Game Master lynora

This is a high level rules light game set in a school for magical kids, kinda a mash-up of Soul Eater, Harry Potter, and X-Men. :)

It's like a reflex.

Ephebe sighs as she heads back to her room. So much to do, so little time. Just like always. There was something she just didn't trust about that Alton kid, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Still, she might be just being paranoid. After all the other shocks she'd had today, it was no wonder she was seeing enemies everywhere.

She came in to find Nasima meditating. She tapped her on the shoulder.

"Sima? Hey, there, remember me? Your roommate? Long time, no see." :)

Come now, no point in crying. You'll get torn apart by those who do know how to fight.

Why do some people not trust me? I'm only part of a plan to destroy the world! Sheesh, get over it already.

Oh, is that all? Well....at least it isn't the multiverse. I've got enough of those wackos to deal with already. Nice to see someone starting small for a change. ;P

If you take a look at something big, you'll see it is actually a bunch of small things put together. Oh, and you'll get a chance to stop us, if you can catch us as we travel around the Empire and cause trouble for the big scalies there.

And it's going to need to be unhackable shielding. I can't do it with the level of technology I currently have...so I was wondering if you could do it? And do you think it would be practical or remotely safe?"

Solivala makes it a point of looking at Jim. Keeping silent.

He is thinking will I have to destroy him. He knows to much. Ah paranoia, tis a rude word for survival instinct and wisdom. XD

Anyways, Jim was found in one of his old labs. He's fine. Self-aware and everything. My guess is a living soul bound to a machine body. Probably something he came up with while trying to solve the problem with the suits."

"So, what happened? You lose a bet? Or did nobody see fit to tell you that I'm a social pariah at this school? Look, if I go to the concert with you it's going to be a major hit to your social standing around here. So now you can't say you weren't warned. If you want to rescind the invitation now, no hard feelings." Her tone is tough, but she looks tired.

"No, nothing like that, at all. Honesty usually being the best policy, I'll give you a bit of full disclosure: I asked Ephebe Sunwake and Krays Blackscale if they knew of a beautiful, charming woman I could ask, and your name was the first mentioned, although it was probably because of the 'charming' bit, you being a thrallherd and all. I know all of that, and I simply do not care. You may be a pariah here, but social standings can be decieving, and unltimately they do not matter. Not to me. I see the truth of things." He'll take her hand.

"You are beautiful, and I would like you to accompany me to the concert.
At the very least, you may have fun, but it'll get you out amongst others, which I'm sure you miss. You and me both will get dirty looks, but to hell with them. Let's go enjoy ourselves inspite of everyone. You do not deserve to be shut away, that beauty going unnoticed. If you want to use a spell, or something to tell I'm on the up and up, I won't be offended. I can not be controlled, so I'm not worried.
Go out with me, and be free."

He doesn't use any of his champion powers, as he is being 100% genuine.

After firing off a quick zone oftruth spell to verify that he was telling the truth she looked confused.

"I don't understand," she thought to herself. "He knows about me and he's still being nice to me? Of his own free will with no magic involved? And this was suggested by those two? Ephebe hates me...well, I gave her lots of reasons...maybe his sarcasm meter is broken? Or there's something horribly wrong with him....well....he seems okay, but it's hard to be sure. The real monsters always show a pleasant face on the outside. I know that all too well. Oh, screw it. It's just a concert."

"I don't know about all that being free stuff. Don't you think you're being a bit dramatic? But fine, since you know what you're getting into, I'll go to the concert with you."

"Oh, Yeah, I forgot. You weren't here for that..."

"Ummm....so you saw Krays? Er...did he tell you, well, no you're still asking so...ummm....where to start. Well, I guess with the obvious."

"So after the field trip to that island...you remember, the one with the hot springs and all the crazy monsters? Anyways....my brother Taron decided to organize a little trip of his own...which turned into a disaster. The kind of disaster that ended with me bringing out latent abilities I'd been holding at bay til then and having to come out with the truth. About the whole being uploaded to a different body every time I died while fighting the time demon. Still me, but me from another reality. And this particular me was raised by the time demon and has a lot of genetic modifications.....So that was, yeah. I can't remember if you were there for that part or not. Honestly I'm a little fuzzy on the details. Things happened so fast. I remember that the day after that I was supposed to meet Krays after class because we were going to go to the graveyard so he could talk to Death. He needed some answers to well, lots of questions. Except that when he went to get his stuff he found a note from Spin saying that he was withdrawing from school and to tell me he was sorry. Well, it could have been worse. Kronos did some interfering so included with the other modifications was the long-lost ability (at least for my kind) to un-imprint. But it's not a fun process, and the stress on my body was so much...well, the modification the demon made weren't done very well so I was pretty much coming completely unraveled. I almost died. But then Solivala and my mom were able to use the nanites to save me and restabilize my DNA...and as a fun side-effect I'm self-healing now since I'm basically being held together with positive energy," she said, just a shade too cheerfully.

"No. I'm not going to cry over him anymore. He wasn't really ready for any kind of committment and I ...well, I was still lying to everyone about myself and what I really am...not really a good foundation for a relationship. So it's probably for the best."

She continues, talking very fast, desperate to change the subject as quickly as possible.

"To throw a few more curve balls in the mix...it was Lysander who kept me stable long enough for Mom and Soli to save me. Actually he's been giving me some training too. Well, who else could I ask, right? All the other Hunters I know are trying to kill me. They don't have a lot of interest in helping me learn to control Hunter abilities even if they had the right type. And even if we're not the best of friends or anything, family has to stick together, right? So yeah...he's actually one of the good guys."

"And Krays is really a dragon. Ummm...there's a lot more to that story, but I figured I'd get all the shocking stuff out of the way at once and then we can move on from there."

"I would suggest a living container. Akin to my clockwork gate, the fusion of magic, machine, and life is extremely complex and powerful to the point of being unknown as such it is highly durable and reactive. This would allow the safe guard and regulation to be completely independent and so would not be susceptible to hacking as you put it. Any form of attack or control would have to be direct and adaptable, in such an event I would be aware of it. Would this be acceptable?"

I guess I'm asking is should we also include some sort of secondary containment field?"

"I think you misunderstand. It will be self aware, its ability to think will be no different then your own. As such it would be able to defend itself, retreat, even use the power source as a weapon against any threat. While it is connected to me it will still have the ability to function alone, it could even go off to find help if needed. If you wish you could place counter measures such as traps leading to its area but any sort of containment field would be as much a prison for it then a defense. Personally I would not wish to impede its ability to move about. I would place it in a large level with sensors for detection purposes. This would allow you to track it as well as detect any intruders who in turn would need to find the container before attempting anything. But that is simply my suggestion."

"Uh, well, I guess I should explain about Champions first. Well, you know about the gods of course, probably better than anyone, considering. Well, before they were, there were the ummm.....we call them patrons because that's the kind of relationship that we have with them, but well they're Concepts. proto-gods. Time, Death, Love, Creation, Darkness...and a few more too. Anyways, the balance of power between them ended up being shifted because of the gods mostly although mortals helped too. So they made this system to help regulate things. Each patron appoints a long-lived mortal as their Champion. The Champion has the responsibility of working to keep things in balance. And we get special powers and such to help with that. So I'm the Champion of Time, Amada is the Champion of Love, Asch is the Champion of Darkness, and Krays is the Champion of Death. He's...well, Death kinda broke the rules a little. He was Death's Champion and he was a black dragon and he was as he puts it kinda a jerk. And then he got himself killed in the line of duty. So Death had him reincarnated as a kobold, to teach him humility. So yeah, he's always been a dragon, but only since he was reappointed as Champion of Death has he been able to remember his past and change into his old form."

"Actually, that's why we missed the demon attack or whatever it was that happened. Krays was molting so he couldn't change back to kobold form, so I took him over to the jungle for a bit which was quite fun up until the assassination attempts started. Anyways, he's back to normal now, but since he changed size as a dragon, I guess that made him get taller as a kobold too."

"Well, ummm," she started looking a bit bashful, as usual reluctant to talk about herself. "I lost some of my spells and I can only cast through my Caster now, but I get special powers mostly involving time manipulation so that makes up for it. Like super speed, and being able to make someone age rapidly, or jump back in time a few seconds to redo an action that didn't go well. And, uh, well, I can make weapons out of white fire. Here, I'll show you."

Her eyes turned purple-black as she formed her flame chakram. "I can make other kinds of weapons too, but this is the one that works best for me. Lysander showed me that the flame can be shaped in other ways too," she added, the chakram blurring into a blob of flame before becoming a blobby something that might have been supposed to be teddy bear. "But as you can see, I'm not very good at that yet."

"But what about you? What have you been doing all this time?" she asked, dismissing the flame, her eyes quickly returning to normal. "I bet you've learned lots of new things too."

"They do not require anything. But it has been my experience that self aware creations tend to need something to pass the time. They also enjoy regular maintenance. Being forgotten or ill treated would be something to avoid on your part. This seems to be a common problem for others, for some reason it never happens to me."

Nasima's eyes get big and she applauds as Phebe makes things -- actual, like, things out of thin air and fire. "Phebes that's awesome! That's so cool! I can't wait to see what else you do with that. I don't...completely understand the spellcasting stuff, I gotta admit, but it sounds like you're okay with it and still basically can do your thing, and that's what's important to me."

Her hair makes an oddly dubious waving motion when Ephebe asks 'Sima about what she's learned. "Well, heh. Really mostly I've just learned more meditation. Very intense, deep, core skills and focus. Sifu Daiyu is the best, even if she is totally completely psycho hardcore about things." She rolls her eyes in mock exasperation. "I can't do anything cool like that, I can just, well, and this is kinda a drag maybe, I can just kinda do what dad sent me here to learn. I can do some Khoda things, and...and I can summon him. Here. Through me. He has to do what I want, but...I can feel him pulling away. When he's here. I can't do it very much or for very long, and then I'm blind and cold and nauseous and basically TOTALLY feel like I'm dying afterwards. So it's not fun. I called him earlier today to destroy some devil thing or something that was wrecking the gym and scaring people. I'm...not sure if anyone got hurt?"

She pauses and fiddles with the ties on her pants. Her hair is lazily looping around in the air like the world's slowest helicopter blades. "Oh! This...is a little bit like what you can do, but again it's not really creating. Khoda can't...he doesn't create, he only destroys. Super lame." The sylph takes a deep breath and closes her eyes, and when she opens them they are once again balls of blank, blue-white lightning. She presses her palms together and when she opens them, a massive bolt of pure electricity is arcing and bucking and spitting between her hands. It kicks and roars and twists like a thing alive, like a caged beast trying to escape captivity which, for all intents and purposes, it is. Little flyaway bolts shoot out from the trunk of lightning and crush things; a lamp, a chunk of the floor, a textbook. 'Sima doesn't seem to notice. Her upper lip is beginning to curl up into that same hateful sneer from earlier. She is chuckling a low, slow, throaty, demented laugh.

"Ah-heh-heh-hehhhh" It is a frightening copy of Khoda's laugh. It would be funny coming out of such a slim and pretty young sylph, if it weren't for the giant lightning bolt in her hands that was currently frying parts of the room at random. She curls her right hand around the bolt and rears that arm back, releasing it from her left palm and wielding it like some weird sword. With a growl she leaps up and thrusts her hand forward, landing in a wuxia attack stance.

"KIYAH!" The lightning bolt focuses into a cylinder and shoots out at the door, hammering through the doorknob and blasting out into the hallway where it fries the doorknob on the room across the way and then takes a giant chunk out of the wall in that room. There is a perfect hole where both doorknobs used to be, and the doorknobs are simply gone, melted to vapor.

Nasima's eyes revert to normal and she is smiling and blushing. Her hair comes down and covers her face in embarrassment. "Heh. Oops! Sorry. It was all I could think of; the door. See, once I make lightning, I have to use it. I can't…I dunno, send it back or anything. Khoda doesn't do things by half, I've found out. Jeez. Who can we get to fix this? I just don't think sometimes. Ugh!"

The stone set in the center of Nasima's forehead is pulsing gently, and glowing the color of arterial blood.

Ephebe jumps up, already loading bullets into her Caster.

"Don't worry, I got this."

She headed across the hall first. Thank goodness whoever's room this was was out at the moment. She fired a bullet at the wall and it went back to the way it was. Then she stepped back out of the room anf fired at the spot where the doorknob had been. Once the doorknob was back she closed the door then headed back to her and Nasima's room, firing at the doorknob, the lamp, the floor, and the unfortunate textbook, sitting down once everything was back to normal.

"Gotta love make whole. Looks like I'll need to make more of those bullets from now on," she said with a wink. :)

"It's okay if you can't help[ destroying things now and then because you have a friend who's really good at fixing things, okay? So you don't have to feel bad about your powers, whatever they do."

"What else wold we have to provide for self-aware systems like that? I mean, they would at least have each other for company, since we'd need more than one. I think three should do it. But will they require anything else? We can reconfigure this sub basement into any shape we need, so that won't be a problem."

Solivala takes a moment.

"They do not require anything. But it has been my experience that self aware creations tend to need something to pass the time. They also enjoy regular maintenance. Being forgotten or ill treated would be something to avoid on your part. This seems to be a common problem for others, for some reason it never happens to me."

No comments on that last statement. ;)

"Mmmm," she said, choosing to ignore the last part. "Well, the thing is, providing maintenance wouldn't be a problem for the next few years, but the future is hard to predict. Since these things would have a virtually endless lifespan, we need to plan for eventualties that include there not being anyone around to care for them. That means they either need to be able to do self-maintenance, or we should also build maintenace bots that can take care of that for them. And I'm not sure what a self-aware containment field would find amusing as a way to pass the time. Are we gonna teach them chess or something?" she asked doubtfully.

"Ah, who am I kidding? The chances of being expelled, and being in more trouble at home than I ever have before, are pretty good right now." Michael finally says. "That wouldn't be a bad thing if it wouldn't mean leaving you behind. But, as I seem to have been forgotten in the aftermath of today's invasion, I think I've got some time. The concert is tomorrow night, so we should probably get Saffire's costume together, right?"

"Whew. Thanks, 'Phebe. I won't do any more, er, 'demonstrations' if I can avoid it. Sooooo, anything happening this weekend? Anymore meetings with Death or the gods or anything? Or you gonna take it easy and just repel an army of attacking hottentots." 'Sima grins.

"Right,. I think I've got some stuff we can use over here," she said, jumping up and looking through one of her boxes. Still looking inside the box she speaks hesitantly.

"I-if you do get expelled...it's...well, there's not really anything tying me here, right? They wouldn't even notice if I disappeared....so....I could go with you...if you wanted...."

"Well, there's a big concert tomorrow night. I've really been looking forward to it. Except I kinda sorta volunteered to do a dance performance at the last minute. Oh gosh, I need to get to work on my costume right away...it's going to be tough to get it ready in time....and there isn't even time for rehearsal. I don't know what I was thinking."

"Kitty... I'd love that, but... but you shouldn't leave here because I... handled things poorly. Y-you should stay here, learn how to take care of animals Professor Ormarr while I start work on the pet shop." She can tell it's hurting him to say all this. "By the time you graduate I'd probably just be getting it opened."

"B-but you need to stay too so you can learn alchemy. It's not right! They shouldn't just kick you out. They let that student council president stay even after she took control of several other students, and the rumors say she tried to hurt one of them. If she gets to stay, you should too!"

"But i-if they don't...then I'll come and visit you on all my breaks, okay? And I'll write every day.." she had to stop talking because the tears were coming too fast.

"Oh great! I love concerts! And dancing!" Though she has no dancing skill per se, Nasima's natural grace as a child of both royalty and the sky make her at least pleasing to watch, even if her movements are pretty much just random. "I'd love to see you dance. I'm sure anyone would! Who needs rehearsal? You just move, right? C'mon c'mon we'll practice right now!" She jumps up and goes over to the little boombox on her desk, which is completely fried by lightning. "Ah-heh. Er, oops! Ephebe I don't suppose you can do the...gun thing...with the make whole, fixing stuff thing?"
