The White Boar of Kilfay - 4E D&D
Game Master

Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr crouches to the ground to see if there are any tracks or other signs of the boar, as well as any clues as to other kinds of creatures who have been through here.
Perception 1d20+13=19.
Male Halfling Bard 4
Healaugh rolled a 4 on his nature check. 13 total. Oh goodie. And a 3 on his perception check giving him 12. He's better off looking passively around (PP 19).
The halfling keeps his eyes and ears open, scanning the trees around him.
Ghadmyr finds no clear signs of the boar.
The trail runs to the north (past the hangman tree) or to the south.
Male Elf Druid 4
"I don't see any tracks. All things being equal, I think we should search the path without the hangman tree first," Ghadmyr says without cracking a smile.
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Talking sense there, Ghadmyr lad."
Healaugh shoulders his hurdy-gurdy, hefts his javelin and heads south.
I take it the group is following its Yorkshire, er I mean, halfing, bard?
Male Elf Druid 4
M Human Barbarian 4
By 'eck, lad, and no mistake!
The group press on down the southern trail, the wood growing darker. The adventurers come to a grove; the trees here are tangled and moss-covered. The path is strewn with a drift of old dry leaves, apparently immune to natural decomposition in the damp atmosphere.
M Human Barbarian 4
Perception = 13 + 7 = 20.
Macmorr looks around the clearing, trying to conceal his nagging superstitious dread.
Actively looking through the leaf litter, Macmoor spies a patch of glittering black moss. It would have been easy to miss otherwise.
Arcana or Nature check.
M Human Barbarian 4
Nature = 18 + 2 = 20 (lucky roll!).
Macmoor has heard of this weird plant; it's obliviax, also known as memory moss. It steals memories, specifically spells from the memory of the caster without the victim realising. It's probably a good idea for the arcanists in the party to keep their distance...
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Seen owt?"
Healaugh senses that something has attracted Macmorr's attention.
M Human Barbarian 4
"Yeah - see that black moss - it'll steal your memories. Bad news for magic guys, so steer clear."
Male Elf Druid 4
"There are some foul plants growing in this wood." Ghadmyr looks about to try to discern which way to proceed.
What trails continue from here?
The trail continues to the south for 50 feet or so before turning east.
Male Halfling Bard 4
Nodding at Macmorr and scowling at the potentially memory threatening plant in a way which assures it that he will not be forgetting what it looks like, Healaugh plods inexorably onwards.
The little bard is mistaken. Mosses are plants. ;D
Male Halfling Bard 4
Fabes DM wrote: The little bard is mistaken. Mosses are plants. ;D And has corrected himself :) Can't be doing with making mistakes like that.
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr proceeds to the south as well.
The group continues to the south, and the trail then heads east for perhaps 300 feet or so before turning off again to the north.
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr continues searching for any signs of the boar.
Perception 1d20+13=26
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Reet twisty. Seemingly we're going back same way now."
MAP SO FAR
4 is the Hangman Tree; 5 is the Memory Moss
Ghadmyr reckons the boar probably kept off the trail so far.
Male Elf Druid 4
"I think we should continue along this trail for a while longer. As it is, this wood seems a bit dangerous to be wandering off into the trees."
Male Halfling Bard 4
Nature on possible boar tracks (1d20+9=26)
"Likely tha's in right, Ghadmyr, but no harm taking wee look. Gurt beast like that can't just vanish."
Staying on the trail, but looking for specific tracks of any kind. (Boar would be most helpful, obviously).
Male Elf Druid 4
Are we continuing on the trail, then?
Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4
Well, unless anyone's got a chainsaw to clear some of the forest, then it's onwards down the trail!
M Human Barbarian 4
Male Halfling Bard 4
Yes, until we spot something that looks like big pig tracks.
Male Elf Druid 4
We continue on the trail, delving deeper into the wood.
The trail swings east as you head north along a lengthy avenue of tall black trees. You can see that the trees on each side of the route are occupied. For a distance of perhaps 50' or more, batlike creatures hang head down from the branches.
Ghadmyr notes that the creatures have long snouts.
Nature checks, if you like. :D
Male Halfling Bard 4
Nature check on long snouty things (1d20+9=22)
"Not so sure as I recollect seeing owt like them before ..."
Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4
Bat-like creatures, with long snouts ... for burrowing deep into flesh?
I don't like it, I tells ya! Did anyone bring a flamethrower?
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr looks about warily. Surely this many fell creatures in a wood is peculiar.
Nature check 24.
Oh Ddraig... They just want a hug.
Male Elf Druid 4
His voice barely rising above a whisper, Ghadmyr tells everyone, "Those things are stirges. They're nocturnal creatures, so as long as we pass quietly, they shouldn't stir from their sleep. We'll want to stay clear of this area come nightfall, though."
Stealth roll 1d20+5=20. I don't know if we are all particularly stealthy, though, so hopefully these things are sound sleepers.
Male Halfling Bard 4
Home rolled. Stealth - 1d20+7=20
Heeding Ghadmyr's words, Healaugh eases his way uneasily past the dangling stirges.

We're boned!!! Oh well, time to try and be quiet!
Stealth Roll: 1d20+0 (!) = 17 ... Yay!!!

Stealth Roll: 1d20+0 (!) = 17 ... Yay!!! I have a cleric in another pbp who had to roll a stealth check recently - and had a -2 modifier.
Could we have Stealth checks from Ynyr and Macmoor too, please?
The group try to keep quiet passing the flock of stirges...

Celestial Healer wrote: I have a cleric in another pbp who had to roll a stealth check recently - and had a -2 modifier. I've only just got rid of my -1 because I'm at Level 4!!!
Please, Mr Fabes DM, Sir - was that enough?
Male Halfling Bard 4
"Tha's gained deft footwork there, Ddraig lad," whispers Healaugh admiringly.
You will find out, young dragonborn.
M Human Barbarian 4
I rolled for Ynyr - he got 8... but I was reading a messageboard post where it was suggested to take the average of all the party's Stealth rolls when making checks like this. So, I've tried that and you get an average of 18. The stirges have Passive Perception of 11. You're through!
The group creep past as best they can, with Ynyr stumbling over some branches, but they manage to do so without waking up the huge number of stirges roosting in the dark trees.
50 XP each for circumnavigating the stirges.
Male Elf Druid 4
Ghadmyr continues to stay close to the ground, searching for tracks and signs of the boar.
Perception check 1d20+13=28
Here, white boar! Here, white boar! We have kibbles!
Male Halfling Bard 4
Kibbles? And there was poor old Healaugh innocently thinking it was acorns and truffles. He'll bow to Ghadmyr's far greater knowledge of the natural world :D
