The door to the east is made of wood and open, the door to the west is made of stone and bears a life-sized bas-relief of a tall, horned and cloaked figure holding a maul in two hands.

Hadarai sees nothing else down each direction.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale backtracks and looks through the open wooden door to the east.

Akahale sees that the corridor continues for 5 feet before becoming a t-junction, this time running north-south.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale returns to the door adorned with the cloaked maul-bearer and examines it suspiciously.

What kind of check for identification, if any is possible?

Akahale has not encountered this image before; it bears no relation to depictions of any being, otherworldly or not, that he has seen. A reasonable inference could perhaps be made as to its identity, based on previous evidence and information.

M Dragonborn Warlord / LVL 8

Grafire will stay in the East/West corridor near the door back to the rest of the group.

Sorry guys, busy week. Might be hit or miss until Sunday.

Manny peers left. He peers right. He peers up his voluminous sleeve.

"Now, where DID I put those gummy bears?!?"

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

"I believe you used them to build a fort during our last rest, Mage Mandrake,"

Akahale's soothing tones belie his concern at the strange image on the door.

"It is my belief that this is a representation of the Sleeper discussed in the runes upstairs. Shall we proceed?"

As always when confronted with abomination, the dragonborn becomes as tunnel visioned as a toddler.

Female Eladrin Wizard 9

"Proceeding does seem like a prudent course." Shae offers.

I take that you are proceeding through the stone door.

Akahale can see that there is an ornate lock on the door, but no key is evident.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale attempts to open the door by turning the handle.

I'm assuming that Hadarai is still covering Akahale's back.

Twin jets of frost shoot forth from hidden nozzles! Akahale and Hadarai are doused in cold.

Attack vs Akahale and Hadarai respectively. On a hit, you are immobilised. On a miss take half damage and slowed.
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 121d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 143d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 2, 5) + 4 = 14

Everyone please roll initiative!
7 damage and slowed (se) to Akahale and Hadarai.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 - init. -2 if Grafire isn't within 10 squares.

"A trap! Excellent. We are following the correct path."

Even through icy lips, Akahale sounds triumphant.

Male Eladrin Paladin 10

Yes! I see the low dice rolls are finally helping me :) And yes, I would defnitely have been near enough to Akahale to keep hiim protected... even if it means sharing his fortune.
Init: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 (assuming Graf is w/n range)

"Ha! I'm glad you are exc-ci-cited over us being fr-frozen." Despite the latest events Hadarai does seem joyed at the prospect of another good fight.

Is this trap a repeatable attack or a one time shot? Do we see where it can be disabled, if it is?

Current State:

Slowed (se)
HP: 71/78 (temp: 0), Surges 11/12, AP 1/1
Enc. Used: -
Dailies Used: -

I'll let you know once we have everyone's init rolls.

Half-Elf Ardent 9

"Let's just shut up and figure out how to get pass this door."

Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Init: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Female Eladrin Wizard 9

"That looked cold..." Shae remarks.

Init: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

I'll roll for Grafire:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Initiative

Hadarai 24
Grafire 18
Otto 15
Akahale 13
Mandrake 13
Shaeryyn 11

Countermeasures
-After the trap is triggered, an adjacent character can
delay one frost jet for 1 round (treat the trap as stunned
until the start of its next turn) with a DC 22 Thievery
check.

-An adjacent character can disable one frost jet.
Complexity 1 (4 successes before 2 failures). DC 24
Thievery. Each attempt is a standard action.

The lock can also be picked as Thievery check (standard action).

Hadarai and Akahale are considered adjacent.

M Dragonborn Warlord / LVL 8

"I believe this task is best suited for Otto's nimble hands. With my clunky claws we will be through the door by the time the under world freezes over.[snickers] I will stand guard."

Grafire will hold his action until needed but has his Axe and shield at the ready.

Male Eladrin Paladin 10

Thievery is a bad choice for me... At best I can assist someone with the skill. I'll wait to see if Otto wants my help... if he needs/wants it, I'll assist (theivery: 1d20 +3).
Or could I maybe assist Akahale or myself with avoiding the jets/damage? Maybe an Endurance or Heal check to decrease the cold damage?... If none of those work, then maybe I'll just take the total defense action, try my save and just move out of the way.

Hadarai waits for his allies' thoughts.

Half-Elf Ardent 9

Uh, just checking, does anyone here actually have training in Thievery? I've got +8 thanks to Bard of All Trades, but that's still not great. EDIT: Yep, only one with training in Thievery

"Alright, everyone. Out of the way. Might be able to disable this stuff." Otto forces his way through and begins fiddling with the lock.

It would probably be faster to ignore the traps and just pick the lock. I just hope we're using the Heroic Tier DC and not the Paragon Tier DC. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale is a +6 and can try to aid.

"Perhaps it will be possible to disable it at a distance?" Akahale looks menacingly at the door trap and points his rod at it.

Can we blast it from a distance?

Female Eladrin Wizard 9

I have nothing that'll help, except Aid actions, also at +6.

Shae stays back, out of the way, resting on her disc and keeping watch for foes.

OK - here we go. Hadarai - please make a save. Otto -I can tell you now that even with aids, you're not going to pick the lock with that roll.

The group try to bypass the trap by pickign the lock but to no avail.

Initiative

Grafire 18 - DELAY

Akahale 13 - slowed (Se)
Mandrake 13
Shaeryyn 11
Hadarai 24 - Slowed -save needed
Otto 15

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Any word on brute force?

Akahale backs carefully (and very slowly) away from the door.

1d20 ⇒ 7 - save v slow.

Male Eladrin Paladin 10

If he's useless where he stands, Hadaria action was to take the total defense, back away, and save, to allow his allies better reach.

Save: 1d20 ⇒ 18

Any word on other possible skills to help the challenge?
And to piggy-back Akahale's question, maybe if we can't brute force the trap, we can brute force the door down?

No go on Endurance and Heal. Feel free to try other methods. It seems to be a very solid stone door.

As Akahale and Ahadarai back away, Otto tries to pick the lock. He gets another burst of frost for his trouble.

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 263d8 + 4 ⇒ (7, 1, 1) + 4 = 13
Otto takes 13 damage and is immobilised (se)

Frost jets go after Akahale in the init order.

Initiative

Grafire 18 - DELAY

Mandrake 13
Shaeryyn 11

Hadarai 24
Otto 15
Akahale 13
Frost trap

Male Eladrin Paladin 10

"Otto, I can give you cover with my shield if you want to keep trying!"

On my turn, I can Aid Ally's Defense for Otto giving him a +2 to avoid the traps... if there are any dexterous folk, maybe they can try again to aid his lockpicking roll... I'm with him, if we can get through the door, it might be easier than pulling off 4 successes on disabling the trap

@Fabes: If Endurance and Heal are out, would difficult Dungeoneering help give a bonus (clues) to disabling the trap or openning the door?? (I know I may be stretching it... just looking for other skills in the skill challenge) -- of course, I also like Akahale's idea of just smashing the traps!

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale's best skill is being deeply scary. He's +18 Intimidate. I really don't think he can scare a door open, but he's very willing to try. Otherwise he can lie convincingly to it, talk to it really nicely, and possibly check it for magical or religious significance. We're a very non-dexterous party.

MAnny grumbles under his breath, (something about being wrong about the brains, in biceps or anywhere) and sends a barrage of mystic bolts at teh door.

MM the door for 11 pts dmg. Did that scratch it? ;P

You mean +20, since you're within 5 squares of me. But yeah, this party is uniquely unsuited for opening doors. No one trained in Thievery, no one trained in Athletics, two party members who specialize almost entirely in social skills. Really, I have no idea if we're able to actually get past this thing.

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

If we live to level, I'll retrain Akahale in Thievery. It's a class skill for warlocks.

Female Eladrin Wizard 9

I gots nothing. Hadn't gotten to knock, yet, as a ritual known, and no spells or anything that will effect a door.

Manny damages the door. Shaeryyn, you could also try magic missile. I forgot to say that you can try using brute force on it as a DC 25 Str check.

As the rest of the party try to glare at the door, pick the lock and otherwise help, an arrow of force streaks from the old man's outstretched hand and makes a crack in the door with a loud bang.

Initiative

Grafire 18 - DELAY

Shaeryyn 11
Otto 15

Akahale 13
Frost trap
Mandrake 13
Hadarai 24 - aiding Otto's defense

MAnny curls his hand up in a loose fist, and blows gently on his fingertips.

"Knock knock." The manic mage grins.

Female Eladrin Wizard 9

Shae waits to see if Manny's ritual works.

I don't believe he's casting Knock. He's just being a fancy pants about his magic missile. I don't think Manny knows Knock in any case.

Yeah, what Fabes said. ;)

Half-Elf Ardent 9

Otto begins tinkering with the traps.

Thievery, disabling one of the traps for one turn: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

Half-Elf Ardent 9

Otto begins tinkering with the traps.

Thievery, disabling one of the traps for one turn: 1d20+8

Female Eladrin Wizard 9

If we can magic missile the door down, since we have unlimited magic missiles, can we just assume we batter it down? I'll fire as many 10 damage volleys as needed :)

No, you can't assume that because the trap attacks every turn and Otto is currently right next to it, and Hadarai is also in the aoe. Otto - you need to make a save vs immob. MM damages the door.

Shaeryyn adds her own display of arcane force, adding to Manny's. Otto manages to wadge something into a jet. It should be safe for the next few seconds.

Initiative

Grafire 18 - DELAY

Akahale 13
Frost trap - stunned until next turn
Mandrake 13
Hadarai 24 - aiding Otto's defense
Shaeryyn 11
Otto 15

male Dragonborn Warlock 10 (Dark pact)

Akahale proceeds sedately away from the door.

Double moving a majestic four squares.
1d20 ⇒ 16 - save v slow

Half-Elf Ardent 9

Apologies. 1d20 ⇒ 1

Akahale backs away...

Initiative

Grafire 18 - DELAY

Mandrake 13
Hadarai 24

Shaeryyn 11
Otto 15
Akahale 13
Frost trap - stunned until next turn

Male Eladrin Paladin 10

Otto, on my turn I could grant you a save (+5 bonus) and then we could back out of the doorway and let the arcanes blast away at the thing... or do you want me to stay and give you +2 AC bonus while you continue on the traps?

The elderly mage sends another volley of force over his companions shoulders and into the door as the two braver ones continue to fiddle with the doorway,...

MM, 11 pts dmg

"Oh, you want more? You want suma dis'? C'mon an' git sum!" He smack-talks the door. You can't help but admire the elderly mages bravery.

Against a door. From behind several armed and armored companions,...

Manny continues to shoot at the door, whilst Hadarai hovers protectively.

To be clear, Hadarai, the trap attacks Reflex, not AC. A save may be more useful to Otto. Will assume Shaeryn carries on MMing.

Initiative

Grafire 18 - DELAY

Hadarai 24
Otto 15

Akahale 13
Frost trap - stunned until start of this turn
Mandrake 13
Shaeryyn 11

Male Eladrin Paladin 10

Mistype on my part -- it's a +2 to ally's defenses (not just AC)... waiting to find if Otto wants to try to back away from the door or stay put and try to disable it -- if he wants to run, the bonus save occurs on my turn and he would be free to move away (and *I* would move too)
