Not too many ideas floating around in my head for a fix right now. If you plan on keeping a Dexterity focused, Two-Weapon fighting type; multiclassing into a Channeler or taking Magecraft to give you Shield or Mage Armor are the only ways I can think to give you any significant bonuses to your A.C.
You could also try multiclassing into Fighter. Feats like Two-weapon Defense(Core rulebook), Combat Expertise(Core Rulebook), Crane Style(Ultimate Combat) and the Two weapon Fighter's Archetype(Advanced Player's Guide), mixed with fighting defensively are all ways to help your character survive most encounters.

Hey guys. Here is a post that Nightflier sent me regarding his absence.
Hi, guys. I am terribly sorry for disappearing like this, but I can't log in to Paizo, except via my mobile phone, and I can use my phone for gaming. I am trying to do something about this situation and I am terribly sorry for letting all of you down. I kinda feel ashamed, although it was not my intention to raise your hopes up and then fail you. I am going to my provider's place of business tomorrow and I'll try to see if the problem is something on their end. I tried to access Paizo from other providers and that works, but I can not change my ISP during next two years. I hope that all of you are OK.

![]() |

Well, my ISP problems are resolved. It seems that Paizo was marked as a pirate site by someone in some government agency that takes care of these things, and that got cleared a couple of days ago, when my country got accepted on PayPal. So, after I don't really know how long, I have my access to Paizo back.
At this time, I don't know what will this mean for my games. I am still recovering from a death of a close family member, so the complexities of running several games are beyond me right now.
I apologize to all of you because of my absence and my inability to run the game I've started. I suspect that I'll need more time to deal with the things that are happening to me. But I also suspect that when I finally finish dealing with them, nobody will want to continue the game that was so long on hiatus.
I can't really say when I'll be able and/or willing to once again run play by post. I hope it will happen in a month or two. But when it does, I'll contact you via private messages and ask you if you want to game with me once more.
So, all the best to all of you. :)
I am going to be present on the boards from now on, so if you wish to send me PMs, I'll be here to read them.

Llaelian |

Nightflier,
It's always been a great pleasure to game with you and you've devoted countless hours creating a fantastic setting for us.
While I'll be delighted to play again with you, for now I just want to wish you all the best in your RL and to thank you again for these years of gaming.
Llaelian aka Gilian.

![]() |

Nightflier,
I haven't had as long a history with you as some of the others, but have enjoyed every post and doing the background reading to catch up on your game has been a pleasure. I'm sorry for your loss and I wish you and you family well and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. When you're ready to play again, it's great to hear that your government has found it in their hearts to forgive those terrible Paizo people and that your access is restored. When the time is right, I'll be interested in hearing what you might take on. Good luck. It's been a lot of fun playing with you.
Michael aka Crunk

Solvistania Elghreah |

Nightflier,
Like Llaedian, I have really enjoyed the opportunity to play in your games. Solvistania is one of the funnest characters I have played and you did a wonderful job in giving her a setting where she can shine, so to speak. Should you get the urge to run again, I will be waiting for you, he he.
I hope time helps to make your pain bearable and know my thoughts are with you.
Thanks for the fun times!
Eric aka Solvi.

Vikturiun |

I barely started playing with you before all this unfortunate business occurred, but what I read and looked into while preparing my character got me very excited, particularly as I was already a Midnight setting fan. I hope you are coping well and we'll see you if and when you are ready.

![]() |

Hi, guys. I just want to give you an update. A great number of problems in my personal life should be resolved by the middle of May, so I will probably be able to run a pbp once again.
The thing is, I really don't want to restart Midnight. This game is dormant for a very long time now, and I really think that it should be allowed to rest in piece.
But, all of you have invested time and energy in creating your characters and all of you have shown intricate and excellent role playing, so I really want to make it up to you.
This is why I am limiting myself to running only one game on these boards in the next year or so and I don't want to recruit additional players for it.
The thing is, I know that I don't want to return to Midnight for a long while, but I really don't have a setting chosen for this new game. It could be any published setting that I have access to, or even my homebrew world.
Now, I am asking you:
1) Would you consider playing with me once again?
2) If so, what kind of a game you would like to play?
3) In what setting - existing one or homebrew?
4) What starting level and point buy would you prefer?
So, think about it and get back to me with answers when you can.
If you decide that you do want to play, we can proceed to creating characters and I can start a game in 3 weeks at the latest.

Duncan Bloodforged |

I would like midnight to continue. This might be fever talking, but I think that you are disrespecting your own world and time, since after a break (caused by you) you always want to scrape everything after making tons and tons of plans and having gamemastergasms. You just get another idea, see some new setting, get some new rules and that seems shiner and better than the stuff you already worked for a lot. That caused the constant rule changes in Midnight you were trying to implement, and characters being reworked.
And one of the things I really hate is unfinished story, just left hanging there with all the unused potential, especially after we have all invested in the game and the characters. (I'm speaking for myself, but I'm pretty sure the others feel the same way).

Vikturiun |

Midnight is what attracted me to this group, since I was already a Midnight player. It felt like a great stroke of luck to come upon a group that also plays my "home" setting.
That being said, if you were to abandon it, I would have to consider whether or not I wanted to continue, as I have plenty of games on the go, and continuity is more important than the straight appeal of a given game. My favorite games are the longest running ones. Seems like it would be a shame to end this one.

Sorok Hamfael |

I understand your reasoning. I had to call an end to a table-top game I had been running for well over a year. It was starting to spiral out of hand from what I had originally wanted with the PC's with their power level but more than that I had just run out of steam for it.
Midnight is what originally drew me to the game and while I didn't agree with all of the changes you made to the setting, the story you created held me on a lot longer than most would have. I agree with Duncan, I would like to see the Midnight game continue but I don't want to force you into running a game you no longer want to.
Unfortunately even if the Midnight game does return, Sorok will likely not be there. I have recently been drawn into several other games during this last hiatus and I don't think I have much time for another one right now. If something doesn't work out or if one of my other characters should be killed, both are fairly probable right now, then I would be likely to return. I'll still keep watching to see what happens but until then however, this is my official notice that I am leaving the Midnight game.
" Gilian, Chops, Duncan, Solvistania, I' was a blast role-playin' it out with ye all over these las' few years. Vikturiun, Ilyamiel, Crunk, Sky'tor, an' all the rest o' ye who couldn' be here, it were a shor' time I go' t' know ye all bu' I hope tha' I get a chance t' fight the Shadow with ye all again sometime. Maybe sooner than later."
-Sorok
It was hard to see, as Dwarves were a stoic and stubborn lot to begin with, especially now with the Dwarf who now had a heart of stone, but a small tear began to well up in the Dwarf's eye. Perhaps not all emotion had been lost to this Dwarf with whatever had happened to him over the last seven years. But it was certain to those who were watching that he would never forget them.

Crunk |

1. Yes, no question.
2. Pathfinder or something closely related.
3. I also was definitely attracted to Midnight and I'm not sure what other settings you have access to. Black Company? Razor Coast? Seems it should be something with a gritty edge.
4. I like a start level at either 1 or around 5. Characters are pretty limited at 1, but you get to see the whole arc of their growth. 5 lets you have a pretty established character with a good history, but gives plenty of room for growth before things get too crazy.

DarkOne the Drow |

What to think about... I just waiting for you to announce action time. :D
1) Would you consider playing with me once again?
Oh definitely! You an excellent GM with wonderful creative imagination.
2) If so, what kind of a game you would like to play?
Mainly fantasy is my main staple with non-human characters. Though have played sci-fi and doom & gloom (Midnight) settings, and even a homebrew hybrid setting of high fantasy, high sci-fi, apocalyptic future, superhero/villain and high supernatural (horror/doom). Even played one as deities controlling planes.
3) In what setting - existing one or homebrew?
I love homebrew settings, for they rather different, usually custom races. Though I fine with any setting.
4) What starting level and point buy would you prefer?
I have no preference. Can start playing level 1 all they way to deity levels.
You forgot one question, the rule set! Definitely Pathfinder mechanics.
Oh, it was seeing your Midnight game that got my full attention, and your invite into the game to enjoy your GM style of managing the game.
PS: If you go on with the current Midnight, can we first fix up Illiameyl. Illiameyl is my first fighter type melee character. I normally play magical races and classes, though stealthy classes comes in second, or a combination of magic and stealth.

Solvistania Elghreah |

Hmmmm. I am of two minds on this. On the one hand I would like to see some conclusion to Solvi's story, whether she is able to help Queen Aradil against her Father and find some measure of happiness with Durathoin. However, there has been a lot of character turnover and since she was one of the Original Bonebearers she does not feel a strong connection with the other characters in the party. So I do feel maybe it would be a good idea to retire her at least for the time being.
Still, I understand if the rest of the group wants to continue with Midnight Solvi would be a necessary part of the group so I would have no problem with continuing to play her in that respect.
If you wanted my honest opinion, Nightflier, I think the Midnight story arc has played itself out. Maybe transferring the characters to a homebrew setting would work, but I think you lose some character flavor in the translation. I think it would be best to move on with something else, with new characters.
I have not thought of any specific settings to play in, so I will echo DarkOne's comments on possible settings. I will give it some further thought and will post specifics later.

Vikturiun |

It is funny, but I have had this exact conversation with my Midnight group. To a degree, I felt that they weren't getting the setting entirely, and as cool as the setting is, it feels as though it misses out on a lot that Pathfinder has to offer... the other classes, interesting creatures, setting, and even the simplicity of being able to conduct transactions in gold. As GM, I wanted to shift them out into another setting that I thought might suit them better. They all voted to keep the setting and press on. I had even given them the same option of transporting their characters over to another setting (came up with a way to do it, in-game as well). They persisted. This created some headaches for me in trying to figure out how to make the setting work for them, but they were too attached to their characters and the story to move on.
As a result, we've kept on playing it another year, and they still seem to be having fun. In a way, it was a vote of confidence in my game, that even though I wasn't sure how well it was working out, they wanted to continue it.
Don't know if your thought process is at all the same, but thought the parallel might help you when making your decision.

Gilian |

I've read all the opinions around and my mind is similar to Solvi's.
I've played Gilian for more than 3 years and while I'll gladly play in an other game of yours, I think this game should rest.
I understand why the new players would want to go on but with all the history and the players/characters we left behind, I don't think resurecting that game will work. The fact that Nightflier as a DM also thinks the same means a lot. I mean, he has to come up with all the new ideas and I would not want him to feel compelled to get the game going.

![]() |

Very well.
Than this is formally an end to Midnight game - or at least this Midnight game.
It was great fun and honor.
Now, what next?
I would very much like to run another game for you guys, but I am not interested in seeking new players, so if I can't get enough players here, I will not run it. At this time, the minimum number of players that I am ready to accept is four.
I have most of the published settings, although not the latest ones, such as Razor Coast, but I also have my home brewed world, that you can check by clicking on the link in my profile.
Right now, I can't really say anything more, since I don't know what will your decision be - but whichever game world in question, my game will be grim, morbid and deadly, as usual. :)

Vikturiun |

Sounds like things might tip towards cancelling this game, if that happens here's my thoughts.
1) Would you consider playing with me once again?
2) If so, what kind of a game you would like to play?
3) In what setting - existing one or homebrew?
4) What starting level and point buy would you prefer?
1. Yes; I only got a glimpse of your gaming style, but what I saw looked good.
2. Pathfinder is tops, but there are a few others I'm always open to; I'd love to try Dresden, can always play d6 Starwars, and L5R is a great game. I've played just about everything and can even learn new systems quickly, so I'm pretty open minded on that front.3. Any. I like established settings, but new homebrew is fine too. The only thing I dislike is stepping into a long running homebrew world where there are a lot of things that go unsaid that new players have no way of knowing. All things considered, an established setting is probably better, and if we play Pathfinder, Golarion makes the most sense. I also like that playing in Golarion allows us to actually take advantage of all the features of the game, including regional flavour.
4. 1 or 5. As crunk said above, these are good levels to start at as they are not too far in and allow you to still feel a few things out with a new character.

![]() |

To answer few of the questions...
I will absolutely run Pathfinder game. I really don't have the time to learn other systems. The only thing in question is will it be ONLY Pathfinder, or will I allow 3pp products and 3.5 stuff. That will depend on the game world.
Established setting is easier for me to run, since I don't have to explain everything about the world, but homebrew is more creatively challenging.
This is the info on the city that will be the center of the game if you decide to play in my home brew:
Founding and Gatehouses
Midian is a crumbling metropolis, a vast decadent and corrupt city, with history that stretches thousands of years - a city that outlived several empires which ruled it, and continues to exist in some kind of urban unlife.
One of the city's nicknames is "Crossroads of Worlds". That is true both literally and metaphorically. The city was founded at the height of Long War, as a staging ground for the invasion of Shadowlands, that once stretched beyond what is now known as Cursed Crags mountain range. First building ever built in Midian is Sunhome Gatehouse, which once led to the main square of Heliopolis, the City of Light, before it sunk beneath the tidal waves caused by the raising of Acheron Isles from the depths of the ocean. During the time of Gathering of the Armies other gatehouses were built, in order to hold huge gates that would serve as portals for instantenous transport of armies and provision from the various countries and regions of Norgir and even beyond.
The second gatehouse built is Deadhouse, which held a portal leading to the underground metropolis of Golgotha, the capital of an uderground realm of undead and demi-undead beings, ruled by the mysterious Necrarch. It is said that this realm was destroyed by the raising of Cursed Crags by Mitra's hand and rare are the artefacts of this civilization that survived to the present day, but the necromantic clashes between Necrarch and the undead great wyrm that even now rules the Scourge of Acheron are well documented.
After Deadhouse, many other gatehouses were built, and the city was born around them. With time and everchanging tides of war, some nations disappeared or were vanquished, new nations were founded, and even their memory turned to ash before the Long War was finally over. But the gatehouses remained, even when not fulfilling their designated function. Some time before the Long War ended, arcane roads that connected the gatehouses of Midian with their counterparts on the other parts of continent, or even on other worlds, became entwined and tangled. The gates became dangerous to those who used them, and the gatehouses became interconnected in strange ways, so that a person entering Sunhome Gatehouse in Midian could very well exit through the Deadhouse in Golgotha or Jailgate in Drenorlor the Prison City.
Thus were Roads created. Some scholars speculate that the Roads are essentially a demiplane that is anchored by the gatehouses and that they can lead to other worlds or even planes of existence. Others remark on the fact that soon after the Roads came to being, a mysterious person called the Gatekeeper appeared, gifted with significant arcane power and will to use it for the protection of the gatehouses and the Roads. That gave raise to the speculation that he is one of Ascended – mortals who achieved some measure of divine power – who are considered Saints by Mitra's church. If so, Gatekeeper is very much unaligned – even more so than Caine, the Patron Saint of Assassins – and he never answers prayers or tolerates cults gathered to worship him.
There are 42 gatehouses in Midian. Nowadays, almost 2000 years after the end of the Long War and the making of Godpact, only 13 of them are in use, although not as originaly intended. Those gatehouses are now centers of power for various groups that vie with each other for the control of the city.
The creation of the Roads led to the currious effect – the appearance of lesser gates. By conservative estiments, there are now about 100 lesser gates in Midian, leading to other locales or planes. Those gates are sometimes as simple as chalk drawings on back alley walls and sometimes elaborate self-standing empty door frames, but they have been in existence in Midian for almost 4000 years, which is the reason why the city has so many planetouched among its inhabitants.
History of Rule
That which will become the City of Midian came to be as a military camp dominated by Hegemony soldiers (which later became Holy Imperium). Hegemony was a driving force against the armies of Shadow, and it devoted the greatest resources to the Long War. That was the main reason why the Hegemony dominated the Midian Military Camp and District and why the Camp was ruled by Hegemony Consul. Strong dominance of the Hegemony over Midian’s affairs continued during the Long War, although it was disputed by the other countries that have had Gatehouses in Midian – at least until the destruction of Hegemony’s capital of Heliopolis, that happened at the beginning of the sixth milenium of the Long War and led to the submerging of the Sunhome Gatehouse in Heliopolis and the closing of its sister-house in Midian. The cultural and economic influence of the Hegemony remained, although Hegemony itself changed after the raising of Pentia and Acheron Isles from the depths of the ocean. The efforts of waging war on two fronts led to the transformation of the Hegemony into Holy Imperium and the appointment of a Despot to rule Midian as semi-independent city-state. After the Long War ended, the city has become a prize for the warring kingdoms that have risen from the ashes of war. The city changed hands 39 times in total, before it gained complete independence 200 years ago, and became the titular capital of a small country called the Despotate of Morea, which gained much importance acting as a buffer between larger kingdoms surrounding it, as well as a trading hub.
The ruler of the city is still called a Despot. The position is not hereditary, although it is usually for life. The Despot is chosen by the Chamber of Magnates and he is in theory responsible to them. Despot’s powers vary depending on his power and influence in the Chamber and the assassinations of Despots who got to be too ambitious, popular or independent are not uncommon.
Magnates are rulers of the Gateguilds. Working Gatehouses and lesser gates are the source of great power and wealth. Indeed, the city’s lifeblood is commerce, and great deal of commerce is controled by those who control the gates of Midian. By custom, a person or a representative of persons who control a Gatehouse or other important gate has a right to sit and vote in the Chamber of Magnates. Frequent is the case that the Despot is someone popular with the people of the city and Magnates have no choice but to elect him to rule, but they always seek to manipulate him or control him. Chamber is not united, though. Many Gateguilds are in open or not so open competition against each other, so it is not uncommon for the Despots to manipulate Gateguilds instead of other way around. The number of Gateguilds is not constant. Sometimes Gateguilds loose the control of their Gatehouses, or Gatehouses shut their gates for no apparent reason. Currently, there are 10 Gateguilds in the Chamber.
City of Midian is currently in a state of political turmoil. The former Despot was assassinated almost a year ago, but the Gateguilds could not agree on a successor. There is no candidate popular enough among the citizenry, so the solution of the crisis is not forseable. In the mean time, great powers of the Midland region are casting their eyes towards weakened Midian and preparing for war.
The Lay of the City
Midian is defined by its rivers. The river Morea, a tributary of mighty river Grath, divides the city in 2 parts – The Old Town and the New Midian, while the much smaller underground river Stiga runs through the Undercity, coming from the depths beneath Old Mountains to the east, and joins Morea from below.
Morea runs from north to the south, dividing the city to eastern and western parts, with the Arx Draconem – The Citadel of the Dragon – in the middle. The eastern part of the city, called the Old Town, is a place where all the Gatehouses are located. Some even say that the New Midian is not realy a part of Midian at all, but a cancerous and deformed twin, that has grown on its own on the other side of the river. Of course, those who live in New Midian are not very fond of that opinion.
On the eastern shore of the city, across Arx Draconem, the Slave Port is located. This is a destination for slaves and spices comming from Many-colored Land, furs, timber and amber from Varingia, and many other products from all across the continent.
Markets and Shops
Old Town is the center of government and commerce. In addition to the Gatehouses and numerous lesser gates, there are five permanent markets in different parts of Old Town and many temporary markets that spring from time to time, with the permission of city authorities. The permanent markets are: Peasant Market, located near the eastern entrance to the city; Slave Market, next to the port; Khazar Market, in the Khazari Mahala; Black Market, located at the base of Warlock Hill and the Goblin Market in the Undercity.
The Peasant Market is the main market for food, cattle, horses, salt, silk and similar. It is divided in two parts – the Great Market, where most of the Midian’s citizens get their food and other goods for their homes and households, and Tradehouse, where traders and merchants conduct their business, buying and selling large quantities of spices, silk, silver, rare woods or herds of cattle, sheep or pigs.
Black Market is open only after the night falls. That is the place where you go to haggle with Hags and deal with the devils. If you want to buy a broken dream, discarded wish, magic sword or slightly-used soul, Black Market is the place for you. Most of the merchants there are Hags, but not all of them. There are angels down on their luck, selling their feathers one by one and looking for a quick fix, dwarfs from both Orinor and Mountain Kingdoms selling and buying weapons, members of Golem Syndicate looking for work and even traders from other worlds or planes. Black Market is also the place where the oldest citizens of Midian do their buying and selling, when not buying slaves. The vampire lords of the Old Court frequent the Black Market, sometimes for amusement’s sake, sometimes looking to do serious business. Black Market is almost a cultural center of Warlock Hill comunity, where most of the vampires, Hags and other creatures of the night that are citizens of Midian live.
There is a prominent Hag in the community, sort of unofficial leader of Black Market, called Baba Svetlana. She's 900 years old and rather uninterested in good or evil. She trades equally with heaven and hell and nobility often buys from her. She sells, among other things, used wishes, one night stand frog princes, slightly rotten pumpkin coaches and awakened mice bodyguards. These days Svetlana mostly trades in information, but she's always interested in some new magic item (or old and powerful), piece of property in the city or on some plane - and her not so secret passion is collecting (and reading) love novels.
Some of other notable merchants of Black Market are: Grandfather Erebus, the eldest vampire in the city and quite possible one of the oldest in the world, who runs a bookshop; Skalios the Necromancer, who runs a successful necrotech store, but also deals in ioun stones and shards, arcanotech and other such items, and finally alu-fiend twins, Mayala and Nayala. These sorceresses mostly deal in poisons and potions.
Across the river, in New Midian, there are no markets as such. New Midian, only 2000 years old, was built completely differently than Old Town. New Midian was inteded to be a place of progress and non-gate commerce, so the roads are wide and straight, and most buildings are taller and bigger than those in Old Town. Communal living is also more common in NM, since there are many families of the manufactory workers who live there. Sky Port is also located in NM, which is perhaps unfortunate, since the Orinor skyships have to circumvent the city wall almost completely in order to get there. The most imposing building in New Midian is located on the west shore, dirrectly acros Arx Draconem and Slave Port beyond it. This is the Watchtower – the tallest building in Midian and home of several lesser guilds, such as alchemists, clockmakers and Chapterhouse of Watchmen. Watchmen of Midian are something between peacekeepers and mercenaries. Their contract is with the City and not with the Gateguild, so they can be trusted to be impartial, but they are not sworn to the Despot, so they can be trusted by the Gateguilds not to become a blindly obedient part of Despot’s armed forces. They are mostly used to solve serious crimes, such as murder, rape, serious theft and similar. They also chase fugitives and act as agents of the city’s magisters in foreign countries. Current Commander of Watchmen is Trevor Pinkelton Kerrington, originaly from Albion.
The top of the Watchtower is dominated by huge four-sided clock that counts the hours in a day and the sound of its bells can be heard throughout the city. Above the clock is a mooring post, used by the Watchmen airships.
Besides Watchtower, there are two more sites of great interest in New Midian. One is Nicolau’s Iounworks – a place where the Great Inventor tirelessly works on finding new and improved uses for ioun stones, shards and dust brought from Orinor mines by skyships – and the other one is Miskaton Foundation.
Miskaton Foundation for Better Learning was recently founded in order to promote better educational standards for the newly rich merchant class of the city. The old nobility mostly relies on private tutors, but the new gentry is eager to have its scions learn the new skills of alchemy, iountech and contacting new realms and planes without the need for gates, that are under the dominance of old Gateguilds and noble houses.

Okay. So far we have
Golarion
Midgard
Scarred Lands
as suggestions for the new game world. To be honest, I would prefer Golarion. It probably is the most generic of the three, but it is the most supported. On the other hand, Scarred Lands do have that apocalyptic feel to them, but that is in some ways similar to Midnight. If we can reach the decision today, I'm gonna open Discussion Thread for the game and proceed with character creation.

Crunk |

You could do apocalyptic pretty well in the Wasted West, Haunted Lands of the Giants or Cardessa in Midgard.
Scarred Lands would be new to me, but I'm willing to learn it. Looks like at least some of the books are on DriveThru.
Be curious where you might want to set things in Golarion. I know that setting really well. Not quite as much apocalyptic though. Nex/Geb? Ustalav? Azlant? Worldwound? Wait maybe it does have apocalyptic.

![]() |

If we decide to play in Golarion, the game will begin in Korvosa, with the assumption that the events of the Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne, Second Darkness and Shattered Star have come to pass. The first three levels of play, assuming we start from 1st level, will be happening in Varisia. After that, we'll see.
If we decide to play in Scarred Lands, the game will begin in Hollowfaust. After that, I don't really know.
For now, I would ask you to state your interest in the game, so that I know how many players are actually interested. Than I'll open DT.

Vikturiun |

I'd vote Golarion. I'm unfamiliar with the other settings mentioned (I've heard of Midgard, that's about it). I find with Golarion that it is a diverse enough setting that you can find a place to set any particular type of game. It is very well supported, and that seems like a big advantage.
