Head on over to discussion for an overly-long and mostly thought-out summation of my POV on the matter.

fly (sharp turn): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

The Albatross attempts a high speed turn and ends up slamming into a pillar. It slides down the side of the pillar into the water.

He spends a move to stand and shake himself off.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

fly (not move half speed): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

The Owl does better, and while it looks like he was about to soar off into the library, he stops short, and casts a familiar spell (color spray Will DC 14) upon Bernard. and Xusius (and Albatross).

"Taste the rainbow." snarls Owl.

Yangrit finally begins tromping up the spiral staircase. As she does, she draws her sling. After getting up partway, she she pauses to pull a cold iron bullet out of her pouch, loading it in her sling as she eyes the situation down below. Surveying the scene, she gripes to herself: "The boys just had to anger the magical creatures. Sigh. Hmm. I am running low on bullets. I should have replenished my stock. That was foolish of me!"

It looks like the waterfall runs over half of the staircase. Does that affect her movement in any way?

Yangrit Foehammer wrote:

The water on the stairs does not affect movement (nor does it on the mezzanine above as the water just runs off through the rail). It does pour down, and through the metal grill stairs making everything wet going up though. That said, stairs are normally difficult terrain, and these are no different. There are two squares of stairs to travel though. Also, the stairs go down to a subbasement too.

Funny you should ask. In a scene reminiscent of the opening of this other classic scene, Yangrit looks around a corner, and finds the unthinkable.

Yangrit:
It doesn't seem to be looking at her, rather it is looking about the back aisle of bookshelves. The creature moves about on 8 or 10 tentacles. It knocks a few books off the shelf with a couple of those tentacles both of them as thick as a man's leg. **splash splash**

It stops as if suddenly becoming aware of something. Its whole blubbery frame tenses and then water! Water pours like a great decorative fountain from what you guess must be a number of unseen sphincters(?) all over it's body... but the thing is only the size of a very fat human. Where could all the water be coming from!? As it sprays the library with water it pirouettes about on some of its tentacles while two flick upward to happily conduct the unseen orchestra that must be playing in its head.

As above, once your PC sees the creature they can attempt to identify it with a Knowledge (arcana) check, and then open all of the spoilers whose DCs they beat below.

knowledge (arcana) DC 15+:
The fish thing is a grodair, a magical, aquatic, extraplanar, beast native to the First World, and magical fishing holes in any number of children’s fairy tales.

knowledge (arcana) DC 20+:
Grodairs are intelligent aquatic creatures that carry their own water around within them. Their bodies contain extradimensional spaces that can hold near limitless amounts of water like an everfull mug or bag of holding. Like sponges they can absorb water from one place and expel it in another.

knowledge (arcana) DC 25+:
Grodairs can drown whole valleys, or expel concentrated blasts of pressurized water as a sort of defense mechanism. Often when they absorb water they will accidentally absorb other small objects as well.
