I was chatting with Painlord about level progression in PbP, and he suggested I check out the link below.

I've been feeling like PbP suffers from a bit of natural drag in terms of character growth—one level can take several months (especially when unforeseeable circumstances are happening in players' lives).

It's not all about leveling for me, but I am finding that I rely on it to feel a sense of forward momentum (especially true as a result of our hiatus). So I'd ask if we could consider a version of this...

Sean K. Reynold's Suggestion re: Stepped Advancement

Sean K. Reynold's suggestion is to have a series of 4 steps each level. Each time a character goes up a step, the player can add one of the following:

(a) Hit dice/hit points/bab
(b) Skill points
(c) Class abilities
(d) Saving throws

In his version, players would gain/take a Step every session or two. After completing all four steps, the character officially attains the next level.

For PbP, it might require something more number crunchy, which I acknowledge could be a bit of extra paperwork for Chris. I.e., dividing the Xp required for next level into quarters, and monitoring as we go.

It might also require 'stepping' without rest, for particularly lengthy dungeon crawls.

Re: the above.

I'm pretty 'meh' on the above change.

My discussion with the good Doctor was more about options and ideas rather than desire to implement for this campaign.

I support the Doctor making his feelings/desires known.

Yes, I certainly didn't mean to imply that Painlord made a whole-hearted endorsement. To clarify, though, Painlord, by 'meh' do you mean you don't care either way, or do you mean you're against the idea?

Male Human (Per +7 | Fort +17 Ref +13 Will +22 | AC 29 (f28/t15) | CMD 22)

I dunno. From my end I'd rather avoid the step progression. It's extra tracking and paperwork that I'd rather not do. That and I like the clean 'cut' of a leveling. For me this would take the sense of accomplishment out of it a bit.

I will however go with the majority - or Chris' ruling as it's his campaign and his extra paperwork too.

Speaking of paperwork. I haven't updated the treasure spreadsheet since 9/26/11. Ugh. Looks like a night with the laptop and catching up on DVR'd shows.

In regards to the leveling, I like the steps in theory, but even minor changes seem to bog down things and create more paperwork. And no, you haven't gone up a level yet. Crazy life doesn't allow for the micro tracking of points anymore so I'm playing it a bit by ear at this point.

Okay. Since the party has stopped for at least 12 hours, there will be no one to find upon returning to the caves. There's some story there though, so I'll play it out when people are done with the day.

I get to try out my 11th level paladin against Dyrant tonight. A straight Paladin has been interesting. Dyrant sleeps fitfully during the night.

First he's shot again and again by a goblin who won't stop critting him.

Then, he tries to escape a chair that randomly attacked him.

Then tries to escape a bat that came out of no where to bite him.

Nope, can't imagine anything happening to your pally tonight, how could it?

Failure. Had the party happily slaughtering everything until the final encounter when finally had all the butts in the party pucker all at once.

Failed to kill anyone, but had many fun moments with GM Chris...just couldn't end him, though not for lack of trying. The fought well and valiantly though two members of his party deserted him in the last encounter. The cleric healing the two of the 3 baddies for 31 hp in mid combat (thanks Cleric!) and the archer outside buffing for 4 rounds.

Had him using only a dagger for the most of the last fight, his $$$ main weapon in his off hand (unused), an expensive back scratcher.

Twas fun.

I'll have new Dyrant up tomorrow...too late after judging to make it happen now.

Good times. I was not looking forward to the relentless mocking if I died. Especially after rolling a 1 on that lunge. You had me at least considering reaching for that potion of gaseous form or withdrawing with my winged boots to regroup. I just figured half the party would be dead before Maverick could compose himself. Between Lenny's perfumes and his own vomit, he stunk worse than the creatures.

I went pretty much with Dyrant't suggestions and sold all, but what is shown above until people advise otherwise. The gold is about 1150 each. I'm subtracting a 6th for Silfir to keep the power curve normal. This puts the party at 5,000 each already with a guesstimate of around a 1000 gp in other unsold items. This puts us about on track with the PRD's suggestion about level to gold (unless you count sold items as full value in which case the party is double the limit, but I think that's crazy. What worth do 42 small sized short swords have?)

Uhhm. Aside from the fact I'm not sure where this is going, I don't see the connection between dying and being pregnant.

For the latter part, 'deathwatch' is pretty poorly named, since it lets you see various level of health (as well as undeath, etc.). So I figured it might give some insight on, say, a bun in the oven.

For the former part, just character flavor. I'm playing around with how the doctor does his doctoring. "Misses Lilypoodle, I can tell from the shine on your forehead that you've been pregnant for two weeks."

But perhaps I should have him focus on chocolate worms with red gooey filling.

Ellywinkle rushes forward to Glimmil. "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for coming." She bounces up and down, her blue hair flying free and her corsette barely holding in her bosom.

"You can lead the first tour!"

She pulls Glimmil close, pushing her bosom up against him and whispers in his ear, "Just take them to the playhouse and back. It's perfectly safe. We've blocked off the other passages." With that she pecks him on the cheek and turns to the crowd.

In the crowd, Glimmil can see Skie turn on her heels and walk quickly away.

Well played, sir. Well played.
