Each of the scroll cases contains a single weathered bamboo scroll covered in a magic-user's arcane writing.
The scrolls are magic circle against chaos (from the bird case), slow (from the fish case), and arcane sight (from the dragon case).

The alligator shows no interest in the scrolls once he finds out that they are not fragments of the 'poem'. With a snarl of irritation he starts swimming into the northwest corridor.

Ah, irony....
Assuming Deluge has some way of overcoming the near-perfect darkness of the under-archive's back halls. He can quickly get a feel for the place's cramped, maze-like structure.

Pau follows along with the group. He thought it was quite clever to let the crocodile take the lead, what with the place being all flooded and watery. ”Don’t suppose you can turn the rest of us into gators too, can you? That’d be quite the experience,” Pay calls out as he moves through the flooded room to be with the group.

swim: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Sputtering madly, Yangrit falls behind as she flails and almost drowns. She's furious with herself, and vows to take swimming lessons when this is over. If someone is so kind, she'll latch onto them and let them tow her around, glowering like a thundercloud in the darkness.

Xusius refreshes the Light cantrip on his Wand of Magic Missile and sets out to do some more looking around. He also cast Mage Armor on himself. He moves over to the top entrance that leads to the East and looks in.

two to both Xulsius and Yangrit. I believe only our Druid can use the wand.

He does have low light vision but if it is THAT dark he will have to wait for the others before going to far. Heck, even if he COULD see he is not stupid enough to explore any further than a stone's throw from the others.
And use it he would, provided the GM allows an alligator to use a wand.
Deluge takes pity on the poor dwarf and gives her a tow, slapping him with his tail a few times until she gets a clue and hangs on. Though since the tail is used for swimming, it is a rough ride. Hmmm. Maybe that wasn't pity?
Assuming the group joined her and explored the west. Otherwise you are going to have to cover that all back up again :)
Then at Xusius' insistence, he heads towards the eastern opening.

Remember, you can Take 10 when not under immediate undo stress.

Only if you could turn into a talking alligator with thumbs. Wands usually have an activation phrase. ;)
And the irony hasn't anything to do with the darkness. :)

Yangrit chugs the potion offered her by Hannar. "Many thanks!"
Potion of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
She then pulls out another from her pack and downs it, though it's a little difficult as she is being whacked with an alligator's tail as she does so.
Potion of CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
"All right, fine! Stop splashing me, you big lug!" It's hard to tell if Yangrit's grousing is good-natured or otherwise. Nevertheless, she latches onto Deluge's gator tail with a firm grip--and immediately regrets her decision. The crotchety dwarf is flung back and forth as Deluge's tail propels him forward with powerful sideways strokes. It's almost like being on a theme park ride. A really bad theme park ride. (I almost want to make her roll a Fortitude save to keep from barfing, but I guess she hasn't been doing this long enough yet.)

Xusius gladly accepts the potions from Hannar and drinks one immediately.

Worst potions ever.... Except that very last one. Where did you get these things from Yangrit? ;)

Well, we have a lot of doors to choose from and I'm a fan of getting door choices over quickly, so how about we go through the open door to the southeast, where I've placed Deluge and his tagalong dwarf friend.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The party enters the flooded chamber, which seems to be a storage place for books pertaining to genealogy.
However there is something odd about the room. Off in the corner behind the door the party discovers a patch of darkness that does not seem to fade regardless of how close they bring their lights.
Now what do you do?

![]() |

”Well, extra darkness can’t be a good thing. Anyone cast a such shiny light kind of spell,” Pau asks glumly, not expecting anything good to happen.

![]() |

Xusius moves up and peers into the corridor, seeing an open door.

![]() |

Deluge just growls at Pau and waits for the Dwarf to see if she can see into the darkness. If not, he will explore the other parts of the room and avoid the dark patch for now.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Can those with Darkvision see into the darkness?Yes, Yangrit can. There just seem to be more recessed shelves of books, folios, and scrolls back in what she can see (by bobbing) is a deep cramped, postmodern alcove.
Xusius moves up and peers into the corridor, seeing an open door.
Xusius's light spell does not seem to effect it in any way.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

After concentrating on the area for a few moments Xusius can affirm that the darkness is indeed magical in nature and gives off a moderately powerful aura.
Detect magic combined with spellcraft, and/or detect magic and knowledge (arcana) can give you more information.
This darkness doesn't seem to block Yangrit's vision, but she's special like that. ;)

![]() |

Yangrit growls in resignation. "Rrrrgh. All right, fine! I'll check it out. Deluge, get me closer. Please." It seems she would rather not use that magic word, but is making a point to anyway.
Swim: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Hahaha! This is hilarious. It wouldn't do for her to suddenly do well, now would it? So out of character!

”Hmmm, I always figured that dwarves would be buoyant? Susppose I was wrong about that one,” Pau cracks, watching the dwarf basically drown while checking out the super darkness.

![]() |

The 'gator obliges and maneuvers the dwarf so that she, and Deluge's tail, are in close proximity with the darkness.
And if Pau thinks that dwarfs are light, he ought to try carrying one! Unfortunately Deluge can't say that, so he just thinks it.

The darkness remains--well, annoyingly dark.
Yangrit can just pull herself through the area (it's really narrow), or take 10 on her swim checks when not being attacked by giant undead bird things. The water is calm.
”Hmmm, I always figured that dwarves would be buoyant? Susppose I was wrong about that one,” Pau cracks, watching the dwarf basically drown while checking out the super darkness.
I know and they are always portrayed as being so sleek, and aquadynamic. Dwarves: the dolphins of the land.

"Thank you Yangrit for checking out the darkness.", says Hannar, "Besides, not many creatures actually prefer the taste of Dwarves anyways.", he says with a grin.

Xusius studies the darkened area a bit using his spellcraft knowledge and Detect Magic.
The effect is certainly magical, but Xusius feels he would need more time to study it to give a more definitive answer. Also, because he can not see into the magical darkness he cannot pinpoint what its focus is, or what exactly is causing it.

Taking 10 on swimming
Yangrit grips Deluge's tail hard for a moment, centering herself through sheer force of will. A thought occurs to her. She pulls her rope off her sodden pack and ties one end to Deluge's tail and one around her torso. Only then, slowly and deliberately, does she swim (not well, but adequately) into the darkness. All her senses are as alert as she can make them, knowing full well that this is likely a trap.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

The World's Most Interesting GM |

By trial and error (basically by Yangrit pulling things off the shelf, and people outside telling her if the magical shadow moves) she finds the origin of the darkness, a big heavy tome whose cover looks, and feels like cured flesh.
The tome is written in some language that Yangrit does not recognize. The darkness effect extends in a 15-foot-radius around the book.
What would folks like to do?

![]() |

"Yangrit, can you tell the source of the darkness, perhaps you can cover it with something? If not, grab whatever it is you think is interesting and get out of there."
He goes and extends his hand into the darkness, to give Yangrit someone to pass off to.

![]() |

”Can that old ugly fish monster upstairs see in the dark? If so, maybe we could throw a cloak over it and take it upstairs and let it read it,” Pau suggested.

![]() |

Deluge immediately recognizes the book, or at least by its description. Unfortunately he is unable to ask for it. And he's not quite ready to turn human again and get all smelly and wet like everyone else. Amaaaazzziiing how comfortable this place is as an alligator! And what does it matter if the leader of his faction wants the stupid book. Briefly Deluge considers eating it and defecating it later, but who knows what an artifact will do to ones digestion? And then there is the change back to human to consider. VERY doubtful the book would be accommodating.
In the end he just mentally marks the one that ends up with the book.

Grumbling in her usual manner, Yangrit replies to the guys: "Alll riight. I will stick it in my pack, though I doubt that will limit the field of darkness. If it does not, perhaps I should trail behind the group so all of you can see." She tugs the book off the shelf and stuffs it into her soggy pack, which she then attempts to balance on top of her head.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Grumbling in her usual manner, Yangrit replies to the guys: "Alll-"
As she begins to speak, a sound like a terror stricken crowd of dozens washes over and around her. She tries again, and again is cut off by the cacophony. Even breathing hard seems to cause the air to be filled with a susurration of a room filled with distressed people.

![]() |

Uh oh, the paracountess didn't mention anything about that. Time for the monk to take a vow of silence, I'm thinking.

![]() |

What the--?! On a hunch, Yangrit replaces the book gently and backs away from it slowly. Eeeeasyy there... What a hypersensitive book.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

It seems that the book responds to whatever noise its bearer makes. Alone on the shelf it just sits there--darkly.

![]() |

By the way, GM: when Yangrit put the book in her pack for that brief moment or two, did the darkness still extend in a 15' radius, or did it wink out?
Glowering deeply in the darkness, Yangrit calls out to the group: "If I bring this along with us, I have to be silent the whole time. Frankly, that will be tiresome at best, as swimming involves considerable splashing, at least for me. Regardless, it may be a red herring. My suggestion is to leave it here for now. We know where it is, and what it is. If the giant fish up there recognizes it from our description, we can come back and get it quickly enough. What do you think?" That last sentence was clearly tacked on in a begrudging effort to be a team player. It's not that Yangrit doesn't appreciate *having* a team; rather, she's thoroughly peeved at being the worst swimmer and the only one who can see through this darkness (and therefore the only one who could reasonably carry this book and have to deal with its obvious curse). She'd much rather abandon this book of inconvenience.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

By the way, GM: when Yangrit put the book in her pack for that brief moment or two, did the darkness still extend in a 15' radius, or did it wink out?
The darkness works like light in that de-illuminates a radius, and that if you cover it in something that is light-proof it has no effect on the area beyond the covering, so when she put it in her bag it got much brighter in the area.

Heading back out into main central chamber the party immediately becomes aware of two things. One the noise of a lot of briny sea water running down the stairs leading up, and two the fact that the dead, giant, undead bird is missing.
Continue heading up?

Deluge is unable to speak, but he makes his thoughts plain as he drags Yangrit towards the door to the northeast as they pass it, but backtracks and follows the others as they head back towards the main room.

Xusius objects to going back up.
"While finding zis book ees all good, we still have not found ze elf we must find. He must still be down here zomewhere."

The World's Most Interesting GM |

So are we splitting the party? Who stays? Who goes? And where? Obviously you need someone who speaks Sylvan to communicate with Mistress Koi if you plan on talking to her, and what does Deluge want in the northeastern chamber?
