Taliesin's Way of the Wicked

Game Master Merddyn

The Kingdom of Talingarde is the most noble, virtuous, peaceful nation in the known world. This is the story of how you burned this insipid paradise to the ground. It’s only fair. They burned you first. They condemned you for your wicked deeds. They branded you. They shipped you to the worst prison in the kingdom. You were supposed to die there. Instead you escaped. Now it's time for your revenge.

Guilty. You are a lawbreaker – the worst of the worst. Too dangerous to live amongst the good people of Talingarde, they dragged you in chains before a magistrate and condemned you. They sent you to the worst prison in the land and there they forever marked you. They held you down and branded you with a runic F. You are forsaken. You won’t be at Branderscar Prison for long. Branderscar is only a holding pen. In three days – justice comes. In three days – everything ends. What a pity. If only there was a way out of this stinking rat-hole. If only there was a way to escape. If only . . .

No. No one has ever escaped from Branderscar Prison. This is where your story ends.

I am looking to run a Way of the Wicked campaign. Read below if you are interested.

About Me:
I have been playing Pathfinder for about 8 years now, and GMing for about half of that. This is my first foray into PBP, but it is something I've watched for a good long time. I am excited to play, and want to create a great experience for us all.

I usually try to play RAI, but in the end I want us to have fun and have a good story. If a change in the rules fits the story better, then I'm going to choose the story first.

Expectations:
I am planning to run this all the way through. If you're not planning on playing this till the end (which means likely a year or more), then I'd suggest looking for a different campaign. This is definitely going to be a lot of work. Speaking of a lot of work, if you are new to PBP, then check out Doomed Hero's guide to PBP for a little help in getting started. Secondly, for everyone involved, I'd like to suggest that you check out Painlords Advanced PBP guide, even if you've seen it before, it's always good to get a little review of these helpful principles of PBP. I expect players to use these principles. This is a fun, collaborative story. My goal is for us to build a story together, and that's what I hope you'll be doing to. I'm looking for more roleplayers than rollplayers, though this is Pathfinder and there will be plenty of that. That doesn't mean I'm looking for novelists, but I am looking for people who are willing to help put hooks in their posts and respond to others' hooks.

I expect you to post once per day, M-F. I'm not going to require weekends, but it wouldn't be a bad thing either. If you are going to be away for a hiatus of any sort, please let us know ahead of time if possible. When it is not, please let us know as soon as possible. If you are applying, you are telling me that you are willing to send me a PM with a form of RL contact information should you be selected (I'm mostly looking for email, but if there is something that you'd prefer to give, I can live with it) so that I can contact you should there be any issues contacting you on the boards. I might also be creating a discord for this, though I'm still undecided on that point. I will be using Roll20 for maps. I expect that you will read posts of me and others before responding, that being said, I will not accept any applications from those who have not read through this. Therefore to show that you are listening, send me a PM letting me know you read and understood these expectations to complete your application.

Character Creation:
•Focus/Foible method for your stat generation. This means choose one focus stat (18), one foible (8), then roll 1d10+7 for all others in order. If your stats fall below a 25 pt buy, then go ahead and build it up to that, though you can't drop anything below what the dice rolled.

•Races: Core, Featured or Uncommon. No alternate heritages. Please note that portions of this campaign require you to blend in, so some races will have a disadvantage there.

•Alignment: LE, NE, LN or N. LE preferred. If you are not LE, make sure to share what will make your character work within a LE organization. In addition it is preferred that you follow Asmodeus. If you do not, make sure to share why you would work with an Asmodean group.

•Classes: All paizo. Unchained version of the Summoner Required. Antipaladin can be LE worshiper of Asmodeus. Because of the way this AP starts, Vigilante class will not have access to their social identity until after they escape the prison. No 3PP

•Background Skills are in effect

•Two traits, one a campaign trait, which can be found in the campaign tab. You can take a drawback for a third trait, but make sure it is played as such.

•Starting Wealth: Nothing except some dirty rags that some might call clothing. You are in Branderscar prison after all.

•You need a background that matches what you built. For information on Talingarde, see the Campaign info tab.

•I am looking for 4 or 5 players. Recruitment will end 12/14/18 at midnight my time (GMT-7).

Strength 18
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Wisdom 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

ouch

So adjusted to 25 point buy: 18, 12, 13, 13, 8 12

Str: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Con: 18
Int: 8
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
---------------> Cha: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

One point shy of the 25 buy, so let's bump that Dex up to 9.

Will have to ponder on this, but my initial thought is some species of Monk - Dex be damned.

When you say -
"No alternate heritages."
- do you mean things like the Aasimar tables, or the three oddball versions of Oread? Or, do you mean any alternate racial traits at all?

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
18

I'm thinking about a mesmerist. We'll see what comes up.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Good question, Alternate heritages include the things like the Aasimar tables (the ones with things like Angel-blooded, Azata-blooded, etc.) and the oddball versions of Oread. Pretty much, you get the standard version of the race you pick.

Alternate race traits on the other hand are entirely acceptable.

Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Intelligence: 18
Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Charisma: 8

Adjust those 9's up to 10s for 25 pt buy. Looking at a Human Synergist Witch with the Consorting with the Dark Powers trait. More details to come.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

That looks like the beginning of a pretty good spellcaster of some sort. I'll see what I can do.

Strength: 18
Dexterity: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

EDIT: Format, too used to mythweavers

Bumping either Int or Dex up a point, not sure yet.

Well I was thinking Inquisitor, but that wisdom score negates that idea.

Cathirix:
– NE Male Human (Dual Talent) Slayer – Crime: Dueling unto Death
Stats: 18, 14, 15, 13, 8, 12. HP: 12 AC 12/12/10 - F: 5, R: 4, W: -1 +2 vs Charm and Compulsion.
Skills: Appraise, Sleight of hand, Acrobatics, Bluff, Climb, Intimidate, Knowledge Local, Perception, Swim
Traits: Dueling unto Death, Birthmark

Cathirix was always a s!~+ty person, rude, crude, and irreverent. He was constantly in trouble, fights and petty theft mostly, but after his mother’s passing two years ago he entered into a severe downward spiral, petty theft became robbery and burglary, and fights became deadly duals which he was becoming good at and enjoyed far too much. While gravely illegal, dueling rarely had consequences, the loser was dead and typically any observers understood that it was agreed upon by the participants of their own free will. Unfortunately for Cathirix he got sloppy drunk at a tavern and bragged to an off duty city guard about the man who’s eyes he had shut for the last time earlier in the day. The next thing he remembers he was walking up clapped in irons in a caged wagon. ”Little over kill for skipping out on a bar tab,” Cathirix laughed rattling the chains, but when he was branded with the telltale “F” he knew what he had been nabbed for.

16 y/o shoulder length Dark hair, 5’10”190 lbs. Five point start birthmark where his neck meets his shoulder.

      Cha: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

One point shy of 25 point buy, so I'll bring wis up to 10.

My phone isn't cooperating with where I want the 18 and 8 so hopefully it's okay to do that when I get to a computer.

I would like to Dot-

@ALL, I've done some considering. I thought I would like the Focus/Foible System, but I've watched several people go through it and how it's really messed up the possibility for certain builds. I'm going to make one adjustment to it that I think should fix these problems. Ahem . . . Rolled stats can now be set in any order. There I think that should fix the issues I've seen with this system.

Wocket Daergle:
Female Gnome Socerer - Crime: Arson
STR:6 DEX:18 CON:10 INT:15 WIS:10 CON:16, HP7, FRT:0 RFL:4 WIL:2
Skills: Cr:Alchemy, Appraise, | Bluff, Spellcraft, Use Magic Device, Kn:Arcana
Traits: Arson, Focused Mind

Talingarde had their hands full with Wocket from her very birth. Her mother, Qibys, was a notorious sorcerer, and was only brought to justice because she was heavy with child at the time of her capture. Yes, this is Wocket's second visit to Branderscar, and somewhat of a tearful homecoming. When she was first brought into the world in a prison cell, Mitra found no justice in killing even an obviously dangerous babe. Perhaps that was a mistake...

More to come...

Over time, strix have developed a hatred for humankind and now fiercely protect their dwindling numbers.

Seems perfect! Will roll one up shortly. Thinking a Strix ranger who worships Asmodeus and who seeks vengeance against the humans who expanded into his homeland.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Wow, those are some good rolls! That comes out to a 48 point-buy. I will have to think about what to make

I've always wanted to do this campaign. I have a solid concept, a very rogue-ish ratfolk summoner-- let's see what I roll!

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

I can totally work with that. :)

Would it work against my chances of recruitment if I wanted to keep Wocket? The challenge of making something out of that stat line really endeared her to me.

Edit: I guess I mean, is mechanical viability a major qualifier, or is it mostly rp/background that will get someone picked?

Are there any prominent named members of the Mitran clergy?

I am mostly choosing on rp/background. Any weaknesses can be overcome, and it makes it more interesting to have them and show them. I was just concerned because I could see how it had made some classes completely untenable, and the one thing I don't want is to close off avenues of storytelling.

Jagael wrote:

The most prominent is High Cardinal Vitalian of Estyllis, the High Cardinal over all the church. There are various others, but most of them would be prominent locally rather than nationally. If that target is too high a target for your character, feel free to make up a prominent member of the clergy for your hometown.

No idea on class yet. But the basic characte concept:

Kasit and his Strix lived on the border of Talingarde for generations. Their eeries were isolated for centuries, until prospectors learned of the rich minerals present. Human expansion led to conflict, and soon tales were told of the winged blacked skinned devils of the mountains and bloody slaughter. The first wave of prospectors turned into settlers, who in turn brought armed forces. Fierce resistance and atrocities committed by both sides led to an inevitable holy war. Clerics, paladins and inquisitors came, and in numbers unable to be resisted. With heavy hearts the Strix, labeled murderous barbarians at best and devils at worst, were forced to flee their Ancestreal lands to go further north.

Kasit, the son of his tribe’s slain chieftain, argued against fleeing. He looked upon the humans with abject hatred. When his tribe fled, he remained. Out of spite, he attempted to do what little petty revenge he could. Descending into one of the border towns, he attempted to desecrate one of their temples, to do to the humans what they had done to his people’s lands. One last act of revenge until he too fled.

He was instead caught. A rare catch, to get hold of one of the ‘winged devils of the north.’ Branded with the ‘f’ of foresaken, he has been sent to Branderscar Prison. His wings have been mutilated and deformed, lest he try to flee. Now he awaits execution, and dreams of nothing but striking back at the hated Talingarde.

Still don’t know what class to pick. Thinking air kineticist might be fun, even though the stats aren’t perfect for it. Dex16 Con18 should be good enough.

Character is ready. Made an elemental annihlator. Archetype seems interesting, as it is pretty much a martial that is never Unarmed and can summon his own armor or shield.

Should thus be a versatile switch hitter. Able to mix it up wherever needed.

Thanks for letting us move the ability scores around, made this very doable. A bit weak in some areas, but that makes it more fun, right?

Still a work in progress, mainly turning the background from an outline into prose, but mostly complete. I will use this post to update the backstory in the next few days.

Sartur Holt:
Sartur Holt
M LE Dwarf Inquisitor1, Level 1, Init 1, HP 10/10, Speed 20
AC 11, Touch 11, Flat-footed 10, CMD 15, Fort 3, Ref 1, Will 5, CMB +4, Base Attack Bonus 0
(+1 Dex)
Abilities Str 18, Dex 13, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 17, Cha 6
Backstory:

  • Recruited in his youth by a cleric of Asmodeus rising in the ranks of the church of Mitra.
  • When he came of age, he joined the church, reporting to his mentor.
  • His mentor arranged for a clerical position under Cardinal Joffey.
  • Sartur became a trusted assistant, the cardinal's personal secretary.
  • His mentor sent word that the cardinal was getting too close to uncovering their sect and needed to be dealt with.
  • Sartur tried to kill Cardinal Joffey and nearly succeeded.
  • Sartur was arrested and held for questioning until Joffey recovered and confirmed Sartur's guilt.
  • Sartur was sentenced to death by hanging at Branderscar Prison
  • Role:
Sartur is about three things: Scaring people, controlling people, and taking down the church of Mitra from the inside. Mechanically this means demoralizing in combat between swings of his mace and focusing his talents on enchantment and illusion spells.

Out of combat, he has great social skills thanks to the Conversion Inquisition.

    Spell Annoyance:
I am really happy with the direction of this character, but I cannot figure out why they did not give the Inquisitor the charm/dominate spells. I realize it is mostly arcane casters that get them, and the one divine caster (Shaman) is a hybrid with an arcane caster, but still, those would be perfect for an inquisitor to have up his sleeves. OK rant over

Got a pretty good idea of the kind of character I want for this, but let's see how I do!

    Focus: 18
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
    Foible: 8

Not bad, that's a point buy of 29.

So just realized that I have a 24 point buy. Ouch. Will do a tweak to make it 25.

All right, so using the rolls from above plus the ability to move them around, I'm thinking of a vivisectionist alchemist (possibly beastmorph as well). I'm imagining him with something of an amoral researcher/mad scientist vibe. If those archetypes aren't okay, I can slightly modify things while keeping the class and overall feel.

Seems like a good chunk of people have already expressed interest, but I've been looking for a campaign thats not already started and seems interesting, which this one is. New to PbP but not Pathfinder (though my DM's have been weird). I can play every day including weekends, probably multiple posts per day if reasonable, unless my arm falls off or something, in which case I'll let you know after the bleeding stops.

My character concept is a lawful evil Elven Witch who worships Asmodeus, shadow patron, whole nine yards. Probably have her arrested for Heresy; seems fitting. Putting the 18 in intelligence and 8 in charisma, and I get...

    Strength: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
    Dexterity: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
    Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
    Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Which is... wow, better than I expected. I'll have a character sheet and backstory in a jiffy, though I understand if the people who posted ahead of me will have some priority. Probably aiming for a somewhat simple narrative- a girl who was born into a typical but well off family, who's arcane abilities and their origin drove them to a darker path. Heck, she was probably turned in by her parents- interesting hook for maybe some revenge narrative, if there's ever a lull in the main story (of course, thats all up to you). Let me know if you have any concerns or anything, and hopefully I'll have something more substantial by tomorrow.

Thanks for joining us in pbp. You have plenty of time to finish your submission as I said above, recruitment ends next Friday night. Since you are new to pbp, what that usually means for a recruitment thread is that the GM is holding an open recruitment for anyone to submit a complete application, then at the end, they'll select a number of them based on their criteria to participate in the game. So I'm excited to see what you come up with.

Now, just so others can see what we've got going on so far:

    Completed Submissions

    Elbowtotheface--Cathirix--Human Slayer

    In Process

    Mystic Ankh--Monk?
    GM Aest--???
    Yanjieming--???
    Dakcenturi--Human Witch (Synergist)
    Lekkric18--spellcaster
    Jagael--Sartur Holt--Dwarf Inquisitor
    BastianQuinn--Wocket Daergle--Gnome Sorcerer
RobL8675309--??? And now I will have that song stuck in my head all day.
    Redac--Alchemist (Vivisectionist/Bestmorph)
    Darkwing_DM--???
    Grumbaki--Kasit--Strix Kineticist (Elemental Annihilator)
    SodiumTelluride--???
    ChloePech--Elven Witch

    For now
    Strength: 18
    Dexterity: 8
    Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
    Intelligence: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
    Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
    Charisma: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Think my submission can be put in the complete pile.

But...any chance that we could use the feat tax rules?

You are missing something very important, please review OP for completeness.

Feat Tax, I'm not familiar with those rules. Let me take a look and I'll get back to you.

    Strength: 8
    Dexterity: 18
    Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

    Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
    Charisma: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Huh. Exactly 25. Would've been nice if Con and Int were reversed, though.

Will go for ar unchained rogue, possibly sniper.

    Alignment and background skills?

Alignment is lawful evil. Deity will (eventually) be Asmodeus.

    Actually, a question, @Taliesin.

What's your interpretation of Hellcat Stealth feat? Does it allow making a stealth check even in bright light with no concealment, albeit at a harsh penalty, or only in bright light with no concealment?

I would like to dot here, I have applied to another Way of Wicked game as well.

though that one was a replacement in an existing game, I will submit here as well since this one is starting from the beginning.

so lets see what the stats give:

    Focus- 18
    Foible- 8
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

ok 20 point buy guess will adjust to 25

    so the end result:
    18, 14, 13, 12, 10. 8

will go for one of two choices, changeling antipaladin of Asmodeous, or fire gnome summoner

any chance I can use LE alignment for antipaladin instead of CE?

Would you be opposed to a player who has gotten through Book 1 and most of Book 2?

    While we're all asking questions;

    1) Would you allow for a reskinned Aasimar, as Elf instead of human descended? It doesn't change any stats or skills, she'd just be more elf-like.

    2) For a deaf cursed Oracle, would you be fine with a rank in linguistics to read lips?

While being observed, only normal or bright light can help you use stealth. It's intent is pretty clear when reading the description.

As stated above, yes, LE antipaladin are acceptable.

This is no problem as long as you can keep Player knowledge and character knowledge separate.

    1) that's fine. If it doesn't change any stats and it doesn't recreate something that already has stats, then I have no problem with reskinning.

    2) Yeah, that's fine by me.

@All I've looked over feat tax rules and I really like what I've seen, so yes. We will use feat tax rules

Cool. I had a character written up that I've been wanting to play for this campaign for sometime. Thinking either a Human Cleric of Asmodeus using the WotW archetype for Unholy Barrister, or an Elven Necromancer.

So let's check the stats first, see if they make my mind up for me.

    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
    1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Edit: Oh, those are pretty good... so no, it didn't help make up my mind. Got a little thinking to do. Thinking an Elven Ranger actually.

    Strength: 14
    Dexterity: 20 (Focus)
    Constitution: 14
    Intelligence: 17
    Wisdom: 14
    Charisma: 8 (Foible)

Just a quick question, I am a bit new to these forums but interested in this campaign and willing to do a submission. How do you guys use those rolls for the stats? Is there a text command for it?
