All of the doors and windows were barred, right? I'm guessing that includes internal doors. We may have to smash our way out of this one.

Correct, all of the doors and windows are barred. If you want to break out, make a Dramatic Melee Weapons Skill Check (basically the door and windows have Toughness and Wounds that need to be overcome).

Landolf quickly discovers that a foil is not a good tool to use to try to smash open a barred window. Other than scratching the wooden shutters, the foil makes no impression on the window.

With a mighty swing, Valghaz smashes the door to pieces allowing the Black Thorns egress back into the alley.

On the ground just outside the door you find a body that his literally been ripped limb from limb. In fact, the corpse seems to be short a leg until you see that it's actually be thrown onto the roof of the building next to the fake law office. The head is intact though and you easily identify the corpse as that of Adolphus Kuftsos who has haunted your steps since Altdorf.

You spot a letter sticking out of the top of Adolphus' tunic. Written on the parchment is the following:
For the personal attention of Herr Adolphus Kuftsos
The Nine Star Coaching Inn
The Middenheim Road
Altdorf

My Dear Herr Kuftsos,

You may recall a certain conversation we has last Brauzelt in the public bar of the Hook and Hatchet in Nuln. At that time you mentioned your interest in the activities of a certain society whose name I shall not mention here. In particular you were very anxious to trace the whereabouts of a certain officer, known only as the Magister Impedimentae.

I am now able to confirm each and every one of your suspicions. After your departure I made some discreet enquiries and managed to ascertain that the person you seek uses the name Kastor Lieberung. In accordance with your plan, Herr Lieberung will be travelling towards Altdorf on the Nuln road at some time towards the end of the month of Jahrdrung.

I have also had the good fortune to secure a likeness of Herr Lieberung which I enclose with this letter.

I remain your most obedient servant.

Q.F.

Reentering through the smashed door you once again find yourselves in the anteroom of the 'lawyers' office. A thorough search of the 'law clerk's' desk reveals a page or two of blank parchment and nothing else.

The door from the anteroom into the rest of the building is also barred and locked but you all can eventually batter it open. That door though does not lead into a lawyers inner office, instead it leads into a small back alleyway that runs parallel to the Garten Weg. There is a clever series of pulleys that were used to drop the bars across the doors and windows of the small building. Other than that, there is nothing of note to be found.

Valghaz Ironhammer wrote:

A search of the body parts reveals the following:

One broken crossbow
20 crossbow bolts
One ripped apart set of mail armor
Iron manacles with locks (3 sets)
Rope (20 yards)
A well-cared for sword
3 Gold Crows, 11 Shillings and 9 Pennies in a blood soaked bag.

The captain and crew of the good barge Berebeli are very happy to see you all again. Gilda passes out plates of beans and good hearty bread and Wolmar pulls out a couple of bottles of wine and passes them around. Little Elsa toddles over to Valghaz and demands to be picked up. The homey feel of the barge is a stunning contrast to what you found in the Garten Weg.

Once everyone is settled into their favorite spots on deck and have had a chance to slake their thirst, Josef pauses in his eating and asks, "from the looks on your faces and your pallor, I'm assuming things did not go as hoped. So, tell us about your excursion? Did you clear up the situation with that bounty-hunter?"

Adelaida was hoping for some sort of document on the dead body... even if she still felt light shame about not being about to read it anyway if she found it.

But instead of feeling her shame like a burden, she used it some fuel to reach her goal: learning to read and write.

I guess the matter was of importance if they had to use such an elaborate trap. And perhaps whoever killed that man was too afraid of the information he could deliver if we caught him alive.

"That definitely seems like a grisly end for the bounty-hunter. He may claim to have been doing good for the Empire, but I'll not forgive him for trying to burn my boat and kill my crew. I reckon he's as much of a villain as those he hunts," Josef says after hearing your tale. He puffs on his pipe for a moment and then continues, "you lot are handy to have around so if you want to stay on as part of the crew that would suit me. Same deal as before. It's going to be a couple of days before we're ready to sail back to Altdorf so you might as well check out the Schaffenfest tomorrow. It's something to see. And if you don't want to stay as crew, it's also a good place to pick up work. No need to decide your futures today, think about it and let me know."

Puffing contentedly on his pipe he adds, "did you ever hear the story of the bounty-hunter that married the troll? No? Well, listen to this..." Josef proceeds to tell you a semi-scandalous story that anatomically would be highly unlikely but it quite entertaining none the less.

Assuming that you all want to take in the Schaffenfest the next day.

Schaffenfest

Josef gives you all directions to the Schaffenfest: "Turn left on to the Hafenstrasse and keep goin’ straight on to the East Gate. You can’t miss it!" The streets are decorated with coloured bunting, and the main flow of the crowds is eastwards to the fair. The party is soon surrounded by happy, laughing festivalgoers, all eager to enjoy what the Schaffenfest has to offer.

Every spring, folk from across the Reikland flock to Bögenhafen for the Schaffenfest. As well as the extensive livestock market, there are scores of stalls and sideshows of all kinds, making the three-day fair a great attraction and a highlight of the town’s calendar. The area between the East Gate and Postern Gate is crowded with livestock pens, market stalls, and sideshows of every description, and the air rings with the cries of entertainers and hawkers.

The atmosphere is intoxicating with a great mixture of folk brushing shoulders with each other, from dirty beggars to well-dressed artisans, from brightly-clothed entertainers to sombre-looking watchmen — the entire spectrum of Bögenhafen’s populace is represented. There are labourers singing loudly and out of tune (having over-indulged themselves at one of the beer tents), babies crying, pedlars hawking their wares, all interwoven with the general hubbub of people enjoying themselves.

The vendors

You can buy or sell almost anything at the Schaffenfest so if there is any shopping you want to do, this is the place.

Medicine Shows
There are several Medicine Shows dotted around the Schaffenfest. A blend of sideshow and stall, most are run by charlatans whose only concern is to make money by selling some worthless concoction as a panacea. Among the wares advertised by these rogues are, ‘Doctor Zeuss’s Wonder Tonic’, ‘Rare Elven Spirit Water’, and ‘Genuine Norscan Silver Talismans’. The properties claimed for these products are many and varied, such as ‘...cures colic, rheumatics, warts, and bad breath’, or ‘keeps out the cold, evil spirits, and the neighbour’s cat...’ and so on.

Successful Average (+20) Healing Test:
There is one stall, owned by Elvyra Kleinestun where real herbal remedies can be acquired. Elvyra is delighted to meet anyone who ‘knows their herbs from cowdung’. Although her goods sell for twice the normal price, she can be bargained down using the Haggle Skill.

Fortune Tellers
Clairvoyants, palmists, and self-proclaimed prophets generally set up shop in small, dimly-lit tents to tell fortunes for a small fee. The fortune telling may be done in a number of ways, including palmistry, cards, dice, crystal balls, tea leaves and more. Most fortune tellers employ a number of these methods,
each with their corresponding props.

Successful Challenging (+0) Intuition Check:
One of the fortune-tellers is difference someone, more believable maybe. Mystic Megret’has been peering into the future all her life. If you wish to hear your fortune told you need to stop in her bright-red and yellow tent.

Fair Games

Foot Race
Anchor Roll
Pole Climb
Hammer Throwing
Tug of War - Team game
Dwile Thunking - Team game Originally a Mootlander game, the summertime pub sport of Dwile Flonking has gained broader acceptance, and is especially popular in Stirland and Reikland. It involves 2 teams of 12, and requires two circles of 11 players dance hand-in-hand around a single opponent who spins in the opposite direction. After a count of three, the central player of each team ‘flonks’ his ‘dwile’ — i.e.: throws a beer-soaked cloth — at the surrounding dancers, trying to hit one, preferably in the face. On a hit, the flonker scores points for his team. On a miss, called a ‘swadge’, the flonker must down a pint of beer from a chamber pot called a ‘gazunder’ before the dwile is fetched by the opposing team and passed down the line of all eleven dancers as they chant ‘pot, pot, pot!’
Bowling
Arm Wresting

Each individual game costs 2 Shillings to enter and if you win you earn 1 Gold Crown. Each team game cost the team a total of 6 Shillings to enter and if you win you earn 1 Gold Crown.

Some important information about the fair games. Each individual competition is 5 rounds long with opponents getting harder as you advance. If you lose in Round 1-3 then you're out and lose your bet. If you lose in Round 4 you get a chit for a free flagon of ale at the beer tent. If you lose in Round 5 you get your bet back and the chit for free beer. If you win in Round 5 then you get the appropriate cash prize and a chit for free beer.

Team games are only 3 rounds long. If you lose in Round 1 you get nothing. If you lose in Round 2 you get free beer chit. If you lose in Round 3 you get your bet back and free beer and if you win in Round 3 you get the cash prize and free beer.

If you enter 2 or more competitions you get a free beer chit.

If you enter all 8 competitions, you are officially a "Fester" and get a sash you can wear proudly and also get a Fester chit to drink all the beer you want that day.

Before you left for the Schaffenfest, Josef pulled you all together. "Let me make it clear that if you get into a brawl you should not under any circumstances use a weapon. Remember you represent the Berebeli so don't kill anyone!" He emphasized this point to Valghaz by keeping his eye on him as he gave the instructions to not kill anyone.

Luckily for Valghaz, the brute had faced difficult oppenents in each of his earlier rounds (luck of the draw that) and had nothing left by the time he faced Valghaz who wore down the man and pinned his arm after a lengthy struggle.

A yell rings out over the noise of the Schaffenfest crowd.

"SIR LANDOLF!! SIR LANDOLF!! IS IT REALLY YOU?" a young woman that had been helping with the Bowling game shouts. She comes running over to Landolf, tears in the corners of her eyes. "I've been looking everywhere for you! I can't believe it, I finally found you!"

As he bowls, the two halfling children continue to beg Ruprecht for money so they can buy some food.

At Talther's suggestion of trying their hand at Dwile Thunking, Landolf nods in agreement. "I had a lot of brothers, but never enough to field a full team. We kind of had to make do. Does anyone else want to join in?"

Are we able to know in advance which skills would be tested for the various games?

Approached by the young woman at the Bowling games, Landolf starts with surprise. He'd heard that someone was looking for him, but he clearly didn't expect this. "Yvonne? What are you doing here?"

"Lady Gersun sent me to join you. I left just days after you left the estate and got stuck in Bogenhafen. It's such a relief to find you."

She straightens her back and curtsies to him. "With your permission, I shall enter your service. Lady Gersun instructed me to aid in your endeavours."

She spares a glance back to the Bowling lanes. "I'm afraid I've hired on for the games here, however."

Landolf grants Yvonne permission to continue working at the Bowling games for the rest of the day. "I'll come to find you when the games are closing tonight. If I'm detained elsewhere, come to the docks tonight. We've been staying aboard the Berebeli."

Approached by the young woman at the Bowling games, Landolf starts with surprise. He'd heard that someone was looking for him, but he clearly didn't expect this. "Yvonne? What are you doing here?"

Dwile Thunking

Talther and Landolf will make 2 Opposed Ranged (Throw) Tests against Dodge Tests from their opponents. Then Talther and Landolf will make an Opposed Dodge Test versus a Throwing Test from the other team. Please make 2 Ranged (Throwing) tests and 1 Dodge Test.

The Other Teams Skill Level:
Random Dodging Skills: 3d6 + 30 ⇒ (3, 5, 1) + 30 = 39Random Dodging Skills: 3d6 + 30 ⇒ (4, 3, 4) + 30 = 41Random Dodging Skills: 3d6 + 30 ⇒ (4, 3, 1) + 30 = 38Random Dodging Skills: 3d6 + 30 ⇒ (4, 6, 6) + 30 = 46Random Throwing Skills: 3d6 + 30 ⇒ (4, 1, 1) + 30 = 36Random Throwing Skills: 3d6 + 30 ⇒ (6, 2, 4) + 30 = 42

Talther and Landolf take their turns in the middle of the circle of the opposing players and twice get to Flonk their Dwile, trying to hit the opposing team's players, preferably in the face, with the beer soaked rag (the Dwile). Then Talther and Landolf will join the rest of the Thunking Burghers in trying to Dodge a Dwile.

Talther Dwile Thunks
Talther will make 2 Opposed Ranged Throws against Dodge Skill rolls and an Opposed Dodge skill roll against a Ranged Throw test.

Talther Flonks His Dwile Try 1
Talther takes the beer soaked rag and Flonks it as hard as possible towards the circling foe who makes a decent enough attempt to dodge the Dwile.
Dodge Skill Test Ale Slayer #1 (39): 1d100 ⇒ 31 SL +0 Need an SL +1 or higher to get a point for your team]
If Talther does not get a hit, Talther 'swadges' and must down a pint of beer from a chamber pot called a ‘gazunder’ before the Dwile is fetched by the opposing team and passed down the line of all eleven dancers as they chant ‘pot, pot, pot!’.
[ooc]Make a Challenging (+0) Consume Alcohol Test or you are unable to drink the pint before the Dwile is passed around the circle and you lose a point for your team.

Talther Flonks His Dwile Try 2
Again Talther throws his Dwile towards the other team but his foe this time is a wily dodger.
Dodge Skill Test Ale Slayer #2 (41): 1d100 ⇒ 24 SL +2 Talther need an SL +3 or higher to get a point for his team, otherwise he Swadges again and must drink another pint from the gazunder.

Talther Tries to Dodge A Dwile
This time Talther is dancing hand-in-hand with his teammates around one of the Ale Slayers when the slayer Flonks his Dwile right at Talther but his opponents throw is pretty bad.
Talther needs to make a Dodge Skill test.
Range Skill Test Ale Slayer #3 (36): 1d100 ⇒ 82 SL -5
Talther just needs to have a result of -5 or higher to dodge the dwile and get a point for his team.

Now Landolf steps into the middle of the circling Ale Slayers...

Landolf Flonks His Dwile Try 1
Landolf takes the beer soaked rag and Flonks it at his foe who basically makes no attempt to dodge.
Dodge Skill Test Ale Slayer #4 (38): 1d100 ⇒ 85 SL -5 Need an SL -4 or higher to get a point for your team]
If Landolf does not get a hit he 'swadges' and must down a pint of beer from a chamber pot called a ‘gazunder’ before the Dwile is fetched by the opposing team and passed down the line of all eleven dancers as they chant ‘pot, pot, pot!’.
[ooc]Make a Challenging (+0) Consume Alcohol Test or you are unable to drink the pint before the Dwile is passed around the circle and you lose a point for your team.

Landolf Flonks His Dwile Try 2
Again Landolf throws his Dwile towards the other team but his foe this time his is a slippery target.
Dodge Skill Test Ale Slayer #5 (46): 1d100 ⇒ 26 SL +2 Landolf needs an SL +3 or higher to get a point for his team, otherwise he Swadges

Landolf Tries to Dodge A Dwile
This time around Landolf is dancing hand-in-hand around one of the Ale Slayers when the Slayer Flonks his Dwile at him.
Landolf needs to make a Dodge Skill test.
Range Skill Test Ale Slayer #3 (42): 1d100 ⇒ 64 SL -2
Landolf just needs to have a result of -2 or higher to dodge the Dwile and get a point for his team.

Exhausted, she fails tremendously at the last test. Her drilling sergeant would chew her mightily if he was there...

Adelaida joins in the fun, trying several of the contests...

Foot Race

Foot Race Round 1:
Athletics Test (33): 1d100 ⇒ 26SL +1

Adelaida sprints well in Race 1 but unfortunately her opponents shows a bit more skill and nips her at the finish line.

Pole Climb

Pole Climb Round 1:
Climb Test (33): 1d100 ⇒ 86SL -5

Pole Climb Round 2:
Climb Test (39): 1d100 ⇒ 53SL -2

Pole Climb Round 3:
Climb Test (44): 1d100 ⇒ 62SL -2

Adelaida has a much better showing in the Pole Climb competition making it until Round 3 but then an unlucky break sends her sprawling down after she's half-way to the top and thus she loses her chance to get to Round 4.

Anchor Flip

Anchor Flip Round 1:
Strength Test (33): 1d100 ⇒ 94SL -6Adelaida actually wins the contest at her SL -6 is better than her opponents -6 because her strength is higher

Anchor Flip Round 2:
Strength Test (33): 1d100 ⇒ 59SL -2

Exhausted, Adelaida struggles mightily to flip over the anchor. Luckily, her opponent has no more luck. Finally, long after the other Round 1 contests finish, Adelaida flips her anchor just before her opponent advancing her to Round 2. However, even though Adelaida does a better job flipping the anchor in Round 2, her opponent is a bit faster defeating her and stopping her from making it to Round 3.

With a successful Average (+20) Haggle check, you can convince a merchant to buy the broken weapon for parts for 1/10 of the normal price (10 Shillings). Unfortunately, the remnants of the armor are of little interest but on a successful Challenging (+0) Haggle check a blacksmith will pay about 1/20 of the normal price for the bits of metal (3 Shillings).

Sure, make an Average (+0) Evaluate check to see if it's special

In case Throw #2 missed as well:
Consume Alcohol 45 for Throw #2: 1d100 ⇒ 34 - it looks like that is a pass even with a penalty.

Landolf makes a poor showing at the drinking game. Maybe he should stick to cards?
