Valegrim, Gentlemen, thank you, but on further reflection I had better not try to play. I heard there might be an opening, checked out the game thread and jumped in with moe enthusiasm than judgement. More realistically, I fear time constraints might mean I would not do justice to the game. With your kind permission I will continue to lurk on the game thread.
Apologies and best of luck with this game.

Caran Lith Draug |

My apologies to all... I am sorry that I haven't written much the last few days, I'm at the tail end of negotiations right now. It's stressful, and Tuesday may be an extremely long day for me (they warned us that the last day sometimes goes past midnight). We hope to finish by Tues since the contract ends on the 30th. I will try to write in detail from my character on the PbP tomorrow after I get home from negotiations (it may take me a while to write)... If I do not write tomorrow, I will write on Wednesday.

Caran Lith Draug |

Thanks Val. I appreciate everyone's patience with me. :-) Unfortunately negotiations are not finished... so far they have not gone very well and on Monday 6-30-08 we will have a Federal Mediator assist between us (the union for the employees) and the company. The next couple of days I should be able to post responses easily, but Monday and probably Tuesday I will probably have my head spinning again... if all goes well, that should be the end of it... (for the next 3 years) otherwise I'll let you guys know. Again, thank you all for your patience! This game is fun, and I'd like to help in keeping it going.

Erkholt Grugn |

Wow, I hadn't actually dropped into this part of the thread for ages and there was heaps I hadn't read. I've been busy on the game thread and with a few other avatars I now have running. I'll never object to a new player btw. It's completely up to you as DM in my opinion.
On that note...
I'm travelling to see the inlaws for a few days (about five). I have access to a computer up there but I can't guarantee my posts will be as regular sorry. Will still try.
Cheers
PS. Feel free to play my character as best suits the flow of the game if I can't get a chance to post in any period that requires it.
Some dice rolls for you Val
(16),(10),(9),(4), (6), (3)
<groans> some horrible rolls in there. And me climing an icy tunnel and all.
My shield is slung and my armour is masterwork so the skill check penalty is only 5. Strength is +2, so my climb check is at -3 for this.

Valegrim |

Thronhen will probably also help; in the beginning the Vikings will push and get you started; so it is a tuff climb but you will do ok; thanks for the rolls in advance; will save them; in this situation you can take 10's and 20's if you go slow and extra time and work together; all beneficial.
Just waiting for Rama to ascend the tunnel also; then I am thinking tomorrow Baelinor will tell you the whole situation and a few adventure ideas; we will introduce your sorcerer to the game and the party and then we can get the two groups together.

Valegrim |

Woot; Eileen; your hot; your turn to post for your character :) woot.
Harold and would introduce you by name and title; but I dont remember them; so if you wanna do the little ball of fluff roll out; look all dreamy at you; say your name all excited like; and roll back all wobbly and shy; that is cool.

Lshay Le Fey |

Sorry, I thought I emailed you the character. Maybe I didn't? I can fill out the profile either way.
There wasn't any mention of seeing invisible objects/creatures in the Half-Fey template so I assume not, it just mentioned low light vision along with these Half-fey abilities...
HD
1-2.........Charm Person at will, hypnotism 1/day, faerie fire or glitterdust 1/day
3-4.........Detect law 3/day, sleep or enthrall 1/day
5-6.........Protection from law 3/day, Tasha's hideous laughter r suggestion 1/day
I assume I have the abilities listed under HD 1-2 and 3-4 but not 5-6 correct? We never finished up some last minute questions or details. Of the abilities listed above apparently I get everything except when it says "or" then I choose. If you understand it the same way then I will take....
HD
1-2..........Charm Person at will, hypnotism 1/day and then between faerie fire and glitterdust I would rather have Glitterdust.
3-4..........Detect law 3/day, between sleep or enthrall 1/day, I would rather have sleep.
Is this allright?

Valegrim |

Yep; looks good.

not yet; I would like to be able to click on your avatar and see your character sheet; you can spoiler hide private things like items not seen and the like.
oh; and about that wand that you just recieved from Baelinor; well, it is not a regular type of wand; meaning; whenever you use it; roll a d6 and tell me the number.

I posted in the PbP last sunday, but can't really post again until I have some responses... to my dice rolls, to how Eruanna is reacting, and Gaius Nepos's thoughts. I'm posting here in case my PbP post might have been missed, otherwise, I hope that the guy/gal playing Gaius Nepos is ok.

Valegrim |

hmm ok; will read back in case I missed something and update your guys posts.

ok combat fluidity.
it would be preferable to not have combats lag waiting for an individual; how long would you guys like to have to post for a combat round? it doesnt matter to me so much, I want you guys to be comfortable. I think a week is to long; I am thinking a few days or so but I have some ideas.
at the beginning of a combat; everyone could state their general goals; ie; my character is going to defend the priest and follow where he goes; then whenever you want to do something else; just say so. but as we dont really have a good way to plot out where everyone stands; we will have to have some general caviats; usually in table games; everyone brings a miniture and they are the only ones that move them so they are where they put themselves.
In pbp; I could get all of your emails and maybe email you a drawing of the area; that might work; or you could just use description and just tell me; saying something like; i am gaurding the priest and when he asks I will lay hands on him unless I am getting beat up and need it myself; or I am standing behind the priest and his guard and shooting anyone not in melee; that type stuff; also; it might be nice to have like ten d20 rolls just to have to apply when a roll is needed to keep things flowing; something like:
my melee to hit is X and my damage is X; here are 10 rolls; then as long as your character sheets are up do date; I could just do something like; player x hits the y for z damage and resists a spell A from bad guy B but doesnt spot player W slip or Mob L sneak up on Player P. Which could all happen on one segment of an initiative is things go simultaneously.
any thoughts?

Valegrim |

hmm did this character get done; seems I missed a response; you still on for playing?

I liked this idea. Basically it provides a backup plan for those unable to post within a few days. On weekends I work 3 days which makes it difficult to post until the stretch is over. So for me, 4 days would be a good wait. We could maybe give you die rolls in advance as well which you could use to "fill in the moments" when folks can't post in time. You would have to make individual adjustments from the character sheets but this still might be better than nothing happening.
Also, I can't find any stats on cloth armor so I'm wondering about AC, armor check penalty, and whether or not it would interfere with spells.

Erkholt Grugn |

Padded cloth armour is AC 1 and no check penalty L'Shay.
Val, your idea sounds pretty good. I'm less concerned about where we stand on a map for PbP. I generally think of battles as fairly fluid and reactive anyway. Although the rules are set up for battlemap encounters, they work just as easily for descriptive fights.
Given my work restraints at the moment I'm gonna go with the general plan for combat and post something specific as needed. I can really only post once per day for a thread (I'm in Australia and I miss your peak posting time by about 8 hours I think).
I'm gDMin an email game at moment and we play a round out in about 2 days assuming everyone posts at least once per day. That allows for me to collate what's happening and then respond with a summary for everyone while calling for next actions. I'm happy to wait as long as you're comfortable with as I check the threads everynight. I just don't always get time to post lengthy responses.
Cheers

Valegrim |

Well; there really is no such thing as cloth armor; but yes; padded armor is all cloth; your so called armor is just fairie cloth that is both tuffer and magically more resilant yet still soft and comfortable.; as it is not really armor in the classic sense; it doesnt have any restrictions; you can pretty much just treat the armor you wear as natural armor in most cases; except for things like it can be destroyed; can be taken off; stuff like that. You could also think of it as normal clothes with an untyped magical armor enhancement that things like shield spell or mage armor spell can combine bonus with.
there is silk armor in the game; but not here; which is a cloth armor which roughly has the same armor value of studded leather; but a higher bonus against piercing attacks.
Erkholt Grugn wrote:Padded cloth armour is AC 1 and no check penalty L'Shay. Are Padded armor and cloth armor the same thing?

Valegrim |

ok; when I am running my game around the table; I give some background skill points as a bonus depending on the area that you grew up in and skill to represent the appreticeship or skill you may have learned growing up; things like art; music; history; games; farming; like that; they should not be combat oriented; and only such skills as to round out or flesh out your character; things like cooking, farming; mining; horse breeding and the like.
each character can take 10 pts of skills and buy such things; max 2 ranks; put these as freebies and flesh out your characters; present each of the lists here and I will tell you if anything is not approved; remember; none of these should be combat oriented; these are to represent stuff you did as a kid and early teen before you started anything like being in a militia or your training for your class.
so; like Thoronhen could take wine brewing; or grape culitvation or profession teamster; any dwarf can take mining; elfs can take music; like that.
put questions here if you have any. In some areas of my world; humans have particular cultural skills; as we dont have any currently in the campaign; I will let those be known as they come up.
we are still accepting new players; one or two would be nice.

Erkholt Grugn |

Handle Animal 2 - Looking after Errol the mule
Mining 2 - I'm a Dwarf. We live in mines :)
Profession (Blacksmith) 2 - Simple stuff, not armour crafting or weaponsmithing. Just manufacturing simple tools, horseshoes and such.
Perform (Fables and Chants) 2 - Cleric of Moradin so hopefully I can do some of these. I actually already tried in game when we were walking to the village and I got the sailors to sing along with me. Also the flashback story I did is kind of a fable.
Knowledge (Dwarven Traditions) 2- Cleric of Moradin again
Also, I'll talk to a mate of mine and see if he's keen to join up. Will let you know.
Otherwise, I'd recommend advertising with a new thread in gamer connection, looking for two and link it to this one and the game thread.

Valegrim |

cool; these are all exceptable skills; good deal; oh; we had one in gamer connection; maybe it fell off the bottome; will check. Cool check with you bud; we have a warrior type waiting to join at the end of this scene FYI.

ThoronHen |

So Val I was wondering what info I would know in character as being part of an information network and in my travels about the recent drow tragedies. Well, what they would call tragedies any ways. Just want to know so that I have a genuine reaction with the up coming encounter.

Valegrim |

ok; bit of clarification; then Thoronhens question.
the skills are just ranks; dont worry about in class or out of class; its just 10 ranks of skills for these things growing up; if you want to improve them afterwards; then buy additional ranks normally; but these are just ranks to flesh out your past.
ok; Thoronhen; you have the gather information skill; roll it if you want more than cursury info.
anyone can attempt a religion roll about this matter as well; DC is pretty hard though as this race's activities are not well known.

gather info 26=18+8 not a bad roll ;-)

Vale, I really hate to do this to you, as you were the first one to give me a shot at PbP. I'm gonna pull out I'm afraid.
I'm really busy with work at the moment and unfortunately I'm rapidly losing interest in play by posts. I'm finding it difficult to stay creative over this length of time as my work sucks alot out of me in that regard (teacher). I'm actually going to pull out of all my pbp games and take a break from the boards for a while.
I would love to have gotten involved in your long term real life game. Your world is amazingly fleshed out and fully realised. The most organic setting I think I've ever played in. I just can't keep doing it via this medium. I very much enjoyed your DMing style so please don't feel its that issue (I know you were concerned early on about this).
Erkholt is yours to do with as you please.
My appologoes to the entire group for this, its extremely unfair on all of you but I really feel I need to do this.
Good luck in the future with all you do.
Cheers

Fritholf |

I really enjoyed playing with him (Erkholt)... but I understand. I'm not sure what we should do Val... with Chris (CAT = Thoronhen) and I losing our jobs here in about 5 weeks with the call center being closed down I don't know if we'll find something quickly enough and we will likely be without internet for a while. Plus, his dad is in the hospital with cancer right now, we're packing to move... we haven't been able to post as often as we'd like either (partly with the site coming up as blocked at work half the time depending on which server we end up on when we log in). I do know Chris (Goethar) has been talking of joining the PbP game... but it's mostly up to you.

Namaste |

Wow, that sucks big time, Fritholf. We've not met yet, but I wish you guys the best of luck, especially for the dad in the hospital.
Valegrim, here is the character we've been discussing over in Rumblefish's thread. Look her over and let me know what you think. I'm open to any suggestions for alterations, embellishments, streamlining, etc.

Valegrim |

well, I am not in any hurry; I know you guys (caran and thoron) are in a special situation, but hightly motiviated. Chris has his guy pretty much all ready to go and is waiting close by. Would be really nice to have five or six players; not sure why we lost the players we have and that is a bit of a concern; I read back through the story and it seems pleanty interactive; hmm, LaFey's player is back posting on other boards but hasnt said peep about the pbp.
I am of a opinion to continue but with smaller themes in this area until you get the strength to take on the main story theme. This place has loads of issues hehe; lots to do here :)

Valegrim |

ok; this character looks good we just need to insert this into my world.
ok; the region you are from on the map is 6,4; 6,2 which in terms you can understand is a vast mountain chain, roof of the world type stuff - think himilayas - that in our terms has these general cultures around. to the west is mainland china; to the east and south is India; to the east and north are the vast desert steppes of mongolia; to the north are the glades of the wood elves. There is an ocean to the south and to the west. I will give you game term names for these places a bit later. Katanas and there use only come from one place; The Isles of Blest; not that far away in relative terms as those isles are to the west.
as to why you cannot get home; well; about a year ago something happened; everyone you have talked to in the region near your homeland ie; mystics or learned people of china; india, or mongolia; all report the same thing (in many places these people mix freely) they all say the elves did it. Your homeland is in part of the mountains were basically you are all alone; but not far from the elves; the closest neighbors to you are the Harachi, think half giant, mountain clans constantly at war yet very very spiritual. Anyway; everyone says the elves did something to close their borders. They cast some great spell; and entire region was mystically shrouded, and worse; nobody has seen an elf for over a year; they just all got up and left on the same day.
Wow, that sucks big time, Fritholf. We've not met yet, but I wish you guys the best of luck, especially for the dad in the hospital.

ok; bit more; so you and your troop wandered a bit and found out that the whole continent is in chaos; a horde of demons are in the north with a vast number of vile creatures and have control of most of the northern part of the continent; in response; the mongolians devil worshipers have been calling upon their lords and now a vast number of devils are in the steps marching that way; a end of the world battle is sure to happen when demon princes and devil lords wage war with mortal pawns.
In mainland china; the emperor is missing and the balance of the court is out of harmony; the celestial emperor has sent the furies to punish mortals until harmony is restored; ie more demons but of oriental flavor. India is fairly ok; lot of civil unrest; lot of fear, it seems like a powder keg that could go up at any moment into intercene warfare.
A lot of people of all races are fleeing south; to the promised land of the Southern continent with its fast open fields; untaped rich resources and lots of elbow room where anyone can just leave all the politics and strife behind and join the adventure of taming a new land.
I am thinking you, not being interested in any of the wars that are ravaging your continent at the moment and not being able to find your way home; have taken one of these ships to the new land.
