If we find nothing, I would imagine we continue on down the trail.
Male Halfling Bard 4
The group comes to sudden drop down into a crater. It must be 20 feet to the bottom and at least 100 feet across, if not more.
The sides of the crater show intense heat. The soil and rock have a glassy look and the sides of the trees facing the hole are blackened.
Ghadmyr
>>>>MAP SO FAR<<<<
7 is the stirge colony, 8 is the crater.
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr looks at the crater with interest. "There is something down in the bottom that is catching the light. I think this site is certainly of interest if anything supernatural is going on here."
He examines the sides of the crater. Does it seem too hot to traverse, or would we be able to safely climb down?
It's not hot now, no. It seems safe to traverse. Climbing down (should you wish to do so) will involve ropes, however. Going round it will involve making a trail through the woods.
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Seen summat, Ghadmyr?"
Healaugh uncoils his rope in anticipation and looks cautiously at Ddraig and Macmorr.
"'m strong for size like, but doubt can haul either of tha up if tha falls."
Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4
"Thank you for your concern, friend Healaugh. Friend Macmorr and I will have to take care in our endeavours, lest we cause great difficulties for all."
Time for a flying dismount, then!!!
Male Elf Druid 4
So what kind of checks are we making to get down there?
Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4
Ghadmyr of the Fallen Leaf wrote: So what kind of checks are we making to get down there? Well, my luck playing large dragonborn paladins, it's a "falling flat on your face while descending a gentle slope" check!
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Ghadmyr and I can take a wee look, like. Happen we'll spot summat and both soft on feet."
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr ties a rope to a nearby tree trunk (or outcrop, or other sturdy anchor) and begins to climb down slowly into the crater.
Athletics 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3. Let me know if any other checks are needed.
Edit: Hmm. that looks bad.
Climb checks are Atheletics checks indeed. You'll need to use ropes to descend, and tell me if you're all going down at once, separately etc.
Male Halfling Bard 4
Athletics (1d20+7=9)
Like Ghadmyr before him, Healaugh makes a bit of a hash of going down the rope.
I'm guessing one at a time.

aaaaaAAAAGGHHHHH!
Another Dragonborn Special!
Male Halfling Bard 4
Ah well. We were due a change of luck. Ghadmyr's somewhat awesome nature skills have got us past a whole lot of perils.
"Reckon a bit of a sing-song'd cheer us up?"

I can picture all of us lying crumpled in the bottom of the crater, having a sing-a-long. (All of us except Macmorr, that is, who manages to descend gracefully.)
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Anything can happen in the woods ...
Any moment we could be crushed."
M Human Barbarian 4
"Hey, thanks, I feel a whole lot better now."
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Just thinking of bigger picture Macmorr. Crater like this could be hazardous like."
D'you know, isn't it? I rolled for Ynyr and he succeeded! Ynyr and Macmoor descend safely. Ghadmyr, Healaugh and Ddraig please make a DC 20 Athletics check to catch hold of something to stop you falling.
The slick surface of the glassy cliffs proves too much for some of the party...
Male Halfling Bard 4
1d20 ⇒ 11 Save v falling horribly into a crater.
The famed luck of the halfling's deserts Healaugh on his way down. With his eyes tight shut, he can only hope it isn't Ddraig behind him.
Oops. Re-read the post. That should be +7, giving him an 18 unless our DM would prefer a complete re-roll.
Male Elf Druid 4
DC 20, eh?
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Ghadmyr goes tumbling into the crater.
Ghadmyr - please take 8 damage.
Healaugh make an Acrobatics check (DC 15); if you pass - take 5 damage; if you fail - take 11 damage.
Male Halfling Bard 4
Additional elf damage?
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 5hp damage
"Get foot out of face, Ghadmyr, if tha dostna mind."
Ghadmyr and Healaugh lie in a heap, embarrassed.
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr manages to extract himself from the halfling, gets to his feet, and dusts himself off.
"That was certainly the fastest way down," he says dryly.
He looks around at the interior of the crater.
Anything interesting? Perception 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
Ghadmyr immediately spies the source of the glinting, some shards of glass that would be very valuable to a jeweller or suchlike.
You found 100gp worth of glass.
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr picks up the glass and shows it to the group.
"I'm not sure this was worth almost breaking my neck over."
Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4
Athletics check: 1d20+2 = 13+2 = 15
Arse.
"Friend Healaugh, why is the ground advancing towards us so fast?"
Male Halfling Bard 4
Healaugh scrambles out of the way as Ddraig advances at speed.
"Reet, Ghadmyr. Owt else down here?"
He looks speculatively at the crater and hopes to goodness there is.
"Reckon I were reet about us being crushed."
M Human Barbarian 4
"Well, a real bunch of woodsmen, aren't we?" Macmorr looks at Ghadmyr. "And you really have no excuse."
Male Elf Druid 4
Macmorr wrote: "Well, a real bunch of woodsmen, aren't we?" Macmorr looks at Ghadmyr. "And you really have no excuse." Ghadmyr looks at Macmorr blankly. "I can identify 78 varieties of fern and I can explain to you the mating cycle of a red fox. But why, pray tell, would you expect me to know how to climb a rope?" Then Ghadmyr cracks a faint grin.
M Human Barbarian 4
"What, you've never climbed a tree?" Macmorr sticks out a hand and helps the others up. "Anything special about this glass? And what are lumps of glass doing in the middle of a forest anyway?"
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Looks at them, likely. Not same as climbing."
Healaugh sighs. "More of a sailor mesen. Craters is different."
Male Elf Druid 4
Indeed. I would like to know a little bit more about this crater. What is it doing here?
Nature 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19
Arcana 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Male Halfling Bard 4
Good thinking, Batman.
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30 - Arcana
Gah. It's true it would be nice to know, but I just know that's a roll he's going to need when something other than Ddraig lands on our heads and tries to eat us.
Ddraig takes 12 damage.
Healaugh believes the crater may have been caused by a tremendous magical experiment, one producing so much heat that it caused the very earth to fuse into glass.
He finds some glittering dust in various heaps. He recognises it as what the sages call residuum.
200 gp of residuum has been found.
Male Halfling Bard 4
Has he any idea how recent this explosion might have been?
Male Elf Druid 4
I am going to add the 100gp chunk of glass to my profile as group treasure, so at the end we can split up what's there.

Also FYI to all, I'm going away this weekend. I might be able to stop in and update my PbP's, but if I don't seem to be getting to it, feel free to post for me.
What now, folks?
Helaugh cannot ascertain how long ago the experiment took place.
Male Halfling Bard 4
Healaugh looks meditatively upwards.
"If'n we've seen all there is to see, best be getting up and out. Not seeing boar tracks, so don't reckon piggy-wig landed here."
Resignedly, he contemplates climbing back up out of the crater.
Anyone wishing to climb out must make a DC 15 climb check twice.
Male Halfling Bard 4
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 111d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Healaugh feels his feet slip from under him and he collapses at Macmorr's feet.
Horribly bruised no doubt.
"Tain't natural." He scowls up at the deceptive walls of the crater.
Male Elf Druid 4
Is there a portion of the crater that looks rougher or lower that may be an easier climb?
M Human Barbarian 4
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
After his sarcastic comments, Macmorr makes quite a hash of getting out of the crater.
I'm assuming I have to miss by 5 to actually fall, but even so...
Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4
Frankly, with Ddraig's record of athletics checks, I may just wait for a rope!
Nevertheless, I'll give it a whirl:
Two athletics checks: (1d20+2=21, 1d20+2=11)
Someone tell me what that means ...
Am I halfway up the slope?
