Rise of the Runelords Solo (Inactive)

Game Master Kiora Atua

Sandpoint needs a hero, and that hero is Jeremy Kithkin.

This is a thread for any OOC concerns you have.

So are you going with making Jeremy Chelaxian? Did you read my PM?

On the main campaign tab I have added maps of Sandpoint, the surrounding environs, and of Varisia.

Thanks. He is Chelaxian, it worked out perfectly. The maps are helpful as well.

Couple of questions at this point, since I don't know what's normal around here:

1) What is the convention on skill rolls here? For example, Jandar is currently using Diplomacy to gather info as he walks around. Do I roll it myself in-post, you roll as appropriate, I request the rolls, or something else?

2) For the contests in this celebration, you can pretty well assume Jandar will at least give his best shot at anything short of a direct physical fight against another. STARTING with Archery, but you can assume he'll try anything else skill-based (he'll take a look at the lizard race a couple of times before placing a bet to see if there is anything remotely predictable about it)

3) Is there any convention for speech here? I've just been putting it in quotes, but I notice that you are Bolding it.

Jandar or Jeremy? ;)

1) Skills are handled a couple of ways.

a. You can roll to gather information, or to accomplish tasks (like climb, or acrobatics). As a GM, it is my personal preference to make it very rare that I don't give you something in return for a knowledge-seeking roll. (as long as you're not obviously flailing around wildly and rolling randomly for no apparent end, such as rolling every single knowledge you have without actually having a clear reason to do so).

b. If I need you to roll, I will make a request and give you the results via spoiler tags. For example:

Please make a Reflex DC 10 roll

Success!:
You nimbly dodge a root on the forest ground. Good thing you were watching where you stepped!

Failure:
You trip on a big root. Take 1 nonlethal damage, and fall prone.

c. If you attempt to do something that I deem would require a roll, but did not, to expedite the process I will simply roll for you.

d. If I am making a secret roll for you (usually stuff like perception or sense motive vs bluff) I put it behind spoiler tags under "GM ROLLS". Obviously, you are not supposed to look at those. Sometimes I do this randomly for no reason to make it harder to meta-game.

e. I guess it's worth noting that I'm not a huge fan of taking 10 or 20 for perception in threatening areas like dungeons. In return, you can find stuff you miss with a roll by simply roleplaying out the search. Also, I promise you that anything uber important to advancing the story will not be hidden behind some arbitrary perception roll. If you miss out on something because of perception it will generally be some little trinkets, and as a solo player your WBL is gonna be pretty high as is.

Example:

  • Gallant walks into a room that is obviously the bad guy's super evil study of planning and diabolical evil. There is a secret compartment in the desk that holds the bad guy's journal! Gallant rolls perception and rolls a 5 :(. But that desk seems super suspicious, doesn't it? Gallant walks over to the desk and finds the journal anyways! Hurray for Gallant! =)
  • Goofus notices that Gallant was able to get around a low perception roll through roleplay. From now on, Goofus walks into each room, whether it is a random broom closet or an empty hallway, and runs his hands on all the doors, and the windows, and checks all the vases, and upturns all the furniture, and throws rocks on all the floor tiles in case of pressure plates! Goofus gets rewarded for his paranoia by getting a random encounter rolled on him for noisily ripping every dungeon room apart. Don't be Goofus. =(

2) Sounds good! I listed them out for a reason. Just wander over to whichever next contest you'd like to do. I plan on roleplaying this out a bit if you don't mind. This lets me introduce some townie NPCs to you. Literally this entire AP is about saving Sandpoint from a series of escalating threats, so it is important to get to know it.

3) Paizo board convention is bolded speech, italicized inner thoughts. Forum quirk I guess?

Thanks, it is different here. MW and GitP use colored text for speech :)

I will keep that all in mind. Also, yay RP! Jeremy is super competitive, so best believe he's hitting up the contests.

And for reference, Jandar LeFey is a different personality I use on characters. Jeremy is friendlier, so when the Cha went over 10 I swapped which one I was using. I'll stop making the mistake at some point.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah, slightly embarrassing rolls there. Guess I'm getting them out before combat.

I'll be picking up PU this afternoon, I think the sum effect will be free Weapon Finesse for now. Next level will be significant, though, on both halves.

Yep, just weapon finesse for now.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Seriously, I'm glad I didn't pick Disheartened as my drawback. No rolls over a 10 on the die yet.

Sorry the post took so long, the PU rush took the site down for a while when I would normally have been able to post

Ok, I have a question about the fight before I post my next action. Where is that other Goblin at? I made Perception to be able to see where he is, and if it's hiding by the same wagon the boy just crawled under I have a sudden priority shift.

There are no other goblins under the wagon where the little boy is.

The first goblin you noticed has already run off into the chaos, and is inidistinguishable from the other goblins running around terrorizing people (or in some cases getting killed by the handful of townspeople with class levels)

Alright, just plotted out Jeremy for the next dozen levels or so, assuming I survive to 2. He gets exponentially more deadly pretty much every level, not holding back on this. If you want to know my career map, just ask and I'll show you. Pretty much item-independent (other than needing to find a freaking charged item that can heal).

Sounds good :] Getting to 2 will be heavily dependent on luck, it seems.

And that concludes Part 1 of Burnt Offerings: Festival and Fire. Yay :D

Please tell me there is a level-up in the near future :P

According to the AP's leveling path, you still have a couple fights to go. They aren't meant to be particularly challenging.... but solo it might be different :P we'll see.

If you were being awarded exp as normal, you'd be level 2 already. This is your experiment, so it is up to you what you want to do. I don't mind either way.

Keeping it to the AP progression, so we'll see. The fights are surprisingly tough, and one random roll can make or break things much more easily.

There's honestly only one fight before lvl 2 I'm worried about for you :p

You'll probably realize which one I'm talking about once you get there ;D

Here's hoping, then. I misplaced my starting gold by a bit, forgot that this character wouldn't be able to craft his own heals. If I get to Two, though, it shouldn't matter. Still looking forward to finding a wand, but I have no faith in Paizo treasure.

Major question here, one that will become important possibly as soon as next fight. Quite a few more Veils have come out, and are in the playtest document (or even the other PDFs besides the Vizier). Am I limited to the ones up on the PFSRD, or can I use ones from the document?

The Dropbox link for the Supplemental document is at:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9fblkac0obf9mzx/Supplemental.pdf?dl=0

Anything marked Vizier I'd gain access to. Anything not marked Vizier and not in the Blood slot, I could get with a feat.

WotR Global Buffs/Debuffs: ----

I'm fine with gaining access to the playtest materials.

I usually don't allow retraining mid-game, though. (I am very flexible about retraining when you level up.)

However, this is your experiment, so it is up to you :)

I'm not actually going to retrain. If that was part of the plan, I'd have asked for permission to redo some of my gold purchases during the chapter switch. Remember that my Veils swap out daily (or more, later on). Know now that I'm fighting undead, things like the Loyal Paladin's Spear of Light may come in handy.

...that, and I actually wrote and submitted one of the new ones that got accepted (the Frostbite Halo). Most of the stuff on that doc can't be retrained into anyway (races and PrCs are the bulk of it). Later on, if I get the chance to get specific items somewhere, then the Akashic Catalyst item will become critical to what I can do.

Ah, okay, sounds good :) Just make sure you let me know its from that doc you use one of the newer veils.
