Tetsu no Kurage no Haka - Tomb of the Iron Medusa in Minkai (Inactive)

Game Master Dreaming Warforged

The notorious Minkai aristocrats of Clan Hanado died out nearly two hundred years ago under the weight of its own arrogance. All that now remains of the once-great clan is the long-hidden Tomb of the Iron Medusa.

DW, just FYI,I'm working on a ratfolk wizard, and expect to have something for you later today. I'm thinking abjurer; with the absence of cloaks of resistance it suddenly makes some of the class features meaningful, and fits well with the backstory.

Looking forward to see the ratfolk!

Taizo should be complete now, skills, spellbooks, equipment, and typical spell selection done as well as description and personality. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Description:
A lean narrow faced man with a dark complection for a Tian Taizo is not handsome, indeed the unkind might claim he has a rodentine appearance - that is not helped by his constantly flitting gaze. He affects a neat goatee and dresses in light silken garments that give him plenty of freedom to move, favoring blues which are his family colors.

Personality:

Taizo is a dutiful and loyal man who genuinely cares for others and wishes to spare them pain. He is socially rather awkward, but his earnestness and willingness to go out of his way to help has earned him many loyal friends over the years. Despite being widely renowned for his heroism he still has something of an inferiority complex compared to his brothers who have all settled down and had children and seem to be living proper adult lives while he is messing about.

In love with the silver dragon Ayalerill he is uncertain whether such feelings are proper, and his now frequent visits to the dragon's lair - he teleports there - remain mostly platonic for the moment. Ayalerill thinks he is an idiot for dithering, but is enjoying the chase and making the strait laced young Tian uncomfortable.

Liberty's Edge

Very interested in playing a monk (zen archer). I love oriental inspired campaigns and have run a number of them myself (all the way back to 2nd Edition and Kara Tur). I will work up the crunch and fluff asap.

If it's a crawl... Ratfolk Rogue (Trapsmith) 12, with 2 levels in Ranger TWF.

A furry little explosion of death and determination that's come down from "the mountain" to restore the honor of his people. So long have they been marginalized.

Celestial Armor, Spectral Shroud and a +1 weapon.

@Dreaming Warforged. RAW rdgs Shroud states becomes incorporeal and cannot attack. Is that cannot attack at all, or just cannot attack physical enemies. Not sure it it's a nerf or oversight. Most importantly, you're interpretation please.

Good one Black Thom! I'd say "cannot attack corporeal". I'm open to discuss it if people think it then is too strong.

A question about other gear. Are we allowed other magic items outside of those listed (such as potions or minor magical items...not including those items you have already proscribed)?

You can buy magical items with the 5,000 GP. Just keep in mind they are very rare items.

DW, I borrowed generously from past Paizo APs, especially the Jade Regent one. If that did not occur in your world, let me know and I can modify it.

Kawa's background and history:
Kawa Shiro was the second son of a rich and powerful aristocratic family in Tian-Xia. Unfortunately, his family made enemies in the region and one night, when he was five years old, a band of assassins led by a Ja Noi oni demon (hobgoblin-look alike) and sent by one of his father's political rivals, massacred his family. Thankfully for him, the mayordomo of the home, a man named Toshi Kaijitsu, carried Kawa away to safety. Fearing reprisals, Toshi sent the boy away to stay with some long-distance family of his in Sandpoint, where he met Ameiko. They eventually became friends. Kawa grew up with fictional stories of his parents' fate, until he was told the truth at age 16. He then began planning his vengeance on the oni demon who killed his family. He started learning archery as he was naturally dexterous. He helped some locals deal with the local goblin problem but eventually left them to join the Black Arrows, a group of rangers. Kawa specialized in the killing of evil outsiders, though the Black Arrows also taught him about the dangers of the undead and giants. After a couple of years' experience with them, Kawa eventually left after killing the deformed ogre family who had decimated the rangers. Kawa roamed around offering his hunting and tracking services, seeking to kill evil outsiders, among them imps, demons, and devils.

When he turned 21 and feeling his skills had been honed to perfection, Kawa decided to return home to Minkai and seek his vengeance on the oni demon. Upon returning home, he learned that his friend Ameiko was in the line of succession to rule the Dragon Empire and that the Jade Regent and the Five Storms were about to take over Minkai. He joined the rebellion and war and as luck would have it, he confronted the oni demon who killed his family and inspired by his hatred, put 15 arrows into him in less than 30 seconds. He eventually helped overthrow the Jade Regent and in the process, found his most beloved weapon, the legendary bow, Angelwing. He now has pledged his life to the service of the empire and the region.

Personality: Despite his fame, Kawa remains a quiet fellow, with unassuming physical build or looks. However, hidden underneath lies a speed and dexterity never before seen in humans and a skill unparalleled in archery. Kawa is very passionate about destroying his favored enemies and feels the ends justify the means as long as good is achieved in the long run.

Lucendar:
I would prefer that the Jade Regent part either did not happen yet, or would be in the process of happening, though no one in Minkai would know. Furthermore, there is little chance Shiro would know of Ameiko's claim.

Here is the beginning crunch for my submission. I am working on the fluff right now, but thought I would post this first to see if I was on the right track, or if I needed to change anything (or submit a whole new character!) I was also thinking of a monk/ninja combo if this one does not seem to fit. Thanks. Daniel Stewart

Here is my Paladin, Akiyoshi.

I ended up making him an older man, mostly because I liked the profile picture and it sparked the idea of the old warrior coming out of retirement for one last adventure. I didn't pick any specific age or apply aging modifiers, as the age was just meant to be flavour, so let me know if you do prefer to use age as a mechanical factor.

Mechanically, he is a two handed weapon fighter with a Critical striking focus. As AC items are hard to come by, he focused more on Hipoints, aiming to be a good front line meatshield; particularly with judicious use of his swift healing via Lay on Hands. He still needs to select a couple odd feats and flush out equipment, but most of the crunch is there.

GM, how do you feel about Leadership? I like the potential idea of this old man having a young Paladin apprentice to aid him. I was thinking she'd be a Divine Hunter Paladin that would provide ranged backup for the team as well as extra healing resources. If you would rather avoid leadership, it is not a vital component of the character.

Here's Tihn Tremako, markofbane's ratfolk abjurer. I still need to finish his description, equipment and familiar stats. I'll wrap those up as soon as I can. He would make a good know-it-all for the group; he has at least +20 in all of the knowledge skills.

This is Lucendar and here is Kawa's amended history, DW. Crunch in profile.
Forgot description: He stand 5'6", with black hair and brown eyes and a Fu Manchu moustache.

Background and Personality:
Kawa Shiro was the second son of a rich and powerful aristocratic family in Tian-Xia. Unfortunately, his family made enemies in the region and one night, when he was five years old, a band of assassins led by a Ja Noi oni demon (hobgoblin-look alike) and sent by one of his father's political rivals, massacred his family. Thankfully for him, the mayordomo of the home, a man named Toshi Hirowata, carried Kawa away to safety. Fearing reprisals, Toshi sent the boy away to stay with some long-distance family of his in Sandpoint. Kawa grew up with fictional stories of his parents' fate, until he was told the truth at age 16. He then began planning his vengeance on the oni demon who killed his family and swore an oath that he would avenge them. He became one of the group's best trackers and archers. After a couple of years' experience with them, Kawa eventually left after he and a couple of survivors killed the deformed ogre family who had decimated the rangers. Kawa roamed around offering his hunting and tracking services in the region, seeking to kill evil outsiders, among them imps, demons, and devils.

When he turned 21 and feeling his skills had been honed to perfection, Kawa decided to return home to Minkai and seek his vengeance on the oni demon. Upon returning home, he learned of a plot by an Ogre mage named Akuma the Horned King to lead an army of oni demons and giants down upon the Dragon Empire. Enlisting the aid of some local adventurers, Kawa proceeded to join the band in raiding local outposts manned by the demons and the giants. After months of battles, as luck would have it, he confronted the oni demon who killed his family and inspired by his hatred, put 15 arrows into him in less than 30 seconds. Kawa wept that whole night, finally satisfied he had fulfilled his vow to his parents.
He continued his fight against the giants and Akuma. In the climactic fight, he faced a powerful erinyes (mortal hunter) named Helkaata summoned by the ogre mage. Almost losing his life, Kawa managed to defeat her and his band of heroes dispersed the giants and ended the alliance, though Akuma managed to escape. As a reward for his efforts, Kawa was handed Helkaata's legendary bow, Angelwing (beautiful composite longbow decorated with white feathers in the shape of a wing). He pledged to use the bow to rid the world of evil and in his service of the empire and the region, as they are his birth home.

Personality: Despite his fame, Kawa, now age 30, remains a quiet fellow, with unassuming physical build or looks. However, hidden underneath lies a speed and dexterity never before seen in humans and a skill unparalleled in archery. Kawa is very passionate about destroying his favored enemies and feels the ends justify the means as long as good is achieved in the long run. As he grew up outside of Minkai, he often feels like an outsider despite his name and ethnicity and retreats to his cabin in the mountains, where he lives as a trapper with his wife, Sakura.
3 events: death of his parents, avenging them, and finding Angelwing.

I would prefer no leadership feat. I'm not ready to deal with this yet. So if it's not vital as you say, I'm more comfortable without.

Aliases being worked on so far:

-Lucendar - Kawa Shiro – Human Ranger 14

Let me know if I forgot someone or misread something.

Deadline is Sunday, same time as opening post.

I was in the mix, but despite having a mental picture I don't have the impetus to put quill to parchment so I'll withdraw. Best of luck to all those in the mix and to the PbP in general.

Sorry to hear. Feel free to change your mind :)

Whether I make the cut or not, the party is going to need a rogue...it is a trapped dungeon after all!

Liberty's Edge

I was just thinking that myself and wondering if I should submit my ninja/monk character.

You can submit more than one application. Just let me know if you have a first choice. That might help.

Still, a rogue is the only one who can disable magical traps.

Perhaps a member of the local Yakuza?? Here is the finished version for Jiro. If changes are needed just mention them and I will get on it.
Thanks

Lucendar wrote:

When I was considering a character for this, the other idea I had was for a catfolk bard (archaeologist). They gain that ability at 6th level. Maybe if I have time before Sunday I'll see what I could put together. That's an archetype I've always wanted to try out. Of course, that would then leave us light in the arcanist applicants.

Liberty's Edge

If I remember correctly, anyone can detect a trap...the trapfinding only relates to disabling magical traps. You can always bypass them, of dispell magic if need be. I think I will write up a ninja character just for the heck of it....could be fun!

Playing around with HeroLab, I came up with a pretty cool half-orc rogue, who does tons of damage if he flanks and sneak attacks with a +33 to Disable Device for all traps. I'll wait till Saturday and if nobody submits a rogue, I'll submit him as a replacement for the ranger.

As long as you'll enjoy playing the character. We can always find solutions to all those pesky problems.

Lantern Lodge

I'm still planning on submitting an arcane trickster. I was leaning kitsune originally and then changed my mind to ratfolk. Now with all of the rats, I might switch back. He will be quite good at traps.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry bout the silence. I still intend to submit my catfolk rogue, the week has just been handing me no end of distractions, for better or worse.

Well with all these rogues and such coming out of the woodwork, I think I will stay with Jiro. Was all good with him?

Looks good.

Great...thanks. Now I just have to wait patiently until Sunday...

Recruitment ends in about 48 hours.

Just to confirm... 30 pt buy, then racial, then 7 Physical & 7 Mental?

Exactly.

I think the character concept is one of "refinement", in the sense of adapting and evolving to a specific purpose.

Fighter/Rogue/Ninja (Brawler/Trapsmith/Ninja, 3/4/7).

Almost everyone seems Human, does the DM have a preference regarding the race put forth? Race isn't critical to the character concept. Originally thinking Ratfolk.

I think Ratfolk would make him have something to prove. A chip.

I was happy to have a campaign with unusual races allowed. That being said, I'm happy with players choosing the race they wish to play. So I don't mind many humans. I'll look more to concept and background.

Alright, I've got my Samurai finished, please feel free to have a look through and ask me any questions.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry guys, life just isn't being kind, and the inspirational juices are just running low. Afraid I'm bowing out of this one. Good journeys to all.

24 hours before deadline.

Not finished... yet, but here's Black Thom's unstoppable ratfolk!

Does Rogue & Ninja Sneak Attack damage... stack? 2d6 Rogue + 4d6 Ninja = 6d6 Sneak Attack?

I'd think so, sneak attack from other sources stack.

Actually, ninja is an alternate class of rogue, so you cannot have levels in both ninja and rogue.

An alternate class operates exactly as a base class, save that a character who takes a level in an alternate class can never take a level in its associated class—a samurai cannot also be a cavalier, and vice versa.

See now that's an important piece of information... oversight!

Might work out even better... All Rogue, Ki Pool & Ninja Tricks.

Thanks, Lucendar!

You meant all ninja, right? Rogues don't get ki pools.

Lantern Lodge

@DW: How do you want to handle permanency?

Lucendar wrote:

Rogue talent for it.

Can we figure this out after the selection? I'm sure we'll find a good way.
