Savage Rifts RotRwT

As soon as she hears you have arrived, Mayor Lithari comes out to meet you in the square. Some folks have gathered around, but most are used to your presence and so ignore you for the time being.

"How bad is it?", she says matter-of-factly.

"The Coalition is performing some sort of operation in the area, but the commander has assured me that they are not interested in Garnettown."

D-Bee Mystic: Size: 0, Parry 8, Pace 6, Toughness 14 (7), Charisma -2, Bennies: 6, PPE: 20/20, Staff PPE: 10/7, ISP: 10/10

Shakti starts muttering to herself, not really loud enough to be overheard, but not quiet enough to be hard to understand for anyone that is trying either, "Yes, probably best that we put all our weapon in long term storage, throw a party, and get highly intoxicated before falling into one mass stupor. And since there is obviously no danger, we can feel free to sleep with our necks exposed."

Savage Rifts RotRwT

The elfin woman nods. "I'm not sure how you managed to speak to the commander, but do remember that the Coalition claims all of this area as their own. Anything they do here is dangerous. That said, thank you for looking into it. We shall prepare for the worst nonetheless. I do not want to be caught sleeping should they change their mind. If you'll assist, I would most appreciate it."

"I will protect you until I am relieved of my duty or die." says Auriel without a hint of sarcasm or humor.

"How can I help?" Burgurk asks simply.

D-Bee Mystic: Size: 0, Parry 8, Pace 6, Toughness 14 (7), Charisma -2, Bennies: 6, PPE: 20/20, Staff PPE: 10/7, ISP: 10/10

"What is next? Do we watch these Coalition soldiers for treachery? Build fortifications for this village? Or should we take the fight to them? I suggested to my new companions that we acquire a scout and question him. They declined on the grounds of the risks. However, I make the same offer to you; I can find you such a scout, if you are willing. I am confident I can do this without casting direct suspicion upon your people."

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Lithari merely shakes her head. "No, you've done what you can and I'd rather not poke the hornet's nest if I can help it. For now, you can assist in doing what you can to shore up our defenses. If they come knocking, we want to be ready." As she goes to direct each of you to a a place you might help, a loud scream goes up from somewhere in the town. The mayor looks to you as if to say, 'now what?'

Arriving at the scene, there is a large crowd forming around a very mutilated body of a woman, her clothes torn to shreds and her flesh no better. One of the local guards is failing at consoling another woman who is sobbing and pointing off in the direction of the forest. She keeps muttering something about "...a beast.. it came out of nowhere and it...it...", she devolves into crying again.

It is easy to see the direction it went as several makeshift walls have been torn down and you can see debris where it tore through the town and headed towards the forest...

Auriel doesn't even stop moving, but charges after the creature.

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Burgurk follows in his wake.

Running, in case the creature we're chasing is running too (or is just plain fast) :

Running: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Woo hoo!

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Auriel, need a Run check and anyone else who is giving chase... Going to start a chase as soon as everyone who wants to go chimes in.

Auriel and Burgurk take off after the creature, getting a glimpse of fur and claws crashing through trees just ahead...

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Going to go ahead and start the Chase, need Agility rolls from everyone on foot, Piloting (+2 for Speed) if Jonis is using her GG.. Anyone who maxes their initial running roll gets a +2 bonus on their Agility Check this first round. Then I'll draw cards and we'll go from there.

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Agility & Wild: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 61d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 = 6, a Success

Run: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Auriel begins sprinting and it's clear that he's had training in doing so.

Agility; Wild Die: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 31d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Thanks to the +2, a success as well.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Guess it's just you guys then...

Creature Agility: 1d10 ⇒ 81d6 ⇒ 2

Chase Round 1/5
Creature- JS
Burgurk- 7S
Auriel- 3C

The creature bolts ahead of you, tearing through trees and shrubbery as if it wasn't there. Burgurk hurries to catch up, his native instincts kicking in. Auriel, while trained to run fast, has difficulty with obstacles and almost runs into a tree directly ahead of him...

Need an Agility roll at -2 from you Auriel. On a Failure, take a level of Fatigue.. Then everyone roll Agility for next round.

D-Bee Mystic: Size: 0, Parry 8, Pace 6, Toughness 14 (7), Charisma -2, Bennies: 6, PPE: 20/20, Staff PPE: 10/7, ISP: 10/10

Shakti allowed herself a bit of an internal smile as the others ran off after the beast. She looks at the women to see if either was the boy's mother. It was an interesting ploy by the beast, and while not her place to interfere in the hunt of another, it was still one that was likely to be short lived. The town would now be warry of attacks, and start to look for where the beast was hiding. If it was smart, or even cunning, it would move on now for a different population.

She wondered silently if the boy had become the beast, or the other way around. If it could take different shapes, it might prolong its hunt a while yet, by taking the place of someone else instead. But if it was tied to the form of the boy, say by a curse or infection that had caused him to become the creature, then he would no doubt be found and killed relatively soon.

Of course, if that was the case, then the source of the curse might still pose these people a problem.

None of this was her concern, of course. As long as she was aware and warry of the creature, it posed little physical risk to her. And its hunt was merely its role in this world, hunter and prey.

Shakti walked over to the mutilated body, just to make certain she was in fact beyond the reach of life. Even grievous wounds could be survivable, depending on the amount of time elapsed, and whether or not major blood vessels had been severed. Without bleeding, even massive trauma to the flesh could be survived.

Healing Skill: 1d6 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 4
This is meant to look for signs of life, not provide treatment, which takes 10 minutes per roll.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

While the chase continues, the crowd around the woman grows, but they move to let Shakti investigate her wounds. This woman was definitely attacked by some sort of animal. Claw tears around her arms and legs as well as a massive bite wound in her shoulder are easily identified. What isn't clear at this point is what kind of creature, though Shakti has her suspicions. The blood pooled around the body has started to congeal and what skin Shakti can see has paled. There is no movement in her chest either. For all intents and purposes, this woman is dead.

Agility to Dodge | Wild Die: 1d8 ⇒ 81d6 ⇒ 2
Ace!: 1d8 ⇒ 1 that's a 7 with the -2.

Auriel spins around the tree and uses it as a springboard to launch himself from.

Agility to Chase | Wild Die: 1d8 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 5

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

DM SBM, Clint has said that "Participants and passengers with Action cards who do not have Advantage can take any non-Attack, non-Free Actions the GM decides is reasonable for the situation. Possibilities include Tricks or Tests of Will (possibly without Range penalties)".
If you agree with this, I'd like to try an Agility-based Trick during the current round, before rolling Agility for the next round :

Agility & Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 2 Oh well...nevermind.

New Chase Agility roll :
Agility & Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 3 = 5, a Success

Savage Rifts RotRwT

I would have allowed it...

Creature Agility: 1d10 ⇒ 91d6 ⇒ 1

Chase Round 2/5
Creature- 9S
Burgurk- 6C
Auriel- 2D

The creature stays out of reach of both of you, crashing through the brush as if it wasn't there. Just as you start to catch up, a smaller branch comes out of nowhere and crashes in front of you. Auriel slows enough to miss it, causing him to fall back a bit, but Burgurk is right next to it...

Burgurk make an Agility Roll at -2 or Suffer 1 Fatigue level. Actions and then next round!

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Agility & Wild: 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 31d6 - 2 ⇒ (6) - 2 = 4 Success, no need to roll again.

Burgurk manages to spot the swinging branch and duck out of the way at the last second...

Auriel continues to push himself forward after this creature that would harm innocents he has sworn to protect.

Agility | Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 3

Savage Rifts RotRwT

want to try that action again Burgurk or just run for it?

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Oh yeah, forgot about the Trick, thanks...

Agility & Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 6
Wild ACE!: 1d6 ⇒ 1 = 7 = TN for the creature's Agility roll...

Burgurk picks up a stick lying on the ground, and tries to throw it in between the creature's legs, hoping to trip it up.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Creature Agility v. TN 7: 1d10 ⇒ 31d6 ⇒ 3
Success, the creature Parry is -2 next round...
Burgurk Run Round 3: 1d6 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 6
Ace: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Creature Run Round 3: 1d10 ⇒ 101d6 ⇒ 5
Ace: 1d10 ⇒ 2

Chase Round 3/5
Burgurk- AC or 10D
Creature- QS
Auriel- 8D

Burgurk can take the Ace of Clubs and be in Melee Range, but unable to attack or the 10 of Diamonds and be at Long Range and unable to attack anyway. 3rd round actions!

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Um, SBM, a 7 vs. a 3 is a Raise (a Success would be 3,4,5,6), so wouldn't the creature also be Shaken, take -2 to its Agility roll (thus getting one less Action card to choose from), and have to roll to become un-Shaken on its Action card?
And, why would I be *unable* to attack on the 10D? Couldn't I make a Psionics roll, and if successful, subtract 4 to see if it hits?

Burgurk will take the 10D, so the creature acts first.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Let's see.. you're right on the Shaken thing. For whatever reason I was stuck on the default 4 TN, so it is Shaken. If I remember correctly though (my books are at home), Successful Tricks give only a -2 Parry and Shaken on a Raise. As for not being able to attack, in a Chase, you can only attack a participant if you have Advantage over them, meaning you have the higher card. I will double check when I get home though.

Agility | Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 1

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Oh, you're right, I don't have Advantage (unless losing his third Action card dropped the creature below a Queen - from the SWD Chase rules, "Characters who are Shaken at the start of a turn make their maneuvering Trait roll at –2"). I haven't been in many Chances.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Unfortunately it didn't cost him his Queen this round, just an 8. You still have an action for Round 3 though, that toss was during the 2nd round. It may affect his roll for the 4th Round..

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Shouldn't the creature roll to recover from Shaken in Round 3? Even if it's not doing anything this round, it may decide to next round...
And if it does recover from Shaken, *then* Burgurk will try another Trick in Round 3. But if it stays Shaken, doing another Trick won't get me anything, so Burgurk will just continue to chase the creature.
Please let me know when to roll Running and Agility for Round 4.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Right.. all that rolling and no action...
Shaken?: 1d6 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 5
He does recover, so you can attempt that trick again if you'd like.

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Same shtick (pun intended) :

Agility & Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 5
Agility ACE!: 1d6 ⇒ 3 = 9, the TN for the creature's Agility roll

D-Bee Mystic: Size: 0, Parry 8, Pace 6, Toughness 14 (7), Charisma -2, Bennies: 6, PPE: 20/20, Staff PPE: 10/7, ISP: 10/10

Back in the village, Shakti stands in order to address the onlookers.

"This one is beyond saving. Convey her remains to an appropriate place."

I had asked earlier, is either this woman or the one that was screaming the boy's mother?

Savage Rifts RotRwT

I thought I had answered that, Shakti. Apologies if I did not. Neither woman is the boy's mother and she is oddly nowhere to be seen.

Back in the village, some of the men come to help carry the poor woman's body to Old Man Duncan's place to be taken care of and given a proper burial...

Agility v. TN 9: 1d10 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 4

Meanwhile, the chase continues... Burgurk throws another stick, but this time it only causes the beast to duck.. Parry -2

Round 4 Creature Run: 1d10 ⇒ 81d6 ⇒ 6
Ace: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Burgurk roll for Maneuver and then I will pull cards. Auriel gets one, creature 2...

"Shakti, let's look for the boy. I worry about him."

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Round 4/5
Burgurk AS
Auriel QD
Creature 10S

The creature seems to get confused as to which direction it is going and it slows down. This allows Burgurk and Auriel to catch up some.

Both of you have Advantage and can act first. Burgurk is within melee range, Auriel is at Medium range.

Auriel will continue the chase, attempting to get into melee with the creature.

Agility | Wild Die: 1d8 ⇒ 61d4 ⇒ 3

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Jonis and Shakti, you may make notice checks while the crowd moves to allow the men to move the body.

Notice Success:
As you watch and wait for Auriel and Burgurk to return, you notice someone standing back in the crowd, attempting to stay hidden among the throng of people.

Success and Raise on Notice, as above plus::
It is a humanoid woman and she is covered in a white powder. Considering the proximity to the bakery, it could be flour...

Burgurk tries to throw a mental Blast at the creature :

Psionics & Wild: 1d10 ⇒ 71d6 ⇒ 6
Wild ACE!: 1d6 ⇒ 4 = 10, a Raise

And does
Damage: 6d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 2, 6, 3) + (6) = 28
Damage ACE*2!: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10
Damage ACE ACE!: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Doing 43 points of damage to the creature.

PP=66

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Dang Burgurk, overkill much.. :-)
As it appears the creature is about to disappear into the forest, it freezes in place. Its claws go to its head and it howls in pain. It then collapses into a heap. As you get close, the creature begins shrinking dramatically. When you reach him, you are staring at the body of a young boy, about 8 years old...

I assume it's the same boy we found earlier?

Auriel kneels and checks the boy's pulse to see if he still lives.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Heal Success:
The boy is barely hanging on. He seems to be in a state of suspended animation, which is slowing his biological functions.

Male Simvan Mind Melter; Wounds 0, Bennies 3/3; Parry 7, RATN 6, Toughness 13(8); Heal d4, Intim d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Psionics d12; 70 ISP

Yeah, I thought it might be the kid.

Once he sees the creature turn into the child, Burgurk tries to psychically heal him :

Psionics & Wild: 1d10 ⇒ 81d6 ⇒ 4 = 8, a Success and a Raise, up to 2 Wounds removed.

Burgurk turns to Ariel and says "Any ideas on how to keep him from turning back into the creature before we get him back to the village?"

Savage Rifts RotRwT

The boy starts to come to, Burgurk psychically removing the damage he had caused. At first he is too groggy to realize what is going on, but as you are talking, his eyes widen in horror. "Did I hurt anyone?"

"We'll get to that in a minute. Why don't you start by telling us the last thing you remember?"

Savage Rifts RotRwT

The fear is evident on the boy's face. "I.. I was helping Mama and.. and I accidentally ran into someone and made them drop their bread. They started yelling and then... then I was here."
