Another grouchy remark from Yangrit: "Oh, come on! We may as well finish searching down here before we go back up to see Mistress Koi." The giantess fish's name is spoken with a not-so-subtle sneer. "There is no use in trekking up and down the stairs multiple times; she is liable to drown us down here if we dally too long. In addition, the missing GIANT UNDEAD CARCASS has my hackles raised. Come on, you lot. We are going this way." She then stubbornly takes ten as she swims over to the door that CrocoDeluge indicated and looks back to see who's with her.

Those members of the party that decide to remain below head back into confining maze of the back passages and find themselves in a cartographium (the northeastern chamber). The water’s surface here is carpeted with maps made of silk, vellum, birch bark, and sundry other materials that have floated out of their shelves due to the flood.

Bernhard heads out into the central chamber to keep watch alone. Remind me. Does Bernard have a light?

Meanwhile, the rest of the party investigates the map chamber and the unfurled maps that sit in the water like huge lily pads in a marsh.

Maintaining his concentration, and bobbing slowly through the chest-high water (because the shelves and their remaining atlases) are thick enough to block detect magic) turns up a couple of objects with magical auras in his search.

Among the many many many lily pad maps one particularly colorful silk one done in a Tian-style portrays Tian Xia mashed into the side of Avistan to create a strange super-continent. It also has a faint magical aura.

Behind one of the back shelves, bobbing in the water, is a much smaller, but no less ornate art piece--an engraved wooden bookmark with a golden tassel. The thin plane of wood is etched with arcane designs in a vaguely Mwangi pattern. This item too boasts a faint aura as well.

Trailing along behind Deluge, Yangrit strains to keep her head above water as she is swung back and forth. Despite the less than ideal circumstances, she feels like she's done a good job searching for the scroll pieces. Still... Nothing. "Rrrrgh! Does anyone see those dad-gummed scroll pieces? If they are not here, we should move on to the next area quickly. The sooner we get this over with, the sooner we can all get dry with a cup of mulled wine." Is the water getting higher? It seems higher. Yangrit shoves her panic deep down, pulling the customary thick blanket of grouchiness up to smother it.

Similarly, after a sweep of the the cartographium both above and below water, Deluge and Yangrit don't turn up anything else that seems pertinent to their cause just some, old maps that probably wouldn't be of use to anyone.

The party finds itself in front of a closed door in the northeastern wing of the understacks, where Deluge finds a bit of the scroll the group has been searching for. No, not just floating around in paper-clogged back hall, but nailed to the door by a fancy dagger just below the waterline....

A thin waterfall drops from a grate in the ceiling fifteen feet above, creating a curtain in the doorway to this flooded room. Beyond, mounted animal heads glower from virtually every inch of every wall. Stuffed specimens also lurk beneath the dark water, their antlers, horns, and claws breaking the surface here and there like twigs in a swamp. Do you mean this bit of scroll right here? Otherwise from his current location he doesn't see anything else aside from several hundred stuffed heads.

It's actually a lot more of slog than you think. It takes 4 squares of movement for every one you would normally take if you are walking. So a double move is 3 spaces (or two if they are both diagonals). To speed things up a bit I'm going to take Bernard and Hannar's actions since I know what they are. Both double move (or otherwise move as far they can).

Yangrit looks around the room and spots the singer up on a wall standing on what looks like a metallic bull's head about 12 feet from wherever the floor is. She's a small feral-looking creature with tiny webbed hands and wild hair. Her expression seems crazed, but even crazier is her mouth. Her mouth is crammed to overfilling with an assortment of teeth that don't appear to be her own. Some of them obviously come from larger creatures and hang out of her mouth at odd angles. Many of them are pointed and look like they come from predatory animals. She smiles horribly as she sings.

Then as if they were waiting on him to get that far trio of tiny, pink, flesh-winged things, bearing a set of rusty pliers zip in from all directions toward Hannar's face.

The PCs may each roll one knowledge check for each of the described creatures and open all the spoilers that apply to their result.

Small Web-Fingered Woman - knowledge (nature) 13+:
She seems to be a strange sort of bog nixie--capricious cousins to regular nixies--aquatic fey creatures.

Small Web-Fingered Woman - knowledge (nature) 18+:
Like 'regular' nixies, bog nixies are mischievous and fickle creatures known for using their haunting songs to charm those they find interesting into spending time with them in their freshwater homes. Bog nixies however are dangerous and often end up drowning the objects of their fascination. Often both sorts transform into other forms both humanoid, and animal, to help facilitate their tricks.

Small Web-Fingered Woman - knowledge (nature) 23+:
Both types of nixies are resistant to normal weapons and mortal magic (SR). Cold iron however bypasses this protection.

+++++++++++

Diminutive Fleshy Insects - knowledge (nature) 10+:
The little winged creatures are tooth fairies. Tiny, winged fey creatures.

Diminutive Fleshy Insects - knowledge (nature) 15+:
A favorite of childhood nursery rhymes, like the scissor man who relieve thumb-suckers of their addictions, and the bed bugs that you don't want to bite, tooth fairies are of course interested, and related strongly to teeth. Specifically, they fly about at night relieving those caught unaware, or made so by their magic of their teeth. What they do with the teeth is a matter of some conjecture.

Diminutive Fleshy Insects - knowledge (nature) 20+:
The little rascal's bite contains a magical paralytic that immobilizes their prey allowing them to take their time with a victim.

Diminutive Fleshy Insects - knowledge (nature) 25+:
Like many fey, they are resistant to normal weapons--only cold iron is fully effective against them.

+++++++++++

Metal Bull's Head - knowledge (arcana) DC 18+:
The head was (at least a part of) a magical beast known as a gorgon.

He doesn't believe in 'game balance'. Gandalf always lets him pass. As a feat, he has Exotic Weapon Proficiency (beard). The city guard often question him, just because they find him so interesting. His dice bag is woven from tarrasque leather. His TPKs end game lines. His blood cures moderate wounds. He once punched a flumph. Yes, you heard me. He belongs to a prestige class whose sole requirement for entry is just being him. ♬ He is indeed, the most interesting GM in the world. ♬

The little creatures jump out of hiding among the trophies on the wall to attack Hannar with their pliers and their sharp, tiny teeth (which give the Diminutive blighters 5' reach).

Hannar Fort save DC 11: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 1d3 ⇒ 2

Two the devils use their pliers to extract two of the sorcerer's teeth.

"That's it my lovely girls! Bring me his lovely teeth!" says the small feral singer before continuing her song.

Pau double moves toward the evil woman in back of the room.

Ive got 40’ movement, but I’m not sure how far I can get towards her in this muck. Would you move me the appropriate squares, GM? Thanks.

You can get to the middle of the room for the cost of an AoO from the fairies (see map).

I guess I will delay this round, until a spot opens up so I can either attach a fairy or move toward the woman, without eating a bunch of AoOs.

I'm an alligator for crying out loud. How the heck am I supposed to protect my teeth? And what happens if I loose one and then change back? Did they cover this in Druids 304, Wild shapes? Alligators just grow new ones, so would it matter?

Feeling confident that, though he cannot protect his teeth, he can spare a few, Deluge surges forward and snaps at blue.

to hit, bite, flank: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 3 + 2 = 23
damage, bite: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

to hit, tail, flank, secondary: 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 5 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 2 - 5 = 3
damage, bite: 1d10 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

In spite of his success, Deluge realizes that he's probably of more use casting a spell and slips back out of reach in order to prepare to cast something next round.

Upon seeing the fairies descend on Hannar, Yangrit releases Deluge's tail. She sinks to the floor, kicks off, and explodes from the water to pound the pink fairy.

Unarmed Strike: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 201d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

She then treads water, gulping air so she can strike again.

She's going to miss anyway. Deep bogs give folks stuck in them cover (+4 AC). So he'd not be paralyzed and helpless for the other two. Only meaning he is only hit once.

The annoying little monsters are tougher than they look (DR). One of the blighters takes attempts to take the anger she feels over a recent alligator attack out on Yangrit, but fails to bite her hand as it zips by.

blue bite v Yangrit (cover): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 damage + sneak attack: 1d2 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 miss, this attack invites an AoO from Yangrit, as the creature has to buzz into her space

pink pliers v Hannar (tricky thief, cover, flank): 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 2 = 15 1 CHA damage + 1 bleed damage + sneak attack: 1d6 ⇒ 6 miss

purple pliers v Hannar (tricky thief, cover, flank): 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 2 = 23 1 CHA damage + 1 bleed damage + sneak attack: 1d6 ⇒ 3 hit

The most persistent of the little monsters makes off with another one of Hannar's teeth.

Bernard, Hannar, and Xusius continue sloshing across the room, seemingly disinterested in the battle taking place. All of their concentration seems focused on the halfling-sized singer perched high upon the wall.

Hannar can move the equivalent of 3 spaces if he likes (and possibly take 3 AoOs from fairies armed with pliers), however since he can defend himself from attack even in his current state of mind I leave the decision up to you as to what he does this round.

Bernard though is getting swung at by pliers on his way past.

purple pliers v Bernard (tricky thief, cover): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 1 CHA damage + 1 bleed damage miss

Conditions Deep boggy floor space. The room is dark aside from whatever light you bring with you.
