Every autumn, a few of the townsfolk from Kassen make a pilgrimage to the Crypt of the Everflame to light a lantern from the eternal flame that burns over the tomb of the town's founder and bring it back home, where it is preserved all winter, a symbol of the town’s resilience. Most years, the town mayor and a group of dignitaries perform this quest. Every few years, however, a handful of younger townsfolk are given the honor of lighting the lantern. Many see this as a passage into adulthood, a taste of adventure before settling down to work and marriage.

Introduction:
Hello everyone.

My name is Diaz, I'm an Italian guy of thirty-something years old who loves role-playing games in every form. I've been playing RPGs since 2002, starting with Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition, then moving to the subsequent iterations of the ruleset, until I approached Pathfinder.
I'm fairly new to the PbP scene, I'm currently playing in a game of Strange Aeons and one of Age of Ashes, both as a PC, but I want to try my hand at GMing in this game format. I have had few experiences as D/GM in F2F games, I've DMd mostly D&D 4th Edition (which I loved) for a group of kids back when it came out, but I'm sure I'll be able to be at least an OK GM here on the boards.
With this game I want not only to test my capabilities as a GM for the PbP format, but also find a group of nice people to have fun with. I want to make new friedns and grow both as a player as well as a person. I haven't been on the boards for much time, but I've seen a lot of potential in here to create a nice playing group like it is usual in real life.

What am I looking for:
For this game I'm looking for six players, both newbies and veterans, willing to take part in the Crypt of the Everflame module. My idea is to be able to run the whole Price of Immortality trilogy, but for now I think it would be better to commit for just the first part of it.
I'll be using only the Pathfinder Core Rulebook and the Pathfinder Character Traits Web Enhancement. Since this is my first attempt at GMing on the boards I want to keep things as simple as possible, thus this harsh limitation. So if you're looking for a place to play your tiefling gunslinger or kitsune shaman, I'm sorry but this isn't the right place for you.
I'm looking for people who can post at least once every 24h on weekdays, and maybe on weekends too, bar real life events that will obviously come first. I live in the GMT+2 time zone, and I will do my best to post once a day around 6-7pm. I also want people that will be open with me, that can politely point out my errors and help me grow both as a player and as a person.

How do you apply for the game:
Right now I'm not interested in character builds and stat blocks, since the players will build their characters after they've been chosen. At this moment what I want to know about you is:
  • -What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format;
  • -What is your favourite character class;
  • -What is your favourite race;
  • -What do you expect from this game;
  • -A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread).

I will try to form an heterogeneous group, especially in respect of experience. I will try to fill at least two slots with new players and at least one spot with a veteran player. I would also like to include in the party an experienced GM, which maybe can help me manage the game at the start.
Recruitment will be open for a week, until Saturday 24/08/2019. Then I will take a day or two to review every post and decide who will become a player character in the adventure. Obviously I will give priority to those who have never played the module before, but if you're an experienced GM who wants to replay the adventure for whatever reason and maybe help me refine my GMing techniques, you'll be welcome to apply.

In summary

  • -This is my first campaign as a PbP GM;
  • -Looking for six players, both newbies and veterans;
  • -Only the Core Rulebook and the Character Traits Web Enhancement allowed;
  • -Able to post at least once every 24h;
  • -Writing from the GMT+2 time zone;
  • -The players will build the party after being chosen;
  • -Recruitment will close on Saturday, 24/08/2019;
  • -Post not following the instructions about how to apply will most probably not been taken into consideration.

Please, if you have any question about the adventure or about recruitment feel free to ask here, the answer may be useful to other people as well.

That said, I hope to see many post in this thread, and be able to form a nice group of people to play with for quite a long time!

Nice to See a new GM trying their hand.

Though your taking a unique method of recruitment.

I don't mind giving a hand in running a game as I've helped GM's run a few games before.

Hi! I'm interested and I'd like to apply!

"What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format?"
I was introduced to roleplaying game by my dad. Since we lived in a small village, I never had the opportunity to play with a team until I joined Paizo when I was still in high school. I played for a couple of years and had to go on a three-year hiatus after getting my bachelor's degree because I no longer had the time to play. Now that my life has calmed down (and my English has improved), I've returned on Paizo and been playing for a year. I definitely wouldn't call myself an experienced player, especially since I'm only twenty-one, but I'm used to Paizo and its functioning.
I've not been very lucky in terms of games, and all my campaigns so far have sizzled out (sometimes very quickly) before we could finish. I've never played the Crypt of the Everflame module, but I'm more than eager to finish a game.

"What is your favourite character class?"
I don't really have one. I would say I am the least familiar with profane spellcasting classes, but I wouldn't mind trying one if I can come up with a character I'll have fun playing. I've played a couple rogues and a bunch of divine spellcasters, but I prioritize variety in the characters I'm currently playing, and tend to choose my class accordingly.

"What is your favourite race?"
I'm afraid I don't really have one either! Humans are certainly the easiest to play seeing how flexible they are class-wise, but roleplaying a character with a completely different outlook on life is so fun! I guess my answer would be the same as above: I tend to privilege variety in playing because I don't like to get stuck in the same role in different games.

"What do you expect from this game?"
I'd say I have a penchant for storytelling and character dialogues. I enjoy to watch characters in the team bounce off each other and find their dynamic, and I like compelling narratives and worldbuilding. But mostly I'm here for the fun, and to hang out with nice people! (no pressure! :P)

"A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread)"
Here's the background for my character Linge Hagebak, druidess for the campaign Reign of Winter:

Spoiler:
When they decide to start a family, most couples settle down in a cozy little nest, protected by relatives and friends. But like migratory birds, Joakim and Ranna Hagebak were always on the move, as Joakim’s job as a shipmate prevented them from staying in one place for more than a few months. Linge spent her early childhood watching the waves, feeding seagulls, and quietly listening to her mother’s soothing lullabies at nights, undisturbed by the other sailors who rarely joined in her games. Unfortunately, her parents’ marriage crumbled when she was twelve, as Ranna was obsessed with continuing their journey further down South. After one too many a row, Joakim went out for a drink in Oppara, never to come back. Ranna and her daughter were back on the road.
The following years were especially lonely. Despite Ranna’s job as a healer, people had always been distrustful of the tall, somber-looking woman whose eyes were of an icy blue, and whose strange, foreign accent had never completely left. There was sorcellery in her skills and pagan jewellery, callousness in her detached attitude. Rumours had it that she was a witch or a werewolf, and Linge found more comfort and kindness in the company of dogs, cats and chickens than of children her own age. To her great shame, she even started to become wary of Ranna’s silence and secrets, her inexplicable aversion to cold which could leave her in a state of extreme apathy during winter. Joakim’s stories about kings defeating dragon-like creatures to earn their crown were epic and rarely scary. Ranna’s dark, twisted fairy tales about little girls running away from swarms of living doll in a land of ice and marrying princes from other countries to live in an eternal summer were as fascinating as they were morbid. While taking care of crops, beasts and people, benefitting from her mother’s teaching, Linge secretly and guiltily dreamed of leaving her behind.
It all changed, however, when mother and daughter reached the small village of Heldren. Suddenly and surprisingly, Ranna finally seemed to settle down for good, and the tensions between her and Linge progressively eased. The young woman managed to get a job from the apothecary, and, despite the odd looks she was still getting from the villagers, she no longer heard any comments on her « evil » witchcraft. In the Border Woods, she found a peaceful, quiet natural space that she loved to explore -and when, one day, she returned home with a famished, orphaned white bear cub in her arms and a guilty look on her face, her mother only chuckled. Then, not even three years after their arrival, Ranna’s health started to decline. No longer capable of preparing basic medicine, forgetting meals on the stove and subjected to delirium, she was bedridden. An unexpectedly cold winter only made matters worse, and her sanity slipped further away. Not only did she constantly complain about being cold, and kept the curtains of her room permanently closed, she also started to refer to Linge as ‘ little sister ‘, screaming at her to go away one moment, and begging for her forgiveness the next. From what little Linge could gather from her mother’s nonsensical claims, she understood that she was under the strange delusion that Linge was a doll sent to kill her, and that Ranna was scared to death of seeing her appearing at the window. On an exceptionally cold night, her delirious rambles lasted for several hours, until she took Linge’s hand in her own, apologising about letting her ‘wander off’, and asking her ‘why she had to do that to Mom and Dad’ who ‘looked for her everywhere’, before breaking into heartwrenching sobs. She was buried in the forest before the first snowflakes. In Linge’s room, the curtains remain closed.
Baby, baby, rock-a-bye
Baby, baby, rock-a-bye
On the edge you mustn’t lie
Or the little grey wolf will come
And will nip you on the tum,
And will nip you on the tum
Tug you off into the wood
Underneath the willow-root.

Thanks for your consideration! :)

Sounds interesting! I've never played this module before.

What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format

I played Pathfinder in a face-to-face group for about 7 years (alternating as DM and player), and I've been active on these forums for about 5, both as a player and a DM.

What is your favourite character class
I tend to the leather-armor classes; rogue, ranger, druid, bard. Druid probably tops my list.

What is your favourite race
Human for mechanics, elf for fluff, but I've played most of the core races at least once.

What do you expect from this game
A good time! Heroic PCs with interesting dynamics, a world to play in, monsters to fight, and natural 1s at exactly the wrong moment.

A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread)
I'll follow up soon with a link to some of my posts here. My style tends to be a little shorter than some on the boards; I don't usually post more than a paragraph or three.

Hi there! I'd like to toss my hat into the ring as well.

Let me answer your questions:

RPG/PBP Experience: I've been a poster in games throughout the last decade or so here on the boards. I've found PBP to be a format which lets every person have their voice heard at the "table", so to speak. Most posters are kind and thoughtful, though occasionally you get some duds. Many years ago when I started playing 3.5 with my high school friends, the thespians would usually run the table. Though I tend to be on the more charismatic side of my real life groups now, finding the right dynamics of social interplay is hard face to face.

Favorite class: Wizard. I like the idea of a person challenging the impossible and changing the rules. Transmutation is my favorite school as a result!

Favorite race: Half-elf. Perhaps it's because I don't fit a lot of conventions myself, but I find a great deal of character in developing foundations from the mixed lineages. The aging differences, the cultural influences, and the physical traits all make for excellent development potential.

Expectations: RPGs should a great experience for all involved to build a story together. To this end, I'd like to think Crypt of the Everflame can lend a foundation of setting for the group and allow you as the GM to focus on the uniqueness the group recruited will have. Most RPG settings I play in are homebrew, so I will be new to whatever surprises lurk in the adventure path - and I like it that way! I also hope you get a chance to grow as a GM here - PBP is good for that.

Writing Sample: This profile is one I applied to a futuristic game with, but the background within should be a good sample!

Here's a couple of posts of mine:

-What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format;

I have about 25 years experience in RPG's, as far as PbP goes, I have loads of experience as a GM, but rarey get to play.

-What is your favourite character class; If we're talking CRB, It would be either cleric or rogue.
-What is your favourite race; Human
-What do you expect from this game; An interesting experience, also, since we're in the same timezone, the story might be easier to advance.
-A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread).

Spoiler:
Elindra had been awoken in the middle of the night by two elder acolytes, taken to the council chamber and left alone. Noone had said a word.

She waited there for what she estimated to be roughly an hour and a half in the pitch dark before she'd heard three figures approaching. She'd been grabbed by two pairs of forceful hands which had ripped and removed her clothing, covered her in an unknown, sticky and pungent substance, and then forcefully lifted her off the ground. Elindra had to fight her instincts to defend herself, knowing that this must be some kind of temple trial.

Finally, a voice spoke: "She is ready" There was no doubt, it was the mistress of novices. Elindra sighed in relief. The relief faded however as she felt a sharp pang in her buttock. A dart? Poison? Before she could focus, she felt her consciousness slip away.

Elindra found herself awakening in a small clearing in the woods. She was still naked, and smelling strongly of what she now realised was bear musk. That was a problem. It would attract bears, but it would warn any prey animals of her presence. She found beside her a whip, Calistria's chosen weapon, as well as two small daggers. Underneath them was a small piece of parchment upon was written simply: come home, you have five days.

With no idea where she was, Elindra's first move was to find water, she discovered a small stream where she washed off the smell, then she quickly oriented herself. First step was to obtain some form of clothing, food and something to carry water in.

What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format:
None
What is your favourite character class:
I like spellcasters but I am also open
What is your favourite race:
I pick whatever goes with the class I am playing
What do you expect from this game:
I am not really sure because I don't have much experience

Character Backstory from Other Application (2e):
Rodlen grew up with his Human mother in Breachill. He was very studious as a child, but that lead him to being bullied by other children. Most of the people that Rodlen interacted with wanted to become valiant warriors and treated magic as cheating because it "requires no effort". Rodlen, however, believed that taking the easier route is better, but he also knew that learning magic required devotion to a god, hard study, or getting lucky and having a magic bloodline. The arguments in his friend group went so far that Rodlen felt the need to prove to his friends that magic really was stronger. The way he decided to go about this was by learning to use arcane magic through study and intellect. Rodlen's way of thinking drew him to worship Nethys, the god of magic. He was a very intelligent child, and his studies of the arcane arts not only led him to power, but also to developing a new thesis about arcane magic, titled "On the Method of Shifting Preparations Within Limited a Short Time" After developing this thesis, Rodlen needed to draw attention to his thesis as well as proving that his beliefs were correct, he decided that he needed to become a famous adventurer in order to finally prove himself right.
(It is my plan that, over the adventure, Rodlen will learn that all members of the party need each other to truly succeed)

-What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format;
I started playing TTRPGs in the Spring of 2011 and started playing PbP here on the forums a few months later. I have played Pathfinder, GURPS, D&D 5e, Savage Worlds, Dungeon World/Planet, Monster of the Week, Fate Core, and have almost rolled some dice in a Genesys game that went belly up after about a week. I have GMed face to face, skype, and PbP games for almost as long, mostly Pathfinder, but I have run a Fate Core game and a GURPS game.

In the interest of being fair to players who have not played through this, I have played part of the Crypt of the Everflame and all of Masks of the Living God (and enjoyed three of my five favorite face to face sessions while doing so.) I have Crypt of the Everflame as well, though I don't remember most of it since it's been a while since I have read it. I have not ever played the third module in this series, nor have I read it.

-What is your favourite character class;
I don't really have one. If I have to pick, I'd say I enjoy fighters and Barbarians and tend to default to those classes.

-What is your favourite race;
Again, I don't really have one, though I tend to default to playing humans.

-What do you expect from this game;
To have fun, mainly. I love banter and character interactions. Whenever I start looking at feats like Leadership that grant you an NPC ally/cohort, I'm mainly interested in what kinds of character dynamics I can set up and not on the extra actions or whatever.

-A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread).
How brief are we talking? :P

There's a more complete list here if you're interested. I'm posting the five links that I feel capture me at my best.

1. Audria tells a story
2. Tera's planning
3. Tera tells the tale of the Pumpkin King.
4. If Eina was your sister.
5.Eina challenges a dwarf to a drinking contest.

And for your convenience, here's a sample that won't require a new tab.

Jotungier and Carrie:

The sounds of goblins chittering and hooting drew closer, carried on the backs of howling, snarling curs they claimed were the true dogs. Carrie's armor clinked and jingled as she bounced on her tall partner's shoulder while he ran for their lives. The nest shouldn't have been that large and organized, and the two of them were no match for the horde that came after them when the alarm had gone out. Carrie tried her best to not feel frustrated that she was too short to outrun the little green bastards and prayed that Jotungier's long-legged stride would carry them if not out of danger, at least close enough to help that they would not face the horde alone.

An arrow came streaking from the brush. Carrie barely had time to realize what it was and only her quick reflexes allowed her to bat it aside and away from her partner's exposed back with her halberd.

"I think their gaining on us. Can't you call on some spirit to help," Carrie asked, not fully understanding how Jotungier's powers worked, but knowing they let him perform feats of strength, speed, and stamina that could only be described as legendary.

"I fear I will need their aid soon enough," the giant of a man growled, "The green ones know the land better than I. They will find a way ahead of us before we can find aid."

"Great," she muttered, "just had to pick the goblins, didn't you Carrie. Now we're about to be dinner, or worse."

Good luck to everyone and especially the GM.

“What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format?” My first introduction to roll play dates back to the release of the first D&D basic set. (Ouch, that dates me quite a bit.) After experiencing the creativity of the game I was hooked. I have been on and off all the way through AD&D 3.5 wherein I converted over to Pathfinder during its beta. I have been posting on the Paizo boards both as a GM and Player since 2014.

“What is your favorite character class?” Mechanically I enjoy the diversity of inquisitor. That being said, I am comfortable playing any of the core classes, as needed, to fill any role.

“What is your favorite race?” Human, Dwarf, Gnome. In that order. I am generally open to any race if it helps to support a theme or story.

“What do you expect from this game” Hmmmmmm~~. Preferred gameplay. I like this question because it doesn’t get asked very often and over the years I have seen a lot of different GM styles. For me, I tend to prefer a well-rounded story with some depth to a character’s motive for participation. I’m ok with not being the most powerful piece on the board as long as the character and the game both have flavor. I enjoy groups that work well together and have a fair amount of spicy character interaction / personality. That being said, thumbs down on player conflict, out of character information being utilized in game, and games revolving around character advancement with little regards to story, background, or personality.

“A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread).” I think I will submit a character background that I enjoyed putting together. It’s a bit long and dark, but I believe it’s worth the read.

Trinity Vladu’s Background:

Between the wind and the heavy rain, the inclement weather had taken its toll on a nearby circus caravan. Heavy rainfall was not uncommon for Varisia this time of year. Over the last three days, the mud on the road had gotten to the point where the caravan couldn’t travel any further. In anticipation of the poor weather, the caravan leaders made preparations to camp for the night. A cadence of rain, being blown up against the side of the wagons, sounded like a miniature percussion serenade. Three days of repetitive rain, with no crescendo, no forte, nothing but a continuous tapping rhythm, which only gave way to the occasional crack of thunder.

In the back of one of the older wagons, a young girl sat, curled up in a warm blanket. Huddled close to one of the few lanterns still lit in the camp, she waited patiently for her father’s return. The old lantern provided only a small amount of light, in an otherwise pitch black night. Occasionally the wind would produce a deep howl, as if to let the young girl know she wasn’t alone. On those occasions the lantern would move just enough to cause the nearby shadows to look as if they had taken on a life of their own. The lightening, the shadows, even the thunder didn’t seem to worry her more than the mental images of what her father might be up to.

Trinity’s father had been gone for three nights, which was much longer then she was used to. She hated the loneliness that seemed to always visit in his absence. Her young body quivered with every thought of his return. The storm finally came cascading down with a crack of thunder that sounded like a tree being ripped apart.

She watched as her father’s silhouette staggered through the rain. With every ounce of her heart, she wanted to run to his aid. She loved him and feared him in the same breath. She yearned for his return even though she knew what it meant. He was her only connection in this world, her only friend, and her only family.

As he approached the old wagon, the light from the lantern finally revealed the truth of the night. He was dripping wet from head to toe. His dusky old clothes were torn in multiple places and he was covered in blood. His hand trembled as he dropped a small curved blade into a nearby puddle at his feet. The young girl, sickened with the thought of what her father had done, turned and bolted for the security of her warm bed. Curled up in the beds embrace she cried endlessly, knowing her father had once again claimed the life of an innocent young girl.
The caravan commonly traveled throughout the southern parts of Varisia and into Ustalav. It specialized in the unusual and hard to explain. Trinity’s father was an animal handler who supervised most of the performing animals in the caravan. People remember him as being one of the best in Varisia. History paints a much darker picture of the man’s private life.

Trinity spent most of her childhood watching the one person she loved, destroy endless lives. Her father preyed upon young girls between the ages of thirteen and sixteen. She never witnessed him in the act, but always knew when it happened. It usually didn’t take more than a day before she heard people talking about his horrific deeds. The darkness followed them from town to town as her father continued to indulge his dark appetite.

When Trinity turned fourteen she decided that she couldn’t stand by while her father killed any more young girls. She decided to tell someone about her father’s after-hours activities. It was a hard decision for a young girl to make. It was even harder to watch, as the Hell Knights brought his reign of terror to an end.

The rain had taken its toll on the hard clay streets of Magnimar. Trinity hoped the foul weather would postpone her father’s execution, but the city’s watch showed no sign of wear from the rain. She prayed for mercy on her father’s soul as the headsman placed a large wicker basket in front of thick wooden block. The look in her father’s eyes displayed panic as two muscular men escorted him over to the blood stained block. The headsman waited patiently for the proclamation that would signify the official beginning of the execution. Her father struggled against the two men as they forced him to his knees. He pleaded helplessly for his life, but found no mercy from the crowd that had gathered. Trinity’s lips tightened as the court arbiters proclaimed her father to be fairly judged and sentenced to death. By the end of the proclamation the two men pulled her father tightly over the headsmen’s block. Trinity tried to close her eyes but couldn’t look away. The headsman stood next to her father and then eyed the crowd for effect. With his powerful arms he raised the executioners axe high into the air. With every ounce of force he could muster he brought the heavy blade down with lethal force. The blow was precise, which severed the lower part of her father’s neck and a portion of his left shoulder. With no small effort, the executioner removed the axe from the block, which allowed her father’s head to roll forward, depositing itself into the wicker basket below. Trinity watched, with tear-filled eyes, as her father’s body began to spasm. His lifeless body struggled agents the finality of death. She watched, as his blood slowly mix with the heavy rain that ran down the stage and into the streets. She stood paralyzed, staring at the wicker basket, as the crowed began to dissipate. Soon she found herself standing alone, soaked to the bone, with nothing but a dark memory of what once was her only family.

Hungry and alone the young daughter of a killer found little sympathy from the local people of Magnimar. After hours of wandering the streets she was approached by members of the church of Iomedae, who had been informed of her sacrifice. Because of her willingness to turn her father in she had developed an ally of no small worth. Embraced by the church, she spent the remainder of her youth serving and growing within the order. Set on a new path of morality, she became an unbreakable beacon of law and an unshakable voice for good. Set with a new code to live by, the murder’s daughter eventual transcended to the title of inquisitor. Within days of receiving her new title, Trinity was assigned to visit Magnimar’s neighboring city Sandpoint, to experience the consecration of a new cathedral devoted to the city’s six most popular gods.

With that, I’m going to sign off with best of wishes to everyone.)

-What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format; I started playing around the time 3.5 started I believe. When fourth ed came out me and my friends weren't impressed but did run a campaign where I briefly dipped a toe in before getting uninvited. Eventually the bulk of our group transitioned to pathfinder and I've been playing it pretty much it's whole life and am genuinely excited by 2e. I've spent the last couple of years playing a rise of the runelord's campaign here on the site and while it's had some slow down at times we're still going strong.
-What is your favourite character class; Rogue with any arcane full caster coming up immediately behind it.
-What is your favourite race; I don't really have one. I like to keep switching it up.
-What do you expect from this game; A fun time and rezzing my favorite rogue the child Maria the great, one time gang member who fled her home to become an entertainer. I'll probably rewrite her origin for this though and go bard.
-A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread). I'll give you Maria's original origin story.

Maria was born in the slums of Absalom and raised by a gang. What would no doubt have been a ghastly fate being sold to a house of pleasure changed as the gang experienced her silver tongue over and over. They used her as the voice of the small gang delivery ghastly and ghoulish threats to any person not willing to bow to their demands.

To Maria these threats were little more than games that got the gang what they needed to survive. Eventually the group decided to try out the protection racket. Maria came up with yet another cruel threat, pay up or we'll make you watch as we burn your shop down with your children alive inside it. Maria expected the couple to buckle like so many did before but they saw something in Maria and believed she wouldn't follow through on her threats. They were right, but they underestimated how hungry the gang was to get some actual power as they proceeded to beat the couple nearly to death and make them watch the gang put their whole world to the fire.

Maria quickly plotted her escape from the people she once considered her family. With her heart aching she stowed away in a merchant caravan. In this way she made her way slowly from Absalom to Varisia and eventually to Sandpoint. During the trip she swore to herself that she wouldn't hurt anybody anymore and resolved to use her silver tongue only to tell delightful tales.

Well, that's it' Sadly she died to a ghoul about six months back and I'd like to resurrect her as the class she always should have been, a bard.

I am sorry but I have to withdraw my application.

Would you also like to be a player in the campaign? Obviously I wouldn't ask you to help me with matters concerning the adventure's story, but only with the technical part of GMing. If you want to be just a "shadow GM" it's fine though.

Hi. Hoping you are still accepting submissions as this definitely sounds interesting and I like your recruiting method. Keep it simple and have interesting characters rather than superman builds!

For the specifics:
Posting at least once a day shouldn't be any problem. I've had all but two games that I was in recently die without warning. The two remaining average 2-3 posts per week so they're OK.
I live in North Carolina, currently GMT-5.
Please feel free to point out my errors too, in forum or email. I've been playing for many years but I'm still human and make mistakes!

-What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format; I started playing D&D in 1977. PBP came much later when I was invited to the now defunct site d20WorldOfGreyhawk.yuku.com about 12 years ago. The "AGM" title came from there. I enjoy PBP when the game is moving. Definitely hate when people just drop without any word. I have GM'd a couple of PBP games but definitely prefer playing in them.

-What is your favourite character class; Casters. I really like wizards but I find any caster can be fun. It's all about the magic.

-What is your favourite race; Human actually. I've played most all in the games but frind that I usually gravitate back to human.

-What do you expect from this game; Fun! That's why I play the game.

-A brief writing example: Several years ago I played in a chat game and the characters started at 6th level. I decided to write a history including adventuring up to sixth level. I ended up only posting the first few levels for a witch that I played for that game. That history is here.

Would you also like to be a player in the campaign? Obviously I wouldn't ask you to help me with matters concerning the adventure's story, but only with the technical part of GMing. If you want to be just a "shadow GM" it's fine though.

I'll also be a player, as I could help stir things if things start to get stagnant.

What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format
Been on the Boards playing for about 5 years now, Started as a GM since it is hard for new comers at times to be accepted into games.
After that it became easier to get into PBP games.

Now I did start with TT playing of D&D 3.X ed in the early 2000s
Started DMing a year or two later after I learned more about the system.

What is your favourite character class;
After GMing and playing many roles as a NPC or PC, I got a good grip on most of them,
though I do dislike broken classes/Archetypes like the Summoner class (APG version) .

I also most of the time challenge myself by making a character with a semi-random Race/Class combos system I have

Now I do admit the only way I can stand to play/make a fighter is with a archetype(either APG or UCombat archetypes), and prefer the Ninja class over the Rogue class.

I also do have a liking of PrCs at times, especially during my D&D 3.X days.

What is your favourite race;
I have a preference for races with Human blood, though at a rare few times play a race without human blood.

What do you expect from this game;
I expect the GM to learn a lot from their first running of a PBP game.
As a player I expect the players and Gm to have fun, and do both combat and Roleplay (and not rollplay) their characters.

A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread)

Campaign I ran with Randomised characters (it was NPC heavy)
Character from a KM game.

Saw your post on the general discussion thread about GM'ing a PbP game, and thought I'd apply.

What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format
Been playing with my tabletop crew for decades now, mostly as a GM, but also as a player for short stints. In the world of PbP, I've been off and on over the years, but have been playing here on Paizo for at least a year at this point.

What is your favourite character class
Wizards have always been my favorite, but I also tend to gravitate towards paladins, clerics and the occasional rogue.

What is your favourite race
Elves for wizards and rogues, humans for paladins and clerics.

What do you expect from this game
What I hope to glean from any PbP game; to have fun and do some solid writing and character development.

A brief writing example
Here is a couple of posts from my favorite character I'm presently writing for; not suprisingly, she is an elven wizard. It's an excellent game with a great GM and a very strong group of players.

An intense moment of diplomacy

Combat!

I think this might be it for recruits joining this game, though this is my experience from running PBP....

I think the biggest thing holding back new recruits is the CRB only requirement.
Though this is a good thing to do for a new GM, as it'll stop all the really broken crap that can happen when every Paizo book is on the table.

I thought the same, though I will leave the recruitment open till Saturday as I've previously said, to give anyone interested the chance to submit their application.

Hello GM Diaz and welcome! Hope you like the experience and choose to stick around.

I have already played a few beginnings of PbP games. Groups have generally disbanded, but I hope to eventually play a story start to finish as I usually get attached to my characters.

My time zone is GMT-3 and I check games at least once per day on weekdays, but no guarantees on weekends. I have never GM'd a PbP game, but have a few homebrew tabletops of my own (two, to be precise). I particularly prefer a tabletop game, but PbP is enough of a fix for me, as grown up life has made it hard for me to meet with friends regularly. So, about the game pitch, I actually like the rulebook restriction, as I'm not much of a classes/archetypes digger.

What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format: Answered in the paragraph above. I have never played nor read Price of Immortality. Also, even though I sometimes experiment in a more general setting, I always get back to medieval fantasy.

What is your favourite character class: Arcane caster. Usually wizard, but I believe there's a sorcerer in my soul that is yet to flourish.

What is your favourite race: Half-orc/half-elf. To me, there's something about the half breeds which is very alluring. But I also understand the human's power (extra feat).

What do you expect from this game: First and foremost, a dedicated group. I want a concluded story, with highs and lows, tension and catharsis, challenge and partnership. Also, I want to feel that I contribute to the story, and not that everything would have just been equally developed regardless of the presence of my character. And finally, I expect that the game development will make me get to know interesting people, with whom I'll have a shared history.

A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread):

There was something wrong with the baroness, no doubt. Shir had already stopped being afraid of her elf heritage, which humans despised, but the thought of the baroness knowing of their plans put fear back into the rogue's heart. She turned to Christopher and quietly motioned him to follow her towards the indicated room in the palace. According to their information, the baron was hiding in that room.

Eager to learn what the baron would have to say about his wife, Shir though of ingesting a little bit of poison just to make her heart stop pounding so hard. The corridor was clear of guards, and it was dark. She could quickly reach the door in a rapid motion, but she knew that Christopher wouldn't be able to follow, not being able to see in the dark and all. She walked slowly, taking light steps and taking care that her companion wouldn't be too loud either. She grinned at the thought that he might start reciting one of his poems right now.

They reached the door, maybe not as silently as Shir had hoped, but they didn't seem to have called the attention of any guards. There was still the possibility that the information they had gathered would be a trap. The two companions glued their ears to the designated door and held their breath. After a few seconds, Christopher whispers I hear some harsh breathing. Shir noded at him in agreement, but then quickly remembered there was no way that he saw the nod. There was a faint light coming from inside, which probably came from a candle. The rogue kneeled pulling some tools from a cloth and started to quietly work on the lock. She hoped Christopher understood what was going on and didn't do anything reckless, as usual. After about half a minute work, she heard the door finally unlock

I've been looking at your recruitment thread, and you know what? I finally decided to pull the trigger.

What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format?
I’ve been playing tabletop games for about 15 years. Mostly D&D 3.5 and PF but I have dabbled in Savage Worlds, CoC, and Dark Heresy. With the disbanding of my IRL group and a new child I’ve returned to the Paizo forums for some PbP action. My first few games on here were back in 2017. This all goblin game disbanded shortly after starting due to the GM’s prior obligations. I then had to leave the boards for a while when my father fell ill and I left behind this Legacy of Fire game and this homebrew game. I actually have checked in on both recently and both games are still going strong with fantastic players and GM’s. Lately I’ve been applying to games left and right and have decided to try my hand at GMing a PbP game on-you know this part. I am signed up for a gameday PFS game and eagerly awaiting the call to action as the last PFS game with GM Zer0darkfire was a great experience.

What is your favourite character class?
In my youth I would have said Rogue (and MY character is a rogue) but over the last few years I have been drawn to Paladins. I usually have to tell myself that other classes exist.
What is your favourite race? Half-elf. Easy. Something about not belonging to either race is intriguing to me.
What do you expect from this game? A chance to be a PC and see where the character’s journey takes him. Not necessarily geographically but story-wise.
A brief writing example (a character background, an original story, a post in another gameplay thread).
Not too impressive as far as writing goes but I’m really proud of this moment.

Ela is a character I whipped up for a Return of the Runelords game. I’ve yet to play her but I absolutely fell in love with this character as her backstory came together.

Is this a PF1E or PF2E game? I am assuming 1E because of the allowed books, but just want to be sure.

-- david

It is PF 1st edition.

Ok thanks. Withdrawing.

What is your experience with roleplaying games and, in particular, the play-by-post format?
I first stared playing RPGs in college starting out with D&D 3.5. I’ve played with several different DMs in that time. After college, one of my friends DM’d several different games and systems: D&D 4e, Firefly, Numenera, Pathfinder, The Strange, and several others. My friend also introduced me to PbP. I’ve played a few games with him and a couple others as well. They’ve all died out within a couple of months. I’ve DM’d a couple of times in D&D 4e and Pathfinder. I tried DMing a PbP, but I ended up with a big difference in role players. One person would only respond with one line posts and another would write a novel. Needless to say, it didn’t last long. I admire you for taking on the DMing task. One thing I’ve learned is that a PbP has to be driven by the players posts. I think a lot of games I’ve been in die because people are waiting for someone else.

What is your favorite character class?
Of the core class, I’d say ranger. I usually try different classes when I can, but I like the nature aspect of the class along with the martial fight styles. Outside of core, I like the gunslinger. There something about early firearms and the potential for great shot or disastrous misfires that make the class fun.

What is your favorite character race?
Of the core races, half-elf is my favorite. To me, it’s about being human, but not quite. Half-elves have the potential to walk between two worlds, which can have its benefits, or it’s downsides. Outside of the core, I like shapeshifters like kitsune. There’s the ability to blend in, but still have a surprise up your sleeve. As a side note, my DM friend let me play a changling for a 3.5 campaign without the other players knowing. It was revealed when I drew a card from the deck of many things that sent my soul to another plane and my unconscious body reverted back to its natural form. It shocked everyone and made for a great session.

What do you expect from this game?
I expect participation and commitment from everyone to keep the game alive. I hope for interesting characters, growing character bonds, and some hilarious scenes. I don’t want people to be so concerned with ‘winning’ that it ruins the fun.

A brief writing example.
Here’s a link to another board with an example. This was for a game using Numenera. I was partially a data ghost and would unconsciously travel through time. This thread was for when I was in the past and not with the rest of the party (i.e. not at the session).

Wow, what an interesting way of recruiting!

Anderlorn wrote:

Is it really that peculiar?

I thought that choosing people based on their play-style and writing abilities would make more sense rather than choosing a team based on the character concepts/builds every single player brings to the table. Building the party after the group is formed gives the players the opportunity to create a team of characters which complements one another, while forming a team with already built characters often requires adjustments to those concepts, or even drastic changes to the concept one had in mind.

Maybe I'm just weird and inexperienced and thought this would be the best course of action. We'll see.

Don't worry, you do whatever way you want. But yes, most GMs review your character crunch, background, personality, description, and some of the questions you asked. Most GMs just let the players get together to form bonds and write it into their background before closing recruitment. But you do what you want to do, the GM/DM is the boss. Who knows, maybe this is a better approach?

I've run a few experimental games like the one where all the player characters were semi-randomly generated.
Folks ended up enjoying making these characters, as they were interesting, and some were given interesting ideas/concepts they didn't think of before.

I actually think it makes more sense to do it your way. It forces something akin to a session 0. I think the main reason it tends to be done the other way around is that with how many people tend to submit, the GM tends to have a wide variety of characters to choose from. I know I previously ended up with about 4 or 5 solid party compositions. And I think that's what I needed.

I think especially with a new system, it'll be nice to work out who is making what, and character backgrounds/story before investing the time. A lot of the 2E recruitments that went up earlier this month used a similar selection method.

Sure, if I was going to make this a 2E adventure I would have asked for the ABC (Ancestry, Background, Class), but since we don't really have something like that for 1E, I chose to simply ask the players their preferences, expectations, and experiences, to form a well-rounded team first, and a good party then.

Technically you could use the 2nd ed character creation system in 1st ed.
The only thing that would be imported in would be the background component.
So it'd be CRB (Class,Race,Background)

GM will have his choices up in about 2 hours at around about 21:30 (GMT+2)
Provided Murphy doesn't send his gremlin minions.

Good luck everyone!

That's more like 14 hours according to the clock

Good evening everyone.

I know it's a bit earlier than what DM Azure_Zero said, but since I have already chosen which of you will accompany me in this adventure of fun and personal growth, I thought that anticipating the moment of the revelation wouldn't hurt anyone.

First of all, let me say that the decision was tough. You all are experienced and gifted players, I didn't thought that so many of you would answer my timid call on these boards. You have all many years of RPing on your shoulders, many experiences, you have all faced many quests, adventures, campaigns, it wasn't easy for me to decide whom among you people would fit the team I want to play with.

Now, without further ado let's reveal the names of the six lucky players that will become the new Heroes of Kassen (and hopefully beyond)!

  • AdamWarnock;
  • Chapel Ty'El;
  • DM Azure_Zero;
  • GM Taban;
  • Nightfiend;
  • Ruin Explorer.

I will soon open the Discussion thread to start talking of character creation and other technicalities. I also want to thank everyone who applied, because your interest have given me the strength to pursue this little project of mine.

So, thanks for stopping by and I will hopefully see you the next time I'll open a recruitment for a new campaign.

To everyone good night, and good luck!

Have fun y'all.

Discussion is thread is open.

Have a nice game!

Well I can't say I'm not disappointed (and a bit bitter), but I won't be a poor sport. Enjoy the game you all.

Yep. Enjoy.
