|With Great Power|
+============+

The world is your oyster. Years as a Pathfinder Society agent have taken you across all of Golarion and beyond, and you’ve had more adventures than you can properly remember. Retired now, your power, wealth and skill have grown to the point that you count the rulers of Avistan and the leaders of the most powerful organizations in the Inner Sea as your peers and advisees. You have the kind of success and legend that most mortals can only dream of. You make your home in Absalom, the City at Center of the World, and you are at the center of the City. Children read of your past deeds in the Pathfinder Chronicles and dream of growing up to be like you.

Despite this, the Inner Sea is but a tiny pond on a speck of rock floating in the infinite vastness of the Great Beyond. Even at the heights of mortal power, there are still forces at work in the world which make you tremble at night and lie awake when you want only sleep. Recently you have been troubled by the disappearance of a man you know. The powerful sorcerer Brythen Blood has disappeared without explanation. Blood is High Curator of the College of Mysteries and a Grand Councilman, as well as being a retired Second Spell Lord. He is a powerful figure in Absalom, and his sudden absence has caused whispered rumors to fly among the elite of the city. Whatever your connection with Blood is, you won’t be able to sleep until you can figure out what happened to him and put your worries to rest.

=======================================================================

Hello, welcome to the recruitment thread for With Great Power, a short campaign I’ve devised for execution on Roll20 and the Paizo messageboards. This campaign will consist of the Paizo published modules The Moonscar, followed by The Witchwar Legacy. It will be run in PBP format, with Roll20 used for maps and occasional chatting. For me, this is an attempt to get high level Pathfinder play to work. I’ve attempted it in the past, but without much success. I’ve recently had several other games come to an end, and I have others that will be ending soon. So I’ve decided to give high level play another try.

I’m looking for 4 players with PBP experience and solid posting records (a few hundred posts in at least one game). Also, just for full disclosure, I’m likely to favor applications from players I’ve played with in the past successfully. That’s not to say I won’t take anyone I’ve never played with before, it’s just previously reliable/good players get bonus points.

I’ve been playing and DMing PBPs on these boards for a little more than two years now. If you want to check out my other stuff, just look at my profile. Yes, I’ve had a lot of failed games, but I’ve also had some good ones that are still going or have ended successfully. It’s up to you whether you like what you see enough to invest the time in an application. I usually end games when the players are posting too slowly, or on a few occasions when my RL obligations have increased unexpectedly. Even in those cases, I usually cut the least active games. My current RL situation is stable, and I don’t anticipate it changing soon.

So if you’re still interested after reading all of that, continue on....

Character Creation:

Level: 16
Ability Scores: 17 point buy
Races: Only core and featured are allowed. Don’t bother asking about anything else (including templates).
Alignment: Any, but people willing to help the common good are required. Whether their motivation is the goodness of their heart, a bag of gold, or sadistic pleasure in murdering monsters I don’t really care. PCs must work well with others. CE/CN are the least likely to be selected.
Classes: All Paizo published including archetypes. No master summoners, or synthesists. The wisdom bonus to AC from monk and sacred fist don’t stack in this game. Same goes for anything else the adds the same ability score bonus to the same attribute twice.
Traits: One of your choice + one campaign trait. See campaign trait spoiler below. You may take a drawback for a third trait.
Wealth:You start with 315,000 GP. If you want to craft, sure, but you only get 170,000 GP (if you take any Item Creation feat you start with 170,000 GP). You can purchase downtime businesses/teams/organizations for fluff purposes, but they will not be playing a major role in the campaign.

Campaign Traits:

These traits are meant to represent your involvement with Brythen Blood. They specify some aspect of your character background.

Proud Parent

You are the proud parent of a student at the College of Mysteries. Your child has the great honor of being taught by Brythen Blood himself, due to your own august standing. Without Blood around your child’s prospects for education are decidedly worse.

Benefit: Your motivation for the good of your child lends you a grim resolve the see the quest through. You get a +1 trait bonus on all will saves and the Endurance feat.

Alumni

You graduated from the College of Mysteries in your youth before joining the Pathfinder Society. Brythen Blood was something of a mentor to you, and you have kept in contact over the years.

Benefit: Your training at the College of Mysteries gives you a +1 trait bonus on caster level checks to overcome spell resistance OR a +1 to your caster level on spells from one school or magic. You must choose one benefit when picking this trait, it cannot be changed later.

Bastard

You are a bastard child of Brythen Blood. You didn’t know he was your father while growing up, but he made sure your mother had enough money to provide for you. When you retired from the Pathfinder Society he revealed his identity as your father to you.

Benefit: You received a good education or vocational training. Pick any two wisdom or intelligence based skills, you get a +1 trait bonus on those skills and they are always considered class skills.

Bodyguard

You work as Brythen Blood’s bodyguard. How this came about is up to you, but he pays you well, and it’s usually soft work - good for your retirement. Now that he’s gone missing you’ve been fired. If you can find Blood you get your cushy job back.

Benefit:When an ally is within your reach, you gain an extra attack of opportunity per round for each ally. You also get a +2 bonus to perception checks to avoid being surprised.

Private Muscle

You work as a private investigator, mercenary or some other form of hirable agent. The College of Mysteries hired you to locate and retrieve their missing High Curator.

Benefit:Once per day you may add 1d6 to the result of any 1d20 roll you make, you must declare you are using this ability before you roll the d20.

Your Character: My only requirements for your character's background is that they spent years as a Pathfinder Society agent before retiring, and that they have one of the relationships with Brythen Blood specified by a campaign trait. Other than that, they should have an amount of history appropriate for a 16th level character.

To make a submission please work out their stats and use the following statblock format. You can copy+paste it into your profile and fill it out (though I would recommend a word processor to avoid losing your work). Characters won’t be considered until their stats, description and character background are finished and in an alias on the Paizo site.

Deadline: In order to give me some more prep time and to give people time to notice this and make quality characters, I will be allowing a full month for recruitment. Recruitment will close Wednesday November 19th, 2014. If you have any questions, please ask. I will be monitoring the thread closely. Thank you for your consideration.

Can I take the snare setter rogue kobold archetype with a different race?

Nohwear wrote:

Yes.

If I do not get into War of the Burning Sky, I will adapt him.

I would definitely love to be a part of this adventure. I've been itching to play Moonscar for a long time now, and your games are always top notch, Jelani. Now to think over the many options for characters...

Dotting for interest.

DM Jelani, what are your posting habits? Is posting at least once a day okay for you, or we'll have to go slower?

I'm bouncing between 2-3 character concepts, but I'll probably end up submitting an higher level (and more famous :P) version of this gobbo: I've come to love the little bugger. :D

I typically post many times per day, that does not necessarily mean I'll update all my games every day though. I've tried enforcing draconian posting rates in the past and it doesn't work, so I'm just going to try to pick a strong group of players and see what happens.

I can not reply when at work, but I would love a game with a frequint post rate. I work part time. I work Mon, Tue, and Fri. I get off in the afternoon.

Silver Crusade

Since we are former Pathfinders, can we buy items that only appear in PFS chronicles, such as Acrimony Veil from In Wrath's Shadow (Scenario 4-02)?

Acrimony Veil:
Acrimony Veil
Aura moderate evocation; CL 9th
Slot head; Weight 1 lb.; Price 13,500 gp
DESCRIPTION
Acrimony veils are rare ancient magic devices created by Alaznist, the Runelord of Wrath. They are normally composed of several types of interconnected metal and human bones, each etched with complex designs. The device covers the wearer’s entire face (forehead, cheeks, and jaw), but provides no benefit to AC. This mask functions as a lesser empower metamagic rod, but only affecting spells of the evocation school. Additionally, the wearer of an acrimony veil may cast rage on himself once per day.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, Empower Spell, rage; Cost 6,750 gp

That particular item is fine. I'd have to allow them on a one by one basis.

Hi Jelani

Wizards & Alchemists automatically receive Scribe Scroll & Brew Potion respectively, so automatically fall into your reduced starting wealth category. Would you consider allowing those two feats to not affect starting wealth?

Also Arcane Bond allows Item Crafting on the Bonded item, would that affect starting wealth?

cheers

Hmmm. I suppose I shall say that Item Creation feats for consumable items (scrolls, wands, potions) don't count for reducing wealth. Also neither do things like Arcane Bond which affect one item.

How much Numeria stuff will you allow? I am thinking either taking it tom the hilt by centering my char around the tech or just having a Pilo and a bunch of useless trinkets.

Thinking about monk, most likely Martial Artist, not sure though Have been looking into the Flowing monk as of late.

bodyguard trait looks good.

I will have something up shortly

I'm leaning toward an arcane caster of some sort.

Jelani, what are your thoughts on the heritages for Tieflings and Aasimars?

Ryuu Akechi- have about 4k left to spend, back ground is not here, but will post soon, just wanted to get my hat into the ring.

Space 5 ft., Reach 5 ft.

--------------------
SPECIAL ABILITIES
--------------------

Stunning Fist (Ex)

At 1st level, the monk gains Stunning Fist as a bonus feat, even if he does not meet the prerequisites. The monk may attempt a stunning attack a number of times per day equal to his monk level, plus one more time per day for every four levels he has in classes other than monk.

At 4th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the monk gains the ability to apply a new condition to the target of his Stunning Fist. This condition replaces stunning the target for 1 round, and a successful saving throw still negates the effect.

At 4th level, he can choose to make the target fatigued.

At 8th level, he can make the target sickened for 1 minute.

At 12th level, he can make the target staggered for 1d6+1 rounds.

At 16th level, he can permanently blind or deafen the target.

At 20th level, he can paralyze the target for 1d6+1 rounds.

The monk must choose which condition will apply before the attack roll is made. These effects do not stack with themselves (a creature sickened by Stunning Fist cannot become nauseated if hit by Stunning Fist again), but additional hits do increase the duration.
Evasion (Ex)

At 2nd level or higher, a monk can avoid damage from many area-effect attacks. If a monk makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if a monk is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless monk does not gain the benefit of evasion.

Fast Movement (Ex)
At 3rd level, a monk gains an enhancement bonus to his land speed, as shown on Table: monk. A monk in armor or carrying a medium or heavy load loses this extra speed.

Maneuver Training (Ex)
At 3rd level, a monk uses his monk level in place of his base attack bonus when calculating his Combat Maneuver Bonus. Base attack bonuses granted from other classes are unaffected and are added normally.

Pain Points (Ex)
At 3rd level, a martial artist’s advanced knowledge of humanoid anatomy grants a +1 bonus on critical hit confirmation rolls and increases the DC of his Stunning Fist and quivering palm by 1.
This ability replaces still mind.

Martial Arts Master (Ex)
At 4th level, a martial artist may use his monk level to qualify for feats with a fighter level prerequisite when those feats are applied to unarmed strikes or weapons with the monk special quality.
This ability replaces slow fall.

Exploit Weakness (Ex)
At 4th level, as a swift action, a martial artist can observe a creature or object to find its weak point by making a Wisdom check and adding his monk level against a DC of 10 + the object’s hardness or the target’s CR. If the check succeeds, the martial artist gains a +2 bonus on attack rolls until the end of his turn, and any attacks he makes until the end of his turn ignore the creature or object’s DR or hardness. A martial artist may instead use this ability as a swift action to analyze the movements and expressions of one creature within 30 feet, granting a bonus on Sense Motive checks and Reflex saves and a dodge bonus to AC against that opponent equal to 1/2 his monk level until the start of his next turn.
This ability replaces ki pool.

Extreme Endurance (Ex)
At 5th level, a martial artist gains immunity to fatigue. At 10th level, he also gains immunity to exhaustion. At 15th level, he gains immunity to stunning. At 20th level, he gains immunity to death effects and energy drain.
This ability replaces purity of body, diamond body, and perfect self.

Physical Resistance (Ex)
At 7th level, if a martial artist suffers any effect that causes ability damage, ability drain, or temporary ability score penalties, the effect is reduced by 1 point. This reduction increases by 1 for every three levels beyond 7th (to a maximum reduction of 5 at 19th level).
This ability replaces wholeness of body, timeless body, and tongue of sun and moon.
Bonus Feat
At 12th level, a martial artist gains a monk bonus feat.
This ability replaces abundant step.

Defensive Roll (Ex)
At 13th level, a martial artist may use the defensive roll advanced rogue talent once per day, plus once per three levels beyond 13th (to a maximum of 3 times a day at 19th level).
This ability replaces diamond soul.

Quivering Palm
A martial artist may use this ability one additional time per day per level above 15th, but may not have more than one in effect at a time.

Greater Defensive Roll (Ex)
At 19th level, a martial artist suffers no damage on a successful defensive roll, and only half damage if the Reflex saving throw fails.
This ability replaces empty body.

I am looking at either a hunter or techslinger depending on how my question is answered.

This is the guy I have in mind. Barebones at the moment but will start fleshing him out. Will convert him to the stated format once he is done.

Having a bit of trouble choosing a campaign trait. x)

Btw how is HP handled? Also how are cohorts handled? Are they allowed?

Hi Jelani,

I'm interested...

Hey Jelani, it's Devram Coates/Janos. I'll submit Jaeger from a previous Moonscar game that sort of imploded/finished. I can back him down to 17 point buy, but he should be at the right wealth and level.

I have a little experience with Moonscar, but I'm more excited about the Witchwar Legacy.

edit: the DC for stunning fist should be 29, 31 in mantis style.

Looks like a good start. Don't forget you'll need to put it in an alias. I'd also prefer you fill out the advancement spoiler a little differently, so I can see easily what you took at each level. Here's one of my characters as an example.

Cuetzpalli

I put the spoiler at the bottom for him, above the background, but you should get the idea.

No leadership feat, please. HP is max at first level and then half HD+1+con modifier after that, like in PFS. Companions (animals, eidolons) don't get max at first HD, they get half+1+con every HD.

You'll need to modify his background to match the specifications as well. Let me know when he's finished and I'll give him a look.

Can do. Want me to list links to all feats as well or lesser used ones?

Also just realized my CMB is off. Haha. Should be +25,

I assume we won't be using mythcic at all correct?

No mythic, no. You don't have to include links to all the feats, but major bonus points for doing so. Especially with less common ones. If it saves me time, it will make me happy.

Question: I will be going Dawnflower Dervish bard into the Sentinel PrC. But it grants Leadership later on: do I gain something in place of it, like an extra combat bonus feat or something like that?
EDIT:Will there be undead? Sarenrae has a couple of useful and flavorful feats against them.
*Contains the urge to make a joke about moonwalking zombies*

What about the Pilo? And by useless trinkets I mean stuff that no longer works.

I don't know what a pilo is, but if it's from the Technology Guide, there's a 99% of the answer being no.

There may be undead. If I pick your character, we will see about replacing Leadership with something appropriate after selection.

A pilo is an alien animal from iron gods one.

Nope. Normal animals please.

Do you have a problem with non functioning tech as trophies? I still really like the idea of a career in Numeria.

Also
I'm the GM doing the 20th level Gestalt 10th level Mythic + Amys game on here. so very much interested and seeing how this works out.
:)

That is fine. I just don't want to introduce functioning tech items or alien creatures as this is somewhat of an exercise in sticking to "coreish" PF and seeing how it works at high levels. I've allowed everything in my past high level games and they were too much. It's totally cool if you adventured in Numeria and have some broken robot parts or whatever for flavor.

I feel like it's an attempt to make your stunning fist unbeatable. But I will allow it.

Could the "proud parent" trait be re-skinned with a non blood related youth, such as a protegè or ward?

Unbeatable? Nah. Just lil harder to beat.

How do you feel about custom items? For example a ring of knightly force, acts as a ring of protection and force shield. Rule wise it's legal but thought I'd make sure. ;)

I don't see why not. As long as it's someone your character cares about helping deeply enough to get involved.

I will not allow made up items. However, items which are made according to RAW that combine two other magic items are okay. You need to clearly break down and notate the item's pricing though, so I can audit it quickly and easily.

Coming along well, changing to fit you PC template.
She a LG healer/Cleric/ age 156 now not 56 she was to young for her race and she has kids. Just changing a few small things in Items and with the PC rules.

I plan to submit a N Warpriest (Sacred Fist) of Gozreh.

Jelani, what are your thoughts about starting at middle age or older? (With or without the Aasimar alternate SLA that grants lesser age resistance?)

It's fine to be old, but I don't want to use the age modifiers to ability scores.
