All good GM, here is the roll. And i can only move 2 squares then? Alright. Updated my position to 10 ft away.
Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Pau
|
Reflex 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Pau moves and climbs on the row of books directly underneath the owl.
Does that take one or two move actions, GM?
Deluge-Core
|
will: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Not willing to go chasing after these things trough the increasingly unfriendly water, he also casts a spell and sics a DC 17 flaming ball of fire on the albatross. Besides, they are flying and that makes it doubly awkward.
damage: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 6) = 15
spell resistance if necessary: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Xusius
|
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Xusius moves ahead and fires his wand of Magic Missile at the albatross.
Wand of Magic Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
ends turn in the entangle spell so here's the other reflex save
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Treat stepping up onto the overturned bookcase as stepping into difficult terrain.
All good GM, here is the roll. And i can only move 2 squares then?
Previous to paper-product entangle folks could move as if in a shallow bog.
Conditions the water here is deep enough to counted as a shallow bog.
Round 1 and then some! (Theme ♬)

Pau climbs up onto the table and pulling a shuriken as he did so, flings it at the owl headed creature.
Ranged attack 1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 - 1 = 6
Damage 1d2 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Hannar the Wild
|
My apologies for the delay. I did post that I would delay until end of the round, but that's 3 posts in 3 games there have been taken by the goblins.
Reflex save vs. Entangle: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Hannar growls angrily, casts a spell, and points at the Owl. A cloud of bright, golden particles erupt around the bird.
Glitterdust. Will DC=16. Probably won't work but worth a try.
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
Pau's shuriken flies straight up missing Owl.... Wait for it. Golden sparkles begins to rain down from above.
Owl will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
"AND NOW I CAN'T SEE!" hoots a wounded, and bedazzled Owl.
Conditions the water here is deep enough to counted as a shallow bog.

Will DC 14: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 2 = 25
Reflex DC 14: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 2 = 15
Includes +2 bonus from dwarves' Hardy racial trait (vs. spells and spell-like abilities)
Well, this is going to the dogs. Yangrit growls and mutters something about stupid idiots as she trudges through the sloppy water, still heading toward the metal staircase up to the mezzanine with a single-minded purpose. (What a team player!)Double move
Reflex DC 14: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 2 = 18
Looks like Yangrit is not entangled for her next turn.
Bernard St. Ivre

Bernard fires another arrow at the owl, and then moves behind Pau.
Bow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 131d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Deluge-Core

The flaming sphere bounces off him, drops into water beneath, and then goes out with a hiss.
Why did it drop into the water? It should be hovering there, right? Am i not understanding the spell or is there something else going on here?

Bernard fires another arrow at the owl, and then moves behind Pau.
Don't forget Reflex v entangle.
Why did it drop into the water? It should be hovering there, right? Am i not understanding the spell or is there something else going on here?
Head on over to discussion for an overly-long and mostly thought-out summation of my POV on the matter.
| Mr. Owl |
| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
fly (not move half speed): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
The Owl does better, and while it looks like he was about to soar off into the library, he stops short, and casts a familiar spell (color spray Will DC 14) upon Bernard. and Xusius (and Albatross).
"Taste the rainbow." snarls Owl.
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
...i forgot, i should have stood still...!
I should probably also note that Pau hadn't moved his token yet so, it's just Bernard standing there. Good luck! We're all counting on you. ;)
Conditions the water here is deep enough to counted as a shallow bog. The floor is littered with entangling paper (the green area; Reflex DC 14).

"Where did Pau go...oh well." He shoots again at the owl. He stands still.
Bow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 91d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
"Hit me baby one more time."
Yangrit Foehammer
|
Yangrit finally begins tromping up the spiral staircase. As she does, she draws her sling. After getting up partway, she she pauses to pull a cold iron bullet out of her pouch, loading it in her sling as she eyes the situation down below. Surveying the scene, she gripes to herself: "The boys just had to anger the magical creatures. Sigh. Hmm. I am running low on bullets. I should have replenished my stock. That was foolish of me!"
It looks like the waterfall runs over half of the staircase. Does that affect her movement in any way?

"Hit me baby one more time."
I did. Now where's my will save? ;)
It looks like the waterfall runs over half of the staircase. Does that affect her movement in any way?
The water on the stairs does not affect movement (nor does it on the mezzanine above as the water just runs off through the rail). It does pour down, and through the metal grill stairs making everything wet going up though. That said, stairs are normally difficult terrain, and these are no different. There are two squares of stairs to travel though. Also, the stairs go down to a subbasement too.
Yangrit Foehammer
|
So it looks like Yangrit is able to ascend to the top of the stairs (15 feet of movement due to difficult terrain from the watery floor and the 10' of stairs.)
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
Umm...how was the Owl able to fly and target a spell while blind? Just curious.
Forgot (conveniently) all about that. It was probably all part of my clever plan to see if Bernard was paying attention. Scratch those requested saves lads.
Owl will save v glitter: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 Still blind.

Xusius
|
Xusius again fires his Wand of Magic Missile at the Albatross. He has heard that a famous comedian needs them to sell at the Hollywood Bowl
Magic Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Hannar the Wild
|
Reflex vs. Entangle: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Hannar tries to move buy is entangled. He pulls out a magic wand and says..."Pew-pew"...and a small sphere of energy bursts forth and strikes the Owl.
Magic Missile vs. Owl: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Question: if the water is difficult terrain and the entangled area is difficult terrain, do they stack, (ie. 4 movement per square)?
| Mr. Owl |
Pau
|
”the two of you brought that on yourself. We might heal you, if you give us that scroll you fished out of the water and help us by telling what you know. I said might because you weirdos reacted poorly to me trying to be nice,” Pau says, almost screaming the last few words.
Bernard St. Ivre
|
Bernard lowers his bow, "I am sorry for shooting an arrow at you, Mr Owl. But my friend here is right, he was trying to be diplomatic before we really stuffed that one up! Can you tell us what is going on in this library? Why is it so flooded?"
Diplomacy, aid maybe: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
"Dang it, remember you drunken fool, don't start negotiations with - ehhh sorry i shot you! Gah!"
Pau
|
Pau looked at the scroll fragment, and rubbed his temples in frustration. He handed to one of the more clever members of the party. ”Just take it. I’m getting too old for this s$@*,” he grumbled.
Deluge-Core
|
Deluge reads it and hands it over to the next person in line.
"You know, this is like trying to figure out a prophesy. It never makes sense until after it's happened. Heck, the riddle says the sleeper made a meal of these two, but here they are, and there it is upstairs, not 'deeper'. Say, where did you first see this here sleeper and why do you call it a sleeper?"
diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Deluge's bookcase is covered in trail mix, the result of his interrupted snack and trying to cast a spell with his mouth full. He makes a rather unappealing sight even if his heart is in the right place.
Hannar the Wild
|
Glitterdust only lasts 4 rounds, so Owl should be ok soon.
"You asked us not to go up there and disturb "the big sleeper". Perhaps if you were to explain who or what "the big sleeper" is and why you think we should't, we might not."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Yangrit Foehammer
|
Eyes narrowing in suspicion, Yangrit turns around to see what else may be up on the mezzanine along with her. Is there a monster behind me.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
+2 more vs. unusual stonework
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
Funny you should ask. In a scene reminiscent of the opening of this other classic scene, Yangrit looks around a corner, and finds the unthinkable.
It stops as if suddenly becoming aware of something. Its whole blubbery frame tenses and then water! Water pours like a great decorative fountain from what you guess must be a number of unseen sphincters(?) all over it's body... but the thing is only the size of a very fat human. Where could all the water be coming from!? As it sprays the library with water it pirouettes about on some of its tentacles while two flick upward to happily conduct the unseen orchestra that must be playing in its head.
As above, once your PC sees the creature they can attempt to identify it with a Knowledge (arcana) check, and then open all of the spoilers whose DCs they beat below.
Hannar the Wild
|
Hannar moves up the stairs to follow Yangrit.
5 "rounds" of movement from his last action.
Knowledge(Arcana)(eventually): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Hannar shares anything he may recall with the group.
Xusius
|
Xusius shrugs stoically and heads for the stairs which he had been trying to reach prior to the slight battle breaking out. Once there he considers what he might know of the beast before him.
Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
He reads the scroll fragment on the way.
"Interesting. Zese ees a beast I have never eencountered before. I wonder what eet ees."
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
Folks who head up to the mezzanine can open Yangrit's spoilers and links as if they are Yangrit above.
Deluge-Core
|
Deluge lags behind and waits for Xusius to clear the stairs before moving from his dry perch. Once Xusius gets up high enough, Deluge heads over and begins his climb right behind him, making sure all his goodies are protected from the water falling on him from above.
