No respect for the ladies, I see? Answer me, how can I protect yourself from your own folly? Or did you carefully picked me because I was a woman wearing Altdorf's uniform?

[dice=Punch Defense (40)]1d100 SL 1? (margin is 8 total with pie malus: 40-22-10=8)
[dice=Punch Attack, (40)]1d100 SL-1? (margin 40-39-10=-9)

Adelaida's training kick in, and she assumes a fighting stance, despite the slippery ground. She has shoulder lenght black hair, longer than a usual soldier, and if she has a little smile on her lips, her eyes are cold as steel, and focused on the current "threat".

It looks like Adelaida has a Melee (basic) skill of 50. Weapon Skill is 45 and she has taken 5 advances in Melee (byasic). So, 50 or less is Adelaida's normal target number but there is a -10 modifier because of the pieful underfooting so at the start of melee her target is 40.

Adelaida's defense roll was 22 versus her target of 40. That's a success because she rolled less than/equal to her target. Her success level is SL +2 (just compare the 10's numbers not the entire number to figure out SL so it's simply 4 minus 2). The attacker had a SL of -3 so Adelaida had no problem in blocking the punch. By winning that Combat test Adelaida has gained Advantage +1 (every point of Advantage is worth a +10).
Adelaida's attack roll was 49 versus her target of 50 (not 40 because of her Advantage +1) so her attack was a success with a SL of +1 (5 minus 4). Her opponent had an SL of -4 so she successfully hit your opponent. Because Adelaida won this combat test she now has Advantage +2.
With the successful attack, you need to identify body part hit and damage done. Body part hit is determined by reversing the number of your attack roll. You rolled 49 which becomes a hit at location 94 which according to the reference table is a right leg hit.
Damage is calculated as your strength bonus + weapon damage + SL difference - opponent's toughness bonus - armor class at body part hit. Adelaida has a strength of 35 so her strength bonus is 3, her weapon is her fist which has a damage of +0, the SL difference was 5, the opponent toughness bonus was 3 and the armor class was 0. Therefore 5 points of damage was done which leaves your opponent at 7 wounds (started with 12).

At the end of Round 4 only Talther and Adelaida are still engaged in Combat.

When pigs fly is suddenly not just an expression and it becomes literally true as the Strong Woman of the Cavalcade show has picked up and thrown 2 pigs into the fray. The terrified squealing pigs go charging past, sliding and scrambling along the pie-slick cobblestones.

Everyone needs to make a simple Agility test to retain their footing. Failure means you've fallen and been covered by mud, pie remains and pig slobber. Failure results in the Prone Condition

Prone
You have fallen to the ground. Your Move can only be used to stand up or crawl at half your Movement in yards. You suffer a −20 penalty to all Tests involving movement of any kind, and any opponent trying to strike you in Melee Combat gains +20 to hit you. You lose all Prone Conditions when you stand up.

That's a funny battle at least! About my melee score, I'd like a rule clarification. When I created the character, I took Melee basic as one of my three starting skills with 5 ranks. Then, using the 40 points to use in my 8 career skills, I put 10 points in Melee basic again. Do that means my total Melee bonus is +15 (putting me at 45+15=60 score) or can I only have a maximum +10 bonus for a starting character (meaning I should swap my 5 points starting skill, hope I'm clear...)

It will take 1 round of movement to regain your feet at which point you can either find another opponent to fight or start making your way from the Marketplatz

Yes please...simple agility check to avoid being knocked down. Since you’re sort of protected by the broken stalls, it’s a +10 modifier to your effective agility (or -10 to your roll depending on how you look at it).

If you avoid the rampaging swine, then roll a perception check (see below). If you’re knocked down, you take 1 round to regain your footing and see nothing going on.

End of Round 5

Xavier was knocked down by an out of control of pig and ended up in the pig slobber, mud and crushed pies. He spends the round getting back to his foot and has no idea that anything beside the riot is happening.

Landolf found out what the snotling in the famous song 'The Pig Runs Over the Snotling' must have felt like when Swineanator flattened it. Landolf spends the round standing up from the muck and has no idea that anything beside the riot is happening.

Luckily for Valghaz no other Dawi are around to see his shame of being bested by a runaway boar. The only witnesses are a bunch of Umgi. And best of all, not a single Elgi has been seen. He spends the round rising from the mud and has no idea that anything beside the riot is happening.

Talther and Adelaida find out that they seem to have real skill in pig dodging and stay upright. Even better their opponents in fisticuffs are run over by pigs leaving them unencumbered by fighting. However, neither notice anything beside the riot is happening.

Ruprecht demonstrates proficiency in the dance moves an elegant advisor would be expected to know and easily dances around the pugnacious air-propelled porcine. He spots something that's not right.

Adelaida is in uniform and is still upright and is unengaged and is close.

Talther is upright and looks to be a man used to being obeyed and is close,

Your new friend the priest is getting to his feet next to you. A few feet away there’s the dwarf along who’s been swinging a mean shovel clambering to his feet. There’s also a seaman near by getting into a standing position.

Dawi? Where did he hear learn that? Valghaz thought, looking at the man in surprise. Khazalid was supposed to be a secret language, known only to dwarfs and priests of Sigmar. Whomever that man was, he was learned. That got his attention.

”Oh?! Aye, I’ll take care of that problem for ya. Will cost ye a meal though.” Valghaz called out. The educated ones were the ones with coin, right? Regardless, he broke into a charge, his shovel held up high as if though it were a war-pick. He didn’t wait for Ruprecht to respond, lest he refuse.

Charge the Ruffians! Agility needed due to the ground? Hope not as my Ag sucks. But just in case: 1d100 - 20 ⇒ (19) - 20 = -1

Simple means that there is only success or failure, no degrees of failure.

No agility roll needed for charging

Charging
If you are not Engaged in combat already, you can use your Move to Charge. If you Charge, your Action must be a Melee Test to attack an opponent. If your opponent is at least your Move characteristic in yards away before you Charge, but within your Run range (see the Run entry in the Movement Table for how far you can move when Charging), you will also gain +1 Advantage as you barrel into your opponent.

I think Valghaz was up to Advantage +8 after round 4, lost 1 Advantage in round 5 because you did not gain additional advantage in the round but just gained 1 Advantage by charging into combat.

The knife-welding ruffians are definitely not trying to 'Pull Your Blow' so now you can go for the critical head hit :)

For simplicity's sake, Valghaz is attacking Ruffian 1

Valghaz has a melee skill of 50 and Advantage of +8 and -10 for uncertain footing. His effective target is 120 (50+80-10) and rolled 13 which is an SL of 12! Hit location is 31 which is right arm

The ruffian sees a muck covered dwarf charging at him with a shovel raised like an ax over his head and tries desperately to parry the blow. [Ruffians all have Melee Skill of 40]

Ruffian 1 Melee Skill to Parry: 1d100 ⇒ 60Failure with a SL of -2. Damage done by Valghaz is there 3+14+1-3-0 = 15 points of damage. Ruffian only has 12 wounds!Forgot +1 for shovel

Panicked at the sight of the angry dwarf, the Ruffian is unable to get his dagger up in time and is only able to watch in stunned disbelief as the enraged miner uses the edge of his shovel to take off his right arm at the shoulder. He remains standing for a split second trying to understand why blood is gushing from his shoulder before collapsing. Valghaz is now covered in the blood of his foe.

I can't very well look the other way now that I've seen that, can I?

Shaking a bit off the slop covering him aside, Landolf charges into the fray, hoping to occupy the ruffian that the dwarf didn't hit.

It looks like Landolf had 3 advantage after his last Charm check but lost one on the pig round. Unless I lost it all for failing some of those simple checks. For now I'll assume he starts with 2 advantage & gains 1 for charging. I think the pie penalty still applies?

I'll roll Melee (Basic) in case Landolf can draw his dagger while charging. If he can't, this will be a 5 higher Melee (Brawling) check. I'll omit any advantage notation on his defensive Dodge check.

Melee basic 40 to parry if needed]1d100

I may be missing rules.

Attacking the 1 armed ruffian would be +20 to hit because he’s prone and +20 for outnumbering him 2:1 and +10 for charging him. The ruffian is unable to do anything to defend him and loses consciousness when you stick him with your knife. That’s probably a blessing in disguise for him. He’ll expire next round.

Well this will help pay for the cleaning and repair of my cassock at least! he thinks as he slowly regains his feet.

You carefully search the muck and pull out 9 brass pennies

The two remaining ruffians decide that the pay for this assignment isn’t worth taking on an obviously crazy dwarf armed with a killer shovel and his henchman that stabs a man who’s going to be dead in a few seconds anyway.

”His nibs ain’t going to forget about this dwarf. Helmut was his fave,” yells one of the ruffians as he turns and runs into the crowd rapidly disappearing from view.

His partner in crime also turns to run leaving his back temporarily exposed to Landolf. Since Landolf has the Advantage his opponent may not just disengage

Landolf:
Do you wish do attack the ruffian as he move to run away?

The little girl has stopped screaming and is staring in shock at body of armless attacker. Her elderly companion quickly pulls her away from the grisly scene pausing only long enough to say, ”thank you, your efforts here will not be forgotten.”

The End of the Great Marketplatz Riot

A series of deafening staccato cracks echo across the Marktplatz. All eyes turn to a flame-haired woman holding aloft a smoking repeater pistol. The minstrel, surprised, plays a bum note and stops playing. The pigs skid by on pie-crusts and mud, before ramming into a potter’s stall with a squeal, sending clay pots everywhere. Soldiers in red and blue Altdorf uniforms, and watchmen wearing the blue and gold heraldry of Ubersreik, rush in to all sides. This abruptly brings the riot to an end. The Markplatz is now surrounded by a scores of soldiers and watchmen.

The woman then speaks, her clear voice echoing across the square. ”You are ALL under arrest!”

GM Stuff:
Landolf won't attack. He didn't intervene to kill the attackers.

More than incidentally, what do the laws say about this sort of thing? We (meaning not Landolf) just killed a dude in the market right in front of Altdorf soldiers.

You all find yourself imprisoned beneath the Watch Barracks in the Precinct district of Ubersreik. You’ve spent a crowded night with the other brawlers, all of whom are awaiting their arraignment. All weapons were confiscated with the assurance they will be returned if sentencing goes well
.
White-faced mime artists surround the party gesticulating energetically but refuse to talk. These brilliantly garbed clowns have argued for hours about the merits of various face paints; there’s a delightful Halfling girl with a long, hand-made beard named Gerlindelallen: ‘Call me Geri. Naw, I am not a Dwarf, look at the size of me hands! Far too small!’ and an old ‘mutant’ named Henroth. But not really. Henroth is a carnival player dressed as a ‘mutant’ for a play. He is covered in shimmering-gold metallic paint, now flaking and leaving little trails of glitter behind him. His right arm is enclosed within a huge bedraggled ‘tentacle’ made of felt and leather. He offers kind Characters a pull from a flask of brandy he keeps hidden in his ‘special mutant’ arm. ‘Superstitious sods don’t even want to touch it.’ Everyone is covered in dried pie and flaking mud. The stench makes everyone hungry and a little nauseous at the same time.

This is a good time for the characters to start to get to know each other, explain why they’re in Ubersreik and what they are trying to accomplish

Murder is frowned upon in all of the cities of the Empire

Ruprecht's eye widen as the ruffian's arm is separated by the dwarf's mighty....shovel.

"Oh my!" he gasps, rushing forward as the other two ruffians flee the dwarf and man who came to assist, "Well done! " he exclaims, tut-tutting away the woman's thank you, motioning her to make her escape.

Hands on his hips, he's about to declare himself satisfied with his work saving the woman and lass from a fate worse than death, when the pistoled woman and soliders appear.

"Arrest!?" he sputters, "Arrest?" his dismay is clearly written upon his face.

Ruprecht is happy to wile away the time conversing with the artists that deign to talk, especially Geri and Henroth...

No one knows who started the brawl. The carnival folk claim it certainly wasn’t them, ‘Bad for business, innit!’. Some blame Jungfreud supporters. Others blame the Altdorfers.

Henroth points out that the Watch members are all from Altdorf, though they wear gold and blue Ubersreik’s livery. ”Had me run ins with a few ‘uv ‘em back in Atldorf didn’t I? They ain’t the cream of the crop, if you knows what’s I mean,” Henroth shares.

Sitting in jail, Valghaz sat and worried. He had beaten two men with a shovel near to death and had killed a third. They’d make him take the slayer oath for sure. Easy enough when the murderer was covered in blood and was holding the murder weapon. So he made his rounds, trying to find people willing to testify that he hadn’t murdered the third man, but rather had protected a woman and a young girl. He figured that the more people who spoke in his defense the less likely that they’d make him dye his hair and seek a heroic death.

Eventually he found Landoff.

”Oi. Ye there. Name’s Valghaz. Awfully brave of ye to rush into a fight like that to save a lass. What’s your name, and where’d ye learn to stick a gobbo like that?”

Landolf attempted to wipe some of the muck off his hands, but found (as he had before) that it only smeared. He was too covered in the filth.

"Good to meet you, master dwarf. Landolf Gersun von Ubersreik. And you think too highly of me. I didn't manage to stick anyone...probably for the best I suppose. Do you live here in the city?"

He shook his head. ”First day in the Empire. Is it always like this? Was just trying to find a quiet place for a drink and to rest me head and suddenly there’s a riot of people trying to kick everyone’s arse!”

Adelaida salutes crisply the officer in charge, and gives her rapport.

My apologies for my uniform's dirtiness. It has been an eventful moment, as you can guess. I came upon this riot, and saw some of our men attacked by civilians, so I went to their rescue after unsuccessfully trying to put an end to the troubles, officer. Couldn't see the attack that killed a man, so I cannot give testimony on what happened. Wasn't there at the start of the riot, it was already in full course when I joined the fray, officer, so I don't know how it began, and who started what.

"Ruprecht Scheinfelder, at your service!" Ruprecht declares to both Valghaz and Landolf, "You both did well to heed my call for aid of that woman and child...that was no riotous behavior I think, all the more menacing for it!"
