and the wand just has 7 charges left. There could be some tough critters in other places...

and I wonder if we are at all close to another level?

It is clear, even without know exactly the enchantment, that the halberd is exceedingly sharp. Far sharper than one could get with a mundane blade, sans magic.

And Nasir can tell that the chainmail the creature is wearing defended him quite well.

Detect magic shows both halberd and armor are magical.

Mozamer's pocket contains a beautiful pearl that radiates magic, as well.

In the desk drawer are several crumpled sheets of paper on which Mozamer has been keeping notes of his work to reactive the portal outside his room.

Spellcraft or Know(arcana) DC20:
(in Thassilonian) It is apparent from the writings that the intellectual problem of repairing the portal is posing difficulty for Mozamer, but nonetheless he’s had some success drawing in several fleshdregs, a hydraggon qlippoth, and even a sinspawn from various locations under Hollow Mountain. One particularly worrisome note indicates that if the source portal “in the Forges of Wrath” could be infused with more magical power before it succumbs entirely to decay, then Mozamer could potentially rebuild a larger network of portals throughout western Varisia.

Which magic item did my 25 spellcraft identify? The other rolls were likely failures, but I welcome others to do their own examinations. Unfortunately, if the pearl is what I suspect then none of us can use it, since we're all spontaneous casters. Who wants to try the armor? What about the halberd? Ayita and I both use two-handed weapons, and it wouldn't fit well with Nasir's investment in two-weapon fighting with his shield, although I have no doubt he'd be highly effective with it.

Now that I've re-read all of his abilities, Frantino will meditate for one minute and use his new Shift Focus ability to transfer three points of mental focus from his transmutation implement into his abjuration implement, although one point is lost along the way. Now he has two more mind barriers available if necessary.

Assuming it's +1 Chainmail, that would be a +1 upgrade in AC for for me, so I could use it. My character would be in no no hurry to put on the armor a demon was killed in before having it cleaned, so we should just strip it off for now nd take it with us.

You are correct that I have been investing in the 2 weapon fighting, so the halberd is not my first choice, but if neither Frantino nor Ayita want to use it, I'll roll with it for now.

I too am surprised there is not more loot. I guess we'll need to murder everyone else in her to find it...

Spellcraft DC15 to block portal]From what you know, the portal cannot be disengaged from this end. It is glowing quite low, however, so Frantino guesses it is quite depowered right now. Only sure way of blocking it is to work on it from the other end.

Yazhi is possible. Getting a dog to wear a ring and then jump into a well... would require some Animal Handling prowess. ;) And some sneaking past the previous hallways, etc.

Doc is sure that church doesn't have any wands on hand to purchase. The previous ones were unlikely gifts of the gods. So lucky of Audrahni to have such on hand. Unlikely that another is just waiting around to purchase. An idea for the future might be to commission the creation of such an item, to fight for the town and defend poor souls from evil. Doc knows the cleric of Pharasma would be open to such a request.

Unless someone else has a strong desire for it, Frantino will wield the halberd for now while carrying Mozamer's head. While Ayita climbs up the well to get Yazhi, perhaps we can take a few minutes to wash out the +2 chainmail in the water and Nasir will be comfortable putting it on.
