Jevar Shadowmantle |

Jevar nods at Boodiddly's request and begin's looking around the library at the books that were removed or thrown, to see if there's a pattern to what is missing. Perhaps the ratlings were onto something in what they removed.
Search

Urzok |

"Big Gnome now, kills a rat and his whole life changes," Urzok grumbles, but throws a smirk at Boodiddly before working away at his pile of books.
________
Search while restocking the books if I can!

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

The amnesiacs search through the books, but finds little in the way of magical scrolls and whatnot, however, this place does seem to be a repository of knowledge.
This place is full of useful information, but requires Researching specific topics in order to find out anything of interest; and I will remind you that Winter said that the survivors only have about a week before they run out of food and other resources, so sitting down to do research in here isn’t exactly the best use of your time at the moment (and I’m not just saying that because I want to wait for the official Research rules to release in the Gamemastery Guide *shifty eyes*).
What do you do?

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Jevar looks up at the group, frustrated and a little tired of pouring over this place.
Look, he starts. If there are magical scrolls here I'm not finding them immediately. Maybe we task this ugly rat thing with continuing to look while we proceed. If we need to research a specific topic, we can return to this library to get good answers. Maybe our little friend here will have found something interesting for us. Sound good?
He looks around for quick consensus so they can continue their search for a path to the outside world.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

"'Ugly'? You're one to talk." Genny mutters.
I also want to know if you guys are planning on advancing to the door to the north or going back to check the other rooms to the south.

Urzok |

Urzok rubs his weary eyes for a moment, pulling his nose from a brittle tome. Could barely understand a damn word anyways.
"Good for me. Let's go back out and see where the other doors take us," he suggests while making sure his gear is snug on his body before approaching the door. Wouldn't mind getting the smell of rat s@~& out of my nose either.
________
IIRC, it seemed like the southern door of the room with the lone desk goes out of the building. Urzok would verify this, but then want to check all the doors down the hallway before heading through the northern library doors.

Shakur Hektat |

"Do we wish to find more information about, well, where we are? Maybe what kind of things were, like, kept here?"
Shakur doesn't care where we go

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Jevar nods at Urzok. Yeah, let's at least check that southern door, and if it doesn't work out we'll continue further this way.
He curtly looks Shakur's way but merely responses, Unless you've found a map of the Sanitarium, or info on big weeping eyes, I don't think we're going to find useful information quickly. We've lingered long enough here.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Well, alrighty then.
*
Briarstone’s supposed entrance just south of the library proves particularly difficult to open.
I know that I try not to keep asking you guys what you do with every little thing, but this one is actually important: do you guys want to keep trying to Force Open the doors or just move on (this would be one of those circumstances where it wouldn’t be feasible to “fail,” so a bad result would just mean that it takes longer)?

Boodiddly |

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
”Hmm,” Boodiddly comments, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. ”Does anybody have a crowbar? We might be struggling with this door for a loooooooong time otherwise. And Winter suggested we find someone at the middle of the manor, not outside. Otherwise they would have left already...”

Urzok |

Urzok kicks the door with a grunt. "Screw it, other doors don't take this much work." With a nod to Boodiddly, he heads for the next door. I'll keep an eye out for a crowbar though, we'll want it open eventually.
"Think there'll birds with human face in this one?" he jests, readying to open the next door.
________
Moved token to our proposed next door.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Well, it was worth seeing for ourselves. I guess that answers that question. On through the library it is.
He heads back to the double doors, only to find his familiar still pecking at it.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Alright, that’s all I needed to know. Back to the SDP!
Northwesternmost door
This door is likewise stuck, but not as much as the southern doors.
Urzok Athletics to Force Open: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 - 2 = 12
Urzok takes about fifteen minutes during which I’m going to assume that Jevar Refocuses opening the door, and when he does he knocks over furniture that was blocking the door from the other side.
A long desk, several chairs, a sideboard, and numerous once-stately landscape paintings barricade the door of this somber conference room. A toppled wall opposite the barrier undermines the room’s defenses, a point driven home by the bodies littering the ground. The head of every body is wrapped tightly by bedsheets, shirts, or grain bags that have been cinched around the bodies’ neck. Impressions in the “masks” show faces of horror that were desperately gasping for air in their last moments. They are wearing clothing very similar to those of the survivors in the chapel.
Jevar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Shakur: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Urzok: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Haha! I’m assuming that Boodiddly will want to use a Hero Point.
Boodiddly Hero Point Reroll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Urzok takes 2 sanity damage and Boodiddly and Jevar take 1.
Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 Going to hold off on telling you the result in case you want to use a Hero Point.
One of the bodies, dressed very similarly to Vaustin York, is wearing padded armor and holding a sap in his cold, dead hand.
Shakur: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Urzok: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Boodiddly and Shakur search the room very hastily, clearly not wanting to stay with the bodies, but Urzok finds two interesting-looking polished crystals and a ring made of gold worth 15 gp.
Jevar, with some alchemical fiddling, is able to determine that the two polished crystals are lesser thunderstones. Inventory Updated
Easternmost door
A massive pile of rubble completely submerges what the amnesiacs can only assume to be a door, based on the sign on the wall near the rubble that says “Employees Only.”
Northern door
High asylum walls hedge in this spacious courtyard garden. Only thin breaths of sickly fog seep in from overheard, though beyond it’s just as thick as ever. Misty wisps slip between leafless trees and simple benches, giving the impression of silent beasts prowling through the garden.
1d6 ⇒ 1
Dirty brown rain pours down from above, emerging from the fog that obscures anything 20’ above the grass. Like before, the rain burns the skin.
If you critically succeeded, open the spoiler below
Not wanting to be burned again, the amnesiacs go elsewhere.
Southern Doors
As though it had been plucked from the halls of some warm, country estate, this room is filled with inviting furnishings, a hearth ready for a fire, artwork populated by picnicking families, and a mansion-shaped cage with colorful taxidermic birds inside. Large windows might have once looked out over colorful flowerbeds, but now show only yellow mist. A battered corpse is impaled on the antlers of a stuffed elk head hung above the hearth while another lies beaten on the ground. Both bodies wear stained yellow sheets and have a chalk mark of a flame on their foreheads.
Shakur: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Boodiddly notices the faint sound of a chirping birds coming from the cage, but only taxidermic birds stand within. As anyone’s hands move close to any of the furniture, the chirping seems to become less pleasant and more angry. Boodiddly found a haunt (really annoying with this haunt’s flavor since its 1e stats say that they don’t start chirping until after the haunt is triggered, meaning that the party can’t detect it, which isn’t how hazards in 2e work).
Shakur pulls out his holy symbol and starts uttering a prayer in the name of the Lady of Graves to exorcise the disturbed spirits within the room.
Shakur Religion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
With the conclusion of his prayer, the chirping birds cease.
The flame chalk mark on the bodies, Jevar determines, are also magical sigils. Each of the bodies have a set of padded armor, a bottle of some liquid, and a low-grade silver dagger.
Jevar finds out that the bottles hold a minor elixir of life. Inventory Updated
East Door
Rustic flagstones create a path through a bed of wilted flowers and shrubs, the foliage shriveled as if drowned by the surrounding sea of dense yellow fog. Though the unnatural mist muffles every motion, a sound like the flapping of giant wings splits through the fog bank, causing it to swirl as if seeking escape. At the end of the rustic path, barely visible through the thin mist is another door. The mist to either side of the path grows thicker and thicker until looking beyond is practically impossible. Map Updated
Again, this is one of those circumstances where I need to know what you guys do here. Do you continue on or turn back to go to the north of the library?

Boodiddly |

Perception vs. DC 12: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
”Well that’s odd,” Boodiddly comments in the courtyard. ”I can hear flapping wings and growling, but they don’t seem to be coming from anywhere nearby. Perhaps they’re further out in the mist?” He shivers.
————————————————
”Um... maybe we should keep looking around inside?” Boodiddly suggests as the group ponders the garden path. ”Jevar wanted to look on the north side of the library - and the last time I was in a fog, bad things happened.” He wipes his nose without thinking.

Urzok |

"Door's close, worth a check. The rubble blocks the other door, this might get us through," Urzok suggests as he eyes the path, trying to perform whatever mental calculations he can to minimize his exposure to the fog.
"Wings though... Don't want to find out what owns them, but we could maybe try to fan the fog away here?" he offers, but it is clear he is grasping at straws more than anything else.
________
Hidden mechanics aside, it looks like a move to get to the door, an interact to (try to) open the door, and a move to either step in or get back. No idea the impact of a round in the fog, but that's an amount of time Urzok is willing to risk right now.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

during which I’m going to assume that Jevar Refocuses
He hadn't spent it yet, so no matter :)
Oh man, this might have been a very opportune time for Unseen Servant :P
Jevar peers through the miss, leery of simply moving towards it to push on the door.
Oreb, go see what's in the mist before we proceed...

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Soon after Oreb flies outside, she along with anyone else who makes a DC 19 Perception check notices that there are moving disturbances in the mulch and hears the faint sound of digging in the earth beneath.
What do you do?

Boodiddly |

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
”...Maybe we don’t want to go outside...” Boodiddly suggests from his safe position behind Shakur. ”There’s... something beneath the ground out there. Or somethings.”

Jevar Shadowmantle |

This "outside" is sort of an interior courtyard'ish thing, right?
Perception, DC19: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Jevar sighs audibly.
I agree. Our options forward continue to become eliminated as safe or viable. Here's hoping we haven't already disturbed what's here as we move on.
The wizard waits for his raven to return to his shoulder before turning away from this path.
I could have sworn we were going north out of the library at *some* point, but it's still closed on the map. Rereads the big post with the updated map in mind. I get it now.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Weekends are difficult for Shakur, but I’m 80% sure that he would agree with Boodiddly and Jevar and nope the hell outta there.
Oreb returns to her master just in time for the surface of the mulch to start to part, and the amnesiacs quickly shut the door behind them! They leave and start making their way back to the library.
Back to the Library
Map Updated The amnesiacs return to the library and are greeted by a ratling standing on the top of the bookcase directly in front of them, although it is not Genny Two-Tail. This ratling is older, with splotches of greying fur and a single eye which appears to have long since become blinded. He wears a cloak oddly fitted for him as well as a human-sized amulet that he wears more like a breastplate than a necklace.
”So!” The ratling screeches. ”You’re the ones who attacked my mischief?! You have earned the wrath of Ratch Mamby! Prepare to die!” Character Profiles Updated

”Agh! Ratch! Warn me next time!” The voice of Genny Two-Tail squeals from just above the amnesiacs’ heads, ruining her hiding spot. From out of the corner of their eyes, Boodiddly and Shakur notice movement from behind the bookcase as a pair of massive rats scurry out from behind them.

Same question as Boodiddly, except with regards to enfeebled! Stride, interact, strike.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Unless a condition (or the effect that created it) specifies that it has a duration or naturally reduces, the effect is permanent. Jevar knows that Ratch cast touch of idiocy, which has a duration of 1 minute, meaning that that’s when the condition ends. Urzok doesn’t know how long the enfeebled condition will last assuming it’s not permanent. Frightened specifies in the condition that it decreases at the end of the frightened creature’s turn, so that’s how it is; stupefied and enfeebled don’t have such a specification, so they’re permanent until taken away.
Also, as I specified during the Literary Drama fight, it’s a DC 10 Athletics check to Climb the ladder, and you can Climb it only if you have a free hand, so Urzok would need to Release his shield and critically succeed at the Athletics check to get up to the top of the bookcase and Strike at Ratch (you all are still only 2nd level characters, after all).
Urzok Athletics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 And that critically succeeds!

Urzok Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 Success
Urzok feels Ratch’s curse subside as he regains his strength once more! No longer enfeebled.
”Well this isn’t good. Let’s change things up a bit!”
Ratch Steps back from Urzok and Casts a Spell.
Ratch suddenly vanishes and reappears on top of the bookcase Genny is working at. He screeches at the other ratling in an unknown tongue and Genny frantically screeches back.

Well, besides the obvious, anyways." he taunts, hoping to buy time as he eyeballs the distance between his location and the other bookcase.
________
Long Jump?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
If we ever fight something in the 14-16 AC range, we're going to obliterate it! XD So GM, I'm not sure if this works, but here is the idea: Urzok needs to stride at least 10ft or his legs are physically incapable of jumping because ??? With his first action, he would back up, then his second/third actions would be for the long jump attempt. Also because ??? since he has to move at least 10ft and can't jump further than his move speed, does that make the leap to Ratch impossible? Can he "roll over" movement from the first action to compensate for this?

From my understanding, the distance you Leap with Long Jump is independent of the distance of your initial Stride, i.e. you could theoretically move twice your Speed, which would put it in line with Striding twice. Put simply, you Stride to one end of the bookcase, then Long Jump, which includes another Stride (which ends at the other side of the bookcase), then you do the actual jump, which can have a maximum horizontal distance of your Speed (25’). It’s not a two-action activity that only lets you move 25’ max, so all that is valid without needing your movement from the other Stride to “roll over.”
Genny ducks under Boodiddly’s crossbow shot as Urzok makes a great leap over to right next to Ratch!
”Impressive, but I’m a jokester, myself. Have you heard the one about the jumping orc’s fall?!”
Ratch begins to Cast a Spell right in front of the half-orc, but to the ratling’s surprise the half-orc lashes out at him![[R]]
Urzok AoO: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 10 + 1 = 29 Critical hit; you disrupt his spellcasting
Damage (doubled from crit): 1d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 1 = 12
Urzok swipes at the casting ratling, knocking him against the adjacent wall! Battered and bloodied, Ratch stumbles away from the half-orc, fear in his eyes.
“I’ll tell you all his secrets! Whatever you want! I don’t want to die!”
Genny looks on in confusion, unsure of what to do at this situation. Delays
Staying in encounter mode just for clarity about what you guys do. And it’s because of these kinds of situations that Sense Motive is spelled out as being a single action.

Jevar pauses to focus on Ratch, a little unsure of how honest his appeal is....
[[A]] Sense motive
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
The other two actions will depend on the result...

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Too bad that that's a secret check.

Jevar Shadowmantle |

Dammit, forgot that again... eventually I'll learn :P
I'm not listening to any more of his nonsense.
[[AA]] Cast (somatic, verbal) produce flame at Ratch.
Spell attack vs Ratch, Fire damage (inspired 1): 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 1 = 181d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9

Boodiddly |

”Wait... who’sh shecretsh?” Boodiddly also tries to understand what Ratch is saying, even through the fog clouding his brain.
Sense Motive. To try to keep things moving, I’ve got contingent actions in spoilers below.
Hand Crossbow, IC: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 5 + 1 = 23
Piercing damage, IC: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Dunno, Diplomacy? Intimidate? We’ll go with readied action to shoot a ratling who starts casting a spell, using the rolls in the previous spoiler for simplicity.

GM Xavier Kahlvet |

Jevar chucks a mass of fire at Ratch, but the fire seems to slink off of the ratling’s fur, only merely singing uh...gerund of singe, not of sing it.

"You little s~$*, you think I give a damn about what you want after all this?" Urzok laughs darkly. He saunters forward, raises his sword overhead with two hands and remorselessly brings it down towards Ratch.
