I'm opening the recruitment for the PFS scenario 'First Steps, part I: in Service to Lore'. In this campaign 4 new Pathfinder recruits will make their first steps, and become familiar with several of the factions they get to choose from.

I haven't yet set a date on which I'll close recruitment, but I'll let it be known in the thread once I do.

Requirements:
I'm running this scenario for 4 characters, level 1 exclusive. I won't accept characters that have played this scenario before. It's fine if you've played it with another character before, but don't spoil anything for the other PCs.

Make sure the character you apply with is PFS legal. If you don't know how to make a PFS legal character, please read the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play. If you've read it and got stuck, I'm willing to help you.

If you've played other scenarios with your character before, please provide the Chronicle Sheets in your character's profile.

Activity:
I'm searching for an active group of players. Preferably more than 1 post a day. If real life prevents you from making any posts for a period of time, please let me know you'll be gone for some time. I'll consider pauzing the scenario for a few days, depending on how long it takes for you to return. Keep in mind if you miss out on most of the scenario, I won't be able to give you any rewards that come with completing the scenario.

GM style:
This will be my first time GMing a scenario. When playing a scenario with a PC I value roleplay highly, and so will I value it highly as GM. At the end of the scenario I'll give each player a Chronicle Sheet, which will prove your character has finished the scenario.

For those who want to read some more about the scenario:

Location:
In Service to Lore takes place in the teeming metropolis of Absalom—the City at the Center of the World. Here the Pathfinder Society makes its home, and Pathfinders from all over the world consider Absalom a second home, as many of their missions take place within the city’s walls. A settlement of over 300,000 souls, Absalom boasts many districts that are virtually cities unto themselves, and PCs in this adventure will visit several of them in the course of their mission.

Introduction to PFS and the factions:
Pathfinders explore Golarion in service to lore. This widespread group of treasure hunters, thrillseekers, sages, and voyagers make it their lives’ work to uncover lost artifacts, map neglected ruins, and learn forgotten knowledge. They do these things for the sake of lore, as well as for fame. The Pathfinder Society publishes the Pathfinder Chronicles, a multi-volume series of chapbooks highlighting some of the most amazing finds by field agents. Pathfinders are part archaeologist, part historian, and all adventurer. Many established Pathfinders make their own way in the world, following their interests or tracking down leads to greater mysteries. These established few are still subject to orders from their superiors, but the least prestigious tasks are usually reserved for those new to the organization. The Society is governed by the Decemvirate, 10 anonymous leaders who pull strings and guide the organization from Skyreach in the Grand Lodge of Absalom. They hand down orders from their secret posts to venture-captains, who in turn pass the orders to field agents. The Society has few rules, but all Pathfinders are expected to perform the Three Duties: explore, report, and cooperate. Idle Pathfinders are useless to the organization, and agents must seek out secrets or further their work in exploration of some kind, always growing and gathering knowledge. This exploration would be worthless if not for frequent reports. Pathfinders must send back accounts of their adventures, many of which end up published by the Decemvirate. Finally, Pathfinders are great heroes from dozens of countries and backgrounds with thousands of different motivations and allegiances, and the Decemvirate expects that individual Pathfinders will not interfere with one another, and absolutely never let a conflict between themselves come to blows. Despite the mandate to cooperate, Pathfinders have myriad motivations and often fall in with similarly minded factions within the organization, or external groups with close ties to the Society. As fresh new recruits, most Pathfinders know only the venture-captains who give them their training, especially Ambrus Valsin, the man in charge of daily operations in the Grand Lodge.

A gruff, no-nonsense man, Ambrus has little tolerance for laziness and often gives young Pathfinders their first taste of what being a field agent entails as a way of keeping them from staying idle too long. Among the various factions allied with the Pathfinder Society are five powerful nations locked in a shadow war for control of Absalom—Andoran, Cheliax, Osirion, Qadira, and Taldor. While the Pathfinder Society has no direct interest in this political standstill, they nevertheless have much to gain from allying with these powerful nations. Though they aren’t a recognized political body, the Varisian swindlers and smugglers known as the Sczarni provide their own support for the Society, acting as fences, contacts, or mules when the organization needs to get relics or agents in and out of hostile territory unseen. Within the Society itself, fractured groups such as the Shadow Lodge*, Silver Crusade, and the Lantern Lodge* each work to ensure the organization’s resources are applied where they feel they’re most needed, be that for the betterment of the active field agent, in distant Tian Xia, or spreading good deeds throughout the Inner Sea. A new batch of Pathfinder agents has completed their training and now stand fresh and wide-eyed before the towering structure of Skyreach awaiting their first assignment for the Pathfinder Society. Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin has just the task for them, both to keep them relatively safe in the dangerous world beyond, and to familiarize them with Absalom, their new home, and some of the most influential allies of the Society in the City at the Center of the World.

* Note these factions don't exist anymore. For that reason you cannot join them.

Reporting in.

I'm headed off to lunch in a sec, but wanted to express my interest.

I am around during the day and can most multiple times most days.

I will be out of town next weekend for a con (15-17) and will not be able to post much from there, but other than that I should not have a problem maintaining a fast schedule.

As a note I have GMed First steps several (3+) times, but I have never actually managed to play it.

I will type up one my my characters this afternoon. (I have several with 1xp from GMing The Confirmation, shall I just list the chronicle sheet in the profile or do you need a picture/scan?)

Thanks

dotting I will see what I can come up with.

Grand Lodge

I would like to join and I can easily post more than once per day

@Pirate Rob: I'd like to see the actual sheet of the character you apply with. So a link to a picture/scan in your character's profile would be nice.

well this looks to be most interesting I can't wait for it to begin.

Scarab Sages

Very interested here! haven't played a PFS yet but I really want to. I can create/post a character tonight.

Grand Lodge

Likewise Liara.

I'll open 2 tables if I have enough recruitments. Hopefully enough people will apply that I can make 2 interesting parties.

So far the characters are very promising!

Yes this should be fun.

Scarab Sages

@StephNyan, do I need to submit a fully-created character, or would it work if I posted a character concept and fleshed him/her out once the party starts forming, based on what would balance well?

other details: I can easily do 1+ posts per day. Been looking for a PBP PFS game for a few days now and this one is finally looking promising. I have GMing experience in face-to-face Pathfinder games and PC experience in face-to-face 4e.

Grand Lodge

I propose Mary Dotingham, human paladin of Abadar and newly minted member of the Silver Crusade, for consideration. The character background, detailed character sheet and link to PDF are in my profile.

As for demeanor, Mary has been given up by her mother, her church, and now the paladin trainers. She's tired of listening to others preach, and would prefer to be a paladin that just does the right thing and hope others see it for what it is and maybe that might be the influence.

As for posting quantity, I post quite a bit as my other alias (a salty dwarf druid with a lion companion). I'd like to play a very different kind of character, one with some social grace instead of laughing at inappropriate dwarf jokes.

Grand Lodge

It'd be a laugh if Mary would meet Machiko.
I could see our personalities collide.

@Rabbai: I'll select players based not only on class and stats, but also on background and personality. So if you create a concept for your character and want to flesh him out later that's fine, but include some background and personality in the concept. It'll give me an impression of interaction between your character and others.

Hello. I updated this character with a basic history and personality (and avatar) and plan on adding to it as the night (or next few days) progresses. I'll finish up his stats and whatnot soon, especially if he's likely to be included in the game.

Definitely Interested, never played PFS before and currently reading the free download on what is legal and such. And other help in this matter is appreciated as I would like to try my hand at it at least once.

I tried to find resources on what all Archetypes may/maynot be legal and classes. But having little luck since I am a total newbie in what I am looking for lol.

Grand Lodge

additional resources

this should provide all legal builds I would also suggest looking at the guide to guides on the advice page of the forms for advice on builds and general ideals that you would like to do. also welcome to the wonderful world of pathfinder society hope you have fun.

@Liara: Seeing how fast people apply I'm going to end recruitment in just a few more days. We should be running by the end of the week.

@Corerue: Was about to answer, but Liara beat me to it. Welcome to PFS, and I'm looking forward to see what you come up with!

What point buy will we be using? I'm gonna finish my character but want to make sure first. 20?

@Rabbai:
PFS uses the "High Fantasy" choice of 20 points. Please read the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, you'll find it to be very helpful when building your character.

I noticed you use the profile of your account itself as a character. If you go to "Pathfinder Society" at the top left of your screen, then to "My Pathfinder Society" which appears in the grey bar on top, you'll get on a page where you can create multiple characters for PFS. If your PFS number is #123456, your first PFS character will be #123456-1, second #123456-2, etc.
Or you could go to "My Account" on top and there you'll the option to "Make Changes" to your PFS characters. (In "My Account" you can also make aliases, which you can use for non-PFS campaigns.)

Scarab Sages

Great, thanks. I thought 20 was standard but I saw some other pbp recruitments that looked to be PFS-compliant but were starting with 18 point buy. Maybe I misread them.

Thanks, I'll take your advice there.

Great to hear we might be starting by the end of the week!

Scarab Sages

In case anyone is interested or confused by my posting - VCavallo = Rabbai. I'm having some account/alias/character technical difficulties but should be in the clear now ; )
Ok, I shall now stop harassing this thread with my junk.

Appearance:

At 6'5" he made for an imposing figure, clad in his masterwork field plate and adorned with spikes only made his image more intimidating to say the least. He carried a battered greatsword across his back and a longbow that had seen better days as well. He had the walk of a man who had seen battle many times and underneath the armor he had the scars to prove he had suffered greatly in his short life.

Close image to what Vitarri appears fully clad in armor. (Somewhat :p)

Vitarri's Greatsword - Oathkeeper

Beneath the armor his body bears several scars, adorning many places on his body. The greatest concentration of them are across his back. Shoulders and his hands. He has a spot on his left shoulder that is a mass of scarified skin, the same place that most slave's are tattooed or branded.

He has white hair, gold colored eyes that shine in the dark and a pale complexion. Behind his ears and along the back of his head he has scattered sets of white feathers that sweep back along his skin, emphasizing how inhuman he was. A pair of vestigial wings sit flat against his back, barely anything more then decoration as they are undersized and too weak to bear him aloft or even glide.

The only item of note is a silken scarf that he keeps tucked inside his armor. When he looks at it is the only times that the armored hulk shows weakness of any kind. He becomes a completely different person and for the briefest moment he appears lost and deeply hurt.

Personality:

Initially:
Cold demeanor: He is practical and realistic, speaking in an even tone to everyone, never talking about himself and asking few questions.

Calm: Instead of worrying or getting scared, Vitarri takes necessary measures to prevent, correct or minimize the problem.

Competitive: Vitarri is very competitive and puts all of his efforts in succeeding, it's the only way he has learned to press forward is when he is presented with a challenge.

Once you get to know him...

Helpful: His cold demeanor hides a helpful nature, he tends to do things that ensure no one notices his aid. He doesn't want admiration or thanks for doing what is right.

Loyal: His initial impression may put people off but underneath the armor, the scars and the battered mind is a very loyal comrade. One who won't abandon his comrades when the going gets tough, when the situation turns grim Vitarri will continue to fight and look for ways to turn the situation in their favor.

Courageous: Evil lurks in the world and Vitarri wants to do nothing more then to stop it from harming others.

Background:

Vitarri is a broken man, barely remembering who he once was in fractured dreams and nightmares. He barely remembers being born in Cheliax, a terrible place for one of his kind for sure, when his body started to change and his origins became more noticeable. He was quickly captured and enslaved alongside his family by one of the twisted noble houses. Which one he can't remember, as the head injury he received damaged his ability to recall. While in their care he was branded a slave and set to perform tasks as his masters saw fit. They took his wife and his little girl from him, separating them by placing them in another manor somewhere in the city.

He proved to be stubborn that for his constant disobedient attitude he was often beaten and whipped. They worked him until exhaustion and starved him repeatedly for their continued amusement; it was a miracle he survived three long years of that treatment. All the while biding his time to try and find his family. It wasn't until he instigated a slave uprising that he and his family were reunited long enough to escape from that terrible place. They became separated though during the fighting when he placed them on a ship bound for Andoran, ensuring that no matter what happened those he cared for were safe. He promised them he would find them somehow. He continued the fight until him and a handful of survivors hijacked a ship, sailing for all they were worth and leading the Cheliaxian fleet away from the other slave ship.

The Chelixian's caught up with them and nearly sank their ship off the coast of Absalom, it was during the fight that he received a severe head injury and suffered memory loss. The remaining slaves piloted their sinking vessel within three miles of the Andoran coast; the billowing smoke from their burning vessel attracted a patrol of Absalom Naval Frigates. While their ship burned to the waterline, they were taken the rest of the way to Absalom and from their he has struggled to remember the horrors he faced in Cheliax. Working at night as a laborer until the day he met some Mercenaries dedicated to worshipping Gorum. These hardened, scarred men and women surprised him with their intimidating looks and the confidence in which they carried themselves. When he pressed them for membership the first time they ignored him completely, but he remained persistent and eventually it paid off. However the leader of the band knew that he was an escaped slave. So he offered him a knife and a choice. Cut the brand from his skin and free yourself or remain a miserable little laborer...

It was an easy choice and one he never regretted, from there he traveled with them for a time across Absalom. All the while learning the Gorumskagat along with the mercenary’s superior tactics. Again he found himself beaten down, battered and injured. This time however it was for a purpose, he'd grow stronger and punish those who thought they could hold him down. Hoping to one day meet a foe worthy of his blade. He is a very devout follower of the Lord of Iron, enjoying the simplicity of his god’s commands and wishes for how he lives his daily life.

Ten years has passed since he arrived in Andoran and became a Gorumite. He barely remembers the woman and little girl in his fractured memories, feeling like it was a dream and that the man he remembered was someone else entirely. The only reminder of his past is a silk scarf he wears around his neck...

It is his most prized possession...

His wife would be 33 and his little girl would be 17 by now. But this is something that he doesn't know, his memories are too scattered...

Grand Lodge

Some of the above is incorrect in the appearance at least, it is corrected in his profile. I tried to not make him bland but he is 1st level and there are no real adventurous exploits for him as of yet~ And feedback is appreciated, hopefully he is built right, I tried to follow the rules as best I could. =/ Thanks for the help!

The Exchange

I'd like to throw in my hat as well for submission.

The info is in my alias, but Misarru is a Tiefling Rogue joined with the Scarzni. A hunter and interpretor of new pieces of information for both the Society and Scarzni.

@Vitarri_Tyrim: As long as it's correct in your character's profile that's fine. That's where I'll look when selecting the players for the tables.

Grand Lodge

Roger that, we can only put forward one character correct? As we appear to be lacking arcane submissions. :/

Silver Crusade

I made a mistake and posted just a regular alias instead of a PFS official character. This is my official PFS character of Mary Dontingham, which is the same as before and has all the same stuff, but I have registered it as a PFS character.

Sorry for the confusion it might cause.

@Mary: Okaydokay!

@Vitarri: I had not given thought to the amount of characters one can put forward. I'll allow a maximum of 2 characters to be put forward by any one person. Perhaps some new class combinations will open up.

@GM are you looking for extensive background/personality typed up? How extensive a write up are you looking for, also is there anything else you want?

@Rabbai: Okay! At least with stats I can consider your character. I plan to give selected players some time after being selected to finalize the details.

@Pirate Rob: It doesn't have to be incredibly extensive, but try to provide at least some basic info. I'd like to get an impression of how you'll play your character and how he'll fit with other characters. Parties will be partly based on classes and partly on an interesting mix of personalities. How'd you character become who he is? What motivates him? Why'd he join the Pathfinder Society? What kind of person is he, brave and stout or shy and withdrawn?
