Is there a way for Xavier to intimidate or otherwise use his position as a priest to cow the attacker into leaving him alone??

Sure, I think having a priest yelling at him could indeed Intimidate him. You need to roll a Dramatic Opposed Skill Roll using your Intimidate Skill versus the Cool Skill of the Brawler. If you succeed, the brawler would meekly retreat. If you fail, then you’ll need to roll a Weapon Skill roll as your defense against the attack Weapon Skill roll of your opponent. Go ahead and use Brawler 1’s rolls above. The first would be his cool roll. You need to roll using your Intimidate Skill and seeing how many Success Levels you have. If you have better than a +2 then the fight against that opponent would be over. If you don’t beat that SL, then roll again and compare to your Weapon Skill to his second roll (his attack roll).

Combat 4 - Valghaz vs Brawler 4. Brawler 4 is a little fat respectable looking burgher yelling "Long live the Jungfreuds!"

Brawler 4 Attack WS: 1d100 ⇒ 58 A 58 is a failure with a SL of -2
Brawler 4 Defend WS: 1d100 ⇒ 73 A 73 is a failure with a SL of -4

[dice=Valghaz Defend WS 50]1d100-50 SL 1

[dice=Valghaz Attack WS 50 with advantage 10]1d100-60 SL -3

Damage Unarmed: SL negative 1 + Unarmed 0 + SB 3 = 2 damage? Or is is -3 + 3 for 0 damage? Either way I think it is advantage +20 now.

This wasn’t Valghaz’s first brawl. He easily sidestepped the man’s punch and shoved him away. Hard. This caused the burgher to crash into a nearby wall. Pulling out his shovel he yelled ”Eh! Stop this nonsense! I don’t know who the fook the Jungfreuds are and I don’t care! Just leave me be.”

Going through these steps 1 at a time as an example of combat for everyone.

[ooc]Valghaz has a Melee (basic) skill of 50. His defense roll was 40 which is a success with a SL of +1. His +1 is better than his opponent’s SL of -2 so Valghaz successfully defended himself. Since he won the Combat check for his defense he has gained a Advantage of +1 for his subsequent combat rolls.

Valghaz now attacks. Again his Melee skill is 50 but now he has an Advantage of +1 so needs to roll a 60 or less to succeed. He rolls a 99 which is a failure with a SL of -3. His opponent’s defense was even worse though with an SL of -4 so even the attack did not succeed it still causes damage.

first determines what body part of his opponent he hit, He determines that by reversing the numbers of his attack roll, Of course a 99 reversed is still a 99 and thus Valghaz has hit the Brawler in the head.

Valghaz then determines damage. Hitting with a fist causes damage of your strength bonus plus zero (fist as a weapon doesn’t add any extra damage unlike a sword or ax, etc) plus the difference in the SL’s minus the armor of the opponent and minus the toughness of the opponent. Valghaz has a strength of 39 which gives a +3 strength bonus and his opponent has a toughness of 30 which gives a +3 toughness bonus and no armor. The difference in the SL’s was 1 and the strength and toughness bonuses cancel out so after all of that Valghaz manages to very slightly wound his opponent with 1 point of damage.

Valghaz did win another opposed combat check and now has an Advantage +2

Luckily for Valghaz the Pulling the Punches rule is in effect for this contest as he rolled a 99 on a failed attack roll which normally would have been a Critical Fumble and caused Valghaz to actually hurt himself. One hilarious possibility is that he could somehow manage to hit himself in the face causing a stunned condition...kind of a 3 stooges move

Landolf didn't actually win an opposed check vs the woman, so I'm assuming he doesn't have any advantage. He can't act this turn, so no rolling I guess. I assume he's lost sight of that halfling?

Correct, you didn’t win an opposed combat check so do not gain advantage. However, your opponent lost the +1 Advantage she had. The rules are that if you do not accrue additional Advantage during a round, you lose 1 point of Advantage that you have. Since she only had 1 point, she now has no advantage. Landolf made if through Round 1 in good shape after being surprised. And, yes Landolf has lost track of the Halfling, Halfling’s in general being smart enough to stay away from Big People fights

You ‘fail’ the Dodge test but your score was SL 0 and your opponent’s was -1 so his attack was bad enough that, even though not gracefully, you did Dodge the attack. That’s also a win in an opposed combat check so you gain +1 Advantage for the next round. Finally, you managed to partially disengage from your opponent and get closer to being out of the riot (2 more wins on Dodging will have you free).

Combat 3 - Ruprecht vs Brawler 3. Brawler 3 is a teen-age boy who is obviously trying to show off in front of his girlfriend. This time Roll 1 is the attack roll and Roll 2 is the defense roll since Brawler 3 has a higher initiative result.

Brawler 3 Attack WS Roll: 1d100 ⇒ 41 A 41 is a failure with a SL of -1
Brawler 3 Defend WS Roll: 1d100 ⇒ 13A 13 is a success with a SL of +2

Defence WS:38: 1d100 ⇒ 6 That's a SL +3, so he easily defends...and gets Advantage +1

The boy comes in clumsily, fists flailing. Ruprecht, having been trained in pugilistics by some fine fighters ( his father belived , quite rightly, that a man had to be able to deal with the inevitable fisticuffs in life ), merely raised his elbows and deflected the blows.

"Come now, my boy!" he exclaimed, "Surely you can see you're out matched!"

Attack WS:38 + 10=48: 1d100 ⇒ 45 SL 0, a miss and a loss of advantage , i think...

Ruprecht's fist pops out in a solid jab, but the boy jerks his head back just in time.

"Ah! Well done, boy!" Ruprecht declares, noticing the lass looking on with concern.

"Come now, " Ruprecht says lowly, so only the boy can hear, maneuvering so that the boy was between himself and the girl,"Let's give your lass a good show! Pretend to hit me and I'll go down and you can leave the victor!"

Charm:48: 1d100 ⇒ 3

One rule I overlooked in Round 1 that's important is:
Automatic Failure and Success
No matter how skilled or talented a character is, there is always a chance of failure. Equally, there is always a chance of success in WFRP, no matter the odds stacked against you.
If you roll 96–00 on any Test, it is always a failure. A failure occurs even if your modified characteristic or skill is 96 or higher. Similarly, if you roll 01–05 on a Test, it is always a success. A success occurs even if your modified characteristic or skill is less
than 01–05.
We'll use that rule from Round 2 onward

Round 2 Begins

The fighting has upended and utterly smashed the pie sellers cart and its contents have spilled all around you turning a portion of the Marktplatz into a slick sea. You all find that keeping your footing is becoming difficult.

Pie smeared cobblestone acts as Difficult Terrain, causing a −10 penalty to all relevant Tests for 4 Rounds (up to Round 5!). However, a few of the brightly coloured Cavalcade acrobats have no trouble flipping about the muck and punching folks

Bruised soldiers in red and blue are screaming impotently for order and threatening to arrest everyone, Cavalcade entertainers are lashing out in fury, Jungfreud supporters with blue and silver armbands are throwing punches to left and right. It’s a chaotic mess!

Round 2 Initiative

Combat Order (Initiative Rolled)
Xavier (44) vs The Performer
Landolf (42) vs The Lady The term lady is used loosely
Brawlers (39)
Ruprecht (31) vs The Teenager
Valghaz (26) vs The Fat Burgher

Xavier vs the performer Xavier has Advantage of +1 as the Round begins. The performer mocks Xavier's difficulty with the slick footing by gracefully performing a pirouette right before throwing his punch.
Performers defense roll (either Melee Skill or Cool depending on what Xavier does: 1d100 ⇒ 48 A fail with an SL of -1
Performers attack roll: 1d100 ⇒ 89 A fail with an SL of -5

Landolf vs the lady The lady has to add +10 to her rolls to reflect the suddenly pie slicked ground The lady is screaming incoherently with rage, spittle flying in all directions from her mouth. "ARGHARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!"
The lady's defense roll: 1d100 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 Success with an SL of +2...if the lady wins this roll, she would have Advantage +1
The lady's attack roll: 1d100 + 10 ⇒ (29) + 10 = 39 Failure with an SL of 0 if the lady did not have Advantage after the first test, with Advantage the roll becomes a success with an SL of +1

Ruprecht vs the teenager The teenager has to add +10 to his rolls to reflect the suddenly pie slicked ground. The teenager tells his girlfriend "Watch this sweetheart, I'm going to flatten this fancy boy"
the teen's attack roll: 1d100 + 10 ⇒ (61) + 10 = 71 A failure with an SL of -4
the teen's defense roll: 1d100 ⇒ 14 I am assuming that Ruprecht will use the Charm attempt roll that he made previously as his action. If Ruprecht wants to do something else that's fine. Just ignore the text about the Charm roll. He could not use the Charm roll in Round 1 because you can only do 1 action on your turn. As a reminder, the 3 he rolled is an Automatic Success A success with an SL of +2 but Ruprecht's Charm check was a better success with an SL of +3. The teen nods his head as Ruprecht's words sink in and begins to play act his attack.

Valghaz vs the burgher The burgher has to add +10 to his rolls to reflect the suddenly pie slicked ground. Valghaz has Advantage +2
The burgher touches his lip and finds it bloody from Valghaz's glancing blow. He yells "How dare you make me bleed, you Altdorf scum pig!"
the burgher's attack roll: 1d100 + 10 ⇒ (71) + 10 = 81 A failure with an SL of -5
the burgher's defense roll: 1d100 + 10 ⇒ (85) + 10 = 95 A ridiculously bad failure with an SL of -6
It is rapidly becoming obvious that the fat little burgher has no idea of how to brawl

Your charm would be opposed by her cool skill. Luckily for the GM, these brawlers have both Melee (basic) and Cool skills of 30 so the generic 'defense' roll is used to defend against either physical or psychological attacks. Which is a very long winded way that she did gain Advantage +1 for defeating your charm.

With Advantage +1, her Melee (basic) skill is effectively 40 so she did succeed with her attack with an SL of +1. That success gives her Advantage +2 for the next round. Her attack roll was a 29 which is a 92 when reversed which is a hit to the right leg. Damage is Strength Bonus+0(for attacking without a weapon)+SL difference-armor-Toughness Bonus.

Damage=3+0+5-0-3=5 wounds (ouch)

The crazed townswoman completely ignores Landolf's attempt to charm her and in fact it actually seems to make her angrier than before. Hands clench as she makes a fist. Still screaming in rage, "ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" she feints a punch and instead kicks Landolf as hard as she can in the right knee laughing maniacally as the kick connects "HAAAAHAAAAHAAAAHAAAAA!!!"

Your melee skill is 50 and you have Advantage of +3 and are fighting on difficult terrain so you effective target to hit is 70 or less (50+30-100). You rolled a 27 for your attack which is a success with an SL of +5 (difference between the 7 (from the 70 target) and 2 (from the roll of 27). You actually did 12 points of damage with the blow. The fat little burgher started combat with 12 points of Wounds that he could take. Round 1 he was hit for 1 point of damage and Round 2 he took 12 points of damage. He's gained the prone condition and if not healed in the next 3 rounds will lose consciousness

Valghaz's blow with his shovel literally knocks his opponent off his feet and the fat man soars backwards about 5 feet in the air before crashing against a market stand 'CRASHHHH' which shatters and leaves the burgher on his back gasping for air and clinging to life.

The Intimidate effective target was 41 (31 skill + 10 for Advantage +1). Roll of 50 is a failure with SL -1. That ties the cool roll of the performer so now we compare the base skills with the most skillful winning the test. Xavier has an Intimidate skill of 31 and the performer has a Cool skill of 30 so Xavier wins the opposed test, Intimidates his opponent and now has Advantage +2

The now slightly intimidated performer tries to punch Xavier while Xavier dodges. For being slightly intimidated, the performer has a -10 to his attack skill. The performer rolls a 89 against his effective melee skill of 20 which is a big fail (-6 SL). Xavier rolls a 25 against his effective Dodge skill of 50 (base skill of 40 + Advantage +2 - 10 for difficult terrain). Rolling a 25 Xavier succeeds with an SL of +3. Xavier has dodged another attack and now has Advantage +3

The priest's obvious religious fervor and his short but powerful speech are beginning to effect the costumed performer. Though thoroughly enraged, the performer has always been a godly man and is beginning to have second thoughts about attacking a priest. "Hurting a priest has to be a really bad sin, Sigmar be praised" the man thinks as he weakly throws a punch at the holy man.

Waiting to confirm before I finish the round.

Your Charm skill is 41. There's no modifier. The ground being slippery doesn't hurt you ability to Charm, just to Melee. I should have used more precise language earlier. You rolled a 54 which is a failure with SL of -1 (basically 4-5) and she had a SL of -3 trying to ignore your Charm. Her Cool skill is 30 and she was +10 for having Advantage +1. So her effective skill was 40 but she rolled a 70. She failed the test and loses her Advantage and you won a test and gained +1 Advantage for your next combat check.

The very angry lady is a bit mollified by your words, and secretly quite proud of her kick. She still tries to hit you but is now sort of uninterested and thinking maybe it's time to go home and start dinner. Her attack is at -20 now for being uninterested, -10 for difficult terrain so her effective melee skill is 0. Her roll was 37 which is a failure with an SL of -3

The tie-breaker is whoever (or maybe whomever) has the higher skill wins. Your charm of 48 is better than his cool of 30 so Ruprecht wins the contest.

Adelaida will go after the Brawlers and before Ruprecht in subsequent Combat rounds of the "Great Marketplatz Riot" of '512.

As part of Adelaida's trappings she has a soldiers uniform. Which uniform is it? It could be an Altdorf uniform or a Jungfreud uniform but those both come with issues. An Altdorf soldier is going to be hated by most townfolk and will be part of some unit stationed in Ubersreik so likely not wandering around in an adventuring party. Wearing a Jungfreud uniform would get you arrested and hung by the Altdorf troops. Wearing any other uniform would free you of those issues.

The authoritative voice actually causes a part of the riot to stop for a few heartbeats and then it breaks out again. It's clearly going to take something more dramatic to stop the fighting or it will just have to burn itself out when everything and everyone in the 'Platz has been smashed to some degree.

The Altdorf soldiers that were not caught in the riot have redeployed to contain it before it spreads to the rest of the city.

Xavier's words have the opposite of the intended effect making the performer angrier than before. Luckily for Xavier, the performer is so enraged that he swings too hard, slips on a pie and falls flat on his face allowing Xavier to escape the conflict unscathed. Xavier finds himself standing in a island of calm surrounded on all sides by rioting. They are several smashed stalls in easy reach.

You may conduct a Dramatic Perception Test if want to search the debris around you. The difficulty is average (+20) so the target for success is Xavier's Perception Skill test + 20 (i.e., 59).

Landolf easily blocks the strike by The Lady leaving the two combatants breathing heavily and staring at each other from a couple of feet apart.

If Landolf can successfully charm The Lady in the next round, she will not attack and instead head for home where she will brag to her neighbors about kicking the butt of a seaman. The story will grow over the years to become her defeating an entire pirate crew and saving the Marketplatz. That story will provide many, many years of free drinks at 'The Sick Pony' her neighborhood tavern.

At the end of Round 3:

Xavier is standing in the midst of shattered stalls in an island of calm in the fighting.

Landolf is confronting The Lady trying to figure out his next move and trying to ignore the pain in his right knee.

Adelaida is just out of view but ready to enter the fray.

Ruprecht is picking himself up out of the mud, crushed pies and market stall debris. He can either find another combatant to engage or move to join the priest of Verena in the remnants of the shattered stalls.

Valghaz continues to face off with The Nephew who's nose appears to be broken and is now leaking blood all over the place. The dwarfs shovel prowess has caused space to open around him and The Nephew as no one else is moronic enough to confront a furious dwarf wielding a shovel.

Hearing someone in the crowd refer to him as ‘the honorable dawi’ made Valghaz smile. Damn straight. He thought.

Ruprecht and Xavier have found calm in the heart of the riot. Everyplace in the Marketplatz outside the smashed stalls in the center is violence and destruction. They are joined by a minstrel who greets them with a nod and then strikes up a lively fiddle tune which anyone a taste for music will recognize as The Flight of the Angry Griffon, a popular martial song. "Interesting day, huh fellows?," he says as he plays.

The rioters back away from Valghaz, his impressive display of prowess making them seek less dangerous brawling partners. The lull in the fight gives Valghaz a chance to take a breath and see what else is happening in the Marketplatz. He finds his attention drawn to a shirtless man covered in elaborate tattoos with flame motifs and as he watches the man inhales and breaths a long gout of flame at several assailants. One catches on fire and runs, screaming. The grinning fire-breather suddenly lurches and falls to the street with a quarrel buried in his throat.
