5E Adventure's in Midgard – North (Reaver's Spring)

Game Master Tareth

A small merchant caravan led by Rook Bentknee, a kobold merchant, travels up the coast of the Bay of Ghed to deliver goods and trade with Rook's former adventuring companion and occasional business partner, Britta Gleamgaurd, human owner of the Frost Maiden Inn in the village of Nargenstal.

Since this was basically a good way to explain his disappearance all of his equipment is still available and would return upon his return to the 'material plane.'

We've been using Tasha's options since it came out, so yes, those are okay.

How close is it until the Winter Solstice? The sword was said to wain the dryads power, peaking at that celestial event, perhaps facilitating Scrams escape.

Hmmmm...we're in late summer game time. But since the dryad is somewhat 'limked' to the magic concealing the sword, it's possible recent encounters could have distracted/weakened her enough to allow Scramsax to escape. The most obvious is when Vrindel took the sword into the Shadow Plane. I'm pretty sure that could come as a shock and surprise.:)

That could also be a link to why you end up in Shadow Plane. Using the swords 'presence' in the dryad's psyche to escape you end up near its actual physical location. Instead of being inthe wizards tower, you could have spotted the others soon enough that you could follow them to where they are now. Especially since they are currently your best and only opportunity to make it back to the material plane.

Oh, alright, I was thinking they still had the decoy for some reason. The sword acting as beacon would be perfect I think.

I was planning he would escape (and steal the sapphire orb) by waiting for/encouraging the dryad to tree walk, then since all World Trees are linked by Yggdrasil he could end up anywhere (including the shadow plane it seems? scant info on pg47 of the World Book, but sorta seems so). Like a psychic split when she is tree walking that takes Illarya off one branch, and Scram another when they are in that gooey, metaphysical sap form.

As far as I know, we ARE carrying the decoy…it is just a really good one.

Okay, my fault. You all have the decoy which she created. Still the link between the decoy, the real thing, and the dryad would be enough of a link to work. In fact, if you go with the Tree Walk, it would make a bit of sense. She is drawn back to the real sword and her strongest magic hiding itand her tree. In the moment of transferance, she's weaker. Scram can chose either path. One to the tree and back into her mind, the other to the only other connection she currently has in Midgard, the decoy. All seems plausible. :)

Weird, I think I lost a post here in discussion somehow. Was just mentioning the mechanical changes...basically just replaced the thief's Fast Hands and Second Story Work with Psionic Power and Psychic Blades.

This video has Crawford talking about the soulknife and is pretty funny, but also some good subtle details there.

Yeah when I first read through it I wasn't really intrigued, but at a closer glance there's some potential for coolness. That video really makes me laugh because they are soooo blown away by how the knife doesn't leave any wounds. XD

Also, haven't played a psionic thing since a 2e psion in like 2003, so feels pretty fresh and exciting.

I missed this little detail with how my Psionic Energy Die work:

Quote:
The first time you use this power after each long rest, you don’t expend the Psionic Energy die. All other times you use the power, you expend the die.

So changing my count back to 6/6 in status line (I had marked one with the unicorn).

edit: Wow, totally missed this as well:

Quote:
In addition, as a bonus action, you can regain one expended Psionic Energy die, but you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest.

That should help me be less stingy with those.

So I was reading back up on Mnemosyne for some inspiration and found a bit about her I hadn't found before:

'Mnemosyne is a mask of the universe.' O_O

'She is the universe in humanoid form.' O_o

She controls memory and time but her control is weak since imprisoned.

Her appearance is a fey siren teenage girl.

Then there is a confusing plot where her husband Nethus (king of the sea) was kidnapped, and her memories of him were stolen. Somehow this developed to her being imprisoned with him (in Straboli), with her tears sustaining his heart (and being used by the captors, Kammaens, to make magic). Then finally, Nethus got out somehow and remarried Hecate the Moon goddess but meanwhile Mnemosyne is still trapped and forgotten.

Her name only appears once in the World Book and zero times in the Heroes Handbook, so I'm going to stash this info in my profile.

For the Psychic Blades, I'm imagining they resemble this kind of primitive stone blades only hot pink with white sparkles. ;P So when thrown at impossible speeds they 'suggest' the same noise those irregular sling stones would.

Ah. Sorry about that. Missed it yesterday. It hits on a 20, so hits with just the shield which is what I saw in your earlier post. It'll miss a 24 if you do the ward as well.

Got it. Gunnar almost always has his +1 shield equipped, but the reaction was to cast the Shield spell, which gives him the +5 ac for one round and activates his arcane ward, which was my intent with the post.

The 16 AC (sans +1 shield) is in case he is surprised while eating or relaxing or something and doesn’t have his shield equipped.

Is the shield+1 your arcane focus? Shield spell has somatic components needing 1 free hand otherwise I thought. On your reaction you wouldn't be able to Use Object to stow the warhammer for a free hand and cast. Or how are you getting around that? Sorry not trying to be an ass, just curious.

edit: ah nevermind, you are calling shocking grasp your 'hammer' not actually using a warhammer

Right, the ‘Warhammer’ is actually a stylized arcane focus made out of Lamannian Oak (a common magic item). That’s where he gets his +1 damage for thunder and shock spells. He doesn’t actually use it to hit with, though I suppose he could try. It would technically count as a Staff, I think—just reflavored for more dwarfish idiom goodness.

Kali's more of a support character. She has mainly illusion and healing spells in her repertoire. Her main role in combat has been holding back and plinking stuff with arrows.

She does have disguise self, so she might be able to pull of the kind of deception you're suggesting.

Honestly, though, I haven't really played Kali enough to get a real solid handle on how she best fits in both in and out of character.

Nice, I'll have to go back and read why Kali has the Thorspear, I missed that part.

So, what's the big idea with Kali? Is she basically trying to remember her past? Scram will happily prod personal details if you want to get into it in game at some point.

A valkyrie inhabited the Thorspear and Aterro couldn't handle her sharp tongue. Kali has some skill as a smith, and took it up since he stabbed it into the dirt.

As for the big idea behind Kali. I think it's less about finding her memories and more about finding a place to belong or maybe a purpose beyond simple survival. In either case, feel free to have Scram poke and prod. My favorite part of TTRPGs are the character interactions and banter, so bring it on! :D

Will do! Scram has been sort of stuck in his head since returning. While that's insanely fun for me to write, and sort of necessary to explain the subclass change, it hasn't been very social or engaging the party. I'm a fan of such interactions as well.

Smithing? Scram has a magic dagger that hasn't really been explored that much. My original character Zove's octopus familiar found it in a treasure chest under the sea, and Scram stole it when he entered the game. Maybe we could develop that and use it to connect the characters. I really don't know anything besides its name and properties. (Morrinn's Misery, +1d6 cold)

I was sort of thinking it took the form of Coin when he was imprisoned in the dryad (since all his possessions entered the mental space with him), but I left it open in case Tareth wanted to make that someone else.

I apologize for my relatively slow posting rate. This game has challenged my imagination. It's the first time in my 40 years of role playing experience that I feel my imagination is too small. Meaning, despite Tareth's amazing writing, I struggle with how Vrindel should react to what's going on. It doesn't help that the druid doesn't have many skills to assist.

Bottomline, I'm still here having fun trying to play through my challenges. Feel free to pull Vrindel along.

Yeah, I loved Ibrox's interactions when I was reading through the thread the first time, and I've enjoyed Vrindel both before and after you took over. Play what you would like to play, even if we have to say bye to our big, green, druid-y friend.

Speaking of reading the thread. I'd completely forgotten that the Thorspear was the macguffin in the very first adventure of the game. It was one of those moments of "Oh crap! Did they seriously let the new guy have one of the most important artifacts they've recovered?" when I read about it again.

This really struck a nerve for me. I, too, have been struggling to stay relevant. Every post I read and every post I write has me thinking "I wish I was still playing my Artificer so I would have more to contribute." A Crusader of The Good Fight doesn't seem as welcome a player in a twisted-up magic-scape as would be a twisted-up magic dabbler. Well, there's always a chance I could try again later.

To echo what Kalisuel is saying, I never really understood why you put aside Ibrox in favor of Vrindel. It didn't seem like the kind of thing you would choose to play, and the character was sort of designed to do a certain thing (to juxtapose being an outcast race and an isolating class) that never really seemed to form an enjoyable play-experience.

By all means, follow your muse. Tareth has already agreed to let me do a bit of a re-work of my character at the next opportunity. It would fit the narrative to have a bit of shake-up. (And I wouldn't feel alone. =)

Thanks for the support. But please let me clarify. It's not my character per se. Sometimes, characters have the right skills for the right adventure, like dwarves in a dungeon. I'm alright with Vrindel not fully fitting into the current adventure.

The real issue is me. I feel like this adventure is on par with the Matrix, Dr. Strange, or that other movie that I never saw about folding reality. I'm struggling with taking it all in and reacting.

Maybe if I did play a character where folding reality was its thing, it would be easier, but I don't know what that would be.

Does that make more sense?

Yeaaaah. That's the good stuff.

Vrindel, thanks for the heads up, I was beginning to wonder if you were still with us. Sorry you are having a bit of a struggle with the current set of circumstances. However, I'd say it is perfectly fine to lean into that difficulty wrapping your head around things. Being a druid and thus into the solid, fairly rational and consistent laws of nature I could see where dealing with the warping and rending of space/time and opening of some kind of planar void gate that is influenced by the mad ravings of a wizard who may or may not still be sane at this point would have him at a bit of a loss.

And of course now you have a target rich environment to focus on, so at least there's a distraction available to keep from staring at the Dread Walker and the shifting multi-colored sky above. ;)

A couple of points. First, the spear did want to not be next to the machine and she initially thought she was going to Gunnar a fellow Thor believer and lightning slinger. Second, he hasn't tried actually using the spear. Third, it technically wasn't the monster/inanimate objects turn yet. Time will yet tell the ramifications of such a move for all parties involved. ;)
