If optimizing characters was actually important, we'd all just play Pun-Pun or the Wish and the Word, or other ridiculous builds. I'm a fan of min/max theory - I love picking apart systems to find those things - but it's not really an important part of actually playing the game. At least, IMO.
Edit: In almost any fiction, characters are defined by their flaws and weaknesses far more than their strengths. That's not to say that strengths aren't important - they are. But... Well, take Lord of the Rings for example. The character of Frodo would be far less compelling if he just waltzed into Mordor and dropped the Ring in the Fire. It's his struggles - against the influence of the ring and the harshness of the wild - which makes him. It's his flaws that enable his story to have such power.
The same is true through all of fiction. We empathize with Captain Picard because we are given glimpses through the vaneer of the perfect captain into a flawed man.
The flaws make you Great. Being awesome at everything doesn't.

Interesting and fun characters are just that, interesting and fun. For whatever reasons you find them thus. If you enjoy building twinked to the max uber unstoppable badass godly killing machines, then that's fun for you.
If finding some cool abilities or class combos that really blend together nicely, and building a character offa that is fun for ya, then it just is so.
Two of my favorite characters of all time were a PC who started the game as an expert and became a Ranger at like actual level 1 in a RL game that sadly did not last more than a few sessions, and a level 1 Harrow centric PC who I first made for Carrion Crown and is now going to be eventually joining Avalon.
Just because you can't make optimized characters doesn't mean you suck at the game, or are "a loser". All of your main characters in Avalon are really interesting Magic, and seem to be fun to play/portray. Neither of the two above characters were even close to optimized, but they were flavorful as all get out, and that made them hella fun.

One of my favorite characters I made was for a Star Wars campaign. He was a five foot talking velociraptor and after almost every fight he was floating in a bacta tank. He was fun because he was almost useless, the only major accomplishments he ever did was; fight a Sith and win in melee combat, he was a ranged character, and fight and KILL a Yuu-Zhan Vong with a lightsaber, which he had no idea how to use, while blind because the Vong hawked a loogie in hjs eyes.

This is a quote from a blog by the author of Fallout Equestria, so take that as context, but it really touched me when I was reading it, so I thought I'd share given your somewhat melancholy mood Jess. I realize not all of you are bronies and that's the context that goes with this quote, so... :P
Earlier this week, someone asked me why virtue was important. The question was in the context of the Fallout: Equestria tabletop roleplaying game, whose character sheet has a prominent space for the character's virtue. Virtue, after all, grants no mechanical bonuses, so why define it? (I have heard the question asked several times before... and nearly always, it is by a player who does not wish to shackle their character by having a defined redeeming characteristic. *rolls eyes*)
Much the same, we remind ourselves that "virtue is its own reward" because the world does not hand out gifts for being a good person. People enjoy holding grudges; they have fun tearing things down. It's easier to be selfish and mean, more profitable to lie. Being good requires effort and often sacrifice... and usually the only reward is the reward of having been good. In Fallout: Equestria, virtue is what allows you to weather the spiritual erosion of the Wasteland. In Friendship is Magic, it is the fuel for the most powerful magics of salvation, defense and positive change. These things can be said of virtue in the real world as well. But ultimately, virtue is important because virtue is important.
Good people recognize the inherent value of virtue. For many bronies, the show's handling of virtue was a major draw and laid the foundation of our fandom for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. We should remind ourselves daily of the show's call to practice virtue, even if it is not pragmatic or easy or the fastest way to personal gain. Practice virtue because we want to be better people than the people we would be if we didn't.

Guys, in the words of Sam Jackson in Jurassic Park "Hold on to yo butts" I have a major confession that may shock/disturb you but... I am a brony, a total lover of all things MLP, I own a binder of MLP trading cards, three vinyl figurines, a deck of MLP playing cards, I have a main OC as well as other lessers. I went into the show expecting a cute pony show for girls, not DBZ style beam fights and some really witty one liners. The show grew on me like a fungus at first, then more of a symbiote. I am more into MLP than I ever thought I would be, Now that I'm talking about it, maybe I shouldn't be ashamed of enjoying MLP and buying the merch. In closing I have this to say: Derpy is best pony!

YES! This right here, this is what's important. MLP is silly and witty and creative and sometimes childish, and those things are so very important. I mean that completely seriously. Being silly matters, alot. NEVER be ashamed of what you like (with the caveat that the things you like cannot harm other people).
And yes, Derpy is best pony. She's silly and clumsy and wall-eyed and absolutely adorable. I have so much more I could say about Derpy and why she's special, but I'll probably end up ranting, so I won't.

Just waiting for Kevin and/or Jeran's responses if any.
Furthermore, I don't expect 'fast' responses from me, due to holidays-- and don't expect much from you all, given same, so... be prepared for some slowdown, potentially.
I will definitely check in once a day though.
Cheers.
ps: Bemused with the interaction, though.

Given that three of you guys there have NO indication of alignment (just Kevin's 'Nice'), per the game system -- my assumption was that none of you were Evil prior to that last post with Tryko'Sam and the angelic's comments about filth burning.
Please let me know if that's not the case for the Heaven scene. Things would have been dramatically different... or will shortly. :)
Additionally, Settro, you're listed as a Half-Fiend. So I was operating on that assumption as being valid as well.
Thanks.

I had a shuttle with Shepherd Book, River, and the alien girl from DearS, I think also Luna,
There was magic, used by invoking an sin gent language no one knows the origin of
When I woke up Book was talkin something about a theory about how the magical language did something with time travel to invent itself, and that true time travel magics were impossible but magic that undetected alters the time streem were possible.

Nice means true neutral, but still helpful.
I put that there before I knew what Kevin was like.
I'm never really sure what a character will be like before I've had them for a while. A lot of the time it had to do with what they're presented with.
Kevin right now is true neutral and leans towards good when someone needs help, but he's usually not one to jump at a rescue mission like this, if he hadn't been in the right place at the right time. (Because I wanted him to get involved. XD)

As I have mentioned before, he is extraplaular*, and has the evil subtype.
He has an overwhelming aura of evil.
He is not evil aligned, though.
He calls herself a demon lord, and it's half-true.
He also has a moderate aura of good.
I don't list his alignment becuase it's kinda a broken system, and he fluctuates to some degree when under stress.
*as he was indeed born in the abyss

M'kay.
I'll update something based on this information. Please note, as I've mentioned before, I don't retain all the information on your characters-- so listing some of these things on your profit/sheet, helps a ton.
The Evil subtype warrants an update though.
As for your opinion on broken system or not, sadly, it's how some encounters are built and-- well, when in Rome.

"A man is innocent until proven guilty"
The angels have no record of wrongdoing.
Just putting that out there.
If, for a story reason, you want something labeled "classified" just ask.

I did just ask, in the post above. The Evil subtype is enough though-- your alignment would only increase or delay the effect.
Thanks for clarifying.

On planes that are strongly aligned, a –2 circumstance penalty applies on all Intelligence-, Wisdom-, and Charisma-based checks made by all creatures not of the plane's alignment. The penalties for the moral and ethical components of the alignment trait stack.
A strongly neutral-aligned plane stands in opposition to all other moral and ethical principles: good, evil, law, and chaos. Such a plane may be more concerned with the balance of the alignments than with accommodating and accepting alternate points of view. In the same fashion as for other strongly aligned planes, strongly neutral-aligned planes apply a –2 circumstance penalty on Intelligence-, Wisdom-, or Charisma-based checks made by any creature that isn't neutral. The penalty is applied twice (once for law/chaos, and once for good/evil), so neutral good, neutral evil, lawful neutral, and chaotic neutral creatures take a –2 penalty and lawful good, chaotic good, chaotic evil, and lawful evil creatures take a –4 penalty.

Just evil spells.
How will you deal with it? That's your challenge. It should definitely be a 'surprise' if your character(s) have been to the Heaven Planes and never experienced this previously.
None the less, Settro's starting to cook. It will not be comfortable shortly-- it will be damaging.

Consider me confused though-- I feel I describe the scenes well enough, then posts like these throw me for a loop.

Haven't caught up on game thread yet. On the subject of alignment, I've stated many times that we play fast and loose with the alignment system in this game as it can definitely become a character growth straight jacket all too easily. So, most characters don't even have an assigned alignment in the first place. If I have to sum up the average for say Jeran for purposes of a detect spell I would probably say neutral good, but it's an approximation. The only time alignment does come into play really is for extra planar effects. So I'm guessing that means that Settro is having a rough day? Guess I'll know for sure in a couple of minutes once I read the game thread.
