DAY TWO
The next day, one of the scouts led the refugees miles deeper into the forest to a more secure location. The other followed behind erasing what he could of the trail left behind as they moved.
Meanwhile, the party decided to break away and head toward the logging camp.
Because many of the trails are single file, can I get a marching order?
DM-Camris |
Terrain in the Fangwood is difficult.
Rolling hills, gullies, sudden drops, house-sized boulders, and thick stands of undergrowth make for a confusing and treacherous landscape that generally prevents travel in straight lines for more than 100 feet at a time.
Trees grow over 100 feet high and blot out the sun in most of the forest, leaving the forest floor in a perpetual twilight and often supporting entirely separate ecosystems in their upper branches.
Though beautiful, the constant switchbacks and shifting terrain make travel hard for even seasoned rangers.
Arlen Ducote |
"We should not tarry long in seeking out the rangers. I certainly approve of keeping the people in the forest; they would slow us down. After this logging camp we should make for the rangers. We must gather our forces and establish lines of communication."
Arlen then agrees to take up a position in the back with Russet and his bow.

As the party nears the camp, Arlen notes some surprising tracks. " What are pen animals doing loose in the woods here?" he wonders to himself. A few moments later he hears some noises "... There's my answer. Do you hear that? The yipping and laughter? It doesn't sound human... Gnolls, perhaps, or maybe goblins. We should sneak ahead and figure out where it's coming from. But I'm afraid the camp may have been taken by less than friendly folk."
Arlen volunteers to scout ahead with Russet. Not to engage, but to stay out of sight and get a glimpse of what is happening in the camp.

Faerieth feels both at home and awash with wonder at the beauty for the forest. So caught up is she in their environment, that she misses the tracks until Arlen points them out. Nodding at his suggestion, the druidess whispers to her companions. "I might be able to get us a glimpse of what lies up ahead." she says reaching for a vial of a milky liquid the color of a robin's egg.

The halfling was sure that they were heading the entirely correct way, not that he had ever been to the logging camp more than a time or two before. Despite being well aware they were in dangerous lands he found himself lightly almost dozing off.. until his wolfdog mount began to growl lowly. He growled and began to move forward until he managed to make it clear to all the folk something was amiss in the woods.
DM-Camris |
Faerith: Yes you can hear a few birds in the area. Most have moved out of this area due to a disturbance up ahead.
A shadow beneath the tree marks the mouth of a den dug deep into the soft earth.
A tuft of pale gray fur clings to the edge of the hole, and a musky animal stink lingers in the air.
A swarm of small fey looking humanoids howl and titter with glee as they surround a den. A wounded wolf snarls and snaps around her as the mites torment her with torches and spears. Frightened yips come from a tormented wolf cup held out of reach by another mite.

Now they're facing off against what sounds like wolves. The birds call them fourfooted runners" she relays to her companions as they prepare to move forward.
Warbling a soft 'thank you' the druidess hefts her staff. "I can direct the undergrowths to entangle and entrap them, making it easier to take them ut with bows and such, but moving in to fight them directly would risk getting entangled as well."
