Adelaida couldn't help herself, and grinned at Valghaz odd choice of words.

Nevertheless, she took her sword out of its sheath, making the blade gleam in the moonlight.

Nine against two was serious odds, and even with their superior training and battle experience, the soldier knows that all it takes to win a fight is a lucky strike.

Valghaz Ironhammer wrote:

Valghaz was in a foul mood. He had went to the Steinhager offices and had watched for...something? He was no detective! The day had passed uneventfully with merchants the like going about their business. It was frustrating in the extreme to know that something was expected of him but being completely untrained.

As such, when the thugs came, he scowled and lifted his pick. First, he looked at them carefully, to see if they were the mysterious cultists they were after.

[dice=Perception 30]1d100

But, as per usual, he was about as perceptive as a cave troll.

[dice=Intimidate 50]1d100 SL4

However, he was also as intimidating. Pointing his heavy weapon at the men, he said in a loud and very angry voice "Oi! Ye know where else is nice this time of year? Morr's garden! And I'll bloody well send ye there if ye fookin' umgi try anything funny. Now how about ye tell me *who* sent ye 'fore I put me steelshod boot so far up ye arses that ye'll be tastin' me bootshine!"

The thugs look around in confusion as they confirm that there’s only two of you and nine of them. They gather together in a huddle and begin to talk to each other. You can only catch a few words, ”...crazy...Slayer...beers...home to dinner...”

The leader looks at Valghaz as he backs away and in an abashed tone mutters something about ”consider yourself warned” as he and his compatriots melt away into the night.

Yvonne has a morning appointment set up with the Steinhägers and an afternoon appointment set with the Haagens.

The Steinhäger offices are in an imposing single-storey building. The family’s badge, a barrel with the letter ‘S’ branded into it, hangs outside. All the rooms in the building are wood-panelled. The building contains an office and living quarters for the doorkeeper, a reception room, a conference room, offices for the clerks, and offices for Franz Steinhäger, his son Albrecht, and his brother Heinrich.

Arriving at the offices, the door porter consults a list and after finding Landolf’s name ushers you into the building. You are all let into one of the reception rooms, where you’re kept waiting for ten minutes. Then finally you all are shown in to see Franz Steinhäger.

Franz is obviously feeling somewhat disgruntled about something and clearly has no wish to ‘waste time with fools’. He looks askance at the group’s lack of formal attire and with a sniff of derision turns his attention to the nobleman, ”Sir Landolf of Ubersreik, you have a business opportunity to discuss?”

During the discussions with Franz at least one of notices the symbol of the Ordo Septenarius on the bottom of a sheet of parchment. A Challenging (+0) Perception Test is required to make out the signature and the visible writing. Franz rapidly covers the letter if he thinks anyone has noticed it.

Not sure who is with Landolf right now. This is close enough to potential combat that Landolf won't bring Yvonne along, though.

"Indeed, Sir Steinhager. I believe we both have something to gain from this meeting. The forges of Ubersreik run hot, and existing trade relations are insufficient to handle the needs of our artisans and metalcrafters..." Landolf went about setting forward a business proposal he believed would keep the older noble listening.

In truth, it was less than certain that his family could fulfil the trade contract he was proposing. Perhaps if they pushed a noble family on the decline out of the way. For now, just keep him listening. We need more...

His eyes fell across the papers on Franz's desk.

Up to you on whether Landolf would bring Valghaz or not. I can see good arguments for leaving him behind!

If this was a normal visit, Landolf would leave Valghaz behind on the basis that it was his own concern, not that of the Black Thorns. This particular visit is Black Thorns business though. Going in, it was my expectation that we'd need someone to look around for clues while Landolf kept the master of the house occupied. I'd say to bring Valghaz unless you think his efforts are better served elsewhere. We've preemptively had to endure the sneers, so Valghaz being there isn't going to hurt on that end.

This approach is so very different from the one he has in mind for the Haagens.

Landolf had made the decision to bring Valghaz along. And that meant that he had to deal with the consequences of the dwarf talking. And a consequence that usually was, given the legendary lack of charisma that most dwarves possessed. For Valgahz, he saw his role here as not being so much muscle, but rather a distraction, for those of keen eyes to get a good look around. So, distract he did.

"Steinhäger? Well, it's a pleasure to meet ye." Valghaz said, a wide smile appearing through his bushy beard. "An honor to be here, actually. Yer family is well known, and respected. Even I, a dwarf from Karak Azgaraz, have heard of the Steinhäger name. I'd dare say that if more families in the Empire were like yers, then this 'ere land would be in much better shape. I'm Valghaz, Clan Ironhammer. Experts on all that glitter beneath the ground." He gave a slight bow at that. "I hope that we have not caught ye at an inopportune time? Oh neat. Is there any new information from making the check?

Franz Steinhäger is short, grey-haired, sweaty and corpulent, and waddles as he walks. Franz is obviously not very interested in listening to Landolf’s proposal but for politeness sake gives him his attention for a few moments, long enough for Landolf to spot something of interest, a letter on Franz’s desk. Even though Landolf can’t read, his memory is good enough that he’s able to duplicate the words he sees on the paper from Franz’s desk so that Valghaz or Yvonne can read it for the group. The letter is short:

All goes well; the temple is ready for use. In only 2 days our plan comes to fruition at the twelfth bell. Soon we will all be rich.
J. Teugen

After listening to Landolf for a brief time, Franz stands saying, ”my apologies but today is really much too busy.” followed by him shouting for the porter to show you out. As you are being escorted out of the building, the porter is stopped by a slightly younger, slightly less corpulent version of Franz.

”Gentlefolk, I am Heinrich Steinhäger, a partner in the firm. Please join me for a cup of tea in my office.” The porter looks non to pleased by this turn of events and whispers something to Heinrich. Heinrich’s face reddens and he angrily says, ”you forget yourself Wertz, I am as much a partner in the firm as my fat brother. Go...I will see to our guests.”. Abashed the porter slinks away.

Ushering you into his office, Heinrich pours tea for you from a silver tea set which is the only thing of note on his desk. In fact, his office is striking because it lacks the papers and books you’d expect a partner at a major merchant house to have at hand.

Settling back in his chair, Heinrich sips his tea and then asks, ”so, what business do you have with Steinhagers?”

Lets assume that Valghaz gives his nice speech and makes his Charm skill roll when you all are in Heinrich’s office as Franz isn’t charmable.

Heinrich listens with rapt attention to Valghaz, nodding along as Valghaz speaks, clearly taken by the personable dwarf. ”Let me guess, my butterball of a brother had no interest in what you have to say? He’s completely obsessed with some project that he’s working on with Councillor Teugen and ignoring all other business.” Leaning in close to Valghaz, Heinrich explains that his brother has eliminated Heinrich from any role in running the business. ”Franz only includes my idiot nephew in his plans.”

As is typical, Ruprecht is ignored by both Franz and Heinrich allowing him a chance to casually look around. However, Ruprecht is not quite close enough to the desk to be able to read the letter as the writing is small and is of course turned upside down to Ruprecht’s point of view.

Heinrich fails to offer Ruprecht any refreshments.

Landolf listens intently to Heinrich's conversation with Valghaz. The brother is being left out of the sewer plot? He could be lying, but it would be a strange bluff to make. It's too early to show our hand, but maybe it is time to up the ante.

"Thank you for taking the time to meet with us, Herr Steinhager. I am Landolf Gersun, hailing from Ubersreik. My family is of no great import as yet, but I'm here in the city seeking to expand our connections."

"Valghaz and I met in Ubersreik, as we both served with the city watch for a time, helping to keep the peace in the town. After our time of service ended, we banded with a few other companions to form the Black Thorn Company. You should have seen him the time he faced down a troll." Assuming that Heinrich seems interested in the digression, Landolf will relate the story including the greased pig trap.

"It is likely above my station to say so, Herr Steinhager, but it may be fortunate for you that your brother hasn't seen fit to include you in his plans. There are some unsavory rumors going about involving a tunnel from your estate into the sewers. It is hard to believe that one could maintain a reputation in such an environment."

Heinrich motions for you to lean in closer as he lowers his voice and says, ”there’s no secret passageway on the estate. I would stake my reputation to that, but,”he takes a quick look into the hallway to make sure no one is eavesdropping and then adds with a whisper, ”a few months ago while I was out of town, my brother had some sort of passage tunneled from a hidden door in his office down into a large empty room in the sewers. The workmen were only too happy to share that information for a gold crown each. What do you think he’s up to down there?”

"I'm afraid I couldn't guess. The rumors didn't say anything about that. Who puts a secret sewer entrance in their office? Names float on the wind, though. Does Ordo Septenarius mean anything to you?"

It's possible that Heinrich's response could change Landolf's next offer, but I'll put it forward unless it becomes unreasonable.

Landolf thinks for a moment before addressing Heinrich again. "The Black Thorns have conducted similar investigations before. I mentioned the troll earlier...do you want us to look into this sewer tunnel matter for you? We aren't currently on hire and have a few days left in Bogenhafen. We would either need a way to get access to the office in question or a reliable means of finding the other side in the sewers."

”Reminds me more of that vampire hunt we did with the priest of Morr.” Valghaz remarked. Despite himself he shuddered at the memory. Remembering fighting the Old Dark was well and good with a mug in hand. But quiet reflection never felt good when it came to that. The troll had been a monster. But this business reeked of a northern wind.

”Ordo Septenarius?...hmmm....Ordo Septenarius? Oh yes, I thought that name sounded familiar. Have you met Friedrich Magirius, Guildmaster of the Merchant’s Guild yet? He was recruiting for some club he called the Ordo Septenarius. I admit I paid little attention once he said my brother was a member. I have no wish to belong to the same club as the blustering, fat fool. You really must speak with Friedrich if you want to find out more about the club. Here take this,” Heinrich says as he scribbles a hasty note on a piece of paper and hands it to Landolf. ”This will get you a meeting with Friedrich who is quite a decent fellow even if he does associate with my doltish brother.” For those that can read the note simply says, Friedrich, please show every curtesy to the bearers of this note. Warm regards, H.S.

Heinrich leans back in his chair and stares at the ceiling of his office as Landolf makes his pitch about investigating. He ponders for a long moment and then leans forward and again whispering says, ”Let us be blunt. You seem to imply that my brother has become involved in some serious wrongdoing, something damaging to the family, yes? If so, then I have a counter-proposal for you to consider. Franz is in league with the Teugen family and thus safe from official involvement, but if some sort of accident were to befall him than this wrongdoing could be stopped and a true scion of Sigmar would take the leadership of our business. Is this something you would be able to arrange, for a suitable fee of course?”

"We'll need to investigate this further before any accidents might happen. If foul work is at play, we'll take that offer."

Landolf straightens up and raises his voice above a whisper, willing to be heard. "Thank you for the opportunity to meet, Herr Steinhager. Unfortunately, I have another meeting. With your permission, shall we resume this discussion at a later time?"

With the invitation in hand, I think we've gotten what we need here. I'm hoping to withdraw while leaving a plausible opportunity to meet with Heinrich again. After consulting with the Black Thorns, Landolf's next plan is to keep his appointment with the Haagen family since it is probably coming up soon. Assuming that nothing at that meeting changes our course, I'd plan to pursue a meeting with Friedrich Magirius.

Assuming the Black Thorns leave the Steinhager residence without incident, Landolf will suggest they first find a tavern with a private room where they can get breakfast. Talking on the streets of Bogenhafen is too risky for the discussion they need to have.

"Let's find someplace to get breakfast. Preferably somewhere we can talk privately."

”Aye. Well done there. I’ll go get us a room while ye round up the rest. Meet me at The Mother Load. It’s in the Teuerberg district. Heinrich himself shows you out of the family office, shaking hands with Landolf and Vaglhaz at the door. As usual, he ignores Ruprecht.

There are no incidents traveling to the tavern so you all gather at the Mother Load.

Arriving first, Valghaz is greeted with a cry of "KAZAKIDIUM SLAYER!" by the barkeep while the single lonely customer hammers his fist on his table in recognition of Valghaz.

When the rest of the group arrives the barkeep points them to a table set in the far corner of the room, half-hidden in shadows, saying "the Kazakdium slayer is back there."

Coming in, Valghaz nodded in recognition to the two and muttered ”Only by Grungni’s will.” Despite his humble response, it felt good to be recognized by kinsmen. Ugh. I was going to tell the rest of the party what Landolf saw on the Ordo Septenarius paper, but then remembered that he can't read anyway. Is there anything Landolf should have come away with from his Perception check despite his illiteracy?

As the Black Thorns settle into breakfast and check their surroundings, Landolf exchanges what he learned at the Steinhager residence. "If this Ordo Septenarius group is behind the activity we saw in the sewers, then this goes far higher than just implicating the one family. There's a group recruiting the top families in the area into their cult."

"I need to keep my appointment with the Haagen family to discuss personal business, but I'll keep my eyes open for any signs of their involvement. After that, I think we should make use of this invitation we got from Heinrich."

I'm assuming that Yvonne would be with them for the breakfast & that she's filled in about the general nature of what they are up to by now. We've been ignoring general food expenses in Bogenhafen, but I'm assuming that this breakfast is more expensive. How much should we mark off from Company Funds for it?

Your breakfast discussion is interrupted when a dwarf in full steel plate mail clanks into the tavern. He makes his way unerringly to your table and, ignoring the humans, hands Valghaz a scroll tied closed with a bright gold ribbon. As soon as Valghaz takes the scroll, the armored dwarf gracefully makes a 180 degree turn and walks back out of the tavern without a word.

Valghaz’s Scroll:
Written in Khazalid The Order of the Stone Wall requests your presence at the Chapter House in Altdorf as soon as possible. Signed, Tralok Brightshield, Chapter Master.

The meal cost is 1 Shilling per patron except for Valghaz who is not charged for his food.

Landolf and compatriots (depending on who accompanies Landolf), makes their way to the Haagen family home in the Adel Ring.

Set around the lush Saponatheim Gardens, the Adel Ring is Bögenhafen’s most exclusive district, and is where all of its wealthiest citizens have their homes. The mansions of the great and good of the town, each with their own private grounds, form three sides of the ring. The fourth is composed of luxurious terraced townhouses, where the relatively less affluent merchants, artisans, and minor nobility reside. The gates and doors are clearly marked with the symbols of the owning families; the better to ensure all can see how gaudily ostentatious one’s home is, and therefore how sickeningly wealthy one is. Given the nature of the homes in the district, there is a near-constant Watch presence here, and the patrols are quick to approach anyone acting suspiciously or who clearly does not belong.

The Haagen family mansion is stately and reserved. Its walled gardens feature delicately intricate topiary and numerous gas-powered lamps, enabling its owners to take the night air in style. Of course, given Bögenhafen’s frequent misty nights, the lamps tend to lend the grounds an eerie, less benign air. The dark stone house itself is two storeys high, with a collonaded single- storey entrance hall jutting from the middle. Atop this edifice sits a gilded galleon, bearing the symbol of House Haagen: a Griffon’s head over three coins.

Jochen Haagen is the head of the family, a sober, shrewd businessman with a fine eye for luxuries and detail. His wife Maria is one of Bögenhafen’s most celebrated hostesses, and regularly organises dinners, parties, and salons. Despite the success of these soirees, Haagen remains something of an outsider, albeit a wealthy one, within the Merchants’ Guild.

The butler shows the group into Jochen’s private study. After an offer of wine and cheeses and a bit of small talk about the weather and the Schaffenfest, Jochen focuses his attention on Landolf and asks him about his proposed business opportunity always interested in new ways to increase his wealth.

Valghaz watched in confused silence as the heavily armored warrior stomped over to him, and with a bushy eyebrow raised accepted the scroll. He watched the warrior leave and then slowly opened it. He read the scroll once, then a second time. He then put it down and stared at it, as if though it was a riddle that contained the answer to the question of life itself. At length he looked at his companions, and slowly rolled the scroll up.

"This is more than Clan business. This is about..." He trailed off, unsure of how much he was supposed to say. Or even how to explain what this was. "The closest that I can think of would be if one of ye received word that a...what do ye call it? An Arch Lector? Aye. If an Arch Lector sent for ye. I've been called to Altdorf. Could be good." After a moment's thought he said "Could be bad." With a sudden lump in his throat. "When we conclude our matters here, would ye all accompany me?"

"I thank ye." Valghaz said, with feeling. Some of the weight was lifted from his shoulders hearing that he wasn't alone. He figured that what was happening either meant something grand might happen, or more likely, he was being accused to some kind of transgression and was being summoned for an investigation. Knowing that he wasn't alone made it feel better. However, when Ruprecht asked to read the scroll, the worry returned with a weight that was ten-fold. Because it brought home to the knowledge that having them around meant endangering the people that he considered friends. A word, which he only at that point realized, had replaced comrades in his mind.

Holding the scroll, he asked, with some amazement "It's in Khazalid. Do ye read klinkarhun?" After a moment's thought, he leaned in to the table and said in a low voice "A better translation might well be...ah...warrior priest....eh, captain? Witch hunter priest?" The miner struggled at that moment to put his thoughts into words, a mixture of stress and the fact that Reikspel was his second language was showing as the subtly escaped him. "Either way." He finished, his voice still lower than usual. "Might not be safest to talk about it too much here, aye?" He let his words drop and then leaned back, realizing then that they had somehow become mixed up with not only the Witch Hunters of Sigmar, but also Grungni's Templars...

Later, at the Haagen estate Landolf finds himself less distracted without a subterfuge to conceal, "Thank you for meeting with us, Herr Haagen. Your estate is impressive: surely the work of time and care."

He begins laying out the business opportunity he sees available in Bogenhafen, primarily with the idea of transporting dwarf-crafted goods from Karak Azgaraz to the south of Ubersreik to Bogenhafen, increasing their availability in the city & shipping at a profit. The Gersun family would play a role in mediating with the dwarves & helping to ease any bureaucratic burdens and taxes levied on the shipments.

"Were we to come to such an arrangement, would we be able to expect your support in working with the Merchant's Guild in Bogenhafen?" he asks, prodding to find out more about the relationship between the Haagen family and the Guild.

In the tavern, Adelaida was sipping a beer and eating her meal, happy to see the deserved respect bestowed on her brother in arm.

As a soldier, she sits in wonder at the sight of the dwarf walking in, wearing a magnificent full plate.

I'm not sure I could walk in a tavern carrying so much weight on my body...Dwarves are really sturdy! And all that to deliver a message?

She waits as Valghaz reads the message, and smiles at his question, playfully teasing him

Of course I'll go with you in Altdorf. You felt you had to ask? you'd better pay me a beer and hope I forget this slight!

One beer later, and walking toward the Adel Ring, Adelaida bumps into a wandering preacher, who spread the word of Sigmar Heldenhammer to a small, vaguely interested crowd. His small corner of street is surrounded by a wine-seller barrels, on which he put numerous pamphlets, probably covered in holy words.
Adelaida barely glances at them, then stops dead in her tracks. She comes closer to the old bits of parchment , and looks at them carefully. Slowly, the writings start to make sense, forming words, then words forming sentences.

The soldier's face grows pale, as she realises she manages to read-barely at first- the holy scriptures of Sigmar!

It's a miracle! I can read! I can read the words of Sigmar! Praised be his name!

Jochen listens carefully to Landolf’s business proposal, making notes in a ledger. ”Our family has not had much commerce with the dwarfs of the Grey Mountains but it is something that we would be interested in exploring. Dwarven weapons would fetch a good price here. Also, mechanical devices such as clocks or even toys could be of interest.” Jochen pulls out a ledger and checks some figures. ”As this is a new venture, I am inclined to start small and see how it goes. We could put in, say 500 Gold Crowns towards the first caravan and we would take a 60% share of profits after our initial investment is recouped. When could you organize the first trade trip?”

”Assuming a successful first caravan, the Haagen family would be happy to sponsor you for membership in the Guild. You likely will need a second sponsor too as our family is not intimately involved with the Guild. We pay our dues but otherwise go our on way.”

On to the Merchant’s Guild.

The Merchants’ Guild has a clerk sitting at a front desk carved with imperial crosses and coins. The clerk greets you all with a neutral tone. Once shown the letter though he becomes more amiable and says he will escort you straight to the guildmaster.

Friedrich Magirius, the guildmaster, stands up as you enter, introduces himself, and asks you to sit. Magirius then enquires politely what your interest in the Ordo Septenarius might be, and listens to any story you care to tell him. Magirius gives no indication of whether or not he believes what he is told. When you all finish your tale, Magirius stands up, still smiling.

”It seems to me that this is no more than an unfortunate series of misunderstandings. If you will do me the honour of dining with me, I'll explain the whole business to you. I can assure you that there is nothing sinister about this at all. If you are ready now, I invite you all to allow me to treat you to a meal at the Golden Trout Club.”

Even after a few days in town, you are all aware that the Golden Trout Club is the most exclusive dining establishment in the city, frequented by only the wealthiest patrons.

How much would it cost Landolf to send a letter back to his family from here? I'm assuming that one of us (not Landolf) writes the letter.

Before asking to meet with Freidrich, can Landolf inquire at the Merchant's Guild whether any of the Gersun family debt holders have offices in Bogenhafen and where he might find them? Are we assuming that we said something that would lead Friedrich to believe that we thought Ordo Septenarius was sinister? Or did he say that without prompting from us? I think my intent was to express interest in Ordo Septenarius and try to join it as a means of investigation.

It’s easy enough to get a letter to Ubersreik since there are multiple coaches a week that travel between Altdorf and Ubersreik so for a small fee a driver will take it to Ubersreik. The issue is getting it to the family estate. Assuming the family uses a lawyer in Ubersreik, you could send the letter to him with a request to forward it to the family. Let’s say cost to Ubersreik is ½ a shilling as a tip to the driver and then the family would reimburse the lawyer as part of their usual fees.

The clerk at the Guild can provide directions to the Resolute Bank as it’s not far from the guild. Neither Frudel, et al or Sedersberg, et al have offices in Bogenhafen.

Heinrich Steinhäger sent a note to Magirius saying that you have have suspicions about the Ordo and are planning on visiting to ask questions and to cooperate with you. It will not have been the first time that Magirius would have had to explain what the Ordo is and what it does,

Khazalid”there was a group of engineers from Karak Azgaraz that were in here a few weeks ago heading to Castle Grauenburg. "I would be happy to join you for dinner. I apologize about any misunderstanding. It would be good to know the truth of the matter. So many rumors are flying about town, with the festival and all."

It’s early evening when Magirius escorts you to dinner. Looking upward, Morrslieb dominates the sky, it is even larger and the skull face more pronounced. It seems to hang low above the town, and in any reflections (in pools, puddles, glass, and similar), it appears impossibly close, as if it were scraping the tallest buildings. As you walk along, the skull face sometimes appears to move.

At the Golden Trout Magirius is welcomed at the door by the porter, who leads you to the dining room. Your host invites you to sit and order whatever they like from the club’s extensive menu.
He makes polite but irrelevant conversation over the meal, talking about the wool and wine trades, asking you for your impressions of the town and the Schaffenfest, where they are from, and similar small talk. Magirius politely but firmly steers conversation away from any discussion of the Hidden Temple and the Ordo Septenarius, saying that he is happy to explain everything after the meal.

Once the meal is over, Magirius orders a decanter of brandy and begins to explain the society.

”I can see how this series of misunderstandings has arisen. I suppose it’s only natural, since we prefer to keep the society’s undertakings confidential.”

“The Ordo Septenarius is a club, if you like, and most of the members are drawn from the merchant families of the town. There are 49 members in all — 42 ordinary members and an Inner Council of 7.”

“We represent the elite within the Merchants’ Guild, and co-operate with each other in order to reap the greatest profit for all. We make donations to the temples, and run a soup kitchen in the Pit for the relief of the poor in association with the Temple of Shallya.”

“There are various reasons why we prefer to remain nameless — many of our members are town councillors, like myself, and many more are in a position to stand for office if they choose. People in those positions would be open to accusations of bribery and electioneering if they were to engage in these charitable activities openly, and it would be a shame if the poor were to suffer because we were afraid to do anything for them.”

“Also, our co-operation in mercantile ventures is bound to incite a certain amount of bad feeling amongst our competitors. As things are, people are aware that some cooperation is going on, but they don't know who is involved; thus, they cannot openly accuse any individual of malpractice or take any reprisals. And their suspicions tend to work against them, giving us an even greater advantage.”

“So, you understand our need for secrecy. There are many who would reap great political advantage by discovering the membership of the Ordo, and some of our junior members might be tempted by their offers. We need to offer them some... encouragement to abide by the rules of the society. Because of this the workings of the Ordo are wrapped in a certain amount of ritual — or, should I say, the semblance of ritual, with various ceremonies, oaths, and grades of initiation. I find that nothing concentrates the mind on thoughts of allegiance like participation in ceremony and the promise of promotion.”

Valghaz's Letter:

Honored Throngrink*,

Not much time has passed since I have left our Karak, but I must write to you, for duty compels. There is a grudge to be added to the Clan's Book of Grudges, and this letter bears the tale. I will start from the beginning.

After leaving hearth and home, I came to Ubersreik. Through a series of events, I came to work as a member of the City's Watch, earning coin protecting the city. It was there that I came to be part of a group which has proven itself to be dawri.* These umgi* who are almost dawikoni*. After hunting down a troll that was preying on the poorest umgi, and assisting their version of the Cult of Gazul in cleansing a vampire, we were released from service and formed our own mercenary band. We are being led by Landolf Gersun von Ubersreik, a nobleman. Should Landolf, Adelaida Lehner, Ruprecht Scheinfelder or Talther Augenlos come to our Karak, then they should be known as umgi of proven character and I hope that they are treated as such. Our company has taken on a number of contracts, and this is where the grudge comes in.

Andreas Wagenknecht! May the stones themselves curse his name and all who share his blood! The man, and I use the term loosely, played the role of a priest of Verena, one of the umgi gods. Using this false guise, he hired our company in the name of the Cannon Ball Express to go on a grobi* hunt, as the foul beasts had been murdering caravans. We hunted down and exterminated the wolf-riding scoundrels and came for a reward of twenty gold coins. The false-priest ordered a feast for us, and then absconded, leaving us to pay. When fleeing, he stole not only our reward money, but also the coin of the Cannonball Express. A reward has been placed on his head of 100 gold coins, with Gershwin of the Cannonball Express having placed the buonty on the man's head.

I was in the process of hunting the oathbreaker down, but now must send this letter with written grudge. The company I am is in the process of hunting down the summoner of a kazakidum, a fiend that has already spilled dawi blood. Moreso, when this creature is felled, I have been summoned by the Order of the Stone Wall, and I am honor-bound to heed their summons. Given the paths before me, the priority is clear. Andreas Wagenknecht deserves to be put down like a thaggoraki that skulks in the mines, but there are threats and responsibilities that take precedence. As my path takes me away from the fleeing vermin, his name must be entered into the Book of Grudges. For so long as the mountains endure, let his name and that of his Clan wither under the scowls of the ancestors!

- Valghaz Ironhammer

* Elder of a Clan (his father)
* Dawri: dwarven for 'brothers in arms*
* Umgi: humans
* Dawikoni: Literally 'almost-dwarf.' A technical term used for humans who live in dwarven territory. About as much of a compliment as he can give.
* Grobi: goblins

If the meeting at the Golden Trout happened during the evening, would Landolf have had time to stop by the offices of Resolute Bank first?

*

In spite of the investigation he was pursuing, Landolf quite enjoyed the lavish meal he had been offered. The fare was considerably better than the meals they had back at his family home, excepting for when his parents needed to put on a costly show: they simply hadn't the means.

He listened to the man's explanation of the nature of Ordo Septenarius closely. He's giving up more than he realizes. Baldly lying would be too much of a risk on his part, so there must be some truth to his explanation of the group's activities and structure. Now to press further...

"Thank you for putting my mind at ease, Herr Magirius. You might have heard that I'm pursuing business opportunities in the city, and I need to protect any investments my family makes. Such rumors were worrisome, but it is good to know the truth of the matter. Perhaps you could settle a further matter for me...I heard much during the festival. Several rumors suggested that the Steinhagers had been building a tunnel into the sewers from their estate with the assistance of Ordo Septenarius. It was this disreputable tale that first gathered my attention. Heinrich wasn't able to tell me what his brother had been up to, but had reason to believe that the construction was real."

I don't expect he'll just tell us that was their lead-in to a temple to the Ruinous Powers, but (to my thinking) it will matter if he claims knowledge of what is going on, even if the story he gives is a lie. If he doesn't know what it is about, he might not be deep enough in the group to know about the Chaos worship. If he does, he's very likely covering for them.

@ValghazGM: Already read it, an excellent work!

I think I will find a way to spread the holy words of Sigmar, and to help defending the souls of my fellow citizens as I defend the land and people of the Empire!

Adelaida speaks with a new found zeal, as if she has suddenly found her life purpose.

Landolf wouldn’t have time to make it to the bank before dinner

Magirius sips his brandy as he listens politely to Landolf, a pleasant expression on his face. ”Ah, yes the sewers. There is indeed a tunnel to the meeting room beneath the Steinhager offices but it was simply built for convenience sake. No gentleman wants to have to slosh around the sewers to get to the club meeting room. If you don’t know, Councilor Teugen himself designed the meeting room to impress the lesser members of the Ordo but that’s really all it is...a meeting room, or perhaps clubhouse would be a better description. I’d advise to take any negative comments from Heinrich Steinhager to be nothing more than jealousy of a younger brother. Confidentially, I believe that Heinrich will soon be dismissed from the from for embezzlement.”

Successful Average (+20) Intuition Skill Test:
Magirius is being completely sincere and honest.

"It is regrettable when family matters break down in such a fashion. Once again, thank you for hearing us out. Your candor is appreciated."

Freidrich may not be aware of the nature of the temple we found. He seems sincere. If I hadn't seen the temple myself, I'd be persuaded. Probably he doesn't know of the nature of what was really going on down there. He doesn't seem to realize how ridiculous the 'gentleman's clubhouse hidden in the sewers' story sounds...

Things I think we can consider reliable from him: (maybe I'm missing some)
* Ordo Septenarius has almost fifty members spread across most of the town's high-ranking merchants. Most of them are likely not aware of any worship of the Ruinous Powers going on.
* Teugen was involved in the design of the 'clubhouse' and isn't likely to be innocent.

If anyone else has questions, feel free to ask. I think Landolf will just continue small talk until the meeting concludes otherwise.

Great work! Yeah, I think that you've gotten as much as you can out of this. I think that Teugen is our next hit. Do we talk to the probably chaos cultist, or do we break into his home to get evidence?

Dinner at an end, you once again find yourselves under the lambent green light of Morrslieb. Occasionally, in reflections, you see the Chaos moon licking its lips with a huge, green tongue. Most of Bogenhafen’s good folk have hidden away in fear but a few treat it as a spectacle to be witnessed, and stand outside watching the swollen moon, hoping to catch sight of something extraordinary.

Make a Challenging (+0) Cool Test

Success:
You tear your gaze away from the horrifying spectacle, feeling nauseous and are left with a splitting headache but otherwise are untouched by Chaos.

Failure :
You stand and stare at the moon, mouth agape and drooling. From somewhere far away you hear the buzzing of insects that seems to grow steadily louder. The longer you stare at the moon, the more certain you are that the moon is staring back. You’ll stand there all night unless someone physically breaks your gaze.

I didn't specify that Yvonne was with the group for the dinner, but it makes the most sense to say that she was there. Obviously, she didn't sit to eat the meal with the rest of the group. Probably, she ate something substantially less sumptuous in a servant's room or in the kitchens.

Yvonne Cool 35: 1d100 ⇒ 4

Yvonne cringed at the sight of Morrisleb in the sky, but said nothing. She pulled at her livery as if hoping to shield herself from the dire moon's gaze.
